Pain in the Knee

Unrelenting Fortitude

"Alright guys, this is your last song for your last live concert, so kill it out there!" one of the coordi's cheered with a clap.

The four laughed and gave her a thumbs up as the stage darkened and the fans began screaming, waving the gold balloons around in support.

As the music started the four climbed up onto the stage and danced around, Jun instantly going up to the crowd as Harii began singing their title song. When his part was finished he skipped over to where Jeri was dancing and danced with her, making the fans cheer louder.

Harii parted from her again and Jeri meandered down the stage, doing her small parts for the back-up singing until she missed a step on the stage, making her foot slam down onto the stage and an all too familiar pain shot up her leg. With a sigh, Jeri balanced herself on her right leg and began to swing her hand in the air to the beat of the song, but no longer moved from her spot.

Jun slid over to her, keeping a smile on his face for the fans, but the worry could still be seen in his eyes. Jun bent down to allow her to jump onto his back, and carried her around stage, finishing the song while Jeri held his microphone for him.

The song ended and the fans screamed and cheered, the three men bowing in thanks, Jun a little awkwardly considering his sister was still on his back, then moved off of the stage.

"Jeri-ah are you alright?!" Harii cried as soon as they were off stage, having seen her SOS on stage.

"I dislocated my knee again…" she pouted, glaring down at the joint in question.

"Jeri, this is like… the fifth time you've done that on stage, there's no possible way that's normal…" Setiawan sighed.

"Maybe we should take you to the hospital…" Harii began.

"NO! I don't want to go to the hospital!!" Jeri whined, tightening her arms around her brother's shoulder with a pout.

"You're such a brat, whether or not you want to go to the hospital doesn't really matter, because I'm taking you there when we get back to Korea, check?" Jun growled, looking back at his sister.

Jeri's pout deepened choosing to shift her gaze over to the wall instead of her group mates.

"It appears that Miss Isami has a severe case of Chondromalacia patellae," the doctor reported, standing next to the hospital bed.

"She has what??" Jun asked, never having heard of such a thing.

"Chondromalacia patellae. It's when the is inflammation of the underside of the patella, or the kneecap. Normally when this happens, it's usually taken care of with lots of rest, some medication and ice, but Jeri's case has grown to the point where there is little to no cartilage left in her knee; this is causing the bone to rub directly against the patella, thus grinding the two together as well as giving her knee no support when she dances, thus the constant dislocations on stage," the doctor explained.

"That sounds beautiful in poetry, but can you fix it?" Jeri deadpanned.

Jun gave the girl a glare and smacked her on the shoulder as the doctor flipped through his clipboard.

"There is something we can do for you, but it would require surgery and several weeks off so that you may recuperate," the man replied, looking back up at the siblings.

"S-S-Surgery??" Jeri squeaked.

"Yes, we would have to go in and replace your lost cartilage with a synthetic-"

"I don't wanna know what you're going to do!!!" Jeri wailed, waving her arms back and forth in fear.

Jun sighed and looked towards the older man. "Can you give us a minute please?"

The man nodded and left the room, closing the door behind him.

"Juunieeee!!" Jeri cried.

"Jeri you heard what he said, they can help you with your knee, stop it from dislocating on stage. They'd knock you out for the operation and drug you up on morphine and I'll be there for you when they knock you out and when you wake up," Jun began, knowing all too well his sister's discomfort with the thought of surgery. "This might also help you out with the pain…"

After a couple seconds of staring at the floor, Jeri sighed and nodded.

"Fine… but you better be there!!" she barked, pointing her finger at him with a firm glare.

Jun nodded with a small smile and ruffled her hair, standing and leaving to find the doctor.

Jeri sighed and flopped down onto the floor in the star position, a happy sigh escaping her when her back cracked.

"Still not getting much sleep?" Harii asked sitting beside her.

"I never get enough sleep," she laughed.

"Are you guys still decent?" a feminine voice called.

"No, but you can come in anyways," Jun called out with a grin.

"Jun!" Harii scolded as the door opened.

"Good afternoon Nyua," Jeri laughed, waving at their manager.

