⬻Chapter XXVIII: Confusion ⤖

My Mysterious Boss

┍━━━━ ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ━━━━┑

You slowly opened your eyes, rubbing them, before doing a little arm stretch, waking up your muscles.
Aish!
Before you could satisfiedly stretched out your arms, you remembered you were in Hajoon's car.
You looked outside, realizing that he had not dropped you off at the main road, but at your place.
Aish, I've done it again!
You facepalmed and sighed in disappointment.
Great! He's totally going to mock me about this too.

Hajoon had done too many things for you that you've lost count of it.
Wait?
You lifted your head and quickly scanned around the back of his car, realizing you were alone.
You squinted, as you looked across from the driver's side to see his silhouette.
You opened the door and walked around the car to get a better glimpse.

Are they getting along?
You thought, as you slowly walked towards them.
Wait, is Eunwoo lecturing him?
You were lowkey worried that Eunwoo was, since Eunwoo wasn't very fond of Hajoon.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••
"What are you two doing?" You asked in a whisper, peeking behind Hajoon.
Eunwoo jumped from your unexpected appearance.
"Y-YAH!" Eunwoo exclaimed, holding onto his chest.
Your hair was no longer in a neat bun, instead a few strands of your hair flowed down the side of your face; the neat bun had turned into a bird's nest.
The mascara and eyeliner had smeared around your eyes from the rubbing.
On the other hand, Hajoon didn't react the same way as Eunwoo.
Maybe it was because he had the warning from Eunwoo's startled look.
He looked down over his shoulder at you, who had a smile on.

You looked up from your position to see him staring back at you.
Th-thump. Th-thump. Th-thump.
You were feeling it again, as you smile slowly faded, and time seemed to stop for a second which felt like forever.
You were listening to the sound of your heartbeat and his calmed eyes.
You quickly broke away from his gaze and straightened yourself, before walking over to Eunwoo's side.
You grabbed onto Eunwoo's arm.
"I'm sorry!" you laughed.

Hajoon has never seen you so giggly before.

Eunwoo sighed from annoyance, before giving a stern look to Hajoon.
"Thank you for bringing her home," Eunwoo thanked.
As much as you didn't want to look at Hajoon, as you were scared those tingles may come back, you had to thank him.
"Thank you for dropping me off, Mr. Hajoon-shi!" You thanked, followed by a small bow and a slight smile.
Hajoon gave you a nod in acknowledgement.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

You and Eunwoo watched Hajoon's car disappear into the main road.
"Why were you with him?" Eunwoo asked.
Deep in his heart, Eunwoo was upset that Hajoon had dropped you off.
"I'm sorry. He was the only one back at the company, so I had asked him for a lift," you half lied, releasing his arm.
Truth was Hajoon didn't have to send you back. The deal was to drop you off at the main road, and you'd catch a cab.
"Next time, just call me and I'll pick you up," Eunwoo suggested.
You nodded to his request, though your mind was still on him.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

Eunwoo helped the ahjumma roll her food cart up the street.
His mind was somewhere else. He was thinking about the conversation he had was Hajoon a few nights ago.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

"Why are you looking into ---------?" Hajoon asked.

Eunwoo stopped, feeling a little worried that his identity was going to be exposed; exposed to you.
Cold sweats formed behind his back.

Eunwoo swallowed his saliva and walked back to face Hajoon.
"What did you say?" Eunwoo pretended to not hear what Hajoon had just asked.
"I don't think I have to repeat anything," Hajoon looked at Eunwoo.
Eunwoo knew that one slipped-up could ruin everything: his mission and his relationship...with you.
"What do you know about it?" Eunwoo asked, curious to listen to what Hajoon had to say.
He was lowkey intimidated by Hajoon's cold stare.
"I know as much as you're looking into her," Hajoon bluntly replied, inserting his hand in his pocket.
Eunwoo thought of who could have told Hajoon about it. He began eliminating each of his sources.
"You may be ------'s boss, but you're not my boss."
Hajoon scoffed.
"I'm sure ------ will be upset when she finds out that her best friend is
looking into her behind her back," Hajoon stated, taking a sigh after.
That's right.
Eunwoo thought.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••
"What are you thinking about, Eunwoo?"
Eunwoo broke out of his thoughts and looked at the ahjumma.
"Excuse me?"
"What are you thinking about? You look stressed."
"It's nothing," Eunwoo chuckled.
"Thank you for helping me!" The ahjumma smiled.
Eunwoo pulled the cart into the ahjumma's shop before taking his leave.
Who could have told him? I need to be more cautious.
Eunwoo thought.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

