Chapter 19
99% Males 1% Females************************************
Lu Han uselessly stood around as Aunt Chung knocked on Mia’s door. She was trying to get Mia to eat.
“Mia!! You need to eat your dinner!!” yelled Aunt Chung, as she knocked on the door. “Mia, please!”
There was no answer on the other end. Aunt Chung turned to Lu Han and shook her head. She placed the tray of food by the door’s side. She turned to Lu Han with a beaten smile. “I tried.” she said and with that she left to go to bed.
It was already midnight.
Lu Han swallowed hard, as he went downstairs and got himself a bowl of rice. Maybe we can eat dinner together, he thought. He went back up stairs and took the tray of food off the ground and headed to his room. I could get her to open the door if I get Misty to scratch the bathroom door, he thought. He quickly glanced over at the cat sleeping on his bed and smiled.
Lu Han placed the tray on his desk. He picked Misty off the bed and placed her in the bathroom. The cat went and sat by the door, not doing anything. Lu Han let out a sigh.
Just scratch the door, he thought.
Misty looked over her shoulder at Lu Han, still not doing anything. He shook his head as he went and sat on his bed, tired. He lay down, staring at the ceiling.
I can see why Mia was so sensitive when she first told me about her career goals, thought Lu Han.
All the sudden, he heard a noise. Scratching. Misty was scratching the bathroom door to Mia’s room. Lu Han quickly got off the bed and grabbed the tray off the desk. He headed into the bathroom just as Mia opened the door. He could tell from her facial expression that she was surprised to see him.
“What are you doing?” asked Mia, as Misty went into her room.
For some reason, Lu Han couldn’t find the words to explain what he was doing. “Uh… I-I.” he started. “I thought that you would be hungry.”
Mia stared at him. He could tell that she has been crying from her swollen eyes. “Maybe we can have dinner together.” suggested Lu Han.
She flashed him a weak smile and nodded her head. He quickly entered her bedroom and placed the tray on the ground, next to her bed. Mia took her place next to him and he handed her a bowl of rice.
“Sorry, I totally forgot to reheat the food.” said Lu Han, as he ate a piece of meat.
He was about to get up to go downstairs, but Mia quickly stopped him. “Lu Han, it’s OK.” she said. “The food is still warm.”
He nodded his head slowly as he sat back down. They ate in silence. Lu Han looked around the room. It didn’t seem like Mia did anything. Perhaps she just sat in bed and cried because her computer wasn’t even on.
Lu Han looked over at Mia when they finished their dinner together. “I heard your song earlier…” he started, slowly. “It was really good.”
Mia stiffly nodded her head, as she leaned on the side of her bed. “I wonder if Dad is right…” she said, with a monotone voice. “I wonder if I am throwing my life away to a wish that I hope will come true.”
“Have you talked to Mason?” asked Lu Han.
Lu Han has only talked to Mason a few times over the phone, but he seemed to be a warm, down to earth, loving person. He knows that her brother would be the one to cheer her up in times like this.
“Mason?” questioned Mia, with a weak voice. There was a silence. “I don’t feel like bothering him. He needs to focus on school… And, he’s an ocean away. There’s not much he can do.”
“He can comfort you.” added Lu Han.
Mia turned to him. Her eyes were watery. “I don’t know.” she said, shaking her head. “This is tiresome… Mason and I have been through this many times before, but this time… I said everything that I kept inside me. It’s so tiring to be fighting about the same thing over and over again, which happens to be my future career.
“I don’t want to drag it on any more… I’m just really tired of this nonsense… And, I know that Mason is as well. He will support me as long as he can… But, I know that he will start to doubt my decision like I am now.”
“You don’t want to become a composer anymore?” asked Lu Han, surprised.
Mia swallowed hard. “Yeah, but we’re already halfway through the semester… It’s useless to change your major when you can’t take the classes you need to.” she said.
Lu Han stared at the young woman in front of him. She looked extremely tired, almost as if she hasn’t slept for days. Her eyes were bloodshot red from the crying.
Is she really giving up?, he thought. There’s no way. I see so much happiness in her when she plays her piano or listen to music. She has to be joking… But, who is here for her to joke around with? I’m not her dad.
“What major are you considering?” asked Lu Han.
“International Studies.” replied Mia with a shrug. “It’s too late to start a Biology or Chemistry degree because I would be a year behind. And, since I like learning about new cultures, that would be perfect.”
Maybe she isn’t fooling around after all, thought Lu Han as he looked away.
“I’ll be there for you even if Mason doesn’t stand by your side anymore.” he said. “You shouldn’t change yourself to fit your father’s wants. You are who you are and he should learn how to accept that.”
“Lu Han, please.” said Mia, with tears falling. She grabbed his arm. “Please don’t say words like that. I don’t want you to say things like that. I don’t want you to take the burden of supporting me like Mason has too… Please.”
He looked down at her. Damn… She has a point, he thought. Like what Dad says, I should always be careful with what I get myself into.
“It’s kind of you to think of others before yourself.” commented Lu Han.
“No.” Mia said, shaking her head. “I know that I’ve made Mason suffered enough with my tears, anger, and frustration… I honestly think that it’s time that let go of that dream that I have of becoming a composer.”
Author’s Note:
Hi everyone! Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter! I know that it was short… But, at least I updated, right? ^^
Mia doesn’t want to become a composer anymore? And, Lu Han is too quick to support her? Hmmm… He always gets himself into trouble. (In this case, it’s not bad.)
