Chapter 48

A Cracked Reflection

“Are you okay??” Himchan’s voice was the first thing Jongup heard as he was lead back to his cell.

He could see the tension in Minhyuk’s arm as he was pulled along, and from an outside point of view, it looked as though the elder cop was holding his arm with enough grip to make his fingers go numb from lack of circulation. But Jongup knew better, the grip was almost feather light against his skin and even though the cops were the reason him and his family were being put into prison in the first place, Jongup was glad to have such a good actor on their side.

Jongup managed to catch Himchan’s eyes before he was pushed into his cell, and offered the elder a smile and a nod of his head before he was moved into the room. Minhyuk removed the handcuffs before backing out and shutting and locking the door.

“We’ll have to try a different one, this one doesn’t talk.” Minhyuk’s voice echoed down the hall as he spoke to the guard at the ending of the hallway.

“We’ve got time… one of them is bound to crack eventually. If not we can just move them all to state prison. Let them rot in jail.”

The annoyance was clear in Minhyuk’s voice, as he continued to talk to the guard rather loudly, “You heard what Youngjae said, these guys are nothing, he didn’t even know them. He doubts that they even knew who was in charge!”

“Yeah, whatever, that little punk thinks he’s hot now. Jieun will be fine with these five…”

“Not if the rest of their gang is still out there wandering the streets.” Minhyuk warned. “I don’t want anyone talking to them until we finish up our interrogations.”

“Yeah, let me just write myself a reminder, ‘Don’t talk to the street trash’, yup, got it.”

Down the hall, Yongguk leaned against his doorframe, listening carefully to everything the guards said. He and Himchan both had told Youngjae how small the gang was when they revealed that they were the co-leaders for the tiny street gang. He’d known from practically the beginning that it was just the five of them. Why had he lied to his coworkers, even going as far as telling them that he didn’t know who they were? He bit his lip, shaking his head as he pushed up from the wall and crossed the room.

He got down onto his stomach, moving the broken brick aside from his wall. Within the first hour of pacing the room, he’d found the flaw in the wall, exploiting it to his own gain.

Truthfully, he wished that they’d all been put into one cell, as Yongguk wanted to comfort the two teens who he thought were much too young to be wrapped up in this. He had a feeling that Himchan needed some sort of comfort to, as being held against his will was something Himchan had never been good with.

Yongguk, however, was glad that he could at least extend a hand through the hole in the wall. His fingertips just barely reached the other side, and the occupant next to him had to meet him half way. Yongguk was happy that he could provide some sort of comfort, even if it was just a mere squeeze of a hand, to Daehyun as the boy had broken down into tears several times and had refused to speak since he had last spoken in the armored van.

Still, he held Yongguk’s hand, squeezing it tightly as he tried to ease the pang of his broken heart. And Yongguk held him just as tight, trying to offer the silent support in the only way he could.

U-kwon paced the squad room, walking up and down the rows of desk with a scowl on his face. He snapped at anyone who tried to speak to him, and threatened to shoot one guy who had mumbled something about him ‘pms’ing. He’d just barely managed to get the message to Minhyuk in time when Hyunseung had walked into the observation room, and he had the growing suspicion that Hyunseung knew they were up to something. Now, more than ever, they would have to proceed with caution.

The second Minhyuk strode into the squad room, P.O stood up from his seat, “Hyung, I don’t mean to make a scene, but seriously, you two need to go in a supply closet or something, I can’t take U-kwon hyung’s pacing anymore.” He said, quite loudly.

There was a nervous till of laughter in the squad room as several other people seemed to agree, and Minhyuk rolled his eyes, going over to U-kwon, “C’mon, let’s go get some coffee and you can tell me what you’re PMSing over.”

U-kwon pouted, “I’m not PMSing!” he raised his voice as Minhyuk took him by the elbow and lead him from the squad room, smiling at the few people that thanked him for taking U-kwon off their hands.