"Have you found the person who could have leaked the mission?" Eunwoo asked on a call, looking out to the lake.
A second passed.
"Please make sure you find the person."
Another second passed.
"I don't want the mission to be compromised. I feel like we're really close to what we're looking for."
A few seconds passed.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure the mission runs smoothly from now on. Just do you par---."

"Eunwoo-ah!" You called his name as you attempted to scare him by grabbing his shoulders and peeking to his side.
You took a few steps back, realizing he was on a call.
"I'm so sorry," you mouthed the words to Eunwoo, as he looked over his shoulder.
Eunwoo lowkey panicked, concerned that you heard his conversation.
"I will call you later," Eunwoo said, before ending the call.

Eunwoo chuckled, turning back to look at you.
"That didn't scare me one bit."
"I did get you the other night though!" you stated, pointing your finger as him, playfully.
Eunwoo thought for a second.
"Well, that was only because of the hair."
"Okay, I'll give you that," you laughed.

"I hope that wasn't an important call," you said.
Eunwoo's jolly expression quickly turned into an anxious one.
"You didn't hear anything, right?"
You shook your head.
"Did you need something?"
"You forgot about our ice cream deal?" You questioned.
"Ahhh!" Eunwoo expressed," Of course, I didn't. Is it today?"
You nodded your head, as a smile displayed on your face.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••
"One rolled-up strawberry and one rolled-up butter pecan," you ordered.
You walked back and stood next to Eunwoo.
You looked over at him, crossing your arms.
You noticed that he looked stressed and bothered.
"Are you okay?"
Eunwoo looked at you, breaking out of his thoughts.
"Yea, why?" Eunwoo asked.
"You're usually very happy. Today, you look gloomy. Is something bothering you?"
He hated that his stress was expressing physically and emotionally.
He knew that the mission would come with danger and risks.
The talk with Hajoon made him a little scared, to know that someone was onto him.
"I'm okay," Eunwoo smiled, hoping that it would assure you.
"One strawberry and butter pecan!"
You looked over your shoulder when the vendor called out your order.
"I'll be back!" You told Eunwoo, and he nodded.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

You and Eunwoo sat at a wooden bench that overlooked a greenery family park.
You've imagined the day you'd start a family with a handsome husband who'd loved you,
when you two would grow old and watch your children have kids of their own.
You smiled to the thought of it.
Only in a dream though, but you'd keep dreaming.

You looked over at Eunwoo, breaking out of your unrealistic imagination.
"Are you really okay?" you asked, as he took a scoop of his dessert.
I'm not.
Eunwoo mentally said.
"Yea, why wouldn't I?" Eunwoo lied.
"I mean, you can trust me, okay? If you ever need to talk, I'm here for you," you started,
"If you're lying to me, then please know that everything will be okay. You will be okay," you patted him
on the back, hoping that it would give him some support.
"Thank you, ------," Eunwoo smiled.
You guys ate your ice cream in silence for a few minutes, taking in the beauty of the soft, green
grasses, the baby blue sky and white, fluffy clouds that past above your head.

