Chapter 16

A Cracked Reflection

I’m warning you guys now. This chapter is 90% Daehyun back story flashback.

Youngjae pressed himself farther into the wall, holding back a giggle as he and Daehyun snuck across the ship, trying their best to stay out of sight of the other members of their small gang. Anytime one of the many girls aboard the ship would glance there way, both males would put fingers to their lips, shushing them and hurrying off before any questions could be asked.

“Oh my god, did you see her face!” Daehyun laughed as they collapsed into the V.I.P room they had been in previously, both dumping their highly sought after items onto the coffee table that had been pushed to the corner of the room.

“I know! I can’t tell if she wanted to laugh at us, or if she just thought we were crazy!” Youngjae said, helping Daehyun to pull the seat cushions off all of the furniture and toss them onto the ground side by side to create a large square in the center of the rearranged couch and chairs. Once they were pleased with the gridded cushions, Youngjae set to work placing a soft blanket over top of it to hide all of the dips and cracks of the uneven cushioning.

Meanwhile, Daehyun grabbed one of the silky white sheets that had taken them nearly half an hour to locate, tucking it carefully into the back edge of the leather couch before stretching it over top of where Youngjae was working, going around to tuck in the random spots around the edges that made contact with the scattered chairs. Daehyun unfolded the next sheet, draping it just at the edge of one of the exposed sides where the chairs didn’t quiet block out the view of underneath the top sheet. He repeated the process all the way around until the sheet-tent was fully constructed, the inside completely blocked from the outside world.

“Is it ready in there, Youngjae?”

“Yeah! Go ahead and grab the stuff!”

Daehyun laughed, picking up the bag that they had snatched from the kitchen and ducking under one of the white walls to join Youngjae in the tent. They carefully set up all of the snacks on one of the exposed seats of the chairs that surrounded them, creating a sort of snack shelf within their blanket fort. Youngjae inspected all of the food before giving it a nod of approval before scooting over to join Daehyun as the elder struggled once more with uncorking another wine bottle.

With a giggle at the elders frustrated attempts to open the bottle, Youngjae quickly took it from him, popping the cork once more with his knife before taking an extra large gulp.

“Yah! You just drank like, half of it in one go!” Daehyun complained, pouting as he took the wine bottle from Youngjae and settled down on the soft cushions with the other, taking a sip from the wine before passing the bottle back to Youngjae.

They continued like this until the bottle was well below halfway.

“Daehyun…”

“Hmm?”

“How did you end up in B.A.P?”

Daehyun paused, the edge of the wine bottle rested on his lips as he stared at Youngjae. Slowly, he lowered the bottle before setting it off to the side right where the cushioned ground ended. “It’s a long story…”

“… I think we have time, hyung…”

Daehyun couldn’t help but laugh a little as Youngjae ducked beneath the spare blanket they had dragged into the fort, snuggling up on the cushions like a little kid would in preparation for story time right before bed. Tugging at the covers, Daehyun slid under them with the younger, turning onto his side to face Youngjae.

“Are you sure you want to hear this?” Youngjae nodded quickly. “Okay…”

The rain was unforgiving, drenching almost everything in sight until colors blended into one soggy mess upon the grey scenery. At least, that was how the brown eyed teenager saw everything. Wrapping his arms tighter around his legs, trying to keep as much warmth in his core as possible, he continued to stare out as far as the heavy rain would allow him to see. His limbs felt nearly frozen in place as the chilly wind picked up, blowing right through his soaked clothes and causing a shiver to run down his spine.

He barely had the energy to jump as the bang of a door being thrown open nearby echoed around the empty streets.

“‘I buy the groceries every week’ he says. ‘I don’t care what the weather is like, we need food’ he says…” the voice was getting closer to where Daehyun was hiding in hopes of seeking some sort of shelter.

“‘You’re not made of sugar, a little rain won’t melt you’ he says—Yah! What do you think you’re doing?”

Daehyun’s head snapped up as the deep voiced male who had been talking to himself stopped directly in front of him, his arms crossed as he glared down at Daehyun. Despite the heavy raincoat the other was wearing, it was clear that he was already soaked through much like Daehyun was.

