Chapter 21

A Cracked Reflection

Youngjae found himself biting into the headrest after a while, the sharp leather taste filling his mouth as he tried to suppress the grunts from the annoying pain as the tattoo needle continued to press into his skin.

He couldn’t believe it. Not only was it actually happening, but, most of it was actually there. Youngjae had gotten a tattoo. A real, painfully real, tattoo for the sake of some stupid undercover mission.

“Youngjae… There is much better things to eat then that leather headrest.”

His eyes flicked up to the voice, narrowing in annoyance as Daehyun grinned stupidly back at him.

“YAH! Don’t you dare be biting my chair!”

At the sound of the annoyed voice behind him, Youngjae quickly pulled his teeth from the leather, hoping that he hadn’t left to bad of a mark. After all, Junhyung was the one with the tattoo needle, basically drawing upon his skin with the permanent ink. It only took one little slip and Youngjae would have a permanent mess up on his skin for the rest of his life.

Not that the tattoo wouldn’t be there that long too, a harsh reminder of his lies and the trust he had somehow earned with them. Youngjae couldn’t help but stare at the brunette that was still sitting cross legged on the floor in front of him, the same grin upon his face as he stared right back.

As misplaced as the trust was, the other boys had still accepted him. They had already gone through so much that should have left them unable to trust any other human being besides themselves, yet here they were. Smiling. Laughing. Caring.

Youngjae couldn’t explain it, but, somehow he found himself wanting to just call Jieun and tell her that he was done with it all, that he quit.

But the task force was counting on him; Jieun was counting on him. He had to see this through, right? After all, it was just a job.

“Do I have something on my face or something?”

Youngjae couldn’t help but genuinely smile as Daehyun rubbed at his face before pulling his hands back to examine his fingertips to see any of the foreign invisible mess that might have been there. “Yeah, it’s riiiight~” Youngjae reached out towards Daehyun, dragging out the syllable as his finger tips drew closer, and at the last second, he quickly reached up and messed up Daehyun’s hair, ruffling it rather violently, “There!”

“Yah!” Daehyun sprang backwards, hands flying to his hair while he pouted, “No cool, man. Not cool.”

Youngjae merely stuck his tongue out in reply as Daehyun pushed up from the floor and walked across the room to the mirror that was hanging upon the far wall. He used his finger tips to comb his hair back into place before adjusting his slightly popped collar.

“Why do you wear your collar like that anyways, Dae hyung?” Youngjae asked, resting his cheek against the headrest as he stared at Daehyun’s back as the elder continued to fix his appearance.

“I’ve tried to explain to him that it makes him look like some American frat boy… but, he doesn’t listen.”

Daehyun rolled his eyes, “Make fun of it all you want, hyung, but it looks cool.”

“No… not really.”

Daehyun pouted, glaring at Youngjae through the mirror, “Fine, I wear it like this because that idiot Joker didn’t put my tattoo far enough down for me to keep it hidden.”

“Yah! Respect your hyung.” Junhyung said, setting the tattoo gun to the side for a minute to wipe away the access ink from Youngjae’s skin and examining the work done so far. “Yo, Dae… go get me another coke.”

Daehyun raised an eyebrow, staring at Junhyung as he slowly shifted his weight onto one foot and cross his arms, “Are you still going through a case of those things a day?”

“… If I say no, will you just go get me one?”

“Yoseob hyung was right about you, we seriously need to put you in Coca-cola anonymous.” Daehyun said with a roll of his eyes as he turned away and left the room to presumably get Junhyung a coke.

Youngjae stared at the curtained doorway that Daehyun had disappeared through before turning to rest his opposite cheek against the headrest so he could look at Junhyung.

“Why do the hyungs keep calling you Joker?” He asked, watching as Junhyung smiled softly, looking down for a minute before looking back to Youngjae.

“It’s just a nickname… Yoseob gave it to me when we were kids… he hated the double hyung thing.”

Youngjae watched the elder as he arranged his things, mixing up the next color for the tattoo. “What was Yoseob like?” Youngjae suddenly blurted out, blushing deeply at the bluntness of the question.

Junhyung laughed lightly, leaning back in his chair, “Oh, he was great…” He said looking up at the ceiling with a bit of a sad smile. “He was always smiling for one… He just… saw happiness in everything.” Junhyung pulled off the black gloves, crossing the room and taking a frame off the wall before walking back over to Youngjae, “This was taken the last time I got to see the guys…” he said, holding out the picture.

Youngjae propped himself up onto this elbows, looking down at the picture. The difference in everyone’s style was a bit shocking to Youngjae, but he could still manage to pick out each and every one of them from Yongguk’s blonde and pink streaked hair that matched Zelo’s blonde and blue streaked hair to Himchan’s shorter, spiky black hair. Even Jongup’s hair was different, the style less extreme then its current cut. The only one in the group that seemed to not change at all was Daehyun. The brunette was standing off to the left of the group, his apparently infamous face mask covering his face. Youngjae could still tell that the other was smiling.

“Daehyun had told me he had black hair…” Youngjae said, pointing at the only unfamiliar face among the picture.