"Eunwoo-ah."
"Yea?"
"What did my boss say to you the other night?" you looked over at Eunwoo, who seemed uneasy with your question.
"Hajoon, right?" Eunwoo informally addressed.
"Ah, yes. It looked like you two were talking to each other before I jumped in," you began, "what did you guys talk about?"
You were curious.
Eunwoo took a few seconds, choosing each word carefully.
He felt like he was betraying you, as what Hajoon had mentioned that night.
"Um, just some guy talks, that's all," Eunwoo vaguely explained.
"How close are you with your boss?" Eunwoo asked, setting his ice cream cup down on the bench.
"We're okay," you partially lied. You and Hajoon were working together. You guys were partners, after all.
"Don't get too close with him. Be careful when you're around him, okay?"
You nodded to his warnings and requests.
"Don't worry, Eunwoo. He's my boss, and that's all," you told him, reassuring nothing's going to happen between
you and Hajoon besides the "employer and employee" status.
"Promise?"
A promise was a promise; an agreement that you couldn't take back.
You looked over at Eunwoo again.
His soft eyes were enough for you to say yes to it.
"I......," you hesitated, "promise," ending it with a smile.
"Thank you,------!" Eunwoo smiled.
You looked back at the calming view, feeling guilty.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••
You got off the bus and walked the same path to get to your workplace.
Will Hajoon be at work? Should I ask him what he spoke about with Eunwoo?
You sighed.
He probably won't even sho---.
"
OUCH!"
You yelled out in pain.
You looked at your stockings and realized it was that twig, the twig that you hated so much.
You've lost count to how many stockings become a victim to that twig.
"Y-yah!"
You looked at how badly the stocking ripped.
Ssi-baal!
"I'm going to have to city cut you down for real this time!" You yelled at the twig.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

You ran into the building and quickly put your bag into the locker, running back to the front, ready to greet Hajoon.
To your surprise, Hajoon did show up today.
Th-thump. Th-thump. Th-thump.
Your heartbeat could be heard through your ears.
Even if you couldn't face him, the sound of his footsteps was enough to make you nervous.
It wasn't like the first-time though.
This time, it felt ...weird...special...unexplainable.

You watched Hajoon enter the elevator, before the doors closed.
"Yah," Haein said, gently slapping your arm to get your attention.
You broke away from the elevators and looked at Haein, confused.
"Yea?"
"I saw your eyes," Haein teased, raising one of her brows playfully, smiling from ear-to-ear.
"N-no," you stuttered, pulling the strands of hair behind your ears, embarrassed that Haein caught that.
"What do you mean? I was looking at you the whole time," Haein teased more.
"It's nothing. Let's get to work before, Ms. Kim lecture us," you said, pushing Haein to the front desk.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••
Aish, what did Eunwoo and Hajoon really talk about that night?
You thought, tapping your pen on the desk.
Work? The company? The neighbors?
You guessed, putting out all the options there was.
Me?
You laughed aloud at your dumb and humorous jokes, startling Haein.
Haein held onto her chest and gave you a startled look.
"YAH!"
You broke out of your thoughts and looked at her, puzzled.
"You scared the sh*t out of me!"
"What did I do?
"Don't just laugh out of nowhere. What's wrong with you?"
Haein asked, taking deep breaths to calm her heart rate.
"Are you okay? You've been acting very weird lately," Haein asked out of concern.
"I'm totally fine," you said, laughing, thinking back to what you thought.
"If you aren't, let me know and we'll find you a mental institution," Haein joked.
"---------, before I forget, I'm going to lunch with Jeongmin later. I'm sorry," Haein said, apologetically.
"No, it's okay! Don't worry about it. I'll enjoy nature alone later."
"You're welcome," Haein chuckled.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

You sat down, taking in the view.
You took out your sandwich and began munching on it.
Your eyes were looking at the view, but your mind was still wondering about what Hajoon and Eunwoo spoke that night.
Is Eunwoo warning me because of something Hajoon said?
A wave of uneasiness overcame you.
I don't think Hajoon would say anything though.
You thought.
Would he?
You began to doubt your relationship with Hajoon.

"Is this seat taken?"
You were too deep in your thoughts; you didn't notice that there was a person standing in front of you.
You looked up.