“N…N…Nothing…” Daehyun stuttered, his teeth chattering as he continued to stare up at the blurry figure that stood over him.

“Well, nothing looks an awful like loitering on our territory. Do you even know where you’re at?”

“N…N…No…” Daehyun unwound his arms from his legs, despite the aching pain his chilled muscles protested with. Using the wall for support, Daehyun pulled himself to his feet, trying his best to respectfully boy to the mysterious other male.

“Aish… When was the last time you ate, kid?”

“I… d…don’t… know…” Daehyun mumbled.

With a heavy sigh, the mysterious man grabbed Daehyun’s arm and began to drag him along.

“W…Wait… w...w…what are you…d…doing?” Daehyun asked, his teeth chattering harder than ever as the wind picked up around them.

“Aish, don’t freak out kid, I’m not some sort of ert or something… it’s just too cold out here for you to just wait for it to stop raining.”

Daehyun wasn’t sure why he was listening to the deep voiced stranger, but soon, he found himself following along willingly, hoping for just some sort of shelter from the rain.

The last thing he expected was to be drug into the winding hallways of a nearby warehouse, the distance screech of a raspy, not so deep voice, shouting that ‘there had better been a good reason that Yongguk had come back so early’. As they rounded the corner, Daehyun was met with the sight of a black haired male holding up a wooden spoon threateningly as who Daehyun now assumed was ‘Yongguk’ made his way farther into the room.

“So! Any particular reason why—who is that?”

Yongguk shrugged, looking back at the drenched brunette before turning back to the other male, “I didn’t ask.”

“Oh my—Yongguk! You can’t just pick up random people from the street and bring them back here!”

“Himchan, lower your voice please!”

Himchan turned to glare at the red head that sat at the kitchen table, “Yoseob hyung… seriously… Are you siding with Yongguk on this? He’s going to end up bringing a cop home! And then what?! Hmm?!”

Yoseob turned his gaze onto Yongguk, “Himchan does have a point… any particular reason you brought…” he glanced over to the still shivering brunette, raising an eyebrow in silent question.

“D…D…Daeh...hyun…” He managed to stutter out through his chattering teeth as he tried to shrink within himself as much as possible. He didn’t like the way the red head was staring at him, and frankly, ‘Himchan’ scared him. Despite that though, he had to admit it was nice to be out of the rain for once that day.

“Right… Is there any reason you brought Daehyun home with you?” Yoseob continued, smiling a little as he watched Yongguk shift nervously from one foot to the other.

“He was just sitting outside of the garage… Himchan… he doesn’t even remember the last time he ate…”

Instantly, Himchan’s eyes softened and before Daehyun could process what was going on, a pair of arms were wrapping around his still shaking torso, “Oh, you poor thing….” Just as instantly as he was hugged, the arms were removed as a hand pressed itself firmly to his forehead, “My god, you’re burning up… How long were you out in the rain for?”

“S…Since i…it s…started…” Daehyun watched as Himchan’s look of worried turned into surprise.

“But it started two nights ago!”

Daehyun shrugged lightly, trying not to pull away as Himchan continued to press his hands against his forehead and cheeks.

“Aish… C’mon, shower time, now, and then… change of clothes and dinner.” He said, taking Daehyun’s hand and dragging him through the winding hallways. Daehyun followed obediently, soon finding himself pulled through a cozy, albeit pink accented, room and pushed into bathroom. Himchan let go of his hand as he moved around quickly, starting up the hot water and laying out a clean towel before staring at Daehyun, “Aish… You might fit into something of Jonguppie’s… Just… take as long as you want in the shower, and I’ll go find something…”

He was surprised as Himchan quickly left the room, pulling the door shut behind him with a soft click. Without wasting a second, despite the idea of staying wet, Daehyun stripped of his cold, wet clothes and quickly stepped into the shower, shivering as the hot water pelted against his skin. Honestly, he couldn’t remember the last time he had taken a real shower. With a heavy sigh, he let his head fall forward as he simple just stood under the relaxing spray.

