Strong Willed

Minzy slowly came to, to the soft humming of Zelo's heart monitor. As her eyes fluttered open, she frowned as she saw her brother still fast asleep. "Damn you must be having a good dream to be sleeping this long," she yond as she sat up still dressed from the previous night's engagement. Standing to her feet, she made her way to the bathroom and looked at her horrible reflection. Her makeup was smeared from left to right and her hair seemed to have been caught in some kind of rain storm. Groaning, she quickly went about trying to wipe off the makeup and making herself look somewhat presentable. Minzy was a bit surprised as she exited to see the doctor awaiting her presence.

"Good morning," he smiled.

"Morning," she apologetically bowed as she walked out of the bathroom. "Sorry, I hope I didn't keep you waiting for too long."

"No you're fine I just walked in. But I just wanted to let you know that your brother is now stable. All we have to do is wait until he's ready to wake up."

"That's great, do you know how long that will take?"

He sighed and shook his head, "That's the hard part. It can range from a few days to a couple weeks. It's up to him."

She frowned as she gazed down at her brother, "So you're telling me I could wait forever."

The weekend came and went yet Zelo was still unconscious. As much as she wanted to stay by his side, she had some things to take care of at school. "Okay mom I'll be back after school," Minzy instructed as she tucked the blankets in around Zelo. "I don't care what time it is I want you to call me if he wakes up. Okay?"

Her mom nodded as she took a seat, "I can do that."

"Thanks," Minzy grinned seeing how their conversation was pretty calm. "Please don't leave his side."

"I won't," her mother sighed. "Now go before you're going to be late." Minzy nodded as she pecked her brother's forehead before making her way out.

Minzy hated how her life was so complicated when it came to her social life. Unlike the movies, life didn't end for Minzy after Senior ball it continued on. She figured that if life was going to keep moving so was she. Even if her life was less than desireable, she had to keep going, if not for her sake for her brother's. "Let's get this day over with," she told herself as she walked into the school. Taking her seat in her first class, she didn't say a word to her supposed best friend's that walked into the classroom. It was as if they knew this was going to happen, as they hesitated in sitting by her. As pathetic as it looked, Minzy ignored their presence as she watched her teacher walk in ready to start the lecture. She was surprised at how much she enjoyed the lecture. The thought crossed her mind that maybe being mad at her best friend's were for the best, maybe now she could actually focus and learn something. "Alright class I want you to review the chapters we went over. Remember that just because your Senior Ball is done doesn't mean school is done."

"Yes ma'am," the students in the class all hummed as they packed their things, while Minzy quickly picked her things up to make her way to her instructor.

"Could I please have a word with you," Minzy asked her teacher.

"Sure," her teacher said, surprised Minzy of all people wanted to meet with her after class.

Meanwhile her best friends walked out of class confused as to what Minzy did, but it gave them a chance to regroup before they would see her again. "I want to go to college," Minzy blurted out.

"You what," her instructor asked unsure if she heard right.

"I want to know what I need to do to get into college," Minzy repeated herself. "I know that if I really want to be independent the best option would be for me to go to college. It's my chance at a better life."

The teacher held her chest impressed by the well thought out conclusion by one of her struggling students, "That's very wise of you Ms. Gong. But it takes more than just the desire to get into college."

"I know."

"Then you must know that getting into college actually requires you to do your work," the teacher gave her a questioning glance.

Minzy nodded in understanding, "I know and understand what you're getting at. But I'm not asking to get into a prestigeous college or anything to start with. I just want to get there first. Whether it be community or online, whatever it may be just help me get there, please."

The teacher paused and thought about what her student was asking of her, "Well we first need to get your grades up. I'll assign you a mentor to help get you up to speed but I'm also going to need you to jump at any extra credit offers you get as well. Understood?" Minzy nodded happily as she soaked up all the instructions of her teacher. "You'll need to get started as soon as possible so I'll have your mentor ready for you after school today in the library. You two will be studying for two hours after school each day."

"Thank you, I promise I won't let you down," Minzy said gratefully as she waved goodbye to her teacher.

Minzy bought a juice from the vending machine before walking outside to call her mom. Checking in on Zelo she frowned hearing that he was still the same. Sighing, she mindlessly began to walk the halls. She didn't want to make things awkward for her in the lunch room and not sit with her best friends. Or should she even call them that? Shrugging at the thought she found herself browsing the bulletin board and finding various extra credit offers. "Yes," she grinned as she pulled various papers off the board and reading through a couple of them. "Oh there's one going on right now," she spotted a lunch lecture she could attend in the auditorium. Slipping inside, she was impressed at her timing.