The second they were out of ear and eye shot, Minhyuk yanked U-kwon into the nearest conference room. “You think it worked?”

“It better have, do you know how many people I threatened to shoot for looking at me? You think P.O will be able to convince everyone that I was just worried because you were talking to B.A.P…”

“I think so… You think Hyunseung’s onto us?”

U-kwon shook his head, “I don’t know… I mean… he’s a sadistic bastard, but… it looks like we are trying to get all of B.A.P, and that’s what he wants…” He sighed softly, puffing out his cheeks, “He may go to extremes, but… He does his job. What I can’t understand though is why he beat Youngjae, I get the first time, he wanted it to look real, but, JB says Jae’s injures are spread out over the week… what was his motive?”

“Hell if I know… He probably wanted the injuries to look fresh before we got B.A.P, I mean... You don’t just take someone hostage, beat the crap out of them, then let them heal up, right??”

U-kwon nodded, “Yeah… Yeah, that makes sense…” he looked up at Minhyuk, “So were you able to get everything you needed from Jongup?”

“Mhmm, I’m going to go down to the police station later and find the officer that was working the Moon case and get him to make the arrest.”

“I know we need to wrap everything up before Jieun decides to move B.A.P to prison, but, Minhyuk… we really need to figure out who the traitor is—“

The jingle of the doorknob being tested to see if it was locked startled both Minhyuk and U-kwon and quickly, Minhyuk grabbed the shorter redhead and pushed him back until his lower back was on the table, his lips instantly on U-kwon’s. The kiss was sloppy, and U-kwon was quick to throw his arms around Minhyuk’s neck and grip in to his hair, messing it up considerably to make it look like they had been at it this whole time as the door opened.

“Oh geez, get a room you two!”

Minhyuk pulled away from U-kwon, glaring at P.O, “We are in a room.” He smirked. “Besides, didn’t you tell me to do this?”

P.O rolled his eyes, “I said a supply closet, not the nearest conference room.”  He said, “Anyways, JB just called, he needs someone to come take over sitting with Youngjae.”

“What? He’s supposed to have the next three hours—“

“He got called into work, it’s an emergency.”

U-kwon sighed, “I’ll go. You two be careful.” U-kwon stuck his tongue out at P.O as the younger made a face when U-kwon pressed a quick kiss to Minhyuk’s cheek before leaving the room.

On the trip to Youngjae’s apartment, his mind was a constant turmoil of various facts that had been given to him from Youngjae’s notes, and the list of reasons and the different outcomes and what each path he’d take would cause. He sighed as he climbed the steps to Youngjae’s floor, unlocking the door with his spare key before walking in.

“Oh, thank god, I thought P.O was going to ignore me… I am so sorry about this..” JB was saying as he got up from the couch.

U-Kwon smiled, “It’s no problem, JB… Go save some lives, kay!”

JB smiled, nodding his head before he gave Youngjae a wave goodbye and left.

U-kwon let out a gusty sigh before moving to flop onto the couch.

“You guys don’t have to babysit me.” Youngjae mumbled, staring dejectedly at the wall across from him.

“Yeah… I know… But… I missed hanging out with you.”

“Liar.”

U-kwon looked offended, “Yah! I missed your polite little punk .”

A tiny smile twitched on Youngjae’s lips as he scoffed, “You miss me getting coffee for you.”

“Well… You did know how to make it just right.” U-kwon grinned, a sort of pride welling in his chest as Youngjae smiled softly at the small teases.

Things were quiet and easy between the two as Youngjae continued to stare at the wall, and U-kwon left the silence untouched. It was several minutes before Youngjae finally let out a small sigh, “I was talking to P.O earlier…” He mumbled.

“Yeah?”

“And… uhm…” He sighed again, “Was Minhyuk hyung able to talk to Jongup okay?”

U-kwon smiled gently, reaching over and resting his hand on Youngjae’s leg in a comforting manor, “Youngjae, have you been worrying yourself over that this whole time?”