Daehyun barely registered the sound of the door opening as Himchan poked his head in, “Hey, I’m just going to set the clothes on the counter… Dinner will be done soon, okay?” Daehyun hummed softly in response, finally opening his eyes and pushing his hair back away from his face. Quickly, he studied all of the different products that littered the shelving in the shower before washing up and with a sigh of regret, shutting of the water.

After pulling on the clothes, wrinkling his nose at how they seemed to hang off of his too thin frame, Daehyun slowly exited the bathroom, keeping his body mostly hid behind the door as he slowly peaked out into the room. He nearly jumped a foot in the air as Himchan looked up from where he was sitting on his bed, “Hey, c’mon over here.”

Gulping a bit, Daehyun shuffled forward awkwardly, his heart racing as he slowly made his way to Himchan’s bed. He let out a small yelp as Himchan grabbed his wrist and pulled him down to sit on the bed. Daehyun kept his eyes shut tight, his hands in his lap as he waited for the worst, because after all, nobody was nice ‘just because’.

His eyes snapped open instantly as Himchan shifted to sit behind him, the loud whirl of a hairdryer flicking on filling his ears as Himchan dried his damp hair.

“You probably already have a cold, but… No sense in making it worse, right?” Himchan asked as he continued to run his fingers through Daehyun’s hair until he was satisfied. Turning off the hair dryer and dropping it to the floor next to the bed, Himchan hopped up and pulled Daehyun with him, “C’mon, the others are probably eating without us…”

Daehyun didn’t want to admit that he felt completely out of place as he was told to sit between a boy that looked no older than 13 and another that couldn’t have been much older than that himself.

Every few seconds, the younger of the two, who had introduced himself as Zelo, would reach over and push something from his own plate onto Daehyun’s claiming that ‘Robots didn’t eat that’. Not that Daehyun was one to complain. He hadn’t been lying when he told Yongguk that he didn’t remember when the last time he had eaten was, and frankly, despite not knowing if the food was even to be trusted, Daehyun found himself eating whatever was put on his plate.

Himchan laughed a little, “Look, Guk, I told you I was a good cook!”

“That or he’s just starving…”

Daehyun looked up through his bangs, swallowing what was in his mouth, “N…No… it’s actually really good…” he finally said, trying to attempt a smile.

The boy next to him sat up and looked at Daehyun with wide, innocent and childlike eyes, “You talk funny.” He said quickly.

“Jongup!” The three elders on the other side of the table scolded the younger, immediately stopping as a foreign sound filled the air.

Daehyun laughed, hiding his smile behind his hand as he ducked his head down. “I… it’s okay…” he finally said, looking up to the boy next to him, “I’m from Busan…”

“How did you end up all the way in Seoul?” Zelo asked, his eyes widening.

“U...uh…” The smile faded just as quickly as it had come and Daehyun soon found himself staring at his plate. Despite his stomach still wanting more of the food that lay in front of him, Daehyun couldn’t help but suddenly feel nauseated.

Himchan stood up quickly, “oh, look at the time… Jongup, Zelo… it’s time for you two to start getting ready for bed.”

As the two youngest began to whine as Himchan drug them out of the room, Yoseob  got up to clear the table for the most part. Daehyun was vaguely aware as he was moved from the kitchen and into a smaller room that was packed full of old and new couches alike, a few single, cushioned chairs shoved into the free spaces. A warm cup of tea was pressed into his hands as he was sat in one of the surprisingly comfortable chairs.

“Daehyun…  Why were you sitting outside in the rain?”

The brown haired boy finally looked up, staring at Yongguk. “Because I always do.” He replied carefully, waiting for the dreaded sentence that always followed.

“Do your parents know where you’re at?”

Knowing full well that the question was coming didn’t stop Daehyun from gripping his cup tightly as both anger and fear bubbled within his chest, the heat from the porcelain burning at his palm. “No.”

Daehyun could hear the older sigh, and he mentally prepared himself for a scolding, for the older to tell him not to worry his parents in such a way and that he needed to return home immediately. Just as he was getting ready to back track, to make some sort of excuse, Yongguk spoke first, “Okay…”

Wide eyes snapped up to meet Yongguk’s as Daehyun stared at the elder in confusion, “O…Okay?” he questioned, “Y…You’re not going to make me go back? Tell me that t…they’ll be worried about me?”

