The night had never been quieter. The full moon glowed brilliantly, but nobody seemed to agree with nature’s happiness. Jaejoong wished that he could enjoy this rare sight, but duty calls. He had a mission to accomplish, and it must be done by tonight. If they were to wait any longer, a few lives might be in danger. He needed to focus.

He checked his watch every once in a while. It was almost time for his target to arrive at the scene. No, he didn’t invite his target here. He had only been spying on his target since he received the mission and noted on his target’s schedule pattern since then. And he knew that in any minute, his target should be walking along the side-walk across from where he was. Usually his target will have a friend with him, but not tonight. His target will be alone. There will be no witnesses, thus it will be easier for Jaejoong’s superior to hide the deed from the public. After all, his current target is a well-known public figure. He needed to be extremely discreet.

Jaejoong maintained his position behind one of the curtained windows of the shops. It was too dark for anyone to see him. Slowly and carefully, he unclasped the window’s lock and slid the frame upwards. He positioned his silenced revolver steadily through the gap and waited for the one man that has murdered so many. And so that man appeared only seconds later, looking troubled and in a hurry. Jaejoong counted to three and pressed the trigger, his expression never changed as he did so. The body fell limply to the ground. Almost immediately, a few men in blacks appeared out of nowhere and dragged the body away.

The deed was done. But Jaejoong wasn’t happy. He hated to kill. But some criminals just didn’t deserve a second chance. It was a necessary elimination.

As quietly as he sneaked into the shop, he left, leaving no evidence that someone had been in the shop at all.

“What were you doing all night last night?” Yunho asked during breakfast on the next day. “You look like you need more sleep.”

Jaejoong looked up from his food and sighed. “Since when did you learn to nag, Yunho? I’m a big boy. I can take care of myself.”

Yunho pursed his lips at that and continued on his meal without another word. He had this unreadable expression on his face, but Jaejoong didn’t think he needed to know the details. He assumed that it might be related to Yunho’s work at the office. He did seem a lot busier these past few weeks. Maybe there are some corporation issues, or a huge new project to think about. Whatever it is, Jaejoong didn’t think that money was the problem. They had too much of those at their disposal.

“I’m leaving town tonight. I have to meet a business partner in Japan. If anyone asks for me, tell them to leave a message,” Yunho explained as soon as he was finished with his food. He wiped his mouth with the napkin and stood up from the chair. “I’ll see you when I see you.”

Jaejoong waved his fork at Yunho’s direction to tell him that he understood, and resumed eating. He ignored the roaring sound of the engine, which told him that Yunho had left the premises. Jaejoong sighed again. He knew, that beneath Yunho’s cold tone that, there’s someone warm inside who really cared about his existence. Even if they were only adopted brothers, Yunho is all he had as a family. He knew that Yunho cared despite the tone that he used with Jaejoong every day.

Just as he was leaving the dining table to return to his room, his phone beeped. He checked his phone at it was an urgent message from his superior. He pursed his lips and threw the phone aside. He washed up and changed into a more appropriate suit, retrieved his phone and immediately left on his Ducati.

“You’re late,” was the greeting he received from the secretary when he arrived at the front of his boss’s office.

Jaejoong glared at the guy who looked too young to be working for such an influential person. The intensity managed to shut him up.

“Sir, Mr Kim is ready to see you now,” he half-mumbled into the intercom, feeling slightly embarrassed at Jaejoong who wouldn’t stop staring.

“Send him in.”

The boy nodded and ushered Jaejoong inside. He left as quickly as he came in, leaving Jaejoong . He knew they were about to discuss something that is highly confidential.

~~~
The next thing Jaejoong knew is that he’s being shoved into a plane, to be on his way to Japan. He was given a 48 hours mission to investigate about a massive drug-dealing operation that is about to take place between two of the most dangerous mafia groups of Korea and Japan at a hotel in Tokyo. He needed to find out exactly who are involved, and of course, every other tiny details that he could get his hands on.
As soon as the seat-belt sign was turned off, he unfastened it and brought his feet up. He was in the first class cabin, yet he didn’t care what other people think or how they were giving him looks. All that mattered is that he’s comfortable and could get a decent sleep before arriving. God, he had just finished a mission, but was sent to another in less than 12 hours. He’s starting to feel the serious lack of sleep.
*more than an hour later*
“Sir... Sir...” one of the stewardesses shook his body gently to wake him up. “We’re going to land soon. Please put on your--- AHH!”
Out of reflex, Jaejoong had grabbed onto her arm and twisted it backwards at an immense speed and did a head-lock. He opened his sleepy eyes wide in alert at the disturbance. It was only after a moment that he realised who he had attacked. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry!” He immediately released her and helped her get back on her feet. “I’m really sorry. I don’t usually do that to people. Are you okay?”
“It’s fine, sir. Please, fastened up your seat-belt and straighten your seat for landing,” she said kindly, holding her arm close to herself. A colleague came to her side and helped her leave the scene and out of sight.
Jaejoong sighed and pulled his beanie even lower. He hastily fastened his seat-belt and wore his shades to avoid the disturbing gazes from other passengers.
~~~

Ever since he was young, Jaejoong had always fancied police games. He loved the action and justice it coveys. He loved to investigate, and stop bad people from doing bad stuff to the world. He vowed to always protect everyone around him, be it family or a random tourist he met at the city. He’s a big fan of peace, but the case was a total opposite for his adoptive brother Yunho.

