Chaennie Shots (Volume 1)

The first message came a week after the surgery. It surprises me how you somehow are able to make my heart flutter even at a time like this.

Are you asleep? I bet not. I miss you. I love you.

But when I realized what just happened, I jumped up from my bed and rushed to the hospital.

“Ms. Kim?” One of the nurses called out to me, but I just ignored the call and went straight into her room.

“Cha…” But the words I wanted to say died out in my throat, when I saw her still in the same state she’s been for a week now.

With a heavy sigh, I took the chair next to her bed and held her hand in mine.

“You got me Hubby. I thought you were up. How did you do that?” I asked her, trying to blink away the tears, “I really wish you would wake up now.” I whispered, before I let myself drift off to sleep, my hand still holding tightly onto hers.

The next message came the following morning.

Good morning Wifey. Make sure you eat properly before heading to work. I love you.

I smiled when I saw the message, even though she isn’t physically here with me...she hasn’t made me feel alone.

Everyday there would be messages from her. Sometimes more on certain days than others.

Did you eat lunch? Don’t skip your meals or else! I love you.

Dinner time love. Hmmmm how about some milk ice cream for dessert!!! Maybe you can ask Lisa or Jisoo to bring you some. I love you.

Are you up binge watching Netflix again? If so, you better sleep now or else I’ll be very mad at you....ah just kidding you know I can never be mad at you. Sweet dreams. I love you.

Everyday there was a message. And everyday I look forward to each one. But then it made me wonder...how many messages did she prepare? How many are left?

“Hey there Hubby. Sorry I haven’t gotten a chance to visit this week, I was busy at the company. Anyways, I got your message this morning and I am proud to report that I did have both breakfast and lunch, as for dinner well I thought that I can have dinner here with you. “I chuckled, while opening up the chinese take-out I brought with me, “Ah! We recently got a new model, her name is Bae Joohyun, but she goes by the stage name Irene. She actually intimidates me and stares at me a lot, but she’s really good at modeling so I have no complaints. I miss you Chaeyoung-ah, wake up to me soon okay.” I smiled, gingerly placing a soft kiss on her lips.

As the days without Chaeyoung passed, I started getting used to the presence of Joohyun in my life. The messages haven’t stopped too.

Make sure you eat all your meals today as well. I love you.

Remember that one time we played Animal Crossing for like 5 hours straight and you still said it wasn’t fun. You’re so cute Wifey. Have a good day. I love you.

Ah! It’s almost midnight Wifey….you should be in bed and tucked in. Goodnight, sweet dreams. I love you.

“Oh hey Jen long time no see. Chu just went to grab some food. Let me tell her to buy extra for you.” Lisa smiled, when I entered Chaeyoung’s room.

“Yeah that sounds good...it’s been a while since I came here.” I gulped, still seeing her laying in that bed.

“Are you okay?” Lisa came up to me and pulled me out of my thoughts.

“Huh?”

“You know Jen...it’s okay if you don’t feel the same anymore.” Lisa carefully said to me, and at her words I snapped my head in her direction.

“What?”

“It’s Joohyun right?”

“Lisa what the hell are you talking about?” I was starting to get annoyed.

“You like her. Chu and I..we see the way you look at her and her at you. She likes you too, so don’t be stupid.” Lisa softly spoke.

“I don’t like Joohyun. She’s just a friend. I love Chaeyoung, only Chaeyoung!” I yelled.

“We know you love Chaeng, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t feel anything for Joohyun. It’s okay for you to fall for someone else, I mean this is real life Jennie. Not some drama where you’ll forever wait for her. It’s okay, Chaeyoung...she’ll understand.” Lisa smiled so knowingly at me that I couldn’t hold it back anymore. I cried. I cried because Lisa was right. I am starting to fall for Joohyun.

“Chaeyoung will understand. Just tell her, I know she can’t respond, but you should still tell her. Don’t stop your life Jen, keep living, keep being happy. It’s what she would want..” Lisa softly whispered, while hugging me tightly and patting my back.

“Thanks Lis.” I manage to choke out, before hugging her tighter.

The last message came a year later. One day before her surgery.

Hi love. Did you get all my messages? Ah I hope you did. It’s been a year now. Am I awake? If so, please don’t tease me about this if I am...but maybe it would be better if you teased me right? I really hope this isn’t the case but, if I’m not...well I hope that I can at least put your heart at ease. I love you so much. So much that I can’t even find the words to describe just how deeply I feel for you. As I spent my days writing you messages, you were always by my side. Remember when you thought I was cheating because of these?

I chuckled remembering that.

“Yeah I remember. You idiot so this is what all that was about.” I pouted, wiping my tears away before reading the rest of the message.

My wifey is so possessive. Ah I think you're pouting right now and thinking “You idiot.” So don’t pout and don’t cry. I hate it when you cry. I hate it when you're sad. If I could I would take away all your suffering, I would take away all your sadness. If I had a superpower I would wish it was the power to always keep you happy. No matter what. Hmmm why do I suddenly have this feeling that you're blushing because I’m being cheesy again? Did I make you laugh just now? I hope I did. Jennie. Jen. Wifey. I’m sorry that this idiot is the one your heart chose. I’m sorry that this idiot you love is only causing you pain. But I’m not sorry for loving you. Loving you is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. But I also know that I have to let you go. So Wifey, that’s what I’m doing. I’m setting you free. Happy Anniversary Love. You may not be mine anymore, but always remember that I was yours and I will always be yours. I love you.

“Chaeyoung-ah.” I sobbed.

“Babe? Hey Jennie. What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” I felt myself being engulfed in a familiar warmth.

