When You Look Me In The Eyes pt.3

Chaennie Shots (Volume 1)

Meanwhile, Jennie was once again working late in the office...she’s been like this since Chaeyoung’s accident. She wants to visit the girl, but she can’t handle seeing her like that. Of course Jennie was there when the Park family showed up, but after that she just...couldn’t.

So when she saw Lisa’s name pop-up on her phone Jennie’s nervousness shot up, with shaking hands she answered the call.

“Chae...she’s awake.” Lisa said and Jennie released the breath she didn’t know she was holding.

“I’ll be right there. Thanks Lisa.” Jennie quickly ended the call and dashed out of her office.

‘She’s safe Jennie. She’s safe.’ Jennie kept telling herself that all the way to the hospital, but when she finally got to Chaeyoung’s room..she paused. Her hand gripping on the doorknob so tightly, her knuckles turned white.

‘If I walk in there...will she even be happy to see me? Maybe I shouldn’t even be here...Chu is here...I’m sure Chaeyoung...wouldn’t want me here.’ Jennie slowly released her grip from the doorknob. She was so deep in thought she didn’t realize the door opening and her in-laws standing in front of her.

“Jennie dear aren’t you going to head inside?” Mrs. Park’s voice brought Jennie out of her musings.

“Oh uhm Mrs. Park I..”

“Jennie I thought we agreed that you will also call me Mom.” Mrs. Park interrupted Jennie, with a teasing smile.

“Right..uhm Mom..I was just about to head inside.” Jennie lied through her teeth, flashing a small smile at her in-laws.

“Okay well we’re about to head home for the night. She’s been looking for you. So, perfect timing.” Mr. Park smiled at his daughter in law before leaving with his wife, Jennie was about to head inside when Lisa suddenly dragged her to the stairwell.

“Look before you go in there...you need to know something.” Lisa told Jennie how she somehow believes that everything that happened between them didn’t happen with Jennie but with Jisoo.

“What?” Jennie was taken back with this information.

“The doctor said it’s a defensive mechanism or some bull like that. Jisoo unnie is acting strong, but I can tell it’s hurting her. So I’m here to warn you, because I will protect Chaeyoung this time around. Don’t make her fall for you again.. I don’t want her to lose her smile again. So keep your distance, tell Chae that you guys are only married by paper. The doctor doesn’t want us to force the truth on her to avoid stressing her out, but if Chae starts to fall for you again...I will personally tell her the truth.” Lisa spewed out before leaving Jennie alone in the stairwell.

After Lisa left, Jennie just wanted to disappear. Never in her life did she expect any of this to happen.. Karma really is a and Jennie Kim just learned this the hard way.

With a few more deep breaths, Jenie finally calmed all the thoughts swirling in her head and before heading towards Chaeyoung’s room, Jennie had to call one person.

“Chu where are you? I heard about Chaeyoung.” Jennie was worried about her best friend. She’s already put the two of them in so much pain and this just had to be the icing on the cake.

“I’m at home Jendeuk, don’t worry about me. Just focus on Chae for now.”

“Jisoo...I…”

“Look, you don’t have to say anything. Chae will remember in time, but for the meantime please take care of her for me okay? She didn’t want me to be there, so please.” Jisoo’s voice broke and Jennie knew she was crying.

“Chu I’m sorry...don’t worry I’ll take care of her and I’ll try to help her find out the truth faster.”

“Thanks...uhm I have to go..let’s hang out soon okay?” Jisoo tried to sound more cheerful, but Jennie knew better.

“Yeah, anytime you want.”

After her quick phone call, Jennie finally found the small courage to see her. When she entered the room, Chaeyoung immediately greeted her with the biggest smile on her face, “JEN! You’re here.” Chaeyoung was giddy and you can tell she’s excited, her heart rate was increasing.

“Hi..sorry I’m late. I came as soon as Lisa called.” Jennie tooke small careful steps towards Chaeyoung’s bed, trying to get used to her being the warm and kindhearted Rosie that she thought she’ll never know again.

