Chicken soup

Our Story

Luhan wanted to kill Chanyeol. The tall boy had asked whether he could tag along to the date with him and Xiumin. Luhan had refused him immediately. Much to Luhan’s shock, the boy had simply nodded.

Luhan knew it was too good to be true.

In the end, Chanyeol had followed them on their date. He was, basically, stalking them. It was completely ridiculous and infuriating. Luhan hadn’t noticed it until they reached the market. Xiumin and Luhan were standing in line for some bubble tea when Xiumin had gotten a call from D.O., asking about the socks or something stupid like that.

Luhan had heard a thud and had turned to see a familiar tall boy sprawled on the floor, having tripped over. The freakishly tall guy had frantically yelled out ‘Sorry!’ multiple times and Luhan had realized that it was Chanyeol. No one else had such a deep voice. They had made eye contact and Chanyeol had panicked, running away. Luhan’s instinct was to run after him and then beat the out of him.

However, he couldn’t just leave Xiumin. So Luhan had opted for a text message.

‘You’re so dead, Park Chanyeol.’

A reply had come rather quickly.

‘Don’t get angry!!! I was just worried!!!’

Luhan couldn’t but feel a bit touched by it. That didn’t mean he wasn’t annoyed though.

‘Go away! Let me have my date!’ He had messaged. No reply had come and by then, Xiumin had ended the call with D.O., giggling a bit. “Our dongsaengs are crazy.” Xiumin commented happily. Luhan thought of Chanyeol. “Definitely.” He agreed. They made small talk and soon, Luhan forgot about Chanyeol. When they finally got their bubble tea, Luhan insisted on paying for it. Xiumin glared at him.

“Why do you pay for everything? It’s not fair on you!” Xiumin protested. Luhan grinned. “I like paying for you.” He replied. Xiumin rolled his eyes. “Well, I don’t like it.” He retorted. Luhan giggled. “You love it.” He insisted. Once they had gotten their drinks, Xiumin grabbed his arm. “No, but Luhan, seriously. Let’s split it. Please?” Xiumin asked seriously. Luhan looked at him curiously. “Why do you want to split it so badly? I honestly don’t mind paying.” Luhan replied. “Just-please?” Xiumin pleaded. “It feels wrong.”

Luhan cocked his head to the side. “Alright, anything for you.” He shrugged. Xiumin grinned, pressing notes into Luhan’s hand. Luhan put it into his wallet. They continued to walk around and Luhan didn’t remember ever feeling so happy before.

They weren’t really do anything, they were just walking around and talking about random things. They weren’t doing something super special. In fact, It was kind of hot and Luhan was annoyed from wearing the mask to cover their faces.

The point was, they were together. Well, they were always together but never really completely alone. A date. This wasn’t like one of their regular coffee trips or soccer games. The atmosphere was different; it promised a beginning. A beginning to a relationship perhaps. All Luhan knew was that he wanted to be with Minseok.

Now, if he could just get Chanyeol to leave.

~
They were in a restaurant just before they would go and ice-skate. Xiumin had gotten fancy spaghetti and Luhan had opted for the same thing as well as some ice-cream desserts. Xiumin looked beautiful, his eyes were doing their weird thing when they seemed to be sparkling. His lips were pulled back in a permanent smile which made Luhan feel prouder than should be normal.

When the food arrived, Luhan had been excited. Xiumin had eaten first and Luhan had watched him, eager to see his reaction. At Xiumin’s happy clapping and grin, Luhan felt relieved. Okay, the food was good, he thought.

But, for some reason, when he took a bite, it tasted bland. Confused, he ate more and more but it just got worse. His stomach began to churn in a way that made him feel instantly uncomfortable. He looked up to see Xiumin’s expectant face. “What do you think?” He asked cheerfully. How could Luhan ruin his mood? He couldn’t.

“It’s awesome!” He gave two thumbs up cheerfully and Xiumin giggled. They ate the food and although with each bite, Luhan felt more and more sick, he kept a smile on for Xiumin. He would not ruin this date.

When Xiumin bent down to tie his shoelaces, Luhan looked over and saw that sitting directly behind them was Chanyeol. The tall boy was hunched over, the top of his head peeking over the menu. His eyes widened and the boy ducked behind the menu quickly. Luhan glared at the direction. He took out his phone and quickly typed a message.

‘Get lost.’

The reply came. ‘Are you fine, hyung?’

‘Yes. Now leave.’ Luhan replied immediately. Xiumin again, picked the perfect time to get up. Seeing Luhan’s stormy expression, his eyebrows furrowed. “What’s wrong?” He asked, confusion evident in his voice.