Jung Yunho had always been the spoiled rich kid since they first met and become brothers. If it wasn’t for the fact that the Jungs and the Kims had a very close relationship, Jung Yunho might not have accepted Jaejoong all that willingly. He had stirred enough trouble when in school, and Jaejoong always had to be there to defend his only brother so that the disciplinary board will give him a chance to improve. Often had Jaejoong asked for Yunho to stop getting involved with gangs and bullies while they were in high school, but Yunho was stubborn. It took Jaejoong everything to finally make Yunho promise to put all the bad things behind and start a new and clean life. Yunho is all he had as family, he didn’t want to lose him too.

But little did he know, the brother that he had put his trust into had long betrayed him.

After he arrived at Narita airport, he went straight to the hotel where the transaction is about to take place at. He spent the next few hours familiarising with the area. He needed identify each way in and out from the hotel, and secret hide-outs that he could use to spy on their conversations. The faster he gets this done and over with, the faster he can pack up and go home. He was glad that he wouldn’t have to kill anybody yet this time round.

When night came, he was ready. The meeting will be held at a private room three floors below from where he was staying at. An hour before the mafias were to arrive, Jaejoong left his room completely equipped with loaded guns, just in case.

“I’m sure we can come up with something worthwhile for both our parties, Jung,” he heard a hoarse voice coming through his earpiece. The room was huge. He had to use binoculars from where he sat to be able to see the faces. And the voices reached him through the nano-microphone he had installed earlier.

“You know how high my expectations are. If I’m not satisfied with the benefits, the deal is off and I want the installments back in cash with 150% interest. You’re lucky I’m considerate enough in this case.”

Jaejoong moved his binoculars to see the other person who he assumed to be Jung. The voice seemed awfully familiar somehow, but his appearance was totally different from who he thought it was. It couldn’t be Jung Yunho? Jaejoong rubbed his eyes in disbelief and returned to his binoculars.

“Don’t worry, Jung Yunho. I’m sure you’ll be more than satisfied this time.”

~~~
“Damn you, Shim Changmin! You did this on purpose. You knew who it was from the very beginning and you purposely handed this assignment to me, you bastard!”
Changmin scoffed. “Is that a way to speak to your superior, Jae? Don’t forget that your life is in our hands. Your childish rebels will only break you, so stop complaining.”
Jaejoong gritted his teeth. “You’re going to make me kill my own brother, right?”
There was a momentary silence. Both men caught each others’ eyes in an intense stare.
“I’d rather die,” Jaejoong announced finally and turned to leave.
“Then, let him kill you,” Changmin challenged. “Then Junsu can finish the deed for you. It must be done either way. He has become a great threat to this country.
Jaejoong gritted his teeth. It looks like he will have no other choice. He definitely wasn’t going to stand on the side lines and watch Yunho being killed by Junsu. He gripped onto the doorknob until his knuckles turned white before turning it and left the room, not forgetting to slam the door behind him.
“If the door breaks, you’ll be paying for it,” the secretary added as Jaejoong walked past his desk.
“Shut up.”
He needed to sort this out, fast.
~~~

Jaejoong swore to get all the truth from Yunho’s mouth that night. He didn’t care about proper greetings anymore and immediately released a solid punch to Yunho’s face when he found him pacing at the living room.

“YOU! You lied to me!!” Jaejoong shouted and threw a few more punches. “I trusted you with my life!”

“Yah!! What is wrong with you?” Yunho demanded. He nursed his bleeding lips and perhaps a broken jaw while eyeing Jaejoong with disbelief. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“Stop pretending, Yunho. I know what you’ve been up to,” Jaejoong declared bitterly. “I can’t believe that our most wanted man has been living right under my nose all these time. You really disappoint me, Yunho.”

“Jae, stop it. What are you talking about?”

“I work as a secret agent under the government, Yunho. That’s what I’m talking about. I eliminate any sort of threats to the country, and right now you’re at the top of the list. And guess what, I’ve recently received a pretty cool assignment, and that is to kill you.”

Yunho was speechless. “You’re kidding right?”