“It’s okay...you’re here. That’s all that matters to me.” Chaeyoung, reached out her hand and Jennie immediately took it in hers.

“Yeah...I’m here.” Jennie softly spoke, her eyes avoiding Chaeyoung.

“Well since Jennie unnie is finally here. I’ll head home Chae. I’ll come again tomorrow.” Lisa smiled, heading towards the door, but before she left she called out, “Unnie..remember.” With one last smile, Lisa walked out, leaving the two alone for the first time in months.

“So…” Jennie tried to make small talk, but the way Chaeyoung was looking at her got her all tongue tied.

“I’m sorry.” Chaeyoung suddenly apologized and Jennie furrowed her brows.

“For what?”

“For worrying you.” Chaeyoung pouted and Jennie softened and the cute sight.

“I forgive you...as long as you try to not get in any more accidents.” Jennie replied sternly, but with a soft smile on her lips.

“Yes ma’am.” Chaeyoung giggled.

The two sat in a comfortable silence until Jennie spoke, “Rosie...about us..uhm..” Jennie was nervous.

“We’re only married on paper. I know unnie, but we’re friends right?” Chaeyoung looked at Jennie, her eyes dripping in sincerity.

“Yeah..we’re friends.”

“I’m glad. I don’t know why, but I feel like I have to say this..” Chaeyoung, paused her hand reaching out and gently taking Jennie’s hand in hers, while she said, “I missed you.”

~ ~

4 months passed, Chaeyoung’s proper memories haven’t returned. She was still living alone and Jennie in a condo nearby; however, even though Lisa would always subtly remind Jennie to keep her distance, the two often hung out together.

“Surprise!.” Chaeyoung suddenly popped out of nowhere, scaring Jennie in the process.

“ROSIE! You almost gave me a heart attack!” Jennie whined and Chaeyoung laughed playfully at the girl, while settling herself on the couch in Jennie’s living room

“Sorry...couldn’t help it.”

“What are you doing here anyways? I thought you and Lisa were hanging out today? Also, I gave you the passcode for my place for emergencies not for early morning visits.” Jennie lightly scolded the girl, she was happily enjoying her quiet Saturday morning, when a certain blonde decided to scare her out of her wits by popping out of nowhere.

“Lisa bailed, said she was hanging out with Jisoo unnie today. I’m bored so voila. I thought I could come see my wife.” Chaeyoung chuckled.

“And you’re okay with that?”

“With?”

“Chu and Lisa hanging out?” Jennie asked.

“Unnie…”

“We’ve talked about this Rosie…”

“I know..but how can Jisoo unnie be my girlfriend when she was the one that played me in the past?” Chaeyoung asked, not a hint of hurt or sadness in her voice.

“Because Rosie..things just happened.”

“What things? Am I missing something? Because I’ve moved on from the past unnie.” Chaeyoung admitted.

“You have?” Jennie was surprised.

“Yeah...I realized that it didn’t do me or her any good if I just kept being bitter...it happened and I can’t do anything about it.”

“Well if you’ve moved on then what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be going after your girl?” Jennie forced a smile...this past few months, something changed in Jennie, it’s subtle but it’s starting to bloom.

“Unnie~~ I came here to hang out, because the weekend is the only time I can escape my office..can we not talk about Jisoo unnie? How about we go out and play today?” Chaeyoung whined, begging Jennie to hang out with her today.

“Fine fine. Wait here, let me get ready.” Jennie rolled her eyes at the childish blonde.

“I thought you hate being at work, so why are we at your company?” Jennie asked after Chaeyoung parked the car in the underground garage of Rêver Entertainment.

“I said I hate being in my office, c’mon I want you to hear something.” Chaeyoung beamed, before dragging Jennie to the recording studio.

“Okay, I wrote this song...and just listen.” Chaeyoung smiled, sitting Jennie down on the couch, grabbing a guitar, and settling herself in front of Jennie.

