They were the perfect couple. Wherever they were, the light would follow. They had plans of marriage, a grand house and perhaps even a few children. Men envied him. Women envied her. Their love was as big as the sky. They were inseparable.

Until one disastrous day, during a school trip in Athens.

“Do you see that guy over there?” Ren followed the new girl’s gaze, and upon seeing who it was, she smiled.

“Of course. Who wouldn’t?”

“Isn’t he hot?!” Ren couldn’t help to flash a bigger smile.

“It’s quite obvious.” Ren’s friend let out a dreamy sigh.

“Can you believe that he doesn’t have a girlfriend?” Upon hearing those words, Ren’s smile disappeared.

“What are you talking about? He does have one.”

“Are you sure? I was just talking to him. And being that I’m a single girl looking for someone to mingle with during this trip, I did the logical thing and asked him if he had a girlfriend. He told me that he didn’t have one.” Ren’s grip on her cup tightened.

“I don’t know why he would say something like that seeing that his girlfriend is on this trip as well.”

“Really? Who?” Ren gave a jealous smile.

“Me.”

“Omo! I’m so sorry! It’s just that he said he didn’t have one and you know…”

“Oh, I don’t blame you at all. But if you’ll excuse me.” Ren stood up and walked over to Jay.

“Hey. What are you doing?” Jay looked up from his book and smiled at the one girl he knew would be his only love. It tore him apart knowing that despite how much he loved her, he had to let her go. There was just no way he was going to risk giving her heartache. If fate was feeling nice, maybe he could come back and tell her that she was his forever.

“I’m reading, what else?” Ren sat down next to him. Jay could sense that something was wrong with Ren and he knew what it was. He was ignorant in not seeing that she had just been with the new girl, and no doubt heard what Jay had told the new girl.

“What’s with the frown?” Ren looked at him, innocence written all over her face.

“Is there something that you wanted to tell me, Jay?”

[Jay? Where’s the oppa?]

“No. Why?” Ren heaved out a sigh.

“Then nothing. I am perfectly fine. I’ll see you later then. We’re still going out to karaoke, right?” Jay wrapped an arm around Ren’s waist and pulled her close to him.

“Of course. Anything for my wonderful Ren.” Ren giggled.

“I can never stay mad at you for long.” They shared a quick kiss before Ren returned to her hotel room to prepare for the tour.

“Jay why are you doing this?”

“Soon Hui, just help me out, okay? I won’t be able to watch her cry.”

“Do you know how guilty I felt lying to her about you not having a girlfriend and that I was thinking about hitting on you? You are right about her. She’s very innocent and I don’t know if I can continue to lie to her. I do like her too and I was hoping to become friends with her, but not this way.”

“Soon Hui, please! I’d rather leave her this way than to feel like a pitiful fool when she’s crying by my side.”

“Urgh! Fine. If I hadn’t known you so well, I would’ve walked away.”

“Thanks. You’re the best.” Jay hugged his childhood friend.

“What are you going to do about Dong Woon though? You know he’s going to come after you once he finds out what you did to Ren.”

“Then I’ll tell him then, but I can’t now because I know that he’s closer with Ren than he is with me and he’ll tell her.” Jay looked up and saw Dong Woon coming.

“And speak of the devil. Go. Thanks again. I’ll see you tonight.” Soon Hui waved good bye and left. Dong Woon’s gaze followed her as he approached Jay.

“Who was that?”

“A friend. Where are you off to?”

“Nowhere. I came to find you and was hoping we could hang out tonight.”

“Where?” Dong Woon pulled out fake IDs.

“Aigoo… you’re so immature. How many?”

“A few. Here. Give one to your friend that was here a moment ago.” “Why?”

“She’s cute.” Dong Woon winked and left. Jay couldn’t help but laugh. He turned around towards Dong Woon’s walking figure.

“Yah! What about Ren?!”

“Don’t worry! Knowing you two lovebirds, why would I forget about her! I miss my best friend too you know, since she’s always hanging out with you! So I made her one, but I’m going to give it to her myself!” Jay just smiled.

[Lovebirds… yes we are. I know you’ll take great care of her Dong Woon.] Jay looked at the two cards and laughed.

“I’m going to miss you, silly guy.” Jay went in search of Soon Hui.

