Chapter 25

The Arranged Marriage.
I woke up feeling somewhat like a zombie. My messed up sleeping schedule did not include waking up at nine every morning so ı could attend some stupid lecture. However ı somehow managed to drag my sleepy arse out of bed and got ready whilst still being half asleep. I wasn't even bothering to make an effort because firstly, ı'd look like a mess no matter how hard ı tried in this condition, and secondly there was no way ı was handling make up or a styling tool near my face when ı couldn't even walk in a straight line. I dressed in a casual vans t-shirt, paired with some black skinny jeans and of course my doc martins. I hoped ı had put on my t-shirt the right way around, but when ı was this tired ı didn't even bother to check. I was still mad at Sehun. If there was an Olympic game for being stubborn and holding a grudge ı would win gold every time. Thankfully ı won't have to see his annoying face this morning, ı thought happily as ı walked into the empty kitchen and poured myself a glass of orange juice. I munched slowly on my cereal bar whilst playing Tetris on my phone. I had ten minutes to kill before the driver got here. Suddenly a door slammed shut followed by slow, lazy footfalls. I looked up to see a pale faced Sehun walk into the kitchen. He seemed to be ignoring me as he walked straight past me without speaking a word. Either that or he couldn't see me. The latter seemed less likely. I watched him as he reached inside the fridge and randomly pulled out a cucumber. Confusion swept my mind, accompanied by slight amusement as ı watched Sehun sit at the kitchen island. He tried to tackle the thin wrapping along the cucumber but couldn't get it open. After ten seconds he gave up and instead used the fruit as a head rest, his eyes that were barely open in the first place closing fully. I couldn't help the involuntary smile that spread across my face as ı watched him. "Sehun" ı whispered, wondering if he was really ignoring me or sleeping again. He didn't reply. His body was shaking slightly, as if he was shivering despite the satisfying heating in the apartment. Cautiously, as if ı expected him to leap at me, ı approached Sehun and examined his face. His skin seemed shallow and so pale it was almost green. A thin sheet of sweat shone upon his skin and his breathing was audible. He sounded like an old man, or as if his lungs were fighting for air as he breathed in a raspy, weak manner. He definitely looked ill. I bit my lip as ı wondered what to do. As much as ı'd love to pretend his existence wasn't real so ı could go on with my day happily, ı did actually have a conscience and would feel bad for leaving an ill person. "Sehun" ı whispered, shaking his shoulder. He didn't reply. I tried a couple more times, setting my limit for five. When the fifth try had failed and Sehun was still deep in his sleep and illness, ı figured it wouldn't be morally bad to leave him there and proceed with my own life. Giving an uncertain glance towards the kitchen where Sehun sat ı finally slipped on a leather jacket and my Doc Martins before grabbing my back pack and shutting the door closed. Down in the underground car park the driver already had the engine going. "Is the young master not accompanying us this morning?" driver-nim asked, opening the door for me. The driver seemed like a nice person. He had friendly eyes and dimples in his cheeks. He sort of reminded me of my uncle, who currently lived abroad in China and owned a large manufacturing company. I shook my head in reply. The driver simply nodded his own and shut the door softly behind me. The thought occurred to me on the way to school that ı had been enrolled on the course for three days, and yet today was only my second day of attending all of my classes. For some reason that amused me. It wasn't like ı would be missing a lot, or that ı particularly cared. I only picked the languages course because ı was good at it, and ı was only going to university because ı needed something to do. It wasn't as if ı was going to use it to get a job because ı didn't need to. Even if my parents fashion empire went bankrupt- ı scoffed because like that will ever happen -my family's wealth would be enough to support us, my children and probably their kids without us getting a job. School was just like watching TV, so there was no point in me really getting stressed out about missing my classes or not completing the course work. We arrived at the entrance gates for the campus driveway. I sighed and waited for the driver to open my door before stepping outside and slipping on my bag. I took