I like your eyes. You look away when you pretend not to care

I like the dimples on the corners of the smile that you wear

I like you more the world may know but don't be scared

'Cause I'm falling deeper, baby be prepared

I like your shirt, I like your fingers, love the way that you smell

To be your favorite jacket just so, I could always be near

I've loved you for so long sometimes It's hard to bear

but after all this time, I hope you wait and see

Love you every minute, every second

Love you everywhere, and any moment

Always and forever I know, I can't quit you 'cause Baby you're the one

I don't know how

Love you 'til the last of snow disappears

Love you 'til a rainy day becomes clear

Never knew a love like this, now I can't let go

“I'm in love with you, And now you know.” Chaeyoung once again spoke the last line of the song while staring at Jennie..and it reminded Jennie of that night when Chaeyoung last sang to her, and it took every ounce of Jennie’s willpower not to break down in front of the girl.

“It’s beautiful Rosie.” Jennie smiled.

“Thanks...I wrote it for you see.” Chaeyoung was so proud and showed Jennie her cute little note on the bottom of the sheet music, ‘For the loml J. Kim.’

When Jennie saw the note, she knew it wasn’t for her. The J. Kim was not her.

“Are you sure you wrote it for me? Look, it's dated before your accident.” Jennie pointed out and before Chaeyoung had a chance to say anything she continued, “It’s a great song Rosie..it really is. Hey I’m getting hungry, want to grab an early dinner?” Jennie stood up.

“Sure let’s go.” Chaeyoung beamed, taking Jennie’s hand in hers and leading her out.

After enjoying their very early (4PM) dinner, the two found themselves at an arcade.

“Let’s race!” Jennie was so excited, she hadn’t been in an arcade in years so when Chaeyoung suggested it she immediately said yes.

“Get ready to eat my dust Rosie.” Jennie beamed while they waited for the green GO! On the screen.

“In your..Hey that’s cheating!” Chaeyoung whined, when Jennie suddenly tickled her side when the race began.

“All’s fair in love and war Hubby.” Jennie was all smiles, not even realizing what she just said.

“What did you call me?” Chaeyoung stopped, but Jennie was too engrossed in the game to hear her.

The two hogged the machines for a few rounds, before Jennie decided she wanted to try DDR. Jennie picked Normal, but Chaeyoung picked Hard.

“Oh cocky aren’t we.” Jennie teased, picking a Blackpink song for the first round.

“I’ve spent more than normal hours on these things with Lisa..so I think I have rights Wifey.” Chaeyoung teased Jennie, who turned red at the term of endearment.

“What did you just cal…”

“It’s starting.” Chaeyoung interrupted her and the two got lost in another game.

It was getting pretty late, and so Chaeyoung decided to bring Jennie back home. The two were walking towards Jennie’s condo. The smaller girl insisted she can head up on her own, but she relented when Chaeyoung gave her those puppy dog eyes.

“Did you have fun today?” Chaeyoung asked, smiling while eyeing Jennie who was squishing the giant dumpling plushie they got from being in the arcade for so long and spending more money than any sane person would.

The two were talking in front of Jennie’s door.

“I had so much fun today Rosie! I wish we can do this more often.” Jennie was beaming, she can’t remember the last time she felt this happy.

“Well your wish is my command, we can do this anytime you want okay?”

“Really?! Ah! Thank you Rosie!” Jennie hugged Chaeoung tightly, because she really was that happy and excited for when they can do something so carefree again. Chaeyoung hugged Jennie back just as tightly and said, “Don’t thank me. I’d do anything for you.”

With that, Jennie pulled back her eyes looking deeply into Chaeyoung’s eyes and ever so slowly the two found themselves being pulled to one another.

“Jen? Chae?” Jisoo’s voice stopped the two from getting any closer. Turning to her best friend, Jennie’s eyes widened and she immediately stepped away from Chaeyoung.

“Chu hey what are you doing here?” Jennie quickly composed herself and turned to her best friend.

“I just wanted to hang out, watch some Netflix. What are you doing?” Jisoo asked, her voice laced with an icy tone.

