EXO ONE SHOT COLLECTION

Sehun/fem!Kai || words: 2128 || not a drabble || summary: even second male leads have their happy ending.

Writer’s block balls.

As a young writer, Jongin was filled with imaginations. Being a writer was her dream ever since she was a little girl and now that she’s one, every day was the best day ever. Her ideas were amazing, as said so by the publishing company and her editor, Suho, so it wasn’t a surprise that one of her books got an award, even translating it into English for readers around the world.

Footprints in the Sand, by Kim Jongin: New York’s bestselling book.

Of course, after that, Jongin felt amazing as ever! And pressured, yes…pressured.

Jongin stares at the blank document on her laptop.

Especially when she’s currently suffering from a ing writer’s block.

“Jongin-ah, I suggest you go out for a walk.” Suho said over the phone, not even surprised to hear faint sounds of gunshots. Jongin, after all is a hardcore gamer. So to ease her mind because of stress, she resorts to her PS3 and Xbox360 for comfort (yes, she’s planning on buying that Xbox1 and Ps4 in the future.)

“Oppa, you know the outside world and – Oh, ing hell! My weapon broke! – me doesn’t, you know,” She shrugs, eyes focused on the screen as she repeatedly hit the controller’s buttons. “Click.”

“But how can you get any ideas for your next book if you’re cooped up inside the house?” Suho sighed. He’s willing to bet that Jongin wasn’t listening and instead, was completely focused on playing that zombie game on Xbox, Dead Island or something? “Jongin.”

No response.

“Jongin, I am going to donate your game consoles to charity if you don’t-“

“Fine, I’m going! I’m going!” The sound of the controller falling on the floor was heard.

Suho could only shake his head in disbelief. Jongin’s 22 but somehow, it felt like he’s taking care of 16 year old kid.

Jongin watched in boredom at the people around her.

She saw a few kids running to and fro, a dog playing with its owner and a few couples, old and young, strolling with hands locked with each other. Jongin sighs. Watching these scenarios, she could make a few stories – short or novel-like kinds. She could make a story about childhood friends turned lovers with a tragic end. She could make a story about a woman taking care of a stray dog not knowing that this said dog was actually a shape shifter then bam! Another romance plot.

Jongin whines. No, too cliché, no, too common. Yuck. That’s so ing – oh, what’s this?

She watches in pure curiosity at the scene near the fountain area.

There was a guy, yes, and a girl! She’s busy talking to him with a smile on her face. But contradicting to the guy’s sparkle in his eyes, the girl was looking at him in adoration not as a lover, but as a friend. Hmm… interesting.

The two were busy talking that they didn’t notice another male approaching them with a smile on his face. Oh. Oh! Jongin hummed in amusement as she scratches her chin. The newcomer was freaking hot, yes, very, very hot, Jongin thought. With that slicked black hair, hard back and chiseled face. Woah. By the looks of it, the trio were close friends. After Mr. Newcomer wrapped his arms around the duo’s shoulders, that’s when Jongin spotted it – the look that the girl gave the newcomer.

Jongin grins. Interesting. It was cliché but seeing it in action in real life was really interesting. It was like watching a Korean drama without the psychological events, super powers and kidnapping (I mean, come on! Every Korean drama consists of a love triangle. Sometimes square.)

“Poor guy.” She mutters under her breath as she stares at the first guy.

Everyone knows the second male leads never get the girl.

“This is Oh Sehun.” Suho introduced the newcomer to Jongin at her personal office. “He will be your new proofreader for the moment since Kyungsoo is on a leave.”

Right, Kyungsoo-oppa’s on an anniversary trip with his wife, Ryeowook.

Sehun bowed his head in respect to the author. “It is nice to meet you, Ms. Kim. I look forward to  working with you.”

Jongin furrowed her eyebrows and waved him in dismissal. “Yes, yes, same.” She then took a quick glance at this Oh Sehun, momentarily tearing her attention away from her laptop, and then does a double take. With a snap of a finger, she points at Sehun with both eyebrows raised. “Oh, second male lead guy!”

Sehun and Suho could only look at each other in confusion.

Jongin giggles. With the current story she’s working on, this is gonna be perfect.

Working with Sehun is very, very interesting.

Although it wasn’t obvious, Jongin would notice how Sehun’s facial expressions would change every time he would take a look on his phone. She would notice the proofreader’s small smile, meaning, the girl was the one who probably sent it. If it was the normal stoic one, then it must be someone else. Jongin grins as she types. Perfect.

Sehun once read the first chapter and was completely perplexed at its content.

“What the story about?”

Jongin just tapped her chin. “Wait for it.”

During another one of her writer’s block episodes just because of a ing romantic scene description, Jongin asked for Sehun’s help regarding about the topic. What he answered Jongin was a complete surprise.

Her name was Tao, the girl Sehun’s been crushing on since he was still in middle school.

She was the most beautiful girl he had ever laid his eyes on and being friends with her was the best gift everyone could ever asked for. She was gifted, talented, hot, y (Sehun’s description) and a very down to earth kind of gal. But of course, he knew that the love he has for Tao is purely one-sided for she was, and still is, completely infatuated with their other friend, Kris.

Kris was the epitome of perfection, well that was until they knew of his very artistic side. Nevertheless, Tao still adores him and so is Kris. Too bad the two are still oblivious that their feelings towards each other are reciprocated.

