Chapter 20
99% Males 1% Females“Will you marry me?” Lu Han heard himself ask, again.
Hua looked at him with her tear stained eyes. “Lu Han, are you sure?” she asked, worried.
He felt himself smile. “Of course.” he said, as he kissed her softly on the lips. “For our child.”
Hua pulled away from the kiss and smiled. “Thank you, Lu Han.” she said. “I can’t wait to be a mom.”
“And, I can’t wait to be a father.” he said.
All the sudden, Lu Han could feel himself panicking. What is going on?, he thought. He was in a room and Hua was on the ground. Her face was covered in bright, red, warm blood. Lu Han quickly looked down at his hands. They were bloodied. He knew suddenly that the blood was not his, but Hua’s.
Lu Han woke up suddenly, gasping for air. He quickly sat up in bed. He looked around the unfamiliar room and then realized that he was in Mia’s room. Lu Han had fallen asleep with Mia on her full sized bed. Although she already made her decision, Lu Han wanted to comfort the best that he could for the rest of the night. He turned to look at her. Mia was still asleep with her back turned towards him.
Lu Han shook his head. Another bad dream, he thought.
He hasn’t had any bad dreams like that in a long time. Well, at least, ever since he came to Korea. Why was he suddenly having nightmares again? But, then again…
Those weren’t even nightmares… They were just memories, thought Lu Han. He took in deep breathes. He frowned as he lay down on the bed, trying to fall back asleep.
It was impossible. The horror of the dream made Lu Han shivered as vivid memories flowed back into his mind. He didn’t want to sleep anymore, but he didn’t want to be alone. He shifted his body towards Mia’s. Her breathing was even and relaxed.
Lu Han felt scared as he lay there in the dark. He knew that the sun wouldn’t rise for a few more hours. He tried to close his eyes and tried to force himself back asleep. That didn’t work. He wanted someone to accompany him at a time like this when he is afraid of the dark, unknown world.
“Mia.” said Lu Han, soflty. He placed his hand on her shoulder, slightly shaking her. “Mia.”
“Hm?” she questioned, turning around to him. Her eyes were slightly opened. “What?”
“You were snoring…” lied Lu Han. “And, it was annoying.” He had to think of some excuse to wake her up. It had to be a typical excuse that he knows that Mia would think he would do.
“Are you sick?” asked Mia, opening her eyes. “You’re sweating.”
Lu Han’s hand quickly came up to touch his forehead and then looked all over his body. He was covered in cold sweat. “I-I think so.” he lamely replied.
“Hm.” replied Mia, closing her eyes. She scooted closer to him. “Mason used to hold me to sleep all the time when I had the flu… I might as well do that with you.”
Lu Han felt her wrapped her short arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest. Before he knew it, he could hear her snoring. She was actually snoring this time around. And, that annoyed him. Lu Han would rather Mia be up and awake to talk to distract him. Although she was only awake for a few seconds, he felt better.
He was no longer afraid, knowing that Mia was there with him and that made him happy.
The two woke up early and Mia was trying to Face Time Heawoo. Lu Han was in the restroom when he heard her say something. He was brushing his teeth and walked out of the bathroom.
“Uh, is Oh Heawoo there?” asked Mia.
Lu Han walked over to her. The person she was Face Timing was definitely not Heawoo. Instead it was a good looking guy. He called for Heawoo.
“Heawoo Noona!” he said.
Mia just waited around, uncomfortably. Her friend eventually popped out of nowhere. Mia smiled. “Heawoo!” she said, happily.
“Mia!” she smiled into the camera. “How’s your musical practices?”
She just smiled. “They’re good.” she nodded.
Lu Han just continued to brush his teeth. Maybe I should call Kris, he thought as he went back to the bathroom. I haven’t talked to him in a long time.
“Hello?” asked a husky, warm voice.
“Kris?” asked Lu Han, happy to be able to talk to his friend.
“LU HAN?!” he asked, excited. “Oh my God! How are you? How’s Korea? Are you well? How’s the food? Is your dad’s friend’s family treating you well? Are-”
“Kris, slow down.” said Lu Han. “Let’s get talk about business first. Are investigators still trying to find dirt about me? Dad says that he was able to clear it…”
“They stopped asking me questions about you a month ago.” replied Kris. “I haven’t have time to call you. Sorry about that…”
“No, it’s OK. You’re busy with school anyways. I should have asked Dad if it was safe to call you.” said Lu Han. “How was… Hua’s funeral?”