Luhan immediately smiled. “Nothing. I just really want ice cream.” He said cheerfully. Xiumin’s expression relaxed, a peaceful smile coming on his face. “Thanks.” Xiumin whispered to Luhan. “Huh?” Luhan asked, a bit distracted, trying to see whether Chanyeol was still there. “Thanks for the date. I didn’t really get why you were so excited. But now I do. This is really fun.” Xiumin said, his voice shaky yet firm at the same time as his cheeks turned pink. Luhan turned to look at the boy and smiled.

“I’m glad.” Luhan replied, blushing a bit as well. Xiumin smiled and sipped some water, leaning back and closing his eyes, a content expression on his face. Luhan put his head in his hands and watched the boy. They had discarded their masks a few minutes ago feeling safe in the quiet and small restaurant. When the desserts came, Luhan inwardly groaned. He really didn’t want to eat any of that. He clenched his stomach, feeling like he was going to vomit. “You happy now?” Xiumin teased. “Yeah! Finally! It’s just, uh, I need the toilet!” Luhan said quickly. Xiumin nodded, albeit a bit a suspiciously.

Luhan got up and speed walked to the bathroom. When he walked in, he was relieved to see it was empty. He went into the nearby bathroom and immediately vomited out all the spaghetti. He felt someone patting his back but was a bit occupied (sarcasm) and couldn’t check. When he was finished, he flushed the toilet, leaning back. He turned to see Chanyeol, the boy giving Luhan a sympathetic look.

“Hyung. You should really go home.” Chanyeol said, his voice serious. Luhan shook his head feeling lightheaded. “No, I can’t. You don’t understand. Minseok is so happy.” He said, dazed. Chanyeol helped him up. “Hyung, if you don’t tell him. I will.” Chanyeol insisted. Luhan turned to him angrily. “Don’t you dare.” He ordered, staggering a bit without the tall boy’s support. “Hyung.” Chanyeol began. Luhan turned away from him, trying to get to the door. To Minseok.

He only realized that he was falling down when he was centimetres from the floor. “Oh .” He cursed before everything went black.

~

Xiumin didn’t panic when Chanyeol suddenly came out of the bathroom with a passed out Luhan in his arms. He didn’t panic when he saw the nose bleed. He didn’t panic when Chanyeol told him frantically what had happened. He didn’t panic when he checked Luhan’s forehead and realized how hot it was.

Instead, he calmly paid the bill. He told Chanyeol to give Luhan a piggyback. He then politely asked to leave through the back door. The manager of the restaurant was more than happy to allow that, not wanting to tarnish the restaurant’s reputation. He then called his manager and made up a story- Chanyeol, Luhan and Xiumin were eating dinner when Luhan had gone the bathroom. He had tripped and fallen, getting a nosebleed. Also, he had a fever. The manager had assured him that he would be there soon. Xiumin had then stood on the pavement next to Chanyeol who was panting from carrying the deer-like boy. Xiumin then told Chanyeol that he would carry the boy. Chanyeol agreed and soon, Luhan was on Xiumin’s back. He was lighter than Xiumin had expected.

He became painfully aware of how hot the boy’s skin was and how the had he not noticed this before? God, he was the worst person ever. He quickly discarded the thought. There simply wasn’t enough time to think about things like that. He needed to get Luhan home first.

When the manager arrived, he checked over Luhan and said that the boy’s nose would be okay, it wasn’t anything serious. They put him in the car and strapped him up. Xiumin and Luhan sat at the back, Chanyeol at the front with the manager.

“If he had a fever, why did he come along? Why didn’t either of you do anything?” The manager asked as he drove. Xiumin was curious about that as well but one look at Chanyeol’s panicked eyes told him that explanation could wait. So, Xiumin smoothly replied: “We didn’t know until just now. Besides, you know how much Luhan loves day-offs. He probably didn’t want to miss one. Being the idiot he is, he probably didn’t even know how high his temperature was.”

The manager nodded, accepting the explanation. Chanyeol shot a grateful look at Xiumin which he replied with a discreet nod. The car lapsed into silence. It was unusual for Chanyeol to be quiet for so long but no one questioned it and Xiumin was occupied by his own thoughts.

He couldn’t help but worry about Luhan. Now that he had gotten off the high of their date, he noticed the obvious signs of Luhan’s sickness. His skin was paler than normal and slightly green as well, if you looked closely. His lips were slightly chapped. He had very unnoticeable (but still there) dark eye circles. Also, Xiumin recalled that Luhan’s eyes had watered a lot during their date. As these little things were brought to Xiumin’s attention, he felt more and more guilty.