“Rosie was bored and dragged me out, but she’s on her way home now. Why don’t we head inside?” Jennie quickly spoke and dragged Jisoo inside her place, shutting the door before Chaeyoung could get another word out.

“Uhm Goodnight...I guess.” Chaeyoung chuckled, finding a flustered Jennie to be too adorable for her own good.

Inside her condo, Jennie quickly tried to explain to Jisoo.

“Chu it’s not what it looked like! I was just...we were..we just hung out as friends that’s all. She took me to the arcade and we played all day and then we got home and we..we just hugged.”

“It certainly did not look that way to me Jennie.” Jisoo frowned, she was jealous, obviously.

“We’re just friends.”

“You don’t look at your friend like that.” Jisoo noted and Jennie frowned.

“Like what Chu?”

“Nothing...look I know that I told you to take care of her for me but please…” Jisoo trailed off, contemplating whether or not to continue or sentence or just leave it at that, but before she could get another word out Jennie spoke up, “She wrote a song for you.” Jennie didn’t know why but, thinking about that song again made her feel like someone was physically squeezing her heart.

“What?”

“She wrote a song for you and it’s beautiful.”

“How do you know that?”

“I just do...so trust me when I say that what you saw wasn't what it looked like.”

“Okay Jen I trust you...but you have to promise me that if you..if you start to fall for her that you’d tell me.”

“I promise.” Jennie forced a smile, the pinching sensation in her chest getting stronger.

~ ~ ~ ~

“What did you just say?”

“I said move back home.” Chaeyoung once again

“Rosie…”

“C’mon Jen, it’s not like we’ll sleep together or anything.” Chaeyoung chuckled, “We’ll still sleep in our own rooms. Just think of us as roommates..married roommates.” Chaeyoung once again let out a light laugh.

“Why?” Jennie asked.

“Because…I…” Chaeyoung trailed off, unsure if she can say the next few words or not, but ultimately Chaeyoung decided not to, “If you don’t want to then it’s okay.”

But the thing is...Jennie wants to.she really really wants too so she says, “Yes Rosie..I’ll move back home.”

~ ~ ~

Living with Chaeyoung again is exactly what Jennie dreamed her married life would be like..except they sleep in different rooms. The two leave for the office around the same time, so they would always have their breakfast together. Sometimes it would be Jennie that cooks or Chaeyoung, but most of the time it would be the two of them together in the kitchen like today.

“Rosie no that’s not it! It’s supposed to be a 2 to 2 to 2 ratio.” Jennie cutely whined, the two decided to try making the dalgona coffee Jennie had been seeing all over social media.

“I know but it’ll be bitter. You know I don’t like bitter.” Chaeyoung pouted.

“Just trust me, it won’t.”

“Fine.” Chaeyoung finally relented, moving out of the kitchen and sitting on a stool watching Jennie try to whip the mixture together.

“Stop it.” Jennie paused, and Chaeyoung looked at her scandalized, “What? I’m not doing anything, I’m just sitting here.” Chaeyoung replied.

“You’re staring. Stop.” but Chaeyoung just smiled and when she noticed Jennie slowing down, Chaeyoung got up, stood behind the shorter brunette, and slowly wrapped her arms over Jennie’s trapping the girl in a tender back hug, “Here let me take over.” Chaeyoung whispered.

Jennie’s heart was racing, her cheeks heating up, but she still subconsciously, snuggled even closer into Chaeyoung’s body.

“There..all whipped.” Chaeyoung stepped back, pulling Jennie out of her little comfort zone.

“Yeah uhm now we just have to put it all together.” Jennie managed to speak out without stuttering.

“Alright then.”

~ ~ ~ ~

Their third anniversary was right around the corner, and Chaeyoung was starting to stress.

“Okay what’s the emergency?” Lisa asked, seeing how stressed her best friend is at the moment.

“Our third wedding anniversary is coming up and I can’t decide what to plan.”

“Plan what?” Lisa feigned ignorance, she was hoping this wasn’t going to happen, but she knew from all the things Chaeyoung had been telling her about her time with Jennie that her friend was falling again..and this time even harder.