“8 years of one-sided and unrequited love.” Sehun groans when he sees his phone screen lit up. “I want to stop loving her. I really do.” He buried his face in his arms. “But I can’t.”

Jongin just stared at him.

“Pathetic.”

Hearing that, Sehun’s head shot up to meet eyes with the young author.

Jongin sighed and looked back at her laptop. “Well, second male leads never get the girl anyway so I think you should really give up.” She spared him one quick glance. “Wasting 8 years of your life without even making a move.” She shakes her head and looked back down. “You’re hopeless.”

That must have triggered something inside Sehun because the next thing that happened, he was calling Tao and asked her for dinner later tonight. And with an angry huff, Sehun gave Jongin a hard glare.

“I am not and never was the second male lead.” He scowled. “And I will get the girl.”

After a month of poured effort and gut pushing, Sehun finally got the girl.

Jongin was there to witness everything.

She began to type on her laptop.

“Jongin-ah, where’s the chapter 32 of the-“

“Hmm… you can’t see it.” Jongin said, drumming her fingers on the keyboard. “Not until I finish it.”

Sehun opened his mouth to protest but the author just waved him off. “Go and spend more time with Tao, second male lead. Go, shoo.”

“I’m not the second male lead.” Sehun pouts before waving away with a happy smile plastered on his face as he left Jongin’s office.

The typing continues.

Suho furrowed his brows at the young author, who seems to be busy making her book. It would have been okay, but Jongin seems to be intent on finishing her book that the only time she would come out of her office was a mere 20 minutes, which consists of taking a bath and eating her breakfast.

Suho delivered Jongin’s dinner and frowns at the sight of her untouched lunch.

“Why haven’t you eaten your lunch?”

“Not hungry.”

Suho’s frown deepened. “If you don’t eat something, I’ll –“

“Already donated it.”

The elder froze. “What?”

Jongin blinks up to look at her editor. “The game consoles. I donated them to the orphanage that I sponsored last May.” Suho blinks rapidly gaping at the sudden information that was thrown at him. “I want to be left alone when I work, so if you’ll excuse me, oppa?”

Jongin wasn’t fond of cliché.

She tends to write things based on reality, to the way she actually felt with everything she interacts with. The way she would normally talk to people, to coo at cute stuffs and to run along like a little energetic child.

The reality of falling in love.

There were no butterflies, no sweat covered skin whenever she was in the same room as him. No cat got and no awkward and tense atmosphere that only she can detect. Her knees doesn’t turn jelly and her stomach doesn’t have butterflies.

But falling in love feels good.

You can’t explain it.

It just happens.

Jongin stopped writing, fingers hovering above the keys as she stares at dimly lit screen of her laptop. Then after a moment, she laughs, before covering in an attempt to muffle them. She sighs.

She finally realizes that she’s one of the characters in her story.

“Jongin wanted to give you this, but she can’t because she’s busy preparing for her promotional trip.” Suho handed Sehun a thick hardbound book. Sehun takes it in one hand then furrowed his brows.

“Promotional trip?”

“For her new book.” The editor points at the book he’s holding. “It’s gonna be 6 months… or most. I don’t know. Depends if she accepts the offer of directing Footprints in the Sand. It’ll take probably 10 months or 8.”

Sehun looks at the book once again. “Have you… How’s Jongin?”

“To be honest, I don’t know.”

It took 3 weeks since Jongin’s departure did Sehun opened the book and began to read it.

Kris nearly jumps out of his chair when he shifted his attention at the sudden burst of the door in Sehun and Tao’s shared room in their cozy apartment, staring wide-eyed at the younger’s disheveled state. Tao gasped at the sight of her boyfriend that she almost dropped the tray.

“Sehun-ah?”

“Dude, we were just about to call you that the –“

Sehun waved his hand frantically, gesturing for them to shut up. Then he said, “Tao, I’m breaking up with you.”

Tao’s eyes went wide. “What?”

Hearing that made Kris frown. “What the man?”

“No, look. Just hear me out!” Sehun points at Kris. “You’re supposed to be the male lead and Tao is the female one.”

“That doesn’t even make –“

“You were supposed to end up with each other, not Tao and I! I mean,” Sehun looked lost for a moment when he saw the look on Tao’s face but then snaps out of his thoughts. “You!” He pointed at his now ex-girlfriend. “You have always liked Kris but never got the guts to say it because you thought he doesn’t like you but he does! He does and he’s just using me as an excuse just to see you!”

Tao snapped her head towards said giant, whose frown suddenly turned into a look of surprise. “You are?” Kris gulped.

“I-uh…”

“It’s like…It’s like we’re in a story and you two are the main leads. You two were supposed to end up with each other and have your fairy tale kind of ending and I’m just…” Sehun looks at the book. “I’m just the second male lead.”

Upon saying that, he drops the book and makes a dash past the two. Kris shakes his head to snap out of his confused state. “Wait, Sehun. Where the are you going?!”

“To get my happy ending!”

Then he went back again. “Actually, I’m going to Boston. Look after Brownie, okay?”

Boston

“You seriously have a way of making boys run after you.” Suho chuckled as he gently closed the book, staring at Jongin, who was currently spending her break time playing Clash of Clans on her IPad. “I should give you points for your creativity.”

Jongin just flashed the editor a smirk just in time they heard the doorbell ring.

Because in every story, there is also a second female lead, waiting for the second male lead to notice her.
