Chapter 21

The Arranged Marriage.
When class ended the students and teacher cleared out immediately, elated because it was the end of the day. I took a deep breath, preparing myself for whatever Kai might throw at me and turned to face him. However all that was there was air. I blinked in surprise for a couple of seconds before looking around to see where Kai had gone. Immediately ı saw him. He was still sat in his seat, but his face was buried into the folds of his bag and he held it close to his body. A small smile broke across my face as ı poked his rib. "Jong In-ah" ı called, prodding him some more. Kai moaned and shifted in his seat, turning his head so his face was visible. With my forefinger ı gently flicked away strands of hair from his face. He looked so peaceful whilst he was sleeping, like a child again. I had missed his childish expression that he wore with so much ease. "Jong In" ı sang, prodding the centre of his forehead. His eyes flicked open and ı jumped from the sudden movement. Kai sat up in his seat, patting down his hair before hiding a yawn. I straightened in my seat and began to chew my lip nervously. When the sleep had worn off he looked at me with sudden seriousness in his eyes. I shifted uncomfortably. "Sorry" ı mumbled, again unsure of exactly what ı was apologising for. He frowned, a crease forming in his forehead as he studied me carefully. Then suddenly it melted away and he let out a long sigh. "Come on" he drawled, swinging on his coat and bag. I grabbed my own and followed after him. "Where? Where are we going?" I asked, jogging to catch up with his long strides. Kai turned to me and there was a light smile on his face, which instantly lifted about a tonne from my stomach. "To get something to eat. I'm still hungry" he said in a childish voice, patting his stomach. I smiled, grateful that he wasn't going to chew me out just yet, and willingly followed. Kai's car was warm and ı sank blissfully into the sports chair. He pulled up outside a noodle and soup restaurant. Inside the building it was traditionally decorated. Paper lamps served as decoration whilst each dining area was separated by sliding doors. Inside each room was a low table surrounded by colourful cushions. I was too distracted by the theme to realise Kai had left me. Looking around in slight panic ı walked down the corridor that led off to different dining rooms. Finally ı found Kai in the fourth room. He was already sat on a cushion, his coat beneath him and his bag on his lap. Shyly ı entered the room and slid the door closed, sitting cross legged by the table. It smelled of fresh wood and my toes burned at the sudden warmth. In ten minutes about a dozen bowls of different foods were laid out on the table. Spinning the chopsticks in my hand ı stared hungrily at all the different dishes, unable to think of which one to eat first. "Here" Kai said, smiling before sliding me over a bowl of rice that was decorated with an almost orange coloured sauce. "Try this. It's my favourite" he suggested, picking up a clump of rice and sauce and holding it up to my mouth. I stared at him suspiciously for a second before biting it whole. The rice was delicious, different to rice ı had, had before. It wasn't sticky or dry. And the sauce was sweet. It reminded me of sweet and sour. He looked at me with big eyes, waiting for my verdict on the dish. I broke out into a smile and took another bite. "Delicious" ı said in between mouthfuls. Kai smiled, radiating satisfaction and he pulled a bowl closer to him. We ate in a comfortable silence, occasionally making small talk. Though ı was full, ı wanted to eat more. The food was so nice. For as long as ı had been in Korea ı had refused to eat a single traditional meal. Of course the pizza take outs and chips (fries if you're american) didn't do my health any good. ı had refused to eat a single thing the maids had cooked. But here ı was, with Kai, eating a traditional banquet. Kai always managed to find a way to break my rules. Then Kai suddenly clicked his tongue at me, shaking his head. "What?" I asked innocently, covering my mouth to prevent rice from spitting out before swallowing the mouthful. Kai leaned over the table, skillfully avoiding the remaining bowls of food, and used his thumb to wipe away the sauce from the corner of my mouth. For some reason my tummy did a little flip when Kai got so close. I reasoned it to just be trauma from Sehun's attack, but something told me it was different. "Aish, you're such a messy eater. How many times will ı have to wipe your mouth?" Kai scolded before going back to dunking rice in soup. His way of eating made me laugh inside. I fought away my blush and continued to eat. A short while later we finished eating. I cracked my knuckles, a habit ı had developed as a child, and gave a yawn. My stomach was about to burst from all the food ı had eaten and ı could feel my lids droop in sleep. When ı looked up from my hands ı found Kai staring at me, but with a look ı had dreaded all evening. I gazed shyly up at him through my eyelashes. "You were probably worried when you called, right?" I muttered guiltily, thinking ı might as well as start off the conversation first. He sighed heavily. "I was. You were with Sehun. Of course ı was" he said in a stern voice. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have worried you like that" ı mumbled. He took a deep breath and a small, forced smile appeared on his face. "Don't be. It's not my place to interfere with you and...Sehun." I then lifted up my chin and gazed at him intently. "Exactly what happened between you and Sehun? And don't deny anything. I can read you like a book when you lie" ı suddenly questioned. It felt like ı had completed an impossible mission by finally asking him the question that had been on my mind since day one. He puffed up his cheeks with air as he tried to think of what to say. I never let my eyes leave his face for a second. "I think...that's something to tell you about another day. But not today. Not now" he stated calmly. I opened my mouth to protest but he had already stood up and was putting his coat on. "Come on. Let's get you home" he said. I stuck my bottom lip out and crossed my arms. "Not until you tell me" ı demanded. He sighed, rolled his eyes at me and bent down to pick up my bag, laughing. "Stop being stubborn Ji Yoon-ah" he scolded before opening the door and walking out. I quickly grabbed my coat and followed after him, jogging so ı wouldn't lose sight of him and end up lost like ı almost did last time. "Yah, wait for me" ı called as we got outside. Kai slowed down his pace slightly and we made our way towards his navy blue sports car. It was sunset when we arrived at the universities car park. "I'll see you tomorrow" Kai said in farewell when ı exited the car. "Bye! Don't think about me too much" ı responded. He rolled his eyes and an amused smile appeared on his face. "I'll try" he waved good bye and was about to pull away before honking the car horn at me. I jumped, my hand pressed to my heart as ı turned to glower at Kai. He rolled his window down and his expression had gone all serious like before. "Ji Yoon-ah" he said almost as if to check if ı were listening though ı was facing him. "What?" I snapped. He sighed and drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. "When you're with me...if you can avoid it...don't mention Sehun to me, understand?" He said each syllable carefully, as if he were speaking to a little child. I opened my mouth to reply but before ı had the chance he quickly pulled the car away. It's engine roared as it sped through the almost empty car park and onto the main streets. Frowning ı got into the car and started to make my way home, but then my phones loud ring tone pierced the air. Glancing at the caller ID ı saw that it was Sehun. I quickly answered his call. "Yah, where are...?" I started to yell before he had the chance to say anything, but ı was quickly cut off by an unfamiliar voice. "You're friend is drunk" the man said in an unpleasant voice. I cleared my throat and asked, "who are you?" I could hear Sehun groan on the other end. I guessed the man was trying to wake him up. "I'm the bartender. Now come pick up your boyfriend! He's taking up the space" with that the nasty man held up. I stared in frustration at the phone. How was ı supposed to know where he was? I called him back. This time Sehun answered. "Jessssss" he slurred in a lazy, drunk voice. I my teeth in disgust. "Where are you?" I snapped. He chuckled on the other line before telling me the address. I then quickly hung up, turned the car around and made my way to the bar.
