Bad Luck

Our Story

Luhan had been so excited. For their day off in Hong Kong, he had finally gotten permission to go out. The manager hadn’t even batted an eye when Luhan had cautiously asked if it was okay for him and Xiumin to go out, alone; without any managers. He had assumed it was for coffee, after all, the two had been going off alone for coffee trips and soccer games since debut. He had told them to be careful and to wear appropriate disguises. He had told them to call him in case anything happened.

Luhan had spent two hours looking through places where he and Xiumin could go. He had checked all the tourist attractions and picked the ones he knew that Xiumin would like the most. He had finally decided to take Xiumin to the popular Mong Kok market as well as for ice-skating at a shopping mall. After that, he had planned to just walk around the mall before grabbing a coffee and coming home.

He had been completely prepared. He had told Xiumin that they were going on a date but not the exact location or activity that they would be partaking in. He was determined to make this the best date ever as well as a surprise for Xiumin. He was the man in this relationship, after all. Luhan had even been forced to avoid Xiumin because one pout from the boy and Luhan would probably spill everything.

It had been difficult, avoiding the boy, especially since they shared a hotel room. Luhan had to fall asleep at ridiculously early hours (8:30PM!?!?!) and wake up super early as well (6:30?!?!?) in order to avoid encounters with the older boy.

Xiumin became aware of the reason as to why Luhan was avoiding him and had made things worse by teasing Luhan. He spent more time on his appearance and would do things that he knew would drive Luhan crazy.

For example, yesterday, he had worn a pretty tank top that left little to the imagination. He had also on a lollipop right in front of Luhan, all the while smirking. Luhan had been forced to skip lunch and had to go straight to the bathroom to *ahem* fix himself. Xiumin had trailed behind him and acting all concerned, had brought him lunch. Luhan had hastily grabbed the food and had to leave. Xiumin had begun to laugh and Luhan wanted to be annoyed but just couldn’t manage it at the cute expression on the Baozi’s face.

He had then taken refuge in Chanyeol and Sehun’s room for the remainder of the evening. Chanyeol had been a major help, checking out where Xiumin was and informing Luhan, even though he got way too into the role of a spy, wearing a black suit with dark shades. Luhan had nearly given himself a concussion when he smacked his head into the desk after seeing the getup.

Sehun had been no better. He had gotten all excited and insisted on bringing Tao into the ‘club’. Tao had in turn brought Kris. Kris, after seeing what was going on had left muttering something about them being actual aliens from EXO planet.

The point was, Luhan had (mostly) managed to avoid Xiumin in the days before the date. He had been really pumped up.

So it was totally unfair that he got sick.

~

Luhan had woken up with a heavy head and a persisting cough. His stomach had churned in a way that made him uncomfortable and he just managed to reach the toilet before the contents of his stomach spilled out.

Once he was finished, he leaned back with a groan. ing great, this had to happen today. He banged his hands against the toilet in anger and then let out a yelp. The toilet was very hard.

He decided to take a shower, hoping that he would be fine. However, after only seconds under the hot water, he began to feel dizzy and had to stop the water before he fell down. He used a lower temperature but the dizziness persisted. He reluctantly resorted to using cold water hoping it would wake him up but instead, it reduced him to a shivering mess. He was never going to use cold water again; that stuff was for demons and D.O.

He grabbed a towel and quickly dried off, wrapping it around his waist. He looked in the mirror and was pleasantly surprised to see that he looked, at least on the outside, completely fine. No one would be able to tell that he was sick.

After all, it wasn’t like it was anything serious. In fact, if he took some medicine, he would probably be completely fine for the date. He smiled brightly, that was perfect! He could pull it off. “Man, you are a genius!” He told his reflection proudly, flashing a thumbs up.

He walked out of the bathroom. Xiumin was still sleeping, his back turned to Luhan. They were sleeping in their own beds. Luhan resisted the urge to go and coo at the older boy who no doubt had an adorable expression on his face.