“Why did you do it, Yunho? You promised to leave it all behind,” Jaejoong continued, he sounded broken. “You’re leaving me with no choice, brother. I can’t save you this time.”

Yunho chuckled. “You’re blaming it on me now? Look at you! Why didn’t you tell me what you really worked as? You told me you’re an accounting manager. Now what the hell is that?”

Both of them shot equal disappointed looks at each other. Yunho was the first to move forward and caught Jaejoong’s collar tightly in his hands.

“You’re going to kill me now, huh? Go ahead and try, let’s see if it happens,” he scoffed and released Jaejoong harshly.

~~~
“Kill him or I will, Jaejoong,” Junsu advised him.
Jaejoong, Junsu, and a few more men have surrounded the abandoned building where another transaction is about to take place. Jaejoong has been elected as the leader for the mission. Everyone was waiting for his further instructions.
He looked into Junsu’s eyes momentarily, trying to find the reasons and courage again. He had tried to figure everything out, and he thought he had arrived at a decision.
“I'll take him,” Jaejoong assured. Junsu nodded. As Jaejoong’s right hand man, he made a hand signal to inform the rest of the team.
Jaejoong held his breath for a moment and steadied the grip on his revolver. He counted to three and kicked the door open. Everyone in the room gasped at the intrusion and quickly got into combat position. Junsu appeared beside him after a moment, both of the pointing their weapons straight at Yunho. Their men will take care of the rest of them.
“You kept your word, Jae,” Yunho greeted him with a false smile. He himself had a gun pointed at his brother, steady and unforgiving. “I don’t want to have to do this, Jae.”
“The decision has already been made.”
BANG!!
“Damn it!” Jaejoong screamed and grabbed onto his bleeding shoulders. Before he could catch who had did it, people had began shooting at their enemies. Everyone took cover including Yunho. Jaejoong grunted. He had wanted it to be private. It seems like it’s not going to happen. He would have to do it right here, in an open battle.
Jaejoong took cover and maintained his aim at Yunho.
“I’m really sorry, brother. This is the only way to make it more bearable for the both of us, after what we’ve been through,” Jaejoong whispered to himself.
He aimed his revolver at the boxes stacked across the room, where he last saw Yunho ran into. He waited patiently and gripped onto the wound tighter. The sting from the metal was killing him, but that’s not important at the moment. Gun shots were heard randomly and scream of pain echoed, one after another.
BANG!!
Jaejoong ducked and missed the bullet from hitting his forehead by mere inches. He cursed. It seemed like Yunho isn’t giving him any chances. If that man doesn’t value others’ lives as much as he does, maybe Yunho really didn’t deserve to live. After all, there were plenty of evidences surrounding the mafia leader, giving plenty of reasons for the government to kill him.
*Click*
Jaejoong froze.
He could feel the cold metal at the back of his head, threatening to take his life if he dared to move.
“You’ve become a liability to my life, Jae,” Yunho spoke calmly. “I have no more reason to keep you alive anymore.”
Jaejoong gulped. “How did you get here, you were there...”
“You’re forgetting who I am, Jae.”
“If you kill me, they will kill you, Yunho.”
“Same case here, Jae.”
Jaejoong dropped his revolver and put up his empty hand. He turned around slowly. He wanted to look into Yunho’s eyes when he speaks.
“Do it,” Jaejoong challenged. “Kill me and get it over with.” Maybe having them both killed is the best way.
Yunho chuckled and stared into Jaejoong’s eyes for a moment longer.
BANG!!!
Both men shut their eyes tight, but for a completely different reason. Junsu, who was only a few feet away from them, breathed heavily as he looked at the two figures in turns. He still had his gun aimed at Yunho, it’s tip emitting thin smoke. Jaejoong slowly open his eyes, dreading for what he might see.
“Jaejoong, I’m sorry,” Junsu whispered as they watched Yunho’s body turning limp and fell to the floor.
The truth didn’t quite sink into his mind yet. His eyes bulged and his sight slowly turned into a blur. His brother is finally dead, just as what the government wants. It was over.
“Jaejoong,” Junsu called out. “Get a grip. We need to get out of here now. Come on!”
“I’m not going to leave him here like this, Junsu,” Jaejoong reasoned. He was starting to feel the loss. “He was the only family I had. He had taken good care of me...”
“Stop reminiscing, soldier. We need to move!!” Junsu urged and pulled Jaejoong with him.
Jaejoong didn’t care. He pulled Yunho’s lifeless body and carried him away from the scene. He owed Yunho that much at least.
He dreaded the day of tomorrow, when the pain will hurt even more.
Jaejoong didn’t stop fighting for justice after that incident. But he had certainly quit taking assignments that needs killing. He used to be able to compose himself before pulling the trigger, but not after it had killed his only family left in the world. The sorrow haunted him every day since then...