“I think that I’m starting to uhm fal…”

“What about Jisoo unnie.” Lisa interrupted Chaeyoung.

“What about her?”

“Chaeyoung she’s your girlfriend for christ’s sake!” Lisa was fuming.

“She is not my girlfriend Lisa!” Chaeyoung fired back.

“YES SHE IS CHAEYOUNG!!” Lisa stood up, yelling with her full chest.

“Lisa…”

“No Chae...if you don’t believe me then go and ask Jennie unnie. She’ll tell you the truth.” Lisa was beyond mad, so she left before she could say more than she should.

A week later, Jennie was all smiles while at the office. She had just finished a morning meeting and decided to call a certain blonde.

“Hey what’s up.” Chaeyoung answered her phone, tone cheery.

“Uhm are you free later this afternoon around like 5pm?” Jennie asked.

“Hmmm..I think so why?”

“Okay, I’ll pick you up. See you then.” Jennie quickly ended the phone call and began to put her plan in motion.

Time seemed to go by fast for the two and soon, Jennie was in the lobby waiting for Chaeyoung, she could have gone up but she has her reasons.

“For you, Roses for Rosie.” Jennie lit up when she saw Chaeyoung coming towards her, handing her a bouquet of red roses. Chaeyoung chuckled at the pun.

“Jen...what is all this?”

“You’ll see.” Jennie smiled and grabbed Chaeyoung’s hand, leading her to her car.

Jennie drove them to Chaeyoung’s favorite place for dinner.

“How’s the food?” Jennie asked, starting the conversation.

“It’s great, perfect. The food, ambiance, everything.” Chaeyoung smiled.

The two enjoyed their dinner, with light conversations.

“Alright all full?” Jennie asked, after they settled back into her car.

“Of course Jen, we finished all our food...although I do wish we could have gotten dessert.” Chaeyoung whined a little, Jennie chuckled.

“Uh Jen, where are we?” Chaeyoung asked, the two were in what looked like an empty field, the girl had driven them without her headlights on, claiming for it to be a surprise.

“You’ll see.” Jennie smiled, pressing a button on her car’s console and soon the roof came down, and a movie began to play from a giant screen.

“Jennie?” Chaeyoung once again turned to the girl.

“I know how much you’ve always wanted to go to a drive-in movie and I know how much you love classic films so I thought I could give you both.” Jennie smiled, while the intro of Roman Holiday was still playing.

The movie was about 2hrs long, and after it was done Jennie drove them towards their house, but of course with one last stop.

“I know it’s a little late, but you said you wanted dessert..so here.” Jennie handed Chaeyoung a mango flavored popsicle she had bought from the convenience store, while she had milk flavored for herself. The two were at the playground near their home.

“So tell me,” Chaeyoung began, after a few minutes of them just sitting down enjoying their ice cream watching the cars drive by, “What’s this all about?”

“I’ll tell you later.” Jennie smiled and the two fell into a comfortable silence once again.

The silence didn’t last long, Chaeyoung soon began to talk about random stuff happening in the company and somehow the two ended up just talking about their lives and what else they wish to achieve in their lives.

The night was perfect...for the both of them.

Jennie drove them home, the two about to separate in their own rooms when Chaeyoung gently grabbed Jennie by the arm, turning her around.

“Jen..tonight has been amazing. I really had a great time.” Chaeyoung smiled.

“I’m glad you enjoyed it Rosie.” Jennie smiled, while she gently cupped Chaeyoung’s face, and Chaeyoung leaned into her touch. Closing her eyes briefly, Chaeyoung cupped Jennie’s hand on her cheek.

“Jennie I…”

“Good night Rosie.” Jennie interrupted Chaeyoung, tiptoeing up to give Chaeyoung a quick peck on her cheek before dashing into her room. Her cheeks burning and her heart racing.

Meanwhile, in the hallway, Chaeyoung was stunned. She too had her cheeks burning and her heart racing.