He instead went through his wardrobe before taking out the clothes he had arranged before for the date. It was a new white shirt and Luhan felt it suited his pink hair rather well. His jeans were the ones that had been gifted to him by Tao last Christmas and although Luhan didn’t trust Tao with a lot of things, he definitely trusted him when it came to fashion.

He quickly changed into the clothes and checked on Xiumin. The boy was clutching the quilt, soft snores escaping his mouth. His mouth itself was in an small ‘O’ shape as he breathed in and out. Luhan really wanted to kiss the boy awake but he also didn’t want to wake up the boy yet so he quickly went out of the room, walking downstairs to the kitchen.

He looked around the cabinets for medicine and couldn’t find any. “Where is it?” He grumbled. He was getting a headache again and this wasn’t really helping. “Where’s what?” The deep voice startled him out of his thoughts. He turned to see Chanyeol, the boy fresh and ready, his hair self-styled. “Whoa! Don’t sneak up on me like that!” Luhan exclaimed. Chanyeol smiled brightly. “What are you looking for, hyung?” He asked again, curiously.

“How are you awake? Shouldn’t you be with Baekhyun or something?” Luhan asked ignoring the previous question. “I’m an early riser. And, um, Baekhyun’s still angry at me.” Chanyeol mumbled the last part. Luhan raised his eyebrows. “Still? It’s been what- 4 days?” He asked incredulously. Chanyeol nodded mournfully. “I’ve tried apologizing so many times but he just ignores me. From now on, I’m not going to apologize anymore. I’m sick of it and he can forgive me whenever he wants.” Chanyeol said, his voice a bit annoyed as he rolled his eyes. Luhan patted the boy’s shoulder comfortingly. “Don’t worry, he’ll come around.” Chanyeol nodded with a grateful smile. A quiet silence came into the room.

Suddenly, Chanyeol looked up. “Hey! Hyung! You didn’t answer my question! What are you doing here?!” Chanyeol asked suspiciously. Luhan sighed. Looks like there would be no escaping this giant. He leaned in close to Chanyeol and whispered the next words. “Can you keep a secret?” Chanyeol’s eyes immediately widened in excitement. “Of course! Have I ever revealed a secret before?” Yes.

Luhan bit his lip hesitantly, unsure of whether Chanyeol would be of a help. Seeing the tall boy’s eager look melted Luhan’s heart a bit and he decided to go with it. “Okay, so, well, I have a teeny tiny fever, I think. I’m not too sure. And I really really really want to go on the date with Xiumin today. So, I was just looking for some medicine. You know, to get rid of it. So, would you happen to know where the medicine is….?” He trailed off.

Chanyeol nodded in understanding although he had a look of concern. “Shouldn’t we check your temperature?” He asked, his deep voice filled with worry and uncertainty. Luhan shrugged. “I don’t think we need to.” He replied. Chanyeol shook his head. “But last time Kai got sick, D.O. checked his temperature and gave him the appropriate amount of medicine based on it.” The boy recalled, his eyebrows furrowing.

“Oh, really?” Luhan asked. “You have to do that? I never did that before.” Hmm. You learn something new every day. Chanyeol nodded. “Let’s check your temperature first.” The tall boy reached up to the highest cabinet (quite easily) and brought out a thermometer. “Open wide.” Chanyeol called out. Luhan opened his mouth and Chanyeol shoved it under his tongue. “Ack.” Luhan let out. “Oh, sorry hyung!” Chanyeol apologized sheepishly. “Not so hard next time eh?” Luhan croaked. Chanyeol nodded, his face flushed in embarrassment.

After a while, Chanyeol took out the thermometer. “Hmm, oh god!” The boy’s face paled as he looked at the thermometer. “What is it?” Luhan asked, worried from the expression and tone of the tall boy. “Y-you should be in bed! You have a really high fever! Look!” Chanyeol said ing the thermometer at Luhan’s face. Luhan shoved it away. “It doesn’t matter! I have to go today!” Luhan said stubbornly. “B-but hyung! The temperature!” Chanyeol said exasperatedly.