"Welcome everyone to our college career day! Let me first thank all of you for attending this lecture instead of hanging out with your friends during this hour. But let me tell you all it's all worth it in the end. You'll see by the end of the lecture," the speaker opened before diving right into what he came to talk about. Minzy felt so enlightened as she stood to her feet. "Please make sure you all grab a ticket for your teachers to see for extra credit and also fill out the form. Who knows you might have the chance of winning some free money to go to school," the speaker said before walking off stage.

Taking the speaker's advice, Minzy grabbed a form and quickly filled it out. Just like he said, there isn't any harm in trying when it comes to applying for scholarships. Maybe just maybe it would be her lucky day and she'd get picked, she thought as she finished her form. Turning in her form, she was taken aback to see Bom heading in her direction. "Hmm, what a surprise," Bom said as she walked up to Minzy.

"I know, who would have thought. A rich kid trying to steal more money for themselves," Minzy countered as she remembered her father mentioning working for Bom's father.

"I want to earn my way to college. And you? Did you lose your way to the cafeteria," Bom tried to mock her.

"You wouldn't know what it's like to earn anything," Minzy scoffed.

"I know that it takes grades to earn your way into college," Bom spat right back.

"But it takes more than just grades to make it in the real world sweetie. So take that money you were born with and use some of it to buy you a clue...because you don't have a clue on how to make it on your own," Minzy smirked as she pushed past her.

"Don't worry I have Seunghyun," Bom called after her.

Pausing she turned to glance back at the dork, "Is that all you got? That's pretty sad." Turning away Minzy left to head to her next class.

No matter how burnt out Minzy felt at the moment, she knew she had to be at the library after school. Taking a seat at one of the open tables, Minzy sighed as she laid her hear onto it. Maybe she could take a quick break before her mentor person arrived. "Are you okay?"

"No," Minzy frowned as she waved her hand at the person talking to her. "Go away you're bothering me. I'm waitng for someone."

"And who might that be," the person asked as he took a seat across from her.

"None of your business. Now leave me be," she mumbled as she closed her eyes.

"Minzy it is my business," the person said poking her forehead.

"Don't touch me," she hissed as she sat up to see Seunghyun sitting across from her. "What I do is my business so leave me alone! Go bother someone else."

"But I wanna bother you," he pouted as he tried to reach over and poke her again to get his hand swatted away.

"You're really annoying you know that?! Now get lost," she snapped at him.

"That's the meanest welcoming I've ever received," he continued to pout at her.

She groaned as she pressed her fingers against her temple, "Damn it I don't have time to put up with your right now!"

"Minzy this is no way of welcoming your mentor," he said.

"Mentor," she repeated as she cocked her head up.

"Yes, the mentor you asked for to help you graduate for school and hopefully get into college," he rephrased himself.

"No ing way," she breathed in shock. "No ing way," she then growled as she stood to her feet. "I'm not going to be mentored by some ing idiot!"

"Shhh," the librarian gave Minzy a scolding look.

But Minzy wasn't going to let up, "Nope this is not happening!" Gathering her things, she quickly began to bolt for the door.

"Fine, if you want to fail this year and repeat it in night school go ahead and walk out that door," Seunghyun's voice echoed after her causing her to pause in her tracks. "But if you still want to go to college I suggest you come back here."

Minzy stood thinking about his words and reflected on the words of the speaker from earlier that day. But it was the thought of her unconscious brother that turned her around. It was the thought of being able to make Zelo proud that made her sit back down. "I can't believe I'm doing this."

"You made the right choice," he grinned as he began to pull out his books.

"At least one of us is," she mumbled under her breath loud enough for him to hear.

Sighing he shook his head, "This isn't going to work if we're hostile towards each other."

"Well what do you expect from me? Do you want me to act fake around you and make it seem like everything is alright when it's not?" He shook his head and she couldn't help but roll her eyes at him, "Then what should we do?"

"How about we do some kind of peace treaty," he suggested.

"Peace treaty?"

"Yes, we both agree that during the two hours of mentoring we have together that nothing else matters but your education. Is that fair to say?"

"What's in it for you," she asked suspiciously.

"An amazing recommendation letter," he grinned. "Now what do you say?"

"So when we are together it's nothing but my education? No bias talk about what is happening outside of my education," she asked for clarification. Nodding, the two were able to agree upon the terms and get to work.

"Sweet this was a great start," Seunghyun smiled at her as he packed his things.

"Thanks, I think I could possibly get all this," Minzy grinned as she skimmed through her notes. Looking at the time, the pair made their way towards the exit.

