A Cliché Family
Fortyeight
Jonghyun calls Kibum one afternoon in late April and asks him to meet up with him in the evening if it is possible. Kibum doesn't like the serious tone the other had had in the phone but he agrees nonetheless. He has always time to see his oldest son. Jinki would understand and neither Minho or Taemin would care very much that he wouldn't be home until later. He drives to the restaurant that Jonghyun has asked him to meet him in when he finishes work for the day.
Jonghyun is sitting there with a girl by his side and he waves with a wide smile when he finally sees Kibum. The older man is a little skeptical when he gets closer. He doesn't recognize the girl and it worries him a little that Jonghyun has asked him to meet them here instead of bringing the girl home. All sort of worst case scenarios run through his mind and when he reaches them, he has already convinced himself that Jonghyun is going to tell him that he's getting married, despite his 22 years of age and that the girl is pregnant. And then he panics a little internally because he's only 45 and he is so not ready to be a grandfather already! Jonghyun gets up from his seat and hugs Kibum and points to the seat in front of them.
"Hey dad. I already ordered the food, I think it'll be here shortly." Kibum sits down and wonders where Jonghyun got the money from. It's not like he has a job beside his studies. Maybe he borrowed money from the girl. God, no, Kibum doesn't hope that. That his son has ended up with debt because he was too proud to ask for a little money from his parents. This is just getting worse and worse and the evening just started. The girl sends Kibum a sweet smile and it's only then that Kibum notices their fingers laced together. He looks up with a questioning glance.
"You remember Gwiboon, right?" Kibum blinks and Jonghyun sighs. "Dad, seriously?" Kibum wrecks his brain. He's supposed to remember the girl. If he wasn't, Jonghyun wouldn't have said it like that. He studies the girl intently when he finally recognizes her. She's the girl he brought home last year for his birthday! The brown-haired, sweet art-student. Except now she's blonde and she looks a lot more sophisticated than she did back then. Not that she didn't look sophisticated back then but the girl beside Jonghyun right now doesn't really resemble her past.
"Oh, yeah. I remember." He nods and he's not sure whether or not Jonghyun actually believes him. It doesn't matter, he decides. Then his worst case scenarios run through his head again and he swallows a lump. "Are you...?" Dammit, he can't even ask the question. This is so unlike him. Jonghyun raises an eyebrow in question.
"Together? Yeah. But dad, that's not the point." Kibum shakes his head. It's good to know that they're together but it wasn't what he intended to ask.
"No, I mean ..." He turns to the girl. "Are you pregnant?" Time stands still in the restaurant. Jonghyun's eyes widen comically and the girl seems taken aback. Time only starts again when she starts laughing and waves a hand with well-manicured nails.
"Oh God, no!" She can't stop her laughter and Kibum visibly relaxes. Jonghyun is blushing in embarrassment. He didn't plan on introducing his girlfriend and get that question. They're interrupted when the waiter brings their food.
While they eat, Kibum starts to question the girl. He wants all the gossip and Gwiboon happily delivers. Jonghyun sits silently beside the two and listens to their conversations until Kibum starts telling stories of him as a child.
"The first time Jonghyun went to the pool, we went all three of us together! He was so energetic and he was ready to swim all by himself. It turned out he didn't like being alone for 5 minutes, he was such a sensitive kid. That was the first time he called me 'dada'." Gwiboon coos at the story and Jonghyun digs into his food