Youngjae chewed on his lip, his fingers playing with the hem of his shirt, “Uh… yeah… Yeah a bit… I just… From what Dae—“ Youngjae in a harsh breath, closing his eyes tightly for just a second as he calmed his suddenly racing heart. “From what D-Daehyun told me… about what happened to Jongup… H…He didn’t deserve that, hyung… He’s always so bright and cheery… and… to be blamed for your own parent’s murder…”

U-kwon rubbed soft circles with his thumb, trying to comfort Youngjae, “Well, Minhyuk got Jongup to give the statement needed. All of our ducks are in a row and if the guys down at the police station don’t make an arrest, I will personally make it myself.”

Youngjae nodded quickly, “Thank, hyung… it…. Ah… It means a lot that you’ve put so much work into all of this… You could have just made me do all of this myself.”

U-kwon raised an eyebrow, “Yeah, and leave you will only a week to gather up the information you need? I spent two just researching the Moon murder files… While Minhyuk took the lead on D-“ U-kwon noticed the way Youngjae stiffened up, and quickly changed his train of speech, “—uh, the other cases… “

The younger didn’t look up from where he stared intently at his lap, his nails pulling at the soon to be fraying threads of the edge of his shirt as he was silently thankful for U-kwon’s consideration.

“But… Youngjae.”

“Yeah…”

“You didn’t give us much on Himchan… we can’t set everything straight for him until you tell us exactly what you meant by Yongguk saving him from some sort of violent encounter…”

Youngjae was quick to shake his head, “N-No! I mean… I… I’ll take care of this one… JB helped me set up my laptop and… don’t worry about Himchan hyung, okay… I… I’ll take care of it.”

U-kwon sighed, “Okay… if you say so.”

Back at the task force, Minhyuk paced in front of a door, taking deep breaths as he clutched the files in his hands. He shook his head, remind himself that he’d done countless interrogations on countless people for far worse things then what was in the file, hell, he had interrogated Jongup already! This should have been nothing compared to the horrors that had happened to the younger male.

Still, Minhyuk felt a sort of nervousness he’d never felt before as he finally turned to the door, his hand resting on the door knob. Maybe it wasn’t so much as what was in the files as… who the files were about.

He shook his head again, clearing his thoughts as he pushed open the door and walked in. The sole occupant of the room didn’t even look up from where he was sitting at the table and his hands, much like Jongup’s had been, were handcuffed down onto the latch that was set into the wooden surface.

Minhyuk let his fingers grip the back of the unoccupied chair as he pulled it out, sitting down. “You have trust issues.” Silence was his only answer, so Minhyuk pressed on. “Okay… you don’t have to talk, but… I know you have trust issues, and I’m not asking for you to trust me… I just want you to know that I am here to help.”

Daehyun snorted lightly, rolling his eyes, “Yeah, okay.”

“Believe what you want.” Minhyuk’s fingers played with the edge of the manila folder that he had rested onto the table. “You’re ambidextrous, right?”

“Yeah, and...?” By now Daehyun had turned his gaze to Minhyuk, staring at the other male through his fringe. “Is that a crime now too?”

“No…” Minhyuk matched Daehyun’s gaze, trying to keep a cool exterior as he pressed on. “I’m just… curious. Were you born that way, or did you have to teach yourself how to use your left hand for everyday tasks after your right arm was broken nearly four times in a row…  how long were you in that cast for, Daehyun? Nearly half a year, right?”

By now Daehyun was glaring at Minhyuk, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone white. “I am talking about this with you.”

