I can easily recall the day that we last hung out, she and I. As usual in the summer we would go to the ranch that our families normally met up at. We would go lay in the wheat fields, we would go play by the stream in the woods, racing each other alongside the creek till we got to the moss covered fallen tree.

What do you think we will be like when we grow up?

She asked me that one day and I stared at her from across the narrow shallow stream. I thought about it, cocking my head to the side as I tried to figure it out.

I don’t know.

My imagination wasn’t the greatest as a kid. I didn’t live with thoughts of the future dancing in my head, but girls did. That was something that always seemed to be programed into them. They always thought about the future and what they wanted to do or be, who they wanted to marry, the type of wedding, how many kids.

I think we’ll be friends forever. Don’t you agree?

It made me smile and I nodded.