Ren was packing up her items as the school trip was over tomorrow. As it was her first time out of the country, she knew she was going to make tonight special. How? She was going to give her first time to none other than her boyfriend of 4 years now. She smiled upon the idea. As she zipped her suitcase, there was a knock on her door. She went to open it and a card popped up in front of her face.

“Hope you don’t mind me ruining your plans tonight, Miss. But will you join me at the night club tonight? Your boyfriend is going, so I assume he was okay with they change of plans.” Ren laughed.

“Dong Woon, one day you’re going to get into serious trouble with these fakes. But I would love to join you guys tonight. It beats hanging out at the karaoke place.”

“Yah, why are you glowing today?” Ren couldn’t help but laugh.

“Am I? I hadn’t noticed. I guess it’s just because I’m extremely happy.” “Why?”

“I don’t know. I guess it’s because I’m in love.”

“Ah… what love can do. Well then, see you tonight, friend?”

“Yes. Bye.” After Dong Woon left, Ren closed the door and went back to her room.

[This is perfect! I am finally going to do some things that would’ve never crossed my mind back home.]

That night, the four friends, joined by others, were able to leave the sights of their teachers, lying to them that they were going to a karaoke place.

“Woo! We’re going to party hard tonight!”

“YEAH! Thanks to our wonderful man, Dong Woon.” Dong Woon laughed.

“Thank you! Thank you! But no drinking! We can’t go back to the hotel smelling like alcohol!”

“Fine by me! I’d like to be sober if I get laid by a foreign chick!” Everyone laughed.

“Who gave birth to these idiots.” Ren laughed at Soon Hui’s remark.

“I ask myself that question all the time, and yet here I am, best friends with one of them.” The group arrived at their destination. As soon as they got in, they let the wild animals out of them. Many of them flew to the dance floor, hoping to leave Athens with wonderful memories. Ren found Jay and hooked her arm through his.

“Shall we dance?” Jay forced a smile on, knowing that it was the night his plan had to go into effect.

“Yes. But let me get a drink of water first.”

“Araso. I’m going to go to the restroom first then. I’ll come find you.”

“Sounds good.” Jay held onto Ren’s hands and leaned down to kiss her. When it ended, Ren giggled.

“Yah, it’s not like I’m going anywhere far.”

“I know. I love you.” Ren pecked Jay on the lips.

“I love you too, but I really need to go use the restroom now.” After Ren disappeared, Jay joined Soon Hui at the drinking counter. He ordered a glass of water and gulped it down to calm his nerves.

“Ready?”

“Yes. Good bye… my love.” Out of the corner of her eyes, Soon Hui spotted Ren. She looked around and upon seeing where her boyfriend was, began to make her way towards them.

“Are you sure about this, Jay?”

“Yes.” They both took a deep breath before carrying out their act.

“So, this girl named Ren told me that you had a girlfriend. Can you believe that? She must have problems going on her head if she thinks that someone like you would date the likes of her.” Jay took Soon Hui’s hands in his and forced all his guilt away as he looked into her eyes, hoping to convince Ren that he was leaving her.

“She’s a stalker of mine. So how about a dance?”

SLAP!

Dong Woon turned upon hearing the sound. All he could see though was a shocked Soon Hui, Jay holding his cheek, and Ren running out the doors. He quickly went up to Jay.

“What happened?”

“It’s none of your business.” Jay pushed passed Dong Woon as he, too, left the club. Dong Woon looked towards Soon Hui.

“They broke up.”

“What were you doing here with Jay anyway?”

“As a good friend, I was only doing what he wished for. If it was up to me, I wouldn’t even be here.” Soon Hui was the next to leave.

“Ren…” Dong Woon dashed out the doors in search of Ren.

“Ren! Ren-ah!” Up ahead, he saw a slouching figure. He ran up to her and made her stop.

“What happened?! Why did you just leave like that?” Ren just walked into Doo Joon’s arms and hugged him. Confused, he hugged her back.

“Ren, tell me what happened.”

“I never thought he would do that to me… I thought he really loved me.”

“Ren…”

“He broke my heart! I… I… I hate him! I hate him! I hate him! I hate him! I never want to see his face again! A man like him shouldn’t exist!”

“Was… was Soon Hui involved in this?”

“Yes. I didn’t know she would do that to me either.”

“Ren… I’m so sorry about this…”

“I will never trust anyone! Ever!”

