Denial

You're Mine

(A day later)

—Yesung’s POV—

I watched as Wookie cooked porridge for Kyuhyun with a determined expression. After we returned home yesterday and bathed, Wookie immediately went to search on foods that could improve memory. He also searched on foods that were good for the brain. For today, he decided to cook chicken porridge with dark green veggies. The important part of the porridge was the veggies, but we knew that Kyuhyun wouldn’t eat the veg alone.

I knew how Wookie felt. We all did. But he probably took it harder than us, just like Sungmin. Wookie had always blamed himself for getting Kyuhyun into the accident. It was true that he had been so much more relieved when Kyuhyun was out of danger, but then he was in a coma. And now, we have to get Kyuhyun to remember everything that happened in the past five years.

Wookie covered the pot and sat beside me, looking at his list of foods that were good for the brain and memory. I had taken the look at the list once, and I never wanted to read it again. There were foods like pig brain which I never ever wanted to touch, thank you very much.

Wookie turned to me and sighed heavily. I could just tell that he was blaming himself yet again for the situation that Kyuhyun and Sungmin were in. Sungmin hadn’t woken up since he fainted again, and for now I honestly felt that it was better like that. If Sungmin woke up and saw how Kyuhyun acted, I don’t even want to think about how he would react.

“Do you think Kyuhyun will eat that?” Wookie asked, pointing at his pot of porridge. I wanted to tell him that Kyuhyun most definitely wouldn’t accept food, not from us. Then I remembered that there was someone who was able to convince Kyuhyun – Seohyun.

“He’ll listen to Seohyun,” I answered. Despite it being the truth, I wanted to gag. After seeing how Kyuhyun acted around Seohyun yesterday, I couldn’t help but be glad that Kyuhyun was the man in his relationship with Sungmin. I didn’t even want to picture Kyuhyun acting cute with Sungmin.

Wookie rested his chin on his palm while looking at me, acknowledging what I said. We both knew that I wasn’t lying. Kyuhyun was currently smitten with Seohyun and it was horrible. What was worse was that Seohyun was already engaged, yet Kyuhyun refused to buy it. Was this the event that caused Kyuhyun to stop liking girls: his breakup with Seohyun? Because as far as I could tell, Kyuhyun seemed to like girls a hell lot in the past.

I shuddered a little at the thought of it. I could almost imagine how Kyuhyun used to act around everyone. I suddenly felt so glad that I didn’t know Kyuhyun in the past. How disturbing would it have been to know the cute Kyuhyun? Ugh.

Wookie turned the stove off and transferred the porridge to a container and closed the lid, already going to get his bag. Once again, we were going to visit Kyuhyun. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Kyuhyun was still holding on to Seohyun. I don’t even think he let her go last night.

Honestly, I did feel sorry for Seohyun. She was engaged with the person she really loved and Kyuhyun was just her childhood friend and ex-boyfriend, yet she had to help Kyuhyun for our sake. This issue could create a rift between her and her fiancé, which obviously wasn’t a good thing.

When Wookie returned from our room, we headed out. We hailed a cab and got on, telling the driver to go to the hospital. Wookie sighed again and I couldn’t do anything but wrap an arm around his neck, squeezing his shoulder reassuringly.

“Kyuhyun will be fine. He’ll remember,” I told him confidently.

I didn’t even know who I was trying to convince anymore.

---------------------

We arrived at the hospital and first visited Sungmin. Apparently, he had woken up in the middle of the night and asked about Kyuhyun immediately. Heechul and Hankyung had been the ones staying with him, along with Eunhyuk and Donghae. All of them had to tell him the truth, or Sungmin would have gone to look for Kyuhyun on his own. And Sungmin knows, now.

According to them, Sungmin hadn’t thrown a fit or cried. He didn’t even ask anything else. He just sat on the bed and stared at the blank wall across him. It sounded painfully familiar. Sungmin was acting like how Leeteuk acted when he and Kangin’s relationship was messed up. But at least Leeteuk would respond to us, even if he had been slightly violent. From what Heechul said, Sungmin didn’t even acknowledge anyone.

Once we stepped into Sungmin’s room, I saw what Heechul meant. Sungmin literally sat on the bed, legs crossed, staring at the white wall opposite him. He remained in the same position for the entire time that Wookie and I were there, and I felt my heart break. Sungmin was one of the dongsaengs that I was closer to, and it really hurt to see him give up on life.

Surprisingly, Wookie went up to Sungmin.

“Sungmin hyung, do you really think that Kyuhyun is going to remember anything like this?” Wookie questioned, sounding somewhat angry. I watched as Sungmin seemingly ignored my boyfriend, but I knew better. Something flashed in Sungmin’s eyes. Whether it was realization or anger, I couldn’t be sure, but I knew that Sungmin understood what Wookie was getting at.

“All of us here are helping you, but why? Why should we help you if you aren’t even helping yourself? You’re the best person to make Kyuhyun remember everything, so why are you giving up? Because I don’t see any reason for us to help you, if you don’t even want to help yourself.”

Wookie turned around and picked up his container of porridge, leaving Sungmin to ponder over what he said. Heechul looked awed by Wookie. I was awed by my boyfriend too, I had to admit. There was something about Wookie that was special. He cried easily. I found no reason to deny that. Some would say that he was weak. However, if the need arose, Wookie would try his hardest to help his friends. He could be honest and say the things that we all wanted to, but dared not, say.

Heechul, Hankyung, Donghae and Eunhyuk each gave a small wave as I left to follow Wookie. I grabbed onto Wookie’s hand and smiled at him proudly. None of us could ever be like him. We cared too much for our friends’ feelings to be that honest, even Heechul. Only Wookie could be so uncaring of their feelings and tell them the truth that they refused to acknowledge.