“It was sad in a way.” replied Kris. “I couldn’t announce the funeral because of your ties to the investigation. So, I had to do it secretly.”
“It doesn’t really matter since she’s never had any real friends... What did you do?” asked Lu Han, curious.
“I wasn’t sure… I just buried her ashes at the Beijing Hill cemetery.” answered Kris, carefully. “I hope that that was OK.”
“No, that was what I would have wanted to do anyways. And, I’m sure that was how Hua would have wanted. Somewhere there is a lot of sunshine and is quiet…” said Lu Han.
That was all that she wanted in her life, thought Lu Han.
Lu Han closed his eyes as he took in a deep breath. His ex girlfriend had committed suicide a month before Uncle Ching forced him to heading over to Korea. She used a butcher knife and stabbed herself multiple times in her bedroom. By the time Lu Han got over to her condo, she was lying in a pool of blood with her last few breaths of life.
He tried to save Hua from bleeding to death by wrapping her up in a blanket to stop the bleeding, but was useless. She died from bleeding to death. Out of frustration, Lu Han threw the weapon across the living room right when he heard a loud scream. He turned to the doorway and there stood Hua’s housekeeper.
She quickly averted her eyes to the blood soaked blanket on the ground and at his blood stained clothes. She was staring at him like he was a murder. Before Lu Han could explain what was going on, she ran off and screamed throughout the hallway.
Within seconds, the police arrived at the scene. Lu Han could have run, but where could he go with blood soaked clothes. He was arrested as the major suspect of a suicide-turned-into-homicide case.
Uncle Ching quickly stepped into the investigation to try to stop the police from investigating any farther. The government knows that the Ching family is wealthy, prosperous, and is well known throughout China. They persisted to target Lu Han as the murderer even when the only evidence they had were the fingerprints on the butcher knife. Regardless, that was enough evidence to convict anyone as a murderer.
Out of desperation to save his only child from the jail cell, Uncle Ching did what he knew will shut up the government. He used money to seal the lips of everyone that was involved. Obviously, Uncle Ching wouldn’t hand out money like nothing. He made sure that Lu Han’s reputation was protected by having all the people sign contracts. You spill the beans, you better be hoping that you’ll see tomorrow’s daylight.
Uncle Ching isn’t the type to use crude tactics to get his way. He usually used words, but words aren’t good enough for government officials or low ranked police officers. They want money and he has plenty of that. So, he might as well use what he has with a deal. It seems like a risky investment, but in the long run, the benefits are much better.
He would do anything for his one and only child, Lu Han. It took 5 months to clear Lu Han’s name that was why Uncle Ching forced Lu Han to go to Korea.
Kris was also targeted because he is known to be Lu Han’s close friend. The government had tapped into Kris’s phone lines without his acknowledgement. He didn’t know that until a police officer slipped and told him when he was forced to be interviewed at the police station. So, Lu Han was forbidden from calling Kris or interacting with people outside of home. He became socially deprived. That was one of the reasons why he was so mad when he first came to Korea.
“Your dad wanted to throw everything in Hua’s condo away…” started Kris. “But, I got there before the cleaners got to it, so I was able to get some things that I thought would be important to you.”
“Thank you.” said Lu Han.
“I don’t know how you’re going to feel about this… But, it turned out that Hua had a miscarriage the morning of the suicide.” said Kris, almost in a whisper. “She scribbled that in her dairy…”
Lu Han wanted to let out a cry. He had found out that Hua was pregnant a few weeks before her death. She was so excited when she found out because she was abandoned at a park when she was 2 weeks old. In a sense, she wanted to become a mother to fill up the empty space in her heart.
Hua had always been an orphan and was never adopted. She was scouted by a modeling agency on the streets because of her beauty and became a model. Lu Han met her through a fashion show when one of his friends used him as a model.
Lu Han proposed to her the day after she told him that she was pregnant. There was no use denying that he was the father of the unborn child. The two were ually active.
“She did say that she that she was once diagnosed to be clinically depressed.” commented Lu Han, softly. “If only she would have called me.”
“I asked your dad about where you were living and I already shipped Hua’s diary to you.” said Kris. “She wrote a lot of personal things in there. I hope that through that, you’ll be able to understand her more.”
“Thank you, Kris.” said Lu Han.
Before he said good bye, Kris quickly asked him a question. “Did you ever loved Hua?” he asked.
Lu Han hesitated to answer the question. “I-I… Honestly, I cared for her, but I wouldn’t say I was in love with her.”
