Chapter 40: Going to You
This is War: A Story of Friendship, Betrayal and Love"We will have to strike them tonight. We need to save her."
"But we can't surrender Hoya either."
"We won't. We will have to go tonight when the sunsets, where they are at their weakest."
When Hoya left the room, he felt that his soul left his body. He felt like a zombie as he walked, people pushing pass him.
"I am putting all of you in danger if we do this."
"Hoya what on earth are you talking about?"
"You don't understand."
When did everything start crumbling down? He was beginning to forget that he was Lee Howon, the kingka in his high school, dancer extraordinaire, basketball fan and the school's number one heartbreaker. He always wondered what would he be like if the war never happened: like he was then or the person he is now.
"Then make us understand, Hoya."
"You do not have to carry this burden on your own."
"Although it was just a short time... We are like a family. Julia to us is like our sister too."
Hoya was dreading every step he took, tears sprung to his eyes when he recalled his sister strapped onto the chair like an animal, her head lolling to the left and right. He wasn't sure what they were doing to her but he wasn't sure how long his sister could survive in such conditions.
"Please, Hoya, tell us. I feel partly responsible for your sister's capture. It should've been me."
"Shinyi, you would have died!"
"Please, just tell us what is going on. What are you hiding?"
He wondered if his father didn't make that scientific breakthrough, would they still be safe? Would their parents still be alive?
"For heaven's sakes boy just spit it out! Your secret can't be that bad!"
What if it is? Hoya thought to himself as he entered his quarters.
"You can trust us. We need to know what you know in order to save Julia."
"I...."
"Do not make the same mistake like I did."
Hoya looked at the mirror and huffed. He was a mess, he had visible dark circles underneath his eyes. He looked like he had aged greatly and he won't be surprised if he could find a few strands of grey hair on his head. He sighed and tousled his already messy hair before pulling his shirt over his head. Maybe, Julia was right. There was no way they could go back to their old lives,
"Hyung?" all eyes on Sunggyu.
"I made a mistake. I... I thought I could handle everything on my own. My parents left us a measly amount before they disappeared for good. I had to be the grown up in the family. I had to take care of Myungie and Haeyi. I worked, sometimes 2 jobs just so that the both of them won't starve. I had to make sure they stayed in school. It didn't matter if I didn't get a college degree, as long as the two of them do, I am happy. I never wanted to burden them, I never once wanted them to know how I felt for they were young, mere children. They do not deserve to see such hardship. I should've confided in them instead of confiding to a mere stranger but I needed the money. Our apartment was being remortgaged by the bank due to outstanding payment and I couldn't bare the thought of the two of them living in the streets. That was how I met the Master. I thought he was our guardian angel. He paid us a lump sum and in return, to do small favours.
"He got me a job at the hospital where your father was working and doing research for this gene that is deemed to be powerful and to even 'resurect one from the dead.' Whatever I found out, I told him about it. But, the longer I worked for your father and his team, the closer I got to him. Nevertheless, I was still loyal to the Master. When he told me to kill your sister, I wanted to pull out, I swear, Hoya. I wanted to end this. I walked out of the warehouse where we would meet and I thought I would never see him again.