“Ren…”

“No one, but you…” With that, Ren fainted. Tears fell down as he watched the girl who was like his baby sister shatter from so much pain. He picked her up and began to walk to their hotel.

“I’m so sorry Ren… I love you so much…” Jay sat in the back of the taxi as they headed towards his hotel. He had just witnessed Ren’s pain and it tore his heart apart. He tried taking deep breaths to calm his heart, with hopes of returning to her side again. When he got to the hotel, everything was already set and ready to go. His teacher was standing next to his things.

“You’re dad is coming in a couple of minutes. I hope you the best of luck.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“We’ll be seeing you around next year right?”

“I hope so. Very much.” Jay pulled two letters and gave it to his teacher.

“I hope you will help me by giving these two letters to my good friends. I can’t leave knowing that I’m ending everything on a bad note. Thank you.” The teacher took the letters at the same moment, a car pulled up. Jay’s father stepped out.

“Are you ready?”

“Yes.”

“I’m so sorry you have to go through this. Your mom and I will be by your side every single second of it.”

“I know, dad.” With a final wave to his teacher, Jay got in the car. Jay’s father shook the teacher’s hand.

“I thank you so much for making this exception. I wanted to give him everything just in case…”

“Don’t mention it. Your son will be joining us again next year.”

“Yes, I pray every night that he will.” With a final bow, Jay’s father got in the car and drove off. At the same moment, Dong Woon walked up to the teacher.

“What was this all about? Why is Jay leaving early?” But all the teacher did was hold out the letters to Dong Woon.

“I hope you will respect his privacy by not opening that letter directed to Ren.” With that being said, the teacher went back inside.

After showering and calming down from his anger, Dong Woon eyed the letters that were addressed to him and Ren.

[You jerk. What could you possibly have to say that you couldn’t come say it to my face.] With anger seething throughout his body, Dong Woon tore the letter open.

My dear friend,

Thanks to you, I got to meet the most beautiful girl in the world. Probably the only girl I will ever love. I know you see her as your younger sister, and I’m sorry that I broke her heart. If I could tell you why, I would, but I’m afraid that you will pity me and thus, I will keep my secret. But know this, you were a good friend and I would never do something so stupid for no true reason. I hope that you trust my words and continue to look at me as your friend. Also, I hope that you know that I really do love Ren, with all my heart. And I nearly died when I decided that I had to leave her now, or else she would face the possibility of not having me for the rest of her life. More like me with the possibility of not seeing her ever again. I love you both dearly, and hope that fate is on my side so that I will be able to come see you both again. If not, then this is my good bye, friend. I know you’ll take good care of Ren. You always do.

* Jay

Silent tears fell from Dong Woon’s eyes. It was no wonder why he couldn’t get truly angry at Jay for making such a big mistake. Deep inside, he knew that Jay was leaving, and it could be forever. But he had pushed that feeling aside because he didn’t want to believe it. His nightmares were coming true. His two best friends were suffering. In his nightmares, one was dying and the other lost in complete loneliness. But he had to find out what was really going on, and he knew that there was only one person he could go to.

The following morning, everyone was ready to leave. Dong Woon was searching for Soon Hui and Ren. Upon seeing the teacher, he went up to her.

“Where is Ren?”

“She went home yesterday. She was feeling too sick.”

“What about Soon Hui?”

“Her family had come to Athens as well, so she is with them right now. Why?”

“No. Just curious.”

Weeks passed since the Athens trip. Doo Joon was on his tenth visit to Ren’s house, hoping she would open the door.

“I’m not seeing anyone right now Doo Joon. Come back tomorrow.”

“Yah, Ren. Stop being so stupid! I’m your friend and if you need the support, then I am here for you. But you can’t sit in there sulking the whole time! You’re going to get sick!”

“Does it matter?”

“Fine! Then I’ll just toss this letter that Jay left for you.”

“Wait!” The gate opened. When Dong Woon entered the house, he saw a very sickly looking Ren.

“Why are you so stupid sometimes?”

“I’m sorry. But you know why. Where’s the letter? It might help me to leave this house if I can find out why Jay left me.”

“Well, I have to meet up with someone, so here.” Dong Woon handed the letter towards Ren.

“Promise me you’ll get some fresh air, whether the news in the letter is bad or good. If you had let me in the day I returned from my trip, you would’ve been able to see that letter earlier.” Ren didn’t reply.

“I’m going. I’ll stop by again later.”