"O-oh!" You scrambled to get out of your seat and bowed to Hajoon.
"No, it's not taken."
Hajoon set his lunch bag on the table.
"Mr. Hajoon-shi," you began.
Hajoon looked up at you, as he stopped taking out his lunch from the bag.
"You...You eat lunch?" you asked.
It was a dumb question to ask, but you really had no clue he actually ate lunch at the company.
He was usually in his office, out of the office, or never showed up.
"What kind of question is that?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.
Out of all the questions you've asked him, he's never been so stunned to such question.
"It's a good question," you played it off, "I'm just surprised that the chairman even eats lunch."
You took a bite of your sandwich.
Hajoon sat there for a few seconds, processing what you said, before he continued unpacking his lunch.
You took a quick glance and saw that Hajoon had quite a lunch.
In his glass containers, there was the most expensive cut of steak, the creamiest mashed potatoes,
the charred and glazed, roasted veggies with a side of creamy mushroom soup.

You knew that it wasn't Korean.
You assumed that he missed home.
You had packed only a sandwich and yogurt drink.
Lowkey, you were a little embarrassed, but who cares.
You were thankful enough to even have lunch.

You avoided eye contact with him the whole time, focusing only on your sandwich.
You wanted to finish lunch quick, so you could avoid feeling that feeling when you were around him.
You looked up when you heard the sound of something moved across the table.
You looked at him.
"I need you to do your job properly," Hajoon said.
Th-thump. Th-thump. Th-thump.
He needed to stop what he was doing.
You looked at what Hajoon slid to you.
It was a bento box.

You didn't know how to react.
Am I supposed to thank him? What do I say?
Your mind was blank.

You wanted to look strong, confident, and smart in front of him.
You cleared your throat when you finally got a hold of yourself.

"What is this?" You asked.
"A sandwich won't fill you up," Hajoon said, taking small bites from his lunch.
"Thank you for your kind gesture, but I will have to decline it," you told him, sliding the bento box back to him, only for him push it back to you.
"Eat it," Hajoon said, giving you one of his sterned looks.
You haven't seen one of those looks in a long time from him.
"Okay, if you insisted. Don't say that I didn't decline it," you told him.

You opened the box and smiled seeing the rice shaped into a cute-bellied bear, with
a few pieces of fried, golden rolled-up eggs, a crispy pork cutlet, a small side of greens and cherry tomatoes.

Hajoon's sterned look slowly faded into a soft and warm stare when he saw your reaction.
Stop! What's wrong with me?
Hajoon asked, when he caught himself doing it again.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

My payment!
You recalled.
"Mr. Hajoon-shi," you called him, setting down the chopsticks.
Hajoon looked at you.
You held your hand out towards him and looked at him dead in the eyes.
"My payment," you kept your statement short and clear.
Hajoon thought for a second.
"Oh!" He said as he caught onto what you were saying.
"You want cash? Check? Direct deposit?" Hajoon asked, listing out all the options.
"Whatever works best for you," you replied, giving him a smile.
As long as you were getting paid, that was all that mattered to you.
"What's your bank account number?" Hajoon asked, pulling out his phone.
"Oh that, I can't recall my numbers," you said.
Hajoon looked at you.
"You don't know your bank account number?" He questioned.
"I had to change my bank number because I lost my bag at the junkyard while running away---"

You caught yourself.
"Take this as a warning. Next time, I won't spare your life."
The man's words still haunted you.

Hajoon waited for you to finish your sentence.
You looked at him with an anxious look.
"I mean, I misplaced it somewhere, so I had to change accounts. I'll give it to you after lunch."
Hajoon knew exactly where the story was going, but he wanted to hear it from you.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

"Thank you for bringing an extra lunch for me," you thanked, feeling a little shy.
Hajoon didn't say anything. He acknowledged your sincere thanks by putting his utensils back in his bag.
"I'll return your lunch box after I've cleaned it," you told him.
Hajoon just nodded, and then he stood up to leave. You quickly got out of your seat, bowing to him.

You lifted your head and saw him staring at you.
You were a little confused because he didn't say anything nor did he walk away.
"Um...did you want me to walk you inside the building?" You asked.
He extended his arm out to you, holding a black piece of cloth.
You analyzed the article.
"Did you want me to wash this?" you asked.
Hajoon grabbed your wrist.
Your eyes widened at his sudden touch.
You didn't know how to describe it.
I guess you can describe the feeling as the cliche goes; it felt like an electric shock throughout your body.
You froze, staring at his hand that held your wrist.