"I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" Nodding, she walked away rereading her notes without realizing the spying eyes.

"Minzy," she subconsciously looked at the call of her name to see Jiyong. Frowning, she shook her head and continued to keep walking. "Wait Minzy, please," Jiyong called after her.

"I don't want to talk to you," she simply said as she kept walking.

"But I want to talk to you," he breathed as he moved in front of her path. "Can you please give me a minute?"

"What?"

"Can we talk," he asked.

"Isn't that what we're doing," she stated annoyed by his presence.

"True, you have a point. I can give you all the excuses in the world but that wouldn't be fair to you. But I just need to know something...where do we stand," he asked through pleading eyes.

She coughed a laugh as she shrugged, "I think you made it very clear at Senior Ball."

", about that...," he mumbled as he ran his fingers through his hair.

"What? What did you do?"

He sighed as he looked away, "I was faced drunk that I didn't know what the hell I was doing or thinking."

"I thougth you said you wouldn't give me excuses," she said using his words against him.

" Minzy! What I'm asking is can we please start over," he finally said.

"What about Fei," she asked.

"I'll figure it out..."

She shook her head and stopped him in his tracks, "Fix it before you try and ask for anything from me." Giving him a look of all seriousness, she then made her way to her car. Jumping into her car, she wondered what the hell was going on. "And they say that girls are complicated," she mumbled to herself as she drove back to the hospital.

Minzy felt like a sponge soaking up all her notes and practice tests. She couldn't remember the last time she had studied this hard in school. Her social life had literally consumed her to the point that she never really thought too much into the whole school thing. But if social life was a class, she would be the top of her class in that subject. She had flown to the top of the social pyramid effortlessly, it was as if she was born to stand out and rise above. Now if only she could use what time she had left in high school to rise above in her education, that would top her dying social life. "Sweet got everything done with five minutes to spare," she said to herself outloud proudly. Pushing her notes towards Seunghyun she began to pack her things, "How does it look?" She kept her end of the deal the past couple of days, keeping strictly to studying and making every second count with her mentor on getting feedback.

"It looks like you'll be tutoring me soon," he said impressed with how detailed her notes were.

She chuckled as she took her notes and placed them in her bag, "Trust me, I already am. So I guess I'll see you tomorrow then?"

"Same time, same place," he grinned as he picked up his bag to walk out with her.

"Sure thing," she nodded before making her way towards the auditorium.

"Isn't your car the other way," he called after her

"Maybe I wanna take a different route," she shrugged as she kept walking towards the auditorium.

"Welcome, nice to see you here. I'm glad to see that you truly do value your education," her teacher smiled.

Minzy couldn't help but mirror her teacher's smile, "I have a lot to work for."

"Speaking of work, that's something I need to do. I hope you enjoy the play," her teacher gave her shoulder a warm squeeze before walking in.

Taking a deep breath, Minzy entered into the crowded auditorium. There were people all over the place chatting away and taking their various seats. Seeing an empty aisle seat, she quickly slipped in just in time for the announcer to step on stage. Seeing the lights dim to signal for everyone to quiet down and take their seats, Minzy's view was blocked by someone squeezing in. "Hey thanks for saving me a spot," Seunghyun said as he settled into the seat next to her.

"That seat is taken," she whispered as she nodded to the seat he was sitting in.

"By me," he countered before shushing her as the play began.

Rolling her eyes she turned to the stage to see her enemy dressed in some rags as she pretended to be scrubbing the floor. "The true colors of Bom," she smirked. But as the play continued she didn't like how Bom portayed herself so helpless and weak against her step sisters and especially her stepmother. Seeing how Bom played Cinderella so effortlessly it all made sense to her as Bom cried and received a fairy Godmother who granted all her wishes. Bom wearing some glamorous dress and waltzing across the stage with prince charming as her played step sisters and stepmother stood in awe in frustration. Minzy knew how the classic fairytale of Cinderella ended and she didn't plan on watching it. Standing to her feet, she made her way out of the auditorium with fury burning in her eyes.

"Minzy where are you going, you're really going to leave before seeing the ending," Seunghyun called after her.

Minzy paused and gazed back at him, "I can't sit there watching that nonsense without wanting to get up there and punch the living day lights out of her!"

"Why," he asked.

Pointing to herself she shook her head, "I know the real story."

"What," he said confused. "What is the real story?"

"Are you sure that you want to know? Or would you like the disney version?" Pausing to see him ready for her answer she nodded, "Fine. Real talk, Cinderella was ungrateful and the prince was a dumb to have fallen in love with her after one ing dance!"