Poor Luhan had been suffering during their entire date and Xiumin was such a big idiot that he hadn’t even noticed anything until it was too late. He should have noticed, he thought regretfully, wanting to kick himself. Xiumin sighed out loud.

“We’ll be there soon.” The manager said in response. Xiumin nodded. He spent the rest of the ride notifying D.O. and Suho of the incident. They promptly responded with worried texts, asking what had happened. Xiumin tried to explain as much as he could but not knowing the whole story, it was a bit difficult.

As they reached the hotel, one of the staff came out with a stretcher. “Seriously?” Chanyeol asked incredulously. “How else will we get him to his room?” The manager asked, shrugging his shoulders. Xiumin helped to place Luhan on the stretcher. The boy was still knocked out cold, the blood had dried a bit.

The staff took charge from then, saying that they had experienced nurses in the building for these incidents. They said they were taking Luhan to his room and that someone would be sent their shortly. The manager went with the staff to get the nurse, insisting that Xiumin and Chanyeol go with Luhan. Chanyeol and Xiumin followed the staff with the stretcher in silence. Xiumin kept on worrying that Luhan might fall over and hurt himself. Chanyeol looked awkward and uncertain, looking like he wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how to do it.

When they reached the room, Xiumin led the staff to his and Luhan’s bedroom and motioned at Luhan’s bed so the staff could place him there. They did so wordlessly and left immediately, not even bothering to ask if they needed anything else. Xiumin tucked Luhan into bed properly, cursing the stupid staff under his breath. He pulled the quilt over Luhan’s body.

He was just about finished when Chanyeol spoke up. “He didn’t want to miss the date.” Xiumin turned around and glanced at Chanyeol in confusion. “What?” He asked. “He, he didn’t want to miss his fate you. He’d been waiting for so long and he didn’t want to disappoint you as well as, as well as himself, basically. I told him so many times to not go but-” Chanyeol’s voice cracked and the tall boy looked close to tears so Xiumi got up and gave him a hug. “Chanyeol-ah. It’s not your fault.” If anything, it’s mine, he added silently.

“He really cares about you, hyung. You should know that.” Chanyeol whispered and let go of Xiumin, a smile on his face. “He loves you.” Xiumin blushed at the words. “Take care of him, hyung.” Chanyeol finished.

Xiumin nodded. “I will.”

And that’s what he did. When the manager arrived with a nurse, he stayed at Luhan’s side and listened carefully to her instructions. He then cooked up chicken soup for Luhan with Chanyeol’s help. He got the medicine ready and placed everything in a tray, walking to the bedroom. “Hyung, I’ll be watching TV.” Chanyeol called after him. Xiumin nodded in response.

He saw that Luhan was still sleeping. He placed the tray on the bedside table and grabbed a chair, bringing it close to the bed. He gently shook Luhan. “Luhan, wake up.” He said softly. Luhan stirred a bit, frowning slightly before going back to sleep. Xiumin continued to wake him up, slowly and carefully, not wanting to hurt the boy. Luhan eventually gained consciousness. “Minseok-ah.” He said, his voice thick. “You’re awake. Come on now, I made some chicken soup.” Xiumin said patiently getting up to help the boy up. As he reached up to lift the boy’s pillow, Luhan weakly grabbed his arm. “I’m sorry. I’m so so so sorry.” He said, sounding genuinely distressed. “What are you apologizing for?” Xiumin asked curiously.

“I spoiled our date. Our first date.” Luhan said softly, his voice shaky. Xiumin sighed. “Luhan. I enjoyed it. It was amazing. But I still think that there’s no need for dates. Just being with you is enough for me. So, please, don’t do that next time. Your health and happiness is more important to me than anything else.” Xiumin whispered to the younger boy, brushing his hair away from his forehead. Luhan stared at him. “What?” Xiumin asked nervously under the intense gaze. “I really want to kiss you but my breath stinks.” Luhan said softly, his voice filled with sincere sadness. Xiumin giggled and placed a gentle kiss on the boy’s mouth. “I don’t care.” He said to the boy. Luhan grinned.

“Now, how about some chicken soup?” Xiumin asked cheerfully.

“Only if you feed me.”

~
Around an hour later, Xiumin came from the room with swollen lips and an empty bowl. Chanyeol smiled at the boy. “Had fun?” He teased. “Shut up.” Xiumin replied with a bright smile on his face. “How is he?” Chanyeol asked, following the older boy into the kitchen. “He’s resting. Hopefully, he’ll be better by tomorrow.” Xiumin said optimistically. Chanyeol nodded. “With you taking care of him, I’m sure he will.” The taller boy said happily. Xiumin grinned at the compliment.