“You did great back there,” I told Wookie. He simply nodded and continued making his way to Kyuhyun’s room. I knew why Wookie cried so often. It wasn’t because he was weak. It was because he carried too much weight on his shoulders. Sooyoung wasn’t someone to be dealt with easily, yet Wookie tried his best to handle everything on his own. He could be stronger than any of us on the surface, but once I was alone with him, he would break down. At the moment, Wookie was holding everything in. I could tell.

We walked into Kyuhyun’s room to find Kangin, Leeteuk, Zhoumi and Henry. As expected, Kyuhyun was still keeping a tight grasp on Seohyun’s hand. Seohyun looked like she was on the verge of tears. I could only guess that it was because her best friend, and ex-boyfriend, was in such a condition.

Kyuhyun was on the computer, looking at something which I presumed wasn’t Starcraft. His gaze landed on us when Wookie and I entered the room, and he looked back down. “It’s you guys.”

Wookie nodded, placing the container of porridge on the table. Kyuhyun eyed the container suspiciously before asking Wookie what it was. When Wookie told him that it was chicken porridge, Kyuhyun immediately assumed that it was poisoned and refused to eat it.

“Oppa, it’s not poisoned. You saw the date and you know that we’re not lying. You really lost five years’ worth of memory,” Seohyun said. Kyuhyun huffed, eyes still glued onto the computer screen. It was clear that he was in denial. What I couldn’t comprehend was why. Why didn’t Kyuhyun want to acknowledge the fact that we were his friends?

---------------------

“I don’t get it.”

All of us turned to look at Kyuhyun questioningly.

“Why? Why do you want me to remember? Don’t you understand that as long as I don’t remember, I can stay with Joohyun?” Kyuhyun asked. I saw, from the corner of my eyes, that Wookie was clenching his fists. Kangin was doing the same.

“I don’t get it either. Why can’t you just accept reality?” Kangin retorted, standing up to tower over Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun didn’t seem to be intimidated in the least. In fact, he gave Kangin a challenging look. That only served to fuel Kangin’s anger.

“Why should I?” Kyuhyun demanded.

“You’re being selfish. You’re being an idiot. Do you think that you’re the only one who’s hurting?” Wookie asked, taking a deep breath to calm himself down. “So what if your girlfriend of four years broke up with you? So what if she was engaged? So what if you got into an accident and suffered from amnesia? Does it mean that life stops, or that it goes back to what it was five years ago?”

Kyuhyun stared at Wookie, starting to get angry as well. “Do you know that it hurts to know that your girlfriend doesn’t love you, that she fell in love with another man? Why would I want to remember the pain that I felt, years ago, when I can just forget it?”

“Because you were happy. Sungmin hyung made you happy.”

Kyuhyun scoffed. “I don’t even know who that guy is.”

“You say that it hurts. It hurts to know that your girlfriend doesn’t love you anymore. Do you know how much it hurts for your boyfriend to say that he never loved you? How much it hurts to for him to say that he doesn’t even remember you?” Kangin asked.

Kyuhyun was silent for a moment. I had to pull Wookie back before he could slap Kyuhyun, and Leeteuk had to pull Kangin back before he could punch Kyuhyun. It was nice to know that Kangin and Wookie were completely in tandem with each other again, unlike when they were on bad terms.

“You loved him enough to give him your life, Kyuhyun. Now you say that you don’t love him. Can you place yourself in Min’s shoes?” Zhoumi asked quietly. I saw that Kyuhyun was chewing on his lips and furrowing his brows, deep in thought.

All of us were hopeful. Maybe what Wookie, Kangin and Zhoumi said would knock some sense into Kyuhyun. There wasn’t a high possibility of Kyuhyun remembering anything, but perhaps he would be able to try. If he was willing to just get to know Sungmin again, or even acknowledge him… Sungmin would be back. Min wouldn’t give up on Kyuhyun as long as he isn’t pushed away.

Seohyun was just as hopeful as we were. It wasn’t as if she was unwilling to take care of Kyuhyun. She was more than willing to do so, actually. She just didn’t want, or need, Kyuhyun to constantly cling onto her. After all, she had her own life to lead.

Kyuhyun stared at every one of us again, like how he did yesterday.

“Kyuhyun, Sungmin needs you. He’s broken without you,” Leeteuk told him. Kyuhyun seemed to be conflicted. It was clearly reflected in his actions, and I couldn’t help but be nervous, just like the rest of them. This was an important decision that could very likely determine Sungmin’s fate. If Kyuhyun doesn’t give us a positive reply, Sungmin probably won’t ever get better.

It may have only been seconds, but it felt like an eternity as we waited for Kyuhyun to reply.

“I’m sorry. I can’t do it.”

*shoots myself in the head because I'm making Minnie suffer too much*

This turned out worse than I expected. I wanted to make Kyu agree to their suggestion, and get to know Minnie again and everything. But where's the fun in that? x.x

I feel horrible for making poor Minnie suffer like this. He's practically killing himself and I don't know why I'm being so evil now ><

This fic is becoming angstier by the chapter :/ I have no idea when this is gonna end or anything, but let's hope that it's soon D:

Either ways, I hope you guys enjoyed this and look forward to the next angsty chapter!

Chapter 61: OK OK OK, wait! What!? Are you serious? Someone is actually going to lose a limb? And that someone is none other than the main protagonist!? This is a joke right? If it isn't then I'd rather not read on ahead. The last time I read a fic where the main character lost an important part of their body I went into depression for two weeks even though it was a happy ending, after that I swore to avoid fics like that. I guess it was good while it lasted. Thank you for the hard work and effort you put in this, I really enjoyed reading it, good luck with your other fic!! ^_^
Lots o'love!