“Chanyeol. I thought you said you would help me. And honestly, I just want some medicine before the date. So, if you want to help then help. If not, go away.” Luhan snapped. He hadn’t meant to sound so rude but his head was killing him. Chanyeol sighed, a slightly hurt look on his face. “Hyung. You know I’ll help you. But I still think you should stay home. Minseok hyung won’t mind about the date. You need rest.” Chanyeol pleaded. Luhan shook his head firmly. “You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this. I’m not going to let it go because of some stupid fever.” Luhan said, his jaw set in determination.

Chanyeol sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Alright then. I’ll help you.”

~

Xiumin woke up excited for the date. Luhan had been (adorably) been avoiding him for the past few days, insisting that if he stayed near Xiumin he would reveal details about the date. Xiumin had played along but couldn’t resist ticking the boy off a bit. It had been hilarious but Xiumin was also glad it was over. He had missed Luhan.

He took his time getting ready, mulling over different outfits before finally deciding to wear a simple blue button up shirt and three quarter shorts. He even styled his hair perfectly. Sehun would be proud.

After getting ready, he walked downstairs. Almost everyone was ready by that time and were excitedly eating breakfast, eager for their day off. Xiumin knew that Kris, Suho, Tao and Lay were going shopping. D.O. was going for a movie. He insisted on going alone, saying he needed to rewind a bit. Kai, who had been eager to go along with him, was disappointed. He was now going to a place called ‘Victoria Peak’ with Sehun, Chen and Baekhyun. Chanyeol hadn’t told anyone about his plans but he would probably be tagging along with Baekhyun.

D.O. had made simple pancakes and from the excessive amount of syrup, it looked like Chanyeol had helped him. Xiumin saw Luhan talking to Chanyeol and walked up to the back of the boy before giving him a surprise back hug. “Good morning.” He cooed into Luhan’s ear. Luhan jumped, a bit startled. “You scared me!” He said in surprise before smiling at Xiumin. “Good morning to you too~” Luhan whispered before pulling him in for a short kiss. The brief touch of their lips was enough to cause an eruption of butterflies in his stomach.

He smiled up at the boy, his eyes slightly mischievous. “So you’re done ignoring me huh?” Xiumin teased. Luhan scratched his head sheepishly. He opened his mouth to speak but Xiumin beat him to it. “It’s okay, I’m kidding. I know why you did that. And honestly.. it’s kind of sweet.” Xiumin admitted. Luhan smiled, relief on his face.

“So, when will we go for our date?” He asked the taller boy. “As soon as breakfast is finished.” Luhan replied, his voice filled with excitement. “Breakfast isn’t going to finish until you two sit down and actually eat.” Suho reminded in a motherly tone. Xiumin giggled a bit, grabbing Luhan to sit down with him.

As they tucked into their pancakes, Xiumin noticed Chanyeol staring intensely at Luhan. He glanced at Luhan. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong, the boy was completely normal. Luhan, noticing Xiumin’s gaze raised an eyebrow questioningly. “Chanyeol was staring at you weirdly.” Xiumin whispered into the boy’s ear. Luhan glanced at Chanyeol before turning back to Xiumin. “He’s probably going to prank me.” Luhan joked. Xiumin giggled. It was very likely. It would be just like Chanyeol to prank Luhan on a day like this.

Xiumin couldn’t help but feel more and more excited at the idea of going on a date. He hadn’t originally understood why Luhan was so hyped up at the idea of it. It was just like them normally going out on their coffee trips. But, it had been a long time since they had gone out, just the two of them. It would be nice to spend some time with Luhan, regardless of what they did or where they went.

Xiumin was broken out of these pleasant thoughts when Luhan began to cough. Luhan was doubled over, coughing repeatedly with his head down. Chanyeol jumped up from his seat. “Are you okay hyung!?” The younger boy asked frantically, his usually optimistic voice filled with worry.