“Should we make dinner? I’m sure the others will be back soon.” Xiumin suggested. Chanyeol nodded enthusiastically. They decided to make soup for everyone, seeing as they had enough ingredients. As they cooked, they talked about music and Xiumin learned that the taller boy wanted to learn how to write songs and was learning from Lay. He was surprised. He hadn’t expected Chanyeol to be so hard working considering his usual laid back and carefree personality.

They had set everything up and were washing the dishes when the door was opened. He heard a chorus of voices calling out and immediately recognized them. It looked like Baekhyun, Chen, Sehun and Kai were home. They walked into the kitchen. “Wah! Chicken soup! Score!” Kai yelled out. “Kyungsoo messaged us. How is he?” Chen asked seriously, ignoring chicken boy. “Resting. So, keep the noise down.” Xiumin said pointedly at Kai. Kai flushed and apologized sheepishly.

“Will he be fine for the flight tomorrow? We’re going back tomorrow.” Sehun said, worry in his usually apathetic voice. “I’m sure he will. Don’t worry, Sehun-ah!” Chanyeol said optimistically wrapping an arm around the maknae’s shoulder. Sehun gave a little smile. “Chanyeol hyung. You should have come. There were these awesome hats that I know you would have loved.” Sehun gushed. Chanyeol chuckled at the boy’s excitement. “Man, it would have been great if I had come. It was so boring with these two.” Chanyeol gestured to Xiumin.

“You’re the one who rejected our offer. Besides, why did you ruin their date? You know that they wanted some alone time together.” Baekhyun said cuttingly. Chanyeol glanced at the boy, his smiled dropping. Xiumin couldn’t help but step in. “Baekhyun. That’s enough. Chanyeol didn’t really come with us. He followed us to make sure that Luhan would be okay. He was worried about his hyung and sacrificed his day off to make sure we had a good time. So, Baekhyun, I think you owe him an apology.” Xiumin finished, crossing his arms.

Baekhyun looked shocked. “R-really?” He asked uncertainly turning to Chanyeol. Chanyeol nodded. “It wasn’t as heroic or awesome as he made it sound but yeah, basically that’s it.” He said awkwardly. Baekhyun closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. He took a deep breath. “I, I didn’t know. Sorry. Sorry about before as well. You know.” Baekhyun finished awkwardly, his skin tinted pink. Chanyeol stared at the boy, giving no response. Baekhyun took this the wrong way. “Look, I know I’m not very good with apologies but you could at least acknowledge it-” He was cut off by Chanyeol enveloping him in a hug. Baekhyun wrapped his arms around the boy’s taller frame. “Don’t be such an idiot all the time.” Chanyeol said in his deep voice. Baekhyun nodded. “I know. I’m sorry.” He said sincerely.

Kai gagged. “Seriously, we’re supposed to be men. Why is it so mushy all the time?” He asked. Chen nodded in agreement. “No wonder our fans think we’re gay all the time.” He added. Baekhyun turned to Chen. “Ya. You’re the one who can’t sleep without a million stuffed toys!” He retorted. Laughter filled the air as Chen, red in the face, tried to deny it.

As they laughed, Xiumin slipped upstairs and walked into the room to check up on Luhan. The boy was sleeping peacefully. Xiumin checked to make sure his breathing was normal and even. He checked the boys’ temperature and was relieved to see it had gone down. By very little, but it had still gone down. He kissed the boy’s temple and left the room, giving him one last glance before leaving.

He didn’t catch Luhan’s sleepy but genuine smile as the boy stirred in his sleep, having recognized the sweet, gentle lips.

Chapter 80: I finally completed your story. (I wanted to finish it way much earlier... >_>) And I really have to say that your story was incredible. The whole story seemed so realistic and I really liked they way you took your time with establishing the relationship between Xiumin and Luhan. Also all the dialogues, movements or gestures from the characters seemed so real, I felt like actually beeing in EXO's dorm viewing a movie while standing on the set myself and seeing everything from such a closeness, because the way you wrote I could really imagine every scene so well and it was such a pleasure to read your story, because you used a wide range of vocabulary and used good terms.
Luhan was so sweet in this story, I am happy that you didn't make him the bad guy and Xiumin and him somehow managed to move on their own way. They deserved so much better.
Not only had Kris's leave a huge impact on the whole group (btw love it, that you showed every single member at that part.), but also Xiumin's sadness at the end, not beeing able to let out his emotions, not wanting to selfish rubs off on the reader as well.
I don't even know how to express all what I am feeling and how happy I am to have read this story. It was the fluffiest of fluff, as romatic as love poem and yet sad and realistic.
Just like the two of them I won't forget. I will come back and read your story again.
I cannot help but hope for them to find happiness.