You held onto the soft, cotton piece of cloth and gave him a confused look.
Who does he think he is?
You thought, breaking out of your delusional state.
"Mr. Hajoon-shi, you haven't discussed about this other job with me yet. I haven't agreed to being your personal laundrom----"
Before you could continue talking about what you thought Hajoon was asking you to do, Hajoon interrupted.
"Cover your leg," Hajoon said, before walking away.
Your eyes widened in embarrassment and realization as you looked down at the torn cloth that, that sharp twig caused.
You facepalmed.
Why does it always have to be that way when he's around?
You questioned.
Your luck was never good around Hajoon.

Though, you smiled, looking at his sweater, then you thought about his good intentions.
You looked at him as he walked closer to the building.
You tied his sweater around your waist, thinking about how much he's done for you.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

You sat on the bench at the end of the street, waiting for Eunwoo.
You glanced left and right down the street, hoping that Eunwoo show up.

You had stopped at his place after work to see if he would be free to come over for dinner.
Instead, the ahjusshi who lived next door had told you that Eunwoo had an important matter to attend to.

You looked at your phone, reading the time.
It was getting late, but there was no sign of Eunwoo.
Should I call him?
You thought.
Maybe not. He might be busy.

You got up and began walking back to your place.
You sighed, feeling a little upset that Eunwoo wasn't back yet.
It meant that you would be having dinner alone.
You stopped and thought about the times Eunwoo had waited for you.
Let's go back.
You told yourself.
•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

The street lights were finally on, guiding you down the empty road.
You slowly walked back, counting each step you took.
Before you made it back to the bench, a limo parked at the end of the street.
You quicky hid behind one of the food carts, bending down.
Is it Mrs. Lee? Does she know that I know about their secret meetings?
You thought.
You felt those chills and shivers. Your heart began beating faster.
Are they here to take me?
You panicked.
You looked around, praying that Eunwoo would come right now.
No, I need to be brave. It could be important.

You built all the courage inside of you, taking a few deep breaths.
You peeked your head to the side of the cart and looked carefully, planting your feet on the ground.

You looked closely at the limo, trying to memorize the brand, the color, everything
about the vehicle. You knew this was something to tell your partner about.
Wait, I should record this! This will be good evidence!
You thought.
You took your phone out and opened the video recording app, pressing the record button on the pad.
You angled your phone to get the best view of the street and the vehicle.

•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

After a few minutes, the passenger got out from his side and opened the backside door.
You peeked out a little more, squinting your eyes to get a better look.
The passenger and another man stood to the side and bowed at the person as he stepped out from the back.

Your heart dropped. Your eyes widened.
You quickly hid back behind the cart, sitting on the soiled ground.
You couldn't accept what you saw.
Your arm weakly dropped to the side with your phone still in your hand.
No, no, no!
You denied.

Chapter 40: Ah, so that's how those two take care of that ending from the previous chapter? But what did she mean by she didn't want him to blurt it out like that to Eunwoo? I couldn't recall which incident she was referring to. Other than that, Ha Joon getting jealous of her having lunch with Soo Hyuk and then taking up on his offer to drive her home and also, when he thought she was dating Eunwoo. But did he offer to take her home and she rejected him? He was kinda salty when he said something along the line of 'you take up his offer but reject mine?'. And once again what's with this chapter's ending as well? It's illegal to leave us on a note like that. Now what's that bracelet and how does he recognise it? And what did Ha Joon do this time? Surely she can't be his ex and all, unless she was abroad as well. Nonetheless, I can't wait to read more. Will be eagerly waiting for the next update ^^

Chapter 39: Ooh... You didn't bring the twist I was expecting from the ending of the previous chapter. And talking about endings, what is even Ha Joon thinking confronting Eunwoo like that here? How is he gonna justify his reason for knowing that? Regardless, I had fun reading this chapter. Those two showing attitude to each other, then caring about each other secretly... I can't wait to read more. Will be eagerly waiting for the next update ^^