“Your body language tells me all I need to know, Daehyun.” Minhyuk looked away from the brunette, flipping open the file and in a quick breath, “Your right arm has been broken a total of 6 times. Your left arm only twice. You’ve been to the hospital three times to relocate your shoulder. You broke your nose twice now, it lists both of those as sports accidents… You’ve managed to fall down a flight of stairs, not once, but twice, both resulting in quite a bit of bruising and some fractured ribs. You’ve gone in for a numerous amounts of stitches, once again, sports injuries is what it lists…” Minhyuk flipped the page, continuing to read off the paper as he stole glances at Daehyun, who had gone pale and was glaring a whole into the table as his hands tremored with pent up anger. “You were in… a car accident? Resulting in a crack in your leg and a concussion, file says a driver hit you while you were walking and drove off… Odd that there isn’t a police report to follow this one up with.” Minhyuk slowly closed the files, “What I am really curious about though, is how many injuries were kept off the record… how many cuts and bruises were you able to tend to at home without needing medical care?”

Daehyun didn’t lift his gaze, and Minhyuk could practically see the tension in the younger’s jaw as he ground his teeth together.

“How come you never went to the police about this, Daehyun?” Just as Minhyuk had expected, there was no reply, “Or did you… did they just not listen? Is that what it was, Daehyun… or was someone inside pulling strings, making sure that nothing ever came to light?”

Once more, Daehyun refused to answer him.

“Your last name is Jung, correct.”

Daehyun simply gave Minhyuk a single nod, unable to gather his voice up enough to speak without it shaking.

“It’s… odd, Daehyun. Neither of your parents shares your last name.”

“My mother remarried.” Daehyun finally hissed through his teeth. He finally looked up, his eyes dark as he glared at Minhyuk, “You have my file in front of you. Don’t pretend like you need me to confirm all of this. If you want to play some sort of ing game, find someone else.” He sat up a bit straighter, his hand still clenched tightly into fists, “And unless you have some sort of happy news, like that bastard driving his car of a cliff, then I do not want to hear anything else.”

Minhyuk sat back, keeping his gaze locked with Daehyun’s. “No, your step father is still alive and still married to your mother—“

“I don’t give a —“

“You have a sister.”

The anger in Daehyun’s eyes melted into surprise, as he sat up a bit more. “I—what? No… No I’m an only child... My mom didn’t want any more children. Especially not with him.”

Minhyuk shrugged, “Two months after you ran away for the last time, she got pregnant, gave birth 9 months later to a healthy baby girl…” Minhyuk pulled a photo from the file and slid it across the table.

Daehyun was quick to strain against the chains of the handcuffs as he grabbed the picture and examined it. The little girl in the photograph looked to be no older then 4, maybe even 5. His breath came in shaky gasps as he picked out the likeness between him and his half sister, the shared eye color and key facial structures.

“If your step father was able to hide how he abused you for years, he can do it again, easily. She’s never known what a father is supposed to be like… not like you did. She won’t know any better… she won’t know how to escape and get help. She won’t even realize that she needs to.”

Daehyun’s hands were shaking now as he put the picture down onto table, “What good will it do? They never had enough evidence before…”

“Daehyun, listen to yourself, what good will it do? If he beat you just for existing, what do you think he’ll do to her when she gets older, when she matures and is a pretty young girl.”

Daehyun looked like he was going to be sick as he looked down at the picture before looking up at Minhyuk. “I’m on my way to prison in case you’ve forgotten, what the hell can I do to stop him?!” He asked.

“I need you to sign a form, releasing your medical records so that they can be used in court.”

“You already have them though—“

“No… I had P.O hack the system and illegally make me a copy, there is a difference.” The picture was replaced by the form, along with a pen. “You won’t even have to testify. The medical records will be enough proof on your side, and we’ve already been in contact with your mother, she has agreed to testify in your place…”

The pen was shaky in Daehyun’s grasp, but he finally got himself to calm down just enough to sign his name upon the dotted line before he looked up at Minhyuk, “He’s just going to get angry… he’ll bull his way out of this too… He always does… he has too much power within the police station…”

Minhyuk smiled gently, “Yeah, well… our guns are bigger.” He said. He stood up, and motioned for Daehyun to do the same. He took the key from his pocket before unlocking the handcuffs from the table, “Sorry about this, it’d probably raise to many questions if I just let you stroll through the halls.” He said as Daehyun found his wrists once more handcuffed behind his back.