“Jennie…” Chaeyoung smiled to herself, before heading inside and falling asleep with that giant smile still on her face.

It was 4 in the morning and Jennie was already wide awake...slowly, she made her way to Chaeyoung’s room.

Bending down...Jennie smiled as she watched Chaeyoung peacefully sleep. Tucking a stray strand behind her ear, Jennie gently spoke, “My Hubby..” Jennie began the butterflies in her stomach going crazy at just the term of endearment, “Since the first time I called you that...I wanted to say it out loud again. My hubby Rosie. It has a nice ring to it.” Jennie was smiling softly, her finger gently tracing the contours of Chaeyoung’s face, but soon her smile disappeared and she was brought back to reality.

“Park Chaeyoung, my hubby...I’m sorry and I hope that you’ll understand why I’m doing this.” Jennie whispered, placing a lingering kiss on Chaeyoung’s forehead before leaving...suitcase in tow.

The next day, Chaeyoung woke up and excitedly got out of bed to prepare breakfast for her and Jennie.

“Oh Mrs. Cho why are you here?” Chaeyoung asked, confused as to why her family’s head maid was here.

“Did you forget Chaeyoung? You told me to help you prepare a picnic for you and Jennie’s third anniversary.” Mrs. Cho replied and Chaeyoung smacked her head.

“Oh that’s right it’s our anniversary today.” Chaeyoung was still thinking about their evening together that she completely spaced out her anniversary surprise for Jennie.

Mrs. Cho didn’t stay long, she just dropped the basket off and helped prepare breakfast for the two. Chaeyoung set the table perfectly, before skipping to Jennie’s room to wake the girl up.

“Jen?” Chaeyoung knocked, but when she got no response carefully made her way inside. Chaeyoung frowned when she saw Jennie’s empty bed.

“Where are you?” She questioned, but noticed an envelope on her nightstand with Chaeyoung’s name written on it.

Picking up the letter, Chaeyoung felt nervous, but she still opened the letter.

My dearest Rosie,

First of all I want to say Happy anniversary Hubby. My Hubby...I really wish I could have called you that more often...and I also wish you could have called me your Wifey more often as well...Yeah that’s right Rosie I caught your little slip when we went to the arcade. You must be wondering why I’m writing to you huh...well the thing is Rosie, there are some things that we have been keeping from you. Jisoo really is your girlfriend and you love her very much. I can tell your frowning again, so stop. Let me explain...you see Rosie, the truth is after you woke up you thought that it was Jisoo who strung you along in the past, but it was me. The doctors said it was a defense mechanism, but Rosie you deserve the truth. It was me who you pretended to be girlfriends with, it was me that strung you along even though I had no feelings for you, and it was me who you resented. Not Jisoo. Jisoo is the reason why you found your smile back, she’s the one who brought my bright Rosie back. You’re probably fuming at me again...but that’s okay. I’m used to it.

Rosie..I know that you said I don’t get to call you that, but I’ve gotten used to calling you that ever since you woke up so until the end I’ll be using it….My Rosie I’m so sorry that you had to find out this way. I wanted to tell you sooner, but we got close again and I just...I wanted to stay in our own little world for a little while longer..but then someone knocked some sense into me and..well..they were right. One day you’ll remember it all and the hurt you’ll feel will be even more than before. I don’t want that Rosie...I can’t hurt you, not again. It’ll kill me if I did. So I decided that this time..it’s me. I’m the one that needs to let go. I’m letting you go now my Rosie.

With that, in my desk drawer there’s a manila folder. I’ve already signed the papers...I did this because someday, you’re going to wake up with that soft look on your face while you stare at the sleeping body next to you. Someday you’ll wake up and think to yourself “yeah...you’re my forever.” And when that someday comes, I wish that you’ll have a wonderful forever with the person that lights up your world. Be happy my Rosie, that’s all I can ever ask for.

Love,

Your Wifey, Jennie.

Chaeyoung finished reading the letter, her hands shaking, her knees giving up from under her, all the strength in her body gone.

“But you’re the one that’s always been lighting up my world.”