"What's wrong with him doing that," he asked.

Shaking her head she turned not wanting to say what was really on her mind, "Never mind I can't do this right now. I have to go."

Seunghyun quickly moved to stay her, "What's wrong with him doing that?"

The curiosity along with the urgency to know peeked her interest, "Why do you think it's wrong?"

"I...I asked you that," he turned it right back on her.

Shaking her head in disbelief, she didn't know if he was wanting to know her point of view on the play or what was going on between them. "You ing , you know that? I hope Cinderella makes your dumb happy." Shoving him out of her way, she rushed off before he tried to stop her again.

Minzy sighed as she took a seat next to her unconscious brother. Brushing the stray hairs from his face, she gazed lovingly at her brother, "I prefer sleeping beauty. But you're sleeping handsomely. I wonder..." Leaning forward she kissed his forehead before pressing hers to his, "It was worth a shot. I guess not every fairy tale trick works." Taking out her notes, Minzy remembered the scholarship papers her teacher had given her. She sat staring at the papers not knowing where to start. Though she had been doing so much better in school with the added extra credit points she had been receiving, she still felt stuck. She didn't know how to explain it, but she felt like she was stuck in a stand still of something she just didn't know what. "I need some fresh air," she sighed as she made her way out of the hospital. Taking a seat on a nearby bench, she closed her eyes and tried to clear her mind. Not paying much attention to her surroundings, she didn't notice the person who quietly took a seat next to her. Opening her eyes, she glanced over to see it was none other than Bom sitting next to her.

"What the do you want," Minzy hissed.

Bom crossed her arms and legs as she stared just as intensely as Minzy, "What do you think?"

"You got some ing nerves to come over here. Or maybe you're just preparing for when I you up again," Minzy smirked.

Rolling her eyes Bom seemed unamused by her threat, "Look, I just came here to check and see if there is anything between you and Seunghyun."

"I guess there is or else you wouldn't be here. Is there trouble in paradise," Minzy asked sarcastically.

"You know what, I'm not doing this," Bom stood to her feet shaking her head. "I don't even know why I came..." she began to walk away.

"Because you don't want what happened to me to happen to you," Minzy finished her sentence. "But don't you worry Cinderella your fairy Godmother will come and rescue you from all your troubles," she seeing she must have come right after the play had finished with the makeup still apparent on her face.

"You're such a ," Bom turned to spit right back.

"Who are you to think it's okay to confront me when you were the side dish and I was the ing main course? Don't get it twisted, I may be a but I'm the main . While you are just a place holder," Minzy said smuggly.

" you," Bom retorted.

"In your dreams," Minzy coughed a laugh before Bom's eyes widened, shifted around in panic, then dropping as if embarassed. "Wait a minute, did that mother er sleep with you? Is that why you're so insecure?" Minzy saw how Bom shifted uncomfortably, staying quiet. "Hmm...well great job on fulfilling your duties as the side hoe. Enjoy the fact that you just gave yourself to someone that doesn't give a about you."

"You don't know that," Bom snapped.

"You don't know either or else you wouldn't be standing here now would you?" Minzy watched as Bom's eyes began to water, " Bom you're such a ing baby! Grow up, you can't cry and think that a damn fairy Godmother will come and save you from this. If that happened then you wouldn't ever learn."

"Learn what?!"

"Weak women like you make me sick. It's no wonder why Seunghyun went to you. You gave it up so easily," Minzy said coldly.

"I hate you Minzy," Bom said covering her face as she ran off crying.

"Damn girl you're ing mean," Jiyong chuckled as he stepped into view.

"And you're ing annoying," she flipped her hair as she began to walk away.

"Minzy wait I need to talk to you," he said as he took hold of her wrist. "Stop please."

"Let go of my hand or I will break it off for you," she growled.

"Okay I'm going to let go, but please just let me say what I need to," he warned as he released his grasp.

"What?!"

"Look Minzy I ed up. I mean I ed up real bad and I just wanted to come and apologize. I'm sorry I showed up with Fei. But I just wanted to let you know that I've done some thinking and I think it best if we kept our relationship as just friends."

"Just friends? What the does that mean," she raised her voice.

"I think I might have feelings for Fei..."

She rose her hand to him to stop him, "I don't want to hear it. You can just go to hell since I know you and Fei already did the deed."

"It's not because..."

"She's good in bed? Save it. I don't care. Go Fei and while your at it you can ask Hyuna if she wants to join you both I know that's how they get down," Minzy snapped before making her way back into the hospital. Anger boiled right through her as she picked up her scholarship papers and began to fill them out.
