Part 39
The Stranger
Throughout the next week, the small family did everything a family would do together: go for walks, play out, take photos, have a picnic, watch movies, cook, eat and the two parents would go to sleep hugging each other in Daehyun's room and wake up finding Jongup between them, curled up, and sleeping peacefully. Everything was perfect and they were all happy.
Until the DNA results came in.
Yongguk had received them one night and put them through the Jung house's letter box the next morning. Daehyun picked it up and took it to the kitchen where Youngjae was eating breakfast with Jongup.
"They're here," Daehyun said, sitting down next to Youngjae. He placed the envelope in the middle of the table and all three stared at it, wanting to open it, but also not wanting to.
They sat there in silence until Youngjae picked it up. "Let's open it then," he said, putting his finger under the seal and ripping it open. He unfolded the piece of paper inside and stared at it, not saying anything.
"Well?" Daehyun asked, nervous.
Youngjae said nothing.
"Appa?" Jongup asked, scared.
Once again, Youngjae said nothing.
"For crying out loud! What does it say?" Daehyun half-shouted, inpatient now.
"Jonguppie," Youngjae started, his voice weak. Daehyun's heart plummeted.
"Yes?" Jongup replied, his own heart close to breaking.
Youngjae stood up and went round the table to hug Jongup. "Your wish has finally come true." Youngjae kissed Jongup's forehead, tears of joy running down his cheeks.
"Appa?"
"Yes. Appa's here now," Youngjae said, hugging his son tighter.
Daehyun smiled, over-joyed, "Youngjae's his Appa," he whispered to himself.
"Youngjae's his Appa."
Daehyun suddenly groaned in pain and grabbed his head.
Images were flashing in his mind, in front of his eyes, as a painful memory came back up: an elevator, a dorm, a door, a girl, a rubbish chute, a warm back.
And then everything went black.