“Are you okay now?” She softly asked, wiping away my tears.

“Yeah...I just.”

“It’s okay. I know. It’s okay.”

“I love you Jennie Kim. Please remember that.”

“I know..and I love you too Joohyun.” I smiled at the woman who managed to turn my gray skies into clear blue skies. At the woman who stole my heart unknowingly.

-Author’s POV-

3 years Later

“I knew you’d be here.” A familiar voice said, while taking the empty spot on the bench.

“You know I wouldn’t miss this for the world. And what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be with the rest of the bridal party heading to the reception?”

“I told Chu to cover for me. You know.. I still can’t believe you...are you really okay with this?”

“I mean do I have a choice, Lis? She’s married now and she looks happy. She was even more beautiful today.”

“Chaeng….” Lisa trailed off, eyes watching the cathedral where the marriage of Jennie Kim and Bae Joohyun just occured.

“Thank you Lisa...for listening to me.” Chaeyoung genuinely smiled at her best friend.

“You know, Chu didn’t want me to do it. To encourage Jen to move on, but then we suddenly get this text from you and how did you know?”

~Flashback~

“Chu you know that Jen is starting to fall for Joohyun, maybe we should tell her to forget about Chaeng.” Lisa carefully opened the topic to her girlfriend who sent her such a deadly glare that Lisa wondered why she was still alive.

“How can we betray Chaeng like that Lisa?” Jisoo asked with so much venom in her voice.

“You’re not blind Chu...you see it too. The way they look at each other. Plus, what if Chae nev…”

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence Lalisa Manoban or else.” Jisoo quickly interrupted her girlfriend, before she was able to continue speaking.

“Chaeyoung will wake up she….” But Jisoo’s words were cut off by a very familiar text tone from Lisa’s phone.

With wide eyes, Lisa quickly checked her phone,

Hey Lis...it’s been half a year since my surgery….how are you? How’s Jichu? Are you guys engaged yet?! If so, CONGRATULATIONS! If not, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR YOU ?! Uhm well first, I want to say that I’m sorry if this freaks you out, especially if I’m not awake yet. I found out that you can actually pre-set a delivery date and time for messages so yeah...Anyways, if I am awake then don’t show this to Jen cause she might kill me for even suggesting this...but, and I hope this won’t be the case, but if I’m not awake. Then please encourage Jennie to move on. 6 months is a long time and quite frankly, the Doctors said that if I won’t wake up after a month the chances of me waking up are essentially nonexistent. I’ve accepted that. But I also wanted to give myself a bit of a fighting chance. That’s why I had this message sent at this time. Lisa please help Jennie move on from me. I don’t want to chain her to someone that may never return. I love her and this is all I can do to make her happy. So please, do whatever you and Jichu can to help me with this.

I love you guys.

~End Flashback~

“I didn’t. It’s like I wrote you, I didn’t want to chain her to someone who may never return.” Chaeyoung sadly smiled, staring at her friend who was there when she woke up two years ago.

“But you did wake up Chaeyoung-ah, in the most dramatic ing way possible by the way, like who wakes up when the life support machine is turned off?!”

“I guess the universe decided it wasn’t time for me to go yet.” Chaeyoung chuckled at her goofy friend.

“You know that Jen was there that day, hours before it happened. She was there, but then she left because she couldn’t be there to watch you take your last breath...Chu too.. Your parents understood that, but I couldn’t leave you. It was like my gut was telling me that if I left you, then I’d miss something.”

“I’m glad you stayed Lis.”

“Me too...but what are you going to do now? Are you really going to have her think that you’re dead for the rest of her life? What happens if you two suddenly meet each other again?” Lisa questioned.

“If we ever cross paths again that is...I actually was thinking of moving to Australia. I’ll just spend my days there and if one day, we meet again then I’ll come clean. But for now, I’d like to keep that smile on her face for as long as possible. She’s happy and that’s all that I care about. I love her and I will always love her.” Chaeyoung replied, wiping the tears that continued to fall from her eyes.

“Chaeyoung…” Lisa looked at her friend, who just saw the love of her life marry someone else.

“I’m fine Lis. C’mon, I’ll take you to the reception. I won’t go inside, but give her a hug and tell her that I’m happy for her okay?” Chaeyoung took a deep breath before getting up from the bench and offering a hand to her friend.

When the two arrived in front of the venue, Lisa turned to her friend and with a soft smile, gave her a hug while she whispered, “Take care of yourself always. Keep in touch. I’ll miss you.”

“I’ll miss you too.” Chaeyoung hugged her friend tightly, before letting go.

Before Chaeyoung got back inside her car, she caught a glimpse of Jennie, her smile so full and bright. She was happy and in a moment, quite briefly her eyes met Jennie’s, Chaeyoung smiled, glad that it was getting dark and that she wore a bucket hat to help conceal her identity, but Jennie kept staring.

“Be happy….I love you.” Chaeyoung mouthed, before turning around and leaving.

Inside the venue Jennie felt a familiar pull towards the stranger in a bucket hat outside.

“Chae?” She softly whispered, but before she could take a step forward, her line of sight was blocked and when she turned towards the entrance of the venue, the figure was gone.

“Hey there you okay? You look like you saw a ghost?” Joohyun worriedly asked.

“I think I just saw my guardian Angel.” Jennie replied, before placing a chaste kiss on Joohyun’s cheek.

“Thank you Chaeyoung-ah, for loving me.” Jennie thought to herself with a smile.

A/N: This is super rushed. I just finished Crash Landing on You and thought that it was so cute that Jung Hyuk wrote each message for her. I was gonna give this a happy ending, but my spotify playlist said otherwise.....