Xiumin looked at Luhan with concern. “You alright, Lu-ge?” He asked sweetly, patting the boy’s back. Luhan came back up. His face was unnaturally red. “Fine. Just choked on the pancake.” He said hoarsely. “Here, have some water.” Xiumin passed a glass of water. Luhan accepted it gratefully.

Once he finished drinking, Chanyeol repeated his question. “Are you alright hyung? Are you sure?” Chanyeol asked, his expression worried. Luhan nodded. “I’m fine, Chanyeol.” He said pointedly. Chanyeol blushed before sitting down. Xiumin exchanged a glance with Baekhyun. The puppy-like boy was glancing between Chanyeol and Luhan suspiciously. Xiumin agreed with the suspicions. Baekhyun was able to read situations perfectly.

They continued the rest of their breakfast without any more trouble. Xiumin noticed from the corner of his eye, Baekhyun nudge Chen, glancing at Chanyeol who was busy on his phone. Chen cleared his throat. “Um, Chanyeol-ah. Where are you going today?” He asked. Xiumin smirked, it was so incredibly obvious that it wasn’t Chen who wanted to know.

Chanyeol glanced up, a look of confusion on his face. “Oh, um, not sure.” The boy replied distractedly before turning back to his phone. Chen nodded, looking content with the answer. However Baekhyun wasn’t. The boy nudged Chen again, gesturing to Chanyeol with his eyes. Chen sighed in exasperation. “Chanyeol-ah, you want to come with us?” He asked, a bored tone in his face.

Chanyeol glanced up again and glanced at Chen, his gaze flicking to Baekhyun. “No thanks.” Chanyeol said curtly. Chen shrugged going back to his pancakes. Baekhyun nudged Chen again. Chen breathed out loudly. “I’m a singer, not a postman!” He called out loudly into the air. Everyone stopped their chatter and looked at him.

“Okay…” Suho trailed off, not sure of how to respond. Xiumin held back his laughter at the entire situation, glancing at Luhan. Luhan seemed to have witness the entire exchange as well and his eyes gazed at Xiumin’s with evident amusement.

As breakfast finished up, Xiumin glanced at Luhan with excitement. “Let’s go.” He said to Luhan. Luhan grinned back, jumping a bit in excitement. He turned to Chanyeol. “Black alligator!” He yelled randomly at the tall boy. Chanyeol nodded and ran up the stairs. Xiumin looked at Luhan. “What was that?” Xiumin asked. “Nothing.” Luhan smiled sweetly, giving Xiumin a kiss on the nose.

“You can’t just distract me like that.” Xiumin pouted. Luhan laughed. “Let’s just go. I can’t wait!” Luhan let out a giddy giggle. Xiumin couldn’t help but be infected with the excitement.

They headed to the door, about to leave when they were stopped by Suho’s voice. They turned to their leader. Suho gave them a warm smile. “Have fun.” The boy said sweetly.

Chapter 80: I finally completed your story. (I wanted to finish it way much earlier... >_>) And I really have to say that your story was incredible. The whole story seemed so realistic and I really liked they way you took your time with establishing the relationship between Xiumin and Luhan. Also all the dialogues, movements or gestures from the characters seemed so real, I felt like actually beeing in EXO's dorm viewing a movie while standing on the set myself and seeing everything from such a closeness, because the way you wrote I could really imagine every scene so well and it was such a pleasure to read your story, because you used a wide range of vocabulary and used good terms.
Luhan was so sweet in this story, I am happy that you didn't make him the bad guy and Xiumin and him somehow managed to move on their own way. They deserved so much better.
Not only had Kris's leave a huge impact on the whole group (btw love it, that you showed every single member at that part.), but also Xiumin's sadness at the end, not beeing able to let out his emotions, not wanting to selfish rubs off on the reader as well.
I don't even know how to express all what I am feeling and how happy I am to have read this story. It was the fluffiest of fluff, as romatic as love poem and yet sad and realistic.
Just like the two of them I won't forget. I will come back and read your story again.
I cannot help but hope for them to find happiness.