“Youngjae… Every time I saw the kid, his hair was different… He probably dyed it back to black when he got back to Korea…” Junhyung said as he took the picture back to put it back on the wall. “He liked to bleach it when we were kids… Then there was the phase of red hair… Even orange at one point…” Junhyung sighed as he looked up at the pictures on his wall, crossing his arms as he kept his back to Youngjae.

“You miss him.”

“Everyday…” Junhyung said, walking back over to flop into his chair as he pulled on a new pair of the black latex gloves, “I never got to meet that Zico bastard…” he said bitterly, “They were on their way to bring him over when-” Junhyung stopped mid sentence and shook his head quickly, “You seem like a good kid, Youngjae… Don’t do anything stupid to hurt the family… okay?”

Youngjae nodded slowly, resting his head against the headrest as Junhyung began to work on the tattoo once more. His throat felt tight, and his chest even more so as he stared over at the wall of framed photos.

He really didn’t want to do anything stupid per say. The more he spent time with the family, the more Youngjae realized just how truly broken they were. No matter how sheltered he had been while at the task force, Youngjae had seen his own fair share of criminal and thugs, but… something about these boys were different. They weren’t the paper copies that he had expected to be confronted with after reading the small file.

They were real, breathing and broken people, all carrying around a past that was infinitely heavier than a loaded gun. Youngjae couldn’t help but think back to how Zelo had said that Yongguk had made some stuff up to help Himchan… maybe the files that they had back at the office were all fake, the mere boastings of a scared 17 year old as he tried to help a friend in need.

“Oh my god, you have a whole fridge dedicated to coke, you addict!” Daehyun shouted loudly as he reentered the room, walking over and popping the top on the can before setting it down onto the table within Junhyung’s reach.

“Yeah yeah, shut it you Busan bunny… “

“Do you have what I need?”

“Yeah, but stop making it sound like I’m giving you drugs and just open the damned door already.”

The sigh was deep as the door closed and the sound of the chain scraping across metal could be faintly heard before it opened up once more and the shorter male was pulled quickly into the apartment. He adjusted his glasses before staring at the taller male, “It was a pain, so, you people had better be happy.”

“Just… tell me what you’ve got, okay?” The deep voiced male walked quickly across the room, flopping into a chair in the living room as he ran his fingers through his hair, the shorter followed at a much slower pace before sitting on the edge of the couch across from the other.

“Are you sure that I’m not going to get into trouble for this?”

“I’m positive, Taeil hyung.”

“Okay… so… after they showed up that night, I lost their trail about halfway through the city, and I’ve been trying to find it since. I thought I might have seen a glimpse about a week ago, but, by the time I got closer, he was gone.” Taeil set the file folder onto the coffee table, flipping it open and fanning out the photographs that were inside of it.

Instantly the other male leaned forward, grabbing the top most photo and staring at it. “Who are they?” he said, pointing to the others in the group.

The picture was surprisingly high quality despite having probably been taken from long distance range. The lens had focus on one member in particular, a brown head boy as he was in mid sentence, smiling at the blue and black haired boy next to him while he supported the weight of an obviously unconscious/sleeping blonde, whose head was rested on his shoulder, his arms looped lightly around the brunettes neck as he piggy backed the unconscious/sleeping male.

“Well, obviously, If I knew that, then you guys wouldn’t have sent Youngjae in there.”

“Sorry, hyung…”

“It’s alright, P.O… I understand your concern for your friend… just… tone down the questions okay.”

P.O nodded slowly, “Okay, okay… Where did they go anyways?” He smiled apologetically at the onslaught of another questions.

“They got onto a boat… I can’t start tracking them until they get back, but, yes, before you ask, I will keep you updated.” Taeil said, holding up his hand to silence P.O’s next question.

P.O smiled a little, “Thanks hyung…” he said, glancing down at the proof that his friend was at least still alive.

Omo, 2.44am. I'm getting later and later with these updates, aish~

Anyways, I ment to move on a bit more than this in this chapter, but... CrazyDreamer mentioned that Junhyung and Youngjae were her two biases and had dreamed of them interacting in a fanfiction, so... I wanted a little more between them (besides, speaking from experiance, my tattoo is actually tiny, but it still took me a good hour to get it done). So, we have a little more on Yoseob, and dundundun, P.O is back~ (kinda sorta)

*glances around* My actual dongsaeng joined AFF today... I'm not sure if she has made it this far yet (or is still reading my old oneshots) but... OPPA/UNNI LOVES YOU, DONGSAENG-AH~!! (not sure which name you'll be going by on here, tbh, so... text me later, neh?)

I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter~!

Cuddles,

Lynn

PS: If any of you guys want to talk, you can tweet me @LynnCuddles, I always have my phone on me, so, I'm quicker to respond there then i am here (depsite constantly checking AFF anyways, haha).

Chapter 61: First off, I'm really glad I read this story after it was completed, or it would've messed me up and hurt me way more because I wouldn't've known if there was a happy ending. Secondly, the fact that I KNEW there was going to be a happy ending and things were okay in the end but was still affected so much by the things that happened was crazy. Like, I knew things ended up well because I skimmed chapter 60 beforehand because I didn't want to end up reading such a long story just to be wrecked at the end because there wasn't a happy ending. But this story was just so greatly written, everything made sense, and at no point did I have the thought of anything being unnecessary. I felt what the characters were feeling