“Yes.” After Dong Woon left, Ren opened the letter that Jay left for her.

My beautiful princess,

I’m so sorry that I had to put you through so much pain. But it was for the best. If I told you my secret, then you would pity me and I wouldn’t want that. Because it would mean that I really am going to disappear from your life forever. There is nothing between me and Soon Hui. She’s my childhood friend, and what she did was upon my request. I hope you will forgive her. She truly is a good person. You know, you’re special right? You also know that I love you a lot, right? I love you so much, that my heart feels like it’s going to explode. I know you may have doubted me when I put you through so much pain, but I hope you will forgive me. I pray every night that I will be able to come back to you. But there is always the chance that I may not, and so I ask that you not wait for me. I love you as big as the sky. Good bye… my love.

* Jay

Ren’s tears flowed down like a river.

“You bad person.” Ren hugged herself as she tried to remain calm.

“I love you so much. And for you, I will not wait. But I won’t find another because my heart is already yours.”

“Heart failure?!”

“Yes. He used to have heart problems when he was child, but those pains went away. It was when he began to date Ren that they began to return. They started as light pains, but got heavier as time went by. If he even wants a shot at living, he has to get a heart transplant. But he was on the waiting list for quite some time. Just a month ago, he got a call saying that there

was a heart for him, but it was going to take awhile before it was in their possession. So they told him that he needed to take good care of his until the heart transplant got here, which meant that he could experience nothing that could bring pain upon his heart, and that meant no Ren. Two days before the Athens trip ended, I brought him the letter that said the heart was here and they were ready to perform the surgery whenever he was, thus leading to the reason as to why I was with you guys that night and you know the rest.”

“Where is he now? He is still alive, right?”

“I… I don’t know. An emergency came up during his operation and they had to transport him to Japan. I haven’t been able to contact his parents ever since then.”

“Will you keep trying and let me know when you do?”

“Yes. Are you going to involve Ren in this?”

“Of course. She has a right to know. Why?”

“No. I agree with you.” They both stood up and went their separate ways. That night, Dong Woon tried calling Ren, but she wasn’t answering.

“Now what are you doing?”

A few days passed, and still Dong Woon couldn’t contact Ren. Every time he went to her house, she wasn’t home.

“Where are you? I have important things to tell you.” At that moment Dong Woon’s phone rang.

“Hello?”

“My good friend, would you like to come hang out with me?”

“Yah! Where are you?! I’ve been trying to contact you!”

“Mianhe. I was getting some fresh air and letting everything settle in.”

“Where are you? I’ll come find you.”

“I’m right behind you.” Dong Woon turned around and jumped in shock upon seeing Ren there.

“Yah.” Ren laughed.

“You’re such a coward. Come on, let’s go eat. I’m hungry. I’ll treat.”

“No. I will. I have something to tell you anyway.”

“Really? Okay.” With a smile, Ren and Dong Woon cheerfully walked down the streets and talked about their past. They found a restaurant and ate there. After they finished their food, Dong Woon finally spoke about what he had wanted to tell Ren so badly.

“Heart failure… that poor guy…”

“And now you know why he didn’t want our pity. It would’ve made him feel guilty, and he may not have had the chance for that transplant.”

“So where is he now?”

“We… we don’t know.”

“We?”

“I found out from Soon Hui. The only thing she knew was that he was transported to Japan when an emergency occurred during his operation.” Ren wiped away her tears, trying not to cry.

“I think I should go home now.”

“Yes. I’ll walk you home. Then we can get together with Soon Hui and find where our good friend has gone to. If he… If he has left this world, then we need to go pay our respects.”

“Yes, but let’s not talk about it. I don’t want to face reality until I’m seeing it with my own eyes.” The two paid for their meal and left the restaurant. They arrived at Ren’s house in silence. They bid their good byes and Dong Woon left.

[Jay, where are you?] Ren laid in her bed, staring at the ceiling. She couldn’t stop thinking about Jay and his operation.

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you make yourself go through all of this alone?” Ren released a sigh and forced herself to go back to sleep.

Months had passed, and there was still no sign or news about Jay. Ren’s first year of college went by smoothly. Due to her hectic schedules, she had to put off searching for Jay, but with every second she could spare, she would go back to the memories of her Jay. She would pray every night that Jay would walk back into her life one day.