His sigh was gusty as he shrugged his shoulders in the most nonchalant way he could, pretending like none of this was bothering him. He was pretending like the new information hadn’t shocked him, as though the repressed memories of constant pain and hatred flooded his mind.

Minhyuk had been in the business much too long; noticing instantly the front Daehyun was putting up. He had already noticed the slight fear dilated pupils, and the way Daehyun’s hands still shook even in the hold of the handcuffs. His walking was a bit stiff and jerky as he tried to keep himself together.

He was quick to walk Daehyun through the halls, nodding to the guard that stood post at the end of the hall of cells that the rest of B.A.P were located in. He paused as he looked at the man, “Dude, you okay, you look a bit tired?”

The guard glared a bit at Minhyuk, “Oh yeah, peachy, because standing here doing nothing to occupy my time is exactly how I wanted to work overtime. I don’t even get a damn coffee break!”

Minhyuk offered the man a smile, “Well, I don’t have anything to do for the next… well… half hour I guess… go take a break, okay, I’ll watch your post till you get back.”

The guard grinned, “Gee, thanks… You know, I’m starting to understand why some people call you B-bomb, must be because you’re awesome.”

Minhyuk nodded a bit, trying to keep his smile on his lips and keep from rolling his eyes as the guard left the same way he and Daehyun had come. He tugged at Daehyun’s arm, leading him down the hallway and unlocking the door quickly before taking the handcuffs off of Daehyun.

“Thirty minutes, okay?” He said, before pulling the door shut behind him.

Yongguk looked up from where he had been reclined back in the sad excuse of a bed as Daehyun was locked into his cell. “… Daehyun, what’s wrong?” he asked quickly, getting up as the brunette began to sway on his feet, reality finally crashing around him.

He looked up at Yongguk, tears in his eyes as he tried his best to smile, “I have a sister, hyung.”

Yongguk nodded, leading Daehyun over to his bed as he sat him down before sitting next to him. He held Daehyun close, his arms wrapped around the brunette as his already fragile walls broke once more and the tears fell. He could tell that this time it was something more than the mere broken heart and bitter taste of having been used by Youngjae. He shushed Daehyun lightly, rubbing soothing circles on his back as he tried to calm him down, the warning of only having thirty minutes to comfort his dongsaeng before Daehyun was moved back into his own cell hanging over him.

As Minhyuk was walking back to the end of the hallway, a small noise caught his attention and he looked up, catching eyes with Himchan as he peered at him through the bars in his door.

“Thanks…”

Minhyuk smiled, nodding slowly, “It’s no problem… just… doing my job.”

Himchan nodded, disappearing from the bared window as he moved back to sit where ever he normal did within the cell.

Minhyuk sat down at the guard’s post, leaning back against the wall as he pulled out his cell phone and opening a blank text message, sending U-kwon a single sentence.

‘Another one taken care of.’

Chapter 61: First off, I'm really glad I read this story after it was completed, or it would've messed me up and hurt me way more because I wouldn't've known if there was a happy ending. Secondly, the fact that I KNEW there was going to be a happy ending and things were okay in the end but was still affected so much by the things that happened was crazy. Like, I knew things ended up well because I skimmed chapter 60 beforehand because I didn't want to end up reading such a long story just to be wrecked at the end because there wasn't a happy ending. But this story was just so greatly written, everything made sense, and at no point did I have the thought of anything being unnecessary. I felt what the characters were feeling, and every time good things were happening, I would just say to myself, "It's gonna hurt when the betrayal comes" (given that it was based off the One Shot MV).

I also like to think that at the marriage scene, it's just this weird conglomerate of gang members (like Nu'est and Infinite) and cops from Youngjae's old job that have set aside grudges for the happy day.