"I'm surprised you guys are in here, you're all done with performances…" Nyua laughed, closing the door behind her.

"Our maknae's a slave driver," Setiawan laughed.

The others laughed as well and Jeri threw her shoe at the leader.

"Anyways, have you guys heard of the ISAC?" Nyua asked, sitting on the floor with them.

"ISAC?" Setiawan, Jeri and Jun chorus.

"Oh, oh, oh, I know! Idol Sports Athletes Competition! They decided to try it out this summer! Bands, groups and other idols are invited to go," Harii cheered.

"Correct Harii-ssi," Nyua smiled. "Well, you guys have been given the option to join if you want."

"Wow really? That's so cool!" Jeri grinned.

"When is it?" Jun asked.

"September 14th," Nyua replied.

"Ummm….."

Nyua turned to Jeri with a confused look.

"Jun's scheduled for a drama, Setiawan's become an MC and I have my operation on the 12th…" Jeri listed.

"Omo, I completely forgot!" Nyua cried, covering in embarrassment.

"They can't go, but can I still compete?" Harii asked.

"Well… I don't see why not…" the woman replied slowly.

"Yeah, that'a boy Harii!" Jun cheered.

"Bring home the gold!" Setiawan added with a laugh.

Harii grinned and nodded, giving them a thumbs up. Nyua turned back to the maknae and gave her a kind smile.

"I really hope that your operation goes well Jeri-ssi, the last thing any of us want is for you to be in any more pain than you are already in."

"Thanks Nyua, I'm sure it'll go fine," Jeri grinned back. "Well, I'm going to go for a walk, I'll be right back."

"Alright~!" Harii sang, giving her a wave. "Tell Super Junior-sunbaes hi for us~"

"Yes mother," Jeri sang back.

The others chuckled as Jeri walked out of the dance room and down the hall.

Jeri had only nine days until her operation on her knee, and although Jun continued to remind her that everything would go fine, she still couldn't help but worry. What if something went wrong? What if the operation actually made the pain worse? What if-

"Jeri?"

Jeri gave a shriek in surprise, jumping nearly three feet in the air. Spinning around, she noticed Zhou Mi and Donghae poking their heads out of their practise room, Henry having come out to place a hand on her shoulder.

"Jeez Pancake, you scared the crap out of me," she wheezed, trying to calm her heartbeat and breathing.

"S-sorry… you just looked like you were worrying about something…" he apologized, giving her a sorry look.

Jeri sighed and shook her head with a small smile. "No, it's not your fault, I actually was worrying about something…"

"What is it? Are some fans bothering you?" Zhou Mi asked with a frown.

"N-no, it's not the fans… it's just…"

Jeri trailed off, feeling her insecurity about the operation come back.

A hand gently rested on her arm making her look up from the floor, Henry giving her one of his usually adorable smiles.

"I'm having an operation on my knee in little more than a week and I'm freaking out a bit…" she sighed.

"AN OPERATION!?!"

"Why are you having an operation? Are you alright??"

"Clearly not if she's having an operation!!"

"GUYS!!"

The trio stopped talking and turned back to the girl, seeing she was rubbing her temples in slight annoyance.

"I keep dislocating my knee on stage and it's not only ticking me off, but it's worrying everyone else, so I'm having an operation that's hopefully going to fix it," she explained.

"Hopefully fix it? It's not a 100% chance?" Zhou Mi asked.

"Nothing's 100% Tui…" Jeri mumbled.

"Jeri-ah! I'm sure that the operation will go just fine! And if not then we'll go after the doctors and demand them to do it properly… or at least demand compensation…" Donghae claimed, placing his hands on the girl's shoulder and giving her a firm look.

Jeri couldn't help but laugh as she noticed the determined looks on their faces. Suddenly, she didn't feel as scared about it.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

'Hey brat, the drama's running longer than I thought it was going to, so I don't think I'll make it there for your operation. Just remember, deep breaths and don't punch any of the nice hospital staff ;)'

Jeri sighed and turned off her phone and stuffed it back into the pocket of her jacket. She was still pretty freaked out about going through with this surgery and she’d hoped that when the doctors knocked her out to drill a hole into her kneecap that she'd have someone there to hold her hand.