my time walking to class. It wasn't as if ı would be missing anything important. Then suddenly a pair of hands covered my eyes. I stopped in my tracks and instantly tried to pull away the warm hands, but they wouldn't budge. "Yah, who is it?" I asked, trying to turn around. I felt someone laugh and attempted to feel behind me but that failed. "Seriously, who are you? Move your hands" ı demanded, shaking my head as ı stared at the darkness of my eyelids. I kicked the person's shin and they let out a painful yelp. "Yah Jong In, do you want to die?" I said as ı pulled away his hands to see a smiling Kai who was rubbing his shin in pain. He smiled, flashing his perfect teeth and laughed. "Yah, since when did you get so violent?" Kai asked, pouting. I stuck out my tongue at him and stalked away. He easily fell into step besides me. Kai let out a long sigh, his breath forming a large cloud in front of him. "It's so sunny today" he commented, looking up at the pale blue sky. I frowned at it. "So sunny, and yet so cold" ı complained. Kai laughed and swung his arm around my shoulder, ruffling my hair. "Yah, Ji Yoon-ah, does it make sense that you haven't changed one bit? There's nothing wrong with the cold" he said, laughing. For some reason my heart rate speed up and ı could feel my cheeks getting hotter. "Whatever" I said stubbornly, thankful that we were now inside. Kai removed his arm and we continued our way to class. Luckily the professor had not yet arrived and so we would still get the attendance mark. Not that ı would care anyway but Kai might. We took our usual seats in the back of the room. Kai settled into the seat next to me, and for some reason every time he moved the lump in my throat would grow. I cleared it uncomfortably and continued with the doodle on my hand. Suddenly my phone buzzed. Sighing ı fished it out of my pocket and read the text. "Where's the medicine?" It read, from Sehun. I frowned. "I don't know." I replied before putting my phone on silent. I intended to ignore anything else that would come through from Sehun, but his ill face floated into my thoughts and guilt turned my stomach. Sighing ı sent the message, "we haven't got any. Call your butler, he has your prescription." Now ı really wasn't going to speak to him again. He replied but ı ignored it and continued to stare at the front of the class. The professor then entered the class. He instantly began his lecture, not even bothering with a greeting like the other teachers had. Half way through his lecture Kai sighed besides me and leant his head on my shoulder, his feathery light hair tickling my cheek. I stiffened and hissed, "yah, what are you doing?" Kai held up his finger to his lips and hushed me. If ı wasn't feeling so...nervous, ı guess, ı would have snapped at him for even daring to hush me. "I'm sleepy. Listen to the teacher well" he said in a dry voice before closing his eyes. I opened my mouth to protest but he began snoring. They were only little, quiet snores, and ı knew they were completely fake. He was only doing it to keep me quiet. I clicked my tongue in frustration at him before shifting in my seat and continuing to listen to the professor. Or at least ı tried, but Kai's proximity was constantly in my thoughts and ı couldn't help but be distracted by the warmth of his body, the comforting sound of his quiet snores and the familiar smell of toffee that seemed to cling to Kai no matter what. When the lesson ended ı shook Kai. He really had fallen asleep. He groaned and snuggled his head further into my hair. About ten minutes later ı had managed to awake him and we began to make our way to our second class. We only had three classes today, which pleased me. That meant we had little boring lectures or seminars to attend. The second class breezed by quickly and soon it was time for lunch. My stomach growled which made Kai chuckle. "Come on, let's go eat" he said. I nodded and followed him eagerly. The lunch hall was busier than usual today. We were shoved and pushed into the lunch line. I watched as Kai piled the plate with pizza and chips, salad and rice. "Aren't you eating" ı asked when ı noticed him only take one drink. He shook his head. "Not today." I didn't bother to press the subject but focused more on the amount of food there was. "Yah, how do you expect me to eat all that?! Put it back" ı demanded, reaching for the plate. Kai slapped my hand away as he stuck out his lip stubbornly. "You can't put food back that you've already taken" he scolded. I rolled my eyes. "But ı can't eat all of that!" I protested. He just smiled cheekily and didn't reply, walking