"I know it's the first day, but I want you all to break up into pairs or trios to work on your first class assignment."
A unified groan ricocheted off of the classroom's walls as the professor merely rolled his eyes, one hand clutching the wooden podium he stood behind as the other tapped against the green inked whiteboard.
"It'll give you all a chance to get comfortable with each other and possibly even make new friends in the process," he explained, small smile upturning thin lips. "It'll be good for all of you, so find yourselves some partners!"
Raking her fingers through her hair, Althea raised her head from the syllabus she had been reading - a slight stinging sensation burning her eyes. She had been so consumed by the small stack of papers in front of her that she hadn't even listened to the professor's speech which, in retrospect, was probably not the wisest decision considering the confused panic that seeped into her senses as she watched busy bodies bustle around the room. Readying herself to ask the professor to repeat his instructions, the plopping sound of a notebook halted her actions.
"Do you want to be partners?"
Althea furrowed her brows upon hearing the familiar voice, her head turning towards the left as she focused upon the barista from the night prior. A shy smile twisted his lips as he shifted in place, long fingers anxiously running through his hair.
"If you want," he cleared his throat. "You don't have to, but I figured you'd might want to since we talked to each other last night at the cafe."
Suddenly his ever-enlarging eyes hung like two moons on a scarlet canvased backdrop as a blush tinged his face, "Not that I remembered you because I'm a creep or anything. I just - you know."
A soft chuckle escaped Althea's lips as she gestured towards the empty seat beside her, "I remember you, don't worry. Please, have a seat."
Nodding, he settled into the chair before extending his hand, "I'm Jeonghan."
"Althea," she smiled as she took his hand in her's with a light shake before sliding the assignment towards the center of the long tabled desk.
There was a pause of silence as the pair read the first question: What is your partner's name and where are they from?
Jotting each of their names down, Althea tapped the pen against the second half of the query before locking eyes with Jeonghan who quickly averted his focus onto the paper; red face seemingly darkening a shade upon being caught. A small smile upturned her lips as she cleared , forefinger pointing towards herself.
"I'm originally from Washington, but I transferred here from Osaka," she smiled before turning her head so that she was able to meet Jeonghan's gaze still timidly fixated upon the table. "What about you?"
Pushing his round-wired glasses closer to his face, he smiled, "I'm an exchange student from South Korea." He paused before quickly adding, "Seoul, to be specific"
"How are you liking it here so far?"
Jeonghan bobbed his head side-to-side as if weighing the pros and cons, "I've enjoyed it here, but I miss home sometimes." Suddenly his hand gestured towards her, "What about you? Do you miss Washington and Osaka?"
A bittersweet curve bit her lips as she nodded, "Osaka more so than Washington - it's where my best friends live, so I tend to feel more homesick towards Japan."
"Well, maybe you and I can become good friends then so that you have nice memories of Los Angeles."
His sudden sweet remark partially threw Althea off guard as she peered at him with rounded eyes. The genuine grin plastered across Jeonghan's charming features was like a yawn's ripple effect as a similar smile upturned Althea's lips.
"I would like th