"Are you allowed to have visitors?"

Jeri's head swung towards the door to see seven faces poking around the frame making her laugh.

"Even if I'm not you guys can still come in," she grinned, motioning for them to come closer.

The SuJu men dashed into the room, Sungmin quickly sitting on the bed beside Jeri and hugging her.

"Oh Jeri-ah! You look so lonely in this scary hospital!" he whined.

"Yeah, I'm surprised Jun isn't here with you…" Eunhyuk added, looking around the room for the man.

"His drama is keeping him there longer than he thought so he's not going to get here on time…" Jeri muttered with a slight pout.

"Well then I guess it's a good thing we're here! We'll stay with you Jer-"

"We have to go on our own show Sungmin-ah," Leeteuk sighed, rubbing the back of his head.

"What?! But we can't leave Jeri here all alone! She's having surgery!!" Sungmin wailed.

"And I'm sure I'll be fine Mickey, you don't have to make such a big fuss over it," Jeri claimed, putting on a brave face and patting the man's shoulder.

"B… but…"

"Ummm…"

The others turned their heads to Henry when he slowly raised his hand.

"I… I don't have a schedule until 6…"

"Thata boy Henry! Take the initiative!" Shindong cheered, putting the younger boy in a headlock and ruffling his hair.

"Well I guess you can have Henry here for you until they knock you out," Siwon chuckled.

"That's good! One should never be alone in time like this! The rest of us will be here for you in spirit Jeri-ah!" Yesung cheered, giving her a determined look.

Jeri nodded her thanks, and after the others gave her a hug and wished her good luck, they filed out of the hospital room, leaving her and Henry.

"Are you nervous?" Henry asked, awkwardly shifting from foot to foot.

"A little," Jeri admitted with a chuckle. "The last time I was in a hospital was… for a reason that could have been prevented, and it just wasn't a fun experience for me. I had Jun there with me though so it wasn't that bad."

She turned and gave her fellow maknae a smile.

"I'm glad you could be here for me this time Pancake."

Henry's face went slightly pink but gave her a grin and a thumbs up.

After a couple moments of silence, he turned and brought the nearby chair closer to the bed making Jeri snicker.

"So how did you like working with Rino again?" he asked, sitting down and propping his feet up onto the bed.

"Do you even need to ask? She's awesome! I wish I could have talked to her a bit more but you guys were a little rushed for time. Which reminds me, I still have your hat and jacket," she laughed. "You ran away too fast for me to give them back and I keep forgetting to throw them at you."

"You have my hat and jacket?" he questioned, giving her a confused look.

"Yeah, remember, you asked me to hold onto them for you and then promptly left once recording was finished," she reminded with a chuckle.

"Oh yeah… woops…"

Jeri laughed and reached over to fluff his hair.

"You look good with long hair, but I still think you look nicer when it's short," she claimed, running her fingers through his bangs and letting them drop back onto his forehead.

"You think I should cut and colour it?" he asked, not stopping her.

"Mmmmmm… I don't know, the colour looks nice on you, it brings out your eyes, when I can see them," she laughed, brushing back his bangs again as he laughed. "I think if you had it cut down so that it was just to the back of your neck it would look nice. Or maybe perm it. OK, no, you know what, I want to see you in ringlets."

Henry snorted and lowered his head trying not to burst out laughing as Jeri laughed.

The door opened again and this time a couple nurses walked in with small trays of equipment.

"Alright, we're going to put your IV in now so can you please lay back?" one of them asked with a kind smile.

Jeri nodded and shuffled down onto the bed and rested her head on the pillow after taking a deep breath.

As the nurses busied themselves with cleaning Jeri's right arm and setting up the IV and monitors, Henry shuffled forward in his seat slightly and took her left hand in his. When Jeri turned her head to look at him, Henry simply gave her an encouraging smile and a small squeeze making her smile as well.

"Thanks again… Pancake…"

Henry watched as Jeri's eyes slowly closed and her breathing became even, staying by her side until the doctors showed up a couple minutes later.