Chapter 38: I'm not gonna get fooled by your ending. I'm sure he's gonna something along the line, who will spy for him and he's in need of a trustworthy partner or so. LoL... But that's a pretty good ending for the chapter. I'll give you that. You almost got me. Anyway, those two were really good this whole chapter. Like her, I'm gonna miss those two being on holiday. Since they can't be this free back home with their job hierarchy. Also, I cracked up hard when she retorted 'In this hotel room?' to his ' I'm your boss' comment XD can't wait to read more. Will be waiting for the next update ^^

Chapter 37: Their vacation is getting over? So soon? Noooooo... I mean it was fun seeing them flirt and spend time together without their status or something holding them back. It was sweet and a bit funny how they ordered food for each other and then acted like they can eat all that by themselves. And will they be having a double date somewhere later in the story with Minhyuk and his girlfriend? Also, that ending though! How are they both gonna escape the guys who have come in search of him? Can't wait to read more. Will be eagerly waiting for the next update ^^

Chapter 36: So Eunwoo hasn't found the box yet, right? I mean since he got interrupted by Haein while searching for it. Also, wonder why Ha Joon is keeping an eye on her as well... And definitely enjoyed reading those two's interaction in the island. I laughed out loud when she asked him if older women was his type and was going to introduce her friend to him. Oh, I totally forgot about her admitting her feelings for him, even though it was just to herself. Now when's Ha Joon gonna realise his own? Also, she gotta stop following people blindly especially when it involves secluded place and warehouses. When is she gonna learn her lesson? Anyway, thanks for the longer update. can't wait to read more. Will be eagerly waiting for the next update ^^

PS New Year wishes to you as well. Wish you the best!

Chapter 35: That ending though! I mean will Ha Joon recognise whose voice it is? And does she have notes on Eunwoo too on that board? I don't seem to remember... Regardless, this chapter was a fun read, especially the interactions between her and Ha Joon. And I'm still wondering about this Minhyuk guy. LoL... Anyway, can't wait to read more. Hope to see an update soon ^^

Chapter 34: LoL... You definitely got us in the last chapter! I still can't believe it wasn't the same black box that he was looking for. Wah, you fooled me completely! Anyway, coming to the chapter, I didn't know such a hotel existed in Jeju. Not that I know of all the hotels there. Nonetheless, I wasn't expecting a hotel with the name 'Ramada' in Korea but now I know, thanks to you and Google. LoL.. also, can't believe Ha Joon really killed someone in this chapter. Not sure why that came as a shock to me though. Also, that nice guy named Minhyuk, is he one of your OCs or is he one of those idols with the real name Minhyuk? I'm really curious. Also, his mother doesn't know about his girlfriend yet or is she not accepting that girlfriend for her son? And what was Ha Joon doing in Jeju though? I'm curious of that too. And the guy at the end, is it Minhyuk again? Or is he someone's else entirely? Anyway, can't wait to read more. Will be eagerly waiting for the next update ^^

Chapter 33: So Eunwoo now thinks she likes him? Also, Ha Joon and her had an indirect date? Those two were too cute, especially trying to deny their feelings. And she gave him the black box? That came as a surprise. Anyway, can't wait to read more. Hope to see an update soon ^^

Chapter 32: At the beginning of the chapter, I was mildly confused if the order of the chapter was wrong but soon realised it was Ha Joon's perspective. Somehow, the mention of an Italian brand and all those ominous reactions and warnings from people make me wonder if it has anything to do with the Italian mafia. Also, her being conflicted with her feelings and her fear, how are things gonna resolve in that department? Also, Jung Hae In here is the actor Hae In, isn't it? Just curious... Anyway, can't wait to read more. Will be eagerly waiting for the next update ^^

Chapter 31: Asdfghjjklkj!! He brought her lunch, didn't he? Ayyo, now he's gonna think she went on a date with Soohyuk. And talking about him, I wonder what the repercussions gonna be for hanging out with him. I mean like she said, his mom is definitely not gonna leave this alone. Also, I'm starting to feel sorry for Eunwoo. Just hope that he was genuinely caring about her till now and not just acting so. Anyway, can't wait to read more. Hope to see an update soon ^^