Ren walked out onto her balcony and looked at the star lit sky. She smiled as she closed her eyes. She clasped her hands together and raised them up to under her chin.

“Please, please let me see Jay tomorrow.” Ren slowly opened her eyes and slowly exhaled.

[I know you told me to not wait for you, but what can I do? I love you so much.] Ren walked back into her apartment and went to bed.

“I miss you.”

Ren sat in the middle of a garden, drawing out the beautiful, colorful plants. All around her, small families roamed and were enjoying the beautiful day out. Ren eyed her red rose and smiled. Drawing had always brought a calm over her.

A man walked up to the flower she had been drawing. He knelt down and smelt it. He smiled, stood back up and left. The whole time, Ren had frozen. Her eyes opened wide in shock and disbelief. She immediately stood up, knocking down her items. She dashed after the man.

“Yah! Kim Jay!”

Jay froze in his spot. He knew that voice. It was all he could hear every night. He slowly turned around, afraid that he was imagining everything.

He wasn’t. Right in front of him, stood the girl he told himself he would love forever. Tears fell as a smile came to his face.

“Ren…” Ren ran straight into his arms.

“You jerk! Why didn’t you tell me?!” Jay just chuckled. He had missed his love so much. Finally having her in his arms felt so good.

“Mianhe… I’m so sorry…” Tears were also coming from Ren’s eyes.

“But it doesn’t matter. You know I could never stay mad at you for long. It’s just good to know that you’re still here.” They continued to hug, afraid to let go, afraid that everything wasn’t real. Jay broke the hug, only to hold Ren’s face in his hands.

“I can’t believe this is happening.” He showered her with kisses.

“I missed you so much.” Ren giggled.

“I missed you a lot too.” Ren caught Jay’s face in her hands and kissed him fully on the lips.

“And I think I love you more than I did before you left.” Jay smiled and pulled her into a hug.

“This feels so nice.”

That night, Ren invited Dong Woon and Soon Hui to join her for dinner that night, excited to show them the biggest surprise of their lives. When they arrived, they spotted Ren alone at a table.

“Who is this special guy that you keep mentioning? You’re new boyfriend?” Ren smiled shyly as she could barely contain her excitement.

“I guess you could say so.”

“So, where is he?” At that moment, Ren looked up and saw her special guest.

“He just walked in. I hope you guys will be kind towards him as I really do like him. In fact, I love him.”

“Wow! That fast?” Ren waved her guest over to their table. Soon Hui and Dong Woon turned towards the new boyfriend. Both were immediately shocked to see who it was. Soon Hui stood up as tears fell from her eyes.

“Jay…” Jay smiled at his best friend as she went over to hug him.

“Why was it so hard to reach you after you left South Korea for your operation.”

“I’m sorry Soon Hui. But it was upon my request. I told my parents that I didn’t want to contact any of my friends until I was better. Mianhe.” Soon Hui just smiled.

“I forgive you. It’s good to have my best friend back, though probably not for long.” They both laughed as they ended the hug. Dong Woon immediately went up to Jay and hugged him.

“If you ever disappear on us again, you’re dead!” Jay laughed as he returned Dong Woon’s embrace.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be here for a long time.” The friends sat down at their table and enjoyed their night together.

When their meal ended, they bid each other good bye and went their separate ways. Jay walked Ren home in the silent night. They reached Ren’s apartment building and went up to her apartment. They reached her door in silence. Ren turned towards Jay.

“You know that night that we uh… broke up?” Jay frowned.

“I try not to, but yes, I remember.” Ren bit her lower lip as she looked up at Jay.

“I… I was going to ask you to stay in my room that night.” It only took Jay a few seconds to interpret the meaning behind Ren’s words. He chuckled.

“We should wait until we’re sure that we will be together forever.”

“No… I’m sure that you’re the one for me. I have never experienced so much pain in my life when we went our separate ways. And when I heard that you might’ve… might’ve died I knew that I could love no other because you had taken my heart with you. Jay… I don’t ever want to say goodbye again. So… will you… will you stay with me tonight?” Jay stared into Ren’s eyes and saw the innocence in them. He smiled and leaned down to kiss her.

“On one condition.”

“What?”

“Marry me.” Ren smiled and leaned towards Jay until her lips were only centimeters away.

“Gladly.” They passionately kissed each other as they pushed Ren’s door open and shut it behind them.

~ Finally, I will never have to say good bye, my love. ~
