The mermaid woke to the sound of clinking glass beside her head. Opening her eyes, she saw her doctor shaking something in a blue vile before setting it down on the table, "Awake?"
"No thanks to you." Taura rose, scratching her head while the merman chuckled. She watched as he pulled out his stethoscope again and placed the ends into his ears before turning to her.
"Apologies, your highness, but Talya gave me something that might help alleviate some of the pain and I told her I wouldn't give it to you unless you woke up on your own. I'm not one for disrupting a patients rest."
Talya straightened up as the doctor listened to her breathing. After each breath, Taura eyed the merman carefully, "Really?"
"Really. Deep breaths, please."
Dramatically taking in a breath and releasing it, watching as some bubbles erupted from her lips, "Why wouldn't she give it to me earlier, if it would help me?"
"I told her not to mention it." The doctor took off the stethoscope and went to his bag again to put it away. Taura bit her lip as she clenched her makeshift bed.
"I thought you were on my side, doc."
"I am, princess. The potion Talya wants to give you is a numbing serum. Yes, it will take away the pain but only for so long and not just that, it also completely numbs your body. You won't be able to feel anything and that can be a danger too. Taura believe me, if I thought this would be a good idea I would have given it to you the first time I saw you but my worry is that you will grow addicted to it."
He swam to the mermaid, touching her shoulder, "Nothing is more tempting than wanting to avoid the pain."
Taura bowed her head, with a smile. She let out a breathy laugh as she continued to shake her head, "You can say that again."
When Taura looked up, the blue bottle floated in front of her face before landing in her palms that she had out to grab it. The doctor stared it with arms crossed, "I tried to dilute the potion so that it the effects of it wouldn't be so severe. Taking it is up to you, princess."
"Why wouldn't I want to take it again?" Taura weighed the small container, watching the liquid inside of it swish around. She glanced up at the merman who shrugged.
"It's better to feel something, rather than nothing even if all you feel is pain," He sighed shakily, uncrossing his arms, "Only those that are dead, feel nothing."
"It's a good thing I'm on my way then," the mermaid mumbled to herself before uncapping the bottle and placing the opening her lips to down the thick liquid.
Taking the last drop, Taura took in a breath as the doctor took the bottle from her. Taura waited. Wanting the pain to slowly dissolve into nothing which it did from her fin up. She began to laugh gleefully as the pain went away. "It's gone, the pain! I don't feel anything anymore."
The doctor nodded absentmindedly as he watched the princess swim freely around the room, something she couldn't do the day before without cringing or screaming. He wanted to be happy for her but he couldn't bring himself to fully feel anything beside worry.