Yongguk shook his head, “Look, kid, you’re all the way on the other side of Korea, because I’m assuming your family is still in Busan…” He continued to keep eye contact with Daehyun as he spoke, “There’s a reason you ran so far away, and I’m assuming that is because you kept getting sent back. You don’t have to tell me what is going on, because it’s your life… but I just want you to know that until you know where you’re going, you’re staying here. I’m not going to have you sitting outside in the middle of monsoon season.”

Daehyun looked down at his cup, unable to match Yongguk’s gaze. He blinked hard, watching as the tea in his cup rippled from the single drop that landed into it. “Why are you being so nice to me?”

“Because… Everyone needs a hand every now and then…”

Youngjae stared up at Daehyun, he knew that his life had basically when he still lived under his parent’s roof, but he had never thought of running away to the extent that Daehyun had. “When did you find out that they were part of a gang?” He asked, once again surprised at the kindness that the members of B.A.P showed for one another despite every article of ‘evidence’ back at the agency showing just how cold hearted they were.

Daehyun laughed lightly, “Oh, I decided to go outside the next day because the sun had come out and wandered off a little too far into another gang’s territory because of the location of the park… Yoseob hyung showed up right as guns were being drawn… Once he brought me back, Himchan hyung went into overdrive Umma mode and was yelling at Yongguk and Yoseob hyung about how his ‘babies would never be safe as long as they kept playing their war games’.”

Youngjae couldn’t help but laugh along with Daehyun, snuggling farther beneath the covers as he stared up at the elder, “Well… It must have been hard, but… I’m glad you ran away from home.”

“Why is that?” Daehyun asked.

“Because I wouldn’t have gotten to meet you otherwise…” Youngjae admitted, a smile gracing his lips as his drunken mind pushed back the rational reminders that he shouldn’t be saying such things.

“I feel as though we would have met anyways…” Daehyun admitted, watching Youngjae as he scooted closer slowly. “I want to kiss you.”

A light pink stained Youngjae’s cheeks, “A… and why is that?”

“Because I’m drunk and the universe is telling me to.”

“Well, I’m also drunk… but the universe is telling me not to do something we might regret…” Youngjae whispered as he and Daehyun drew closer to one another. He could just feel the others breathe ghosting over his lips, before—

“YAH!! WHY THE HELL DID YOU TWO STEAL ALL OF THE BLANKETS?!”

Youngjae and Daehyun sprang apart, their hearts racing despite the almost intimate moment remaining hidden from Himchan because of the fort that still surrounded them. With a sigh, Daehyun pulled himself out from under the warm covers and peaked out of the doorway to the fort, “Because… wine tastes better when you build a blanket tent to drink it in, now go away.”

Woot! Apparently promising to wake up early tomorrow/today (aish, it's already 2.04am), after doing all of your chores before your parents got home earns you time on the computer. So I finished editing this chapter and... ta-dah~

Mostly a Daehyun centered chapter, but, it's important to understand where he came from to understand who he is... does this make sense? probably not yet, you'll understand (hopefully) when the time comes around~

For now, i made another oneshot, called Never to Young For Love , and it's a Baby!Bap fic with all teh fluffs. so... if I happened to get your feels all in a bunch, I'll have it uploaded sometime in the next few days.

Love you guys~

Chapter 61: First off, I'm really glad I read this story after it was completed, or it would've messed me up and hurt me way more because I wouldn't've known if there was a happy ending. Secondly, the fact that I KNEW there was going to be a happy ending and things were okay in the end but was still affected so much by the things that happened was crazy. Like, I knew things ended up well because I skimmed chapter 60 beforehand because I didn't want to end up reading such a long story just to be wrecked at the end because there wasn't a happy ending. But this story was just so greatly written, everything made sense, and at no point did I have the thought of anything being unnecessary. I felt what the characters were feeling, and every time good things were happening, I would just say to myself, "It's gonna hurt when the betrayal comes" (given that it was based off the One Shot MV).

I also like to think that at the marriage scene, it's just this weird conglomerate of gang members (like Nu'est and Infinite) and cops from Youngjae's old job that have set aside grudges for the happy day.
