The Unintentional Meeting
Incantations of FateYe Jin decided to stay in the following morning, taking some time away from the outside world. It was the perfect start to her weekend, as far as she was concerned. That was, until, Nam Joon called her.
He asked where she lived now and said he would be there soon. That meant that she had about 20 minutes to get ready and look enthusiastic.
By the time her cousin rung the doorbell, she had washed her face and brushed her teeth, still looking like she had just woken up.
"Hey!" He greeted when she opened the front door.
She smiled and realized that he wasn’t alone. Behind him, Suk Jin stood.
"Noona!" He exclaimed and then lunged towards her, embracing her in his arms.
She slumped against him, missing the embrace of her brother.
Everyone entered and sat on the sofa. She brought out glasses of iced tea, without using magic and they sat together, not sure how to begin.
"He wanted to know where you lived," Nam Joon finally said.
"I'm glad you did," Ye Jin responded. She never would've thought that her brother would be in her apartment. It was as though his mere presence sent energy through the place.
After they chatted about her brother's new school year, her doorbell rang through the room.
"Are you expecting someone else?" Suk Jin asked, curiously.
She shook her head and went to unlock the door. The moment she did, the visitor burst through the door with bags of groceries weighing him down.
There was an audible gasp when he entered.
"Oh, didn’t realize you had company," Suga, said as he smiled at the other boys.
"Yeah, okay. What's he doing here?" Nam Joon asked, looking at Ye Jin.
"Just stopping by." Suga's smug smiled made them even more confused.
"Noona, who is this?" Suk Jin asked.
"This is Yoon Gi. He goes to school with me and Nam Joon."
"Okay, but why is he here?" Suk Jin continued.
"I actually don’t know." She turned her gaze to Suga.
"Oh," Suga said, finally realizing that he had some explaining to do. "Since you like kimbap so much, I figured we could make them without magic."
"He knows about the magic, too?" Suk Jin asked, raising his voice.
His sister nodded. "He's a part of the Min clan."
"WHAT!?!?" Nam Joon rose to his feet, outraged. "And you just hang around with him?"
"Okay, calm down," Suga said, holding out his arms to ease the worried classmate.
"You don’t ever tell me what to do!" Nam Joon retorted. Then, he turned to Ye Jin. "What are you thinking getting close to him?"
"I like her," Suga said, plainly.
All eyes fell on him. "No, you don't." Her brother stood up, glaring at Suga.
"How would you know? I'm serious."
Ye Jin was speechless. She knew there was something brewing between them, but she didn’t know he felt like that about her, enough to voice it.
"No, you don’t like her," her brother repeated. "If you did, you wouldn’t risk hanging around her and getting caught by the other members in the clan. You're dangerous to her just by being in the same room."
Ye Jin stared at her brother now, amazed that he was standing up for her, fearless.
Suga chuckled wickedly. "And what are you going to do about it?"
The two boys made their way to each other, and Ye Jin could sense that this wasn’t going to end well. Before either of them could say another word, she approached them. "Maybe you should just go, Yoon Gi."
He looked at her, with hurt showing in his eyes.
"I need to be with my brother right now and-and he's right. We're a danger to each other," Ye Jin continued, avoiding his stare.
Suga nodded and stormed off, out of the apartment and off the grounds. When the door locked and she placed the protection spell on the apartment once more, she breathed a sigh of relief. Now, she had to calm her family members.
"You better stay away from him," Nam Joon said. "School is one thing, but home? Definitely a bad move."
She nodded, knowing that they were just confirming her own fears.
"What about you, Noona? Do you like him back?" Her brother asked, joining Nam Joon once again on the sofa.
She thought about it and the answer was at the tip of her tongue. Her heart beat sped up whenever he was close enough to touch and his mischievous smile was growing on her. She often caught herself stealing glances at him across the classroom and she was intrigued to know more about his life, apart from the magical side of it. Every fiber of her being was drawn to him, and her heart and mind were in constant conflict over this.
"Yes, I do." She looked at their outraged and shocked faces, knowing that she had disappointed them. At least she was honest with them. They were the family members she loved and she needed to be honest and refrain from lying if she wanted to maintain their trust.
"Just remember that I need you in my life. Without you, I have no one to turn to," her brother told her with pleading eyes.
She nodded and walked over to the groceries Suga left on the ground.
"Should we get to making some kimbap then?" She asked, desperate to lighten the mood.
They let out stifled chuckles and joined her in setting out the ingredients. The tension was lifted and they began to enjoy their day as intended. Although she loved those boys, she couldn’t help but let her mind wonder about Suga and if she had hurt him.