away from the line and towards a table. I followed him, glum from defeat. But a problem appeared. There wasn't anywhere for us to sit. The large group of boys including Chanyeol and Sehun and that girl were not there, or if they were they weren't sitting together. Every table had at least three people on it. "Kai!" Someone called. We turned to see Chanyeol beckoning us over. Kai grinned and walked over to the table. I suddenly felt shy and half hid behind Kai. I wasn't shy of Chanyeol, but was more shy of the two strangers sat at the table. Except they weren't complete strangers. I had seen them both sat with Sehun on my first day here. And by the sudden light in their eyes ı knew they recognised who ı was. "Sit down" Chanyeol instructed, removing his bag from the empty seat next to him. "Yah Tao, move your coat" he said. The tall one with the dark hair and dark eyes looked up from his plate, a couple of grains of rice stuck to his lips. The sight made me smile in amusement a little. Realising what Chanyeol had said Tao grabbed his coat and chucked it randomly besides him. "Yah!" The boy next to him exclaimed when the coat hit his head and hid his eyes. "Oh, sorry hyung" Tao apologised before stuffing another spoonful of rice into his mouth. Chanyeol suddenly tugged my hand and pulled me down into the seat besides him. Kai sat next to Tao. "Ji Yoon-ieee!" Chanyeol exclaimed, ruffling my hair. "It feels like it's been soooo long since ı last saw you!...Now when was it? Yesterday?..." Chanyeol rubbed the tip of his nose as he thought. I smiled and thought it was incredibly cute. Then suddenly a chip was flicked at my face. I turned to glare at Kai. Before he could hide it his guilty expression gave him away. "Yah! What do you think you're doing?" I yelled, picking it up from the table and chucking it back at him. He dodged it before laughing. "I just wanted to let you know that you should be friendly- if that's possible- and introduce yourself" he informed. I rolled my eyes. Like they didn't know who ı was anyway. I chewed my lip nervously. I wasn't used to introducing myself to people. ı hadn't done it over in Europe and wasn't sure how to do it in Korea. Kai rolled his eyes. "Guys this is Moon Ji Yoon" Kai said for me. I narrowed my eyes at him. "You shut up, that's not it! I'll do it" ı said, unable to trust Kai not to use my most hated name again. "Hello, ı'm Jessica Moon, ı hope we'll get along" ı said as pleasantly as ı could, dipping my head in a small bow. I think ı had done it right. Judging by the looks on the boys faces it hadn't been so bad. "Hi, ı'm Zi Tao, but since you're pretty you can call me Tao" Tao said, smiling broadly with glittering, friendly eyes. He reminded me of a puppy. A very good looking puppy. I blushed a little at his smooth compliment. "I'm Yi Xing, but call me Lay" the boy besides him introduced himself. He gave me a small smile, flashing one adorable dimple in his cheeks and ı could see the curiosity in his eyes. He too, was good looking, and ı wondered if it must be a thing amongst Kai and Sehun's friends, since they seemed to have the same ones. "And of course you already know me" Chanyeol said, grinning and slinging his arm around my shoulders. I couldn't help but laugh. Kai frowned and knocked his hand away, which for some reason made me smile. The four boys erupted into endless banter, throwing food at each other now and then. Since ı had arrived in Seoul, ı hadn't actually seen Kai smile or laugh so much when we've been with other people. You could tell he cared about his friend a lot, and they to him, so ı couldn't help but wonder what was keeping him and Sehun apart. Suddenly Kai got up, reaching for his coat. "I'm leaving first" he said, sliding his chair under the table. I looked up from my slice of pizza and frowned. "Why?" I didn't want to spend the rest of the day alone. "I've got a business meeting to attend. Filling in the old man's place since he's ill. You know, training for the heir" he said glumly. I had known about Kai being the heir to his fathers car company, but had not known about his father being ill. He had looked well last time ı had seen him. I was about to say something but Lay got there first. "Don't worry, we'll take care of Jess-ssi" he assured Kai, offering me a friendly smile. I returned it and suddenly felt more comfortable. Maybe spending the rest of lunch with Kai's friends wouldn't be such a scary idea. Kai's gaze flickered to Chanyeol and he grinned. "That's exactly why ı'm worried" Kai said. Chanyeol stuck his tongue out at him. "Whatever. Yah, didn't you say you had a meeting to attend? Then go!" He pushed Kai away. The boys laughed and Kai patted my head. "I'll see you later" Kai said to me before bidding the other boys goodbye and leaving. I tried to sit quietly in my seat so ı would hopefully be unnoticeable, but it didn't work like that. "So, Jess, you're getting married to Sehun huh?" Tao said, resting his head on his hands with his elbows on the table. The other boys shot him warning glances but like a little child he seemed oblivious and looked at me eagerly for answers. I chewed my chip before answering, "ı guess so." Tao chuckled. "Wah, looks like you drew the short straw!" Tao said, leaning back in his seat. Chanyeol sniggered next to me. Lay seemed to be the only one who could keep a calm expression. "What do you mean?" I asked, wondering what information ı'd be able to pry from a childish looking Tao. He smirked playfully and took a big gulp of his drink. "Well let's see...you live with him so ı don't have to tell you how much of a moody he can be" Tao explained. Chanyeol chuckled and even Lay broke a small smile. I too smiled because ı did know all too well how much of a moody person Sehun can be. "And since you're getting married you'll have to put up with him for agesssss" Chanyeol added, put emphasis on the last word. I frowned. I don't know about 'ages'. After all, divorces were common these days. Tao shook his head. "You poor, poor girl...oh, and one last thing, Kai also likes you, so you're stuck between them like..." Tao suddenly broke off from his sentence and exclaimed in pain. He glared at Lay who had just kicked him under the table. Lay looked back at him sternly. "Yah!" Tao yelled at him, annoyed. A few curious heads turned in our direction. "Aigoo" Lay whacked him on the back of his head. "Yah, Sehun and Kai will kill you. Don't make it uncomfortable for her" he murmured. I don't think ı was supposed to hear but ı did. I narrowed my eyes at them suspiciously. Just as ı was about to interrogate them Chanyeol took me by the elbow, with my tray and pulled me out of my seat. "Jess-ssi, you're plates getting empty. Come on, let's get some more" Chanyeol said with fake eagerness. I looked down at my plate. I hadn't even eaten half of it yet. "But...!" I looked back at Tao and Lay with longing. I had been so close to figuring out why Kai and Sehun hated each other. I couldn't give up now. Chanyeol quickened his pace. "Yah, what are you all hiding from me?" I questioned Chanyeol. I could just tell from the twinkle in his eyes that he was desperate to tell me, but he forced it away. "I can't tell" he said helplessly. "Why? Tell me, or else ı'll...ı'll..." I trailed off, unable to think of what ı'd actually do. "Tell me!" I finally pleaded. Chanyeol frowned. "Drop it, please. If ı tell you, Sehun and Kai will really kill me" he desperately tried to convince me. I eventually gave in to the desperation in his eyes and frowned glumly. "Fine, but ı won't be so nice next time!" ı warned. Chanyeol smiled gratefully. "Thank you Jess-ieee" he said before turning to the food. He shovel-ed a few more chips onto my plate and then we turned to leave. Then suddenly my tray was out of my hands and bouncing on the floor, the food scattering madly across the floor. I looked up to see who the guilty person was that had knocked over my tray, and met the smiling face of Sehun's 'girlfriend'. "Yah" ı snapped. I wasn't annoyed because of the loss of food. ı couldn't actually care less. But ı was annoyed that we had claimed almost everyone's attention, ı was annoyed because ı had to see her stupid, annoying face again and most of all ı was annoyed because she nearly got juice all over my Doc Martins. Nearly being the key word. If she had ı would already have knocked her to the ground and make her beg for forgiveness. "You should watch where you walk, Jessica Moon" she said in a cold, smooth voice. I narrowed my eyes at her but before ı could say anything Chanyeol beat me to it. "Yah, Yoona, what do you think you are doing?" Chanyeol asked. I had never heard his deep voice go so cold and intimidating. Yoona's expression changed when she faced Chanyeol. "Oppa! I didn't see you standing there" she exclaimed in a fake, sweet tone. I rolled my eyes and Chanyeol scoffed. Besides me Tao and Lay appeared. "Jess-ssi, are you okay? What's going on?" Tao asked, looking at the mess on the floor. "Tao oppa!" Yoona exclaimed, trying to take the attention away from me by flying to Tao's side and hugging his arm. Tao literally cringed away from her grasp. "What happened?" Lay asked reasonably. Yoona smiled sweetly. "The clumsy foreigner dropped her tray. She should have watched where she was walking" Yoona explained, pouting for bonus points. I scoffed and a smirk appeared on my face. "Did she hell! Everyone saw you knock it over" Chanyeol exclaimed, making a few people jump. He glared at Yoona and threw a protective arm around my shoulders. Yoona frowned with hurt on her face before shooting me a glare. "Oppa why would you say that?!" She yelled at Chanyeol before turning away and running through the crowd, her face hid as if she were crying. She was faking it of course. Anyone could tell. No trace of guilt was seen on Chanyeol's face as he turned and examined my clothes for any food splashes. "Look's like you're clean" he said, grinning. I stared at the large mess on the floor. It was beginning to smell. I felt Lay's hands on my shoulders. "Don't worry about that. The cleaners will deal with it. Let's get you some more to eat" he suggested, beginning to steer me towards the food stations. I shook my head. "I don't want to eat anything else. In fact, ı think ı should make my way to class. It'll be starting soon" ı said politely. Lay smiled slightly and let go of my shoulders. "Okay. Do you want us to take you or...?" He trailed off his sentence. Before ı had a chance to reply Tao linked his arm through mine and beamed. "Let's go together!" Tao exclaimed enthusiastically. Lay gave him a warning look and they looked at me uncomfortably. Suddenly ı giggled. In the past ı have had people be wary around me. Cautious as if my answer could mean life or death. They still are. But with these three boys it felt sincere, for once. Unlike everyone else they didn't seem to be wary for their own gain, but because they genuinely wanted me to be comfortable. And they weren't doing it just because they wanted something from me later. The thought made me smile. "Sure" ı agreed. All three faces lit up and broke out in unison into a smile. "Let's go then!" Tao said with his face as bright as a child's on Christmas morning. I giggled again as they dragged me away to my class. "Sorry about Yoona" Lay said to me on the way there. "Yeah, sorry about her. She can be a real pain. You're about ten times nicer than her, and prettier" Chanyeol added, nodding with a cheeky grin. Lay clicked his tongue at him and Chanyeol stuck out his tongue in a very mature response. "Isn't she Sehun's girlfriend?" I asked, my curiosity burning. Besides me Tao laughed. "She wishes!" He said between laughs. "Sehun-ah hasn't dated anyone since..." Tao stopped midway in his sentence when Chanyeol whacked him around the back of the head. "Yah, hyung! There was no need!" Tao snapped, leaving my side to go tackle Chanyeol. I watched the two boys with so much amusement that ı almost forgot to be suspicious. Almost being the key word. I turned to Lay whilst the other two boys fought. "What did he mean? Since who?" I questioned Lay. Lay gulped uncomfortably and his eyes wandered everywhere but to my face. "Nothing really. Sehun just doesn't date anymore" Lay casually explained with a simple shrug as if that was it. But ı knew there was more to the story. However ı could tell Lay was sensible, and ı wouldn't be able to pick out the information ı wanted from him, so there was no point and ı quickly gave up. "Ah, hyung! That hurts!" Tao suddenly exclaimed, making me and Lay jump. We turned to see Tao being pulled at the ear by Chanyeol. "Yah, you two, won't you stop?" Lay snapped, raising his fist at them both in a threat. They flinched away. Chanyeol released Tao's ear and Tao let go of his grip on Chanyeol's hair. I laughed before stepping away from them. "Well, here's my class. I'll see you guys later" ı said, my hand on the doorknob. Chanyeol and Tao grinned at me in goodbye. "Bye Jess-ssi!" They exclaimed in unison before starting to tackle each other again. Lay rolled his eyes at them before giving me a small wave. "See you soon Jessica" he said politely before turning back to the two fighting boys. "Aigoo, you two. I swear one day ı'll...!" He raised his hand and Tao let go of the grip he had on Chanyeol, running away from both Chanyeol and Lay and yelling at them from down the corridor. I laughed before entering the room of my last class for the day, where Kai hadn't arrived and ı would be sitting alone. I quickly checked my phone out of habit. "Thank you" it read. The message was from Sehun and was a response to our conversation that morning. I cleared my throat as my stomach did a little flip and switched off my phone. However for the rest of the lesson ı was unable to get Sehun or Kai out of my mind. It was driving me crazy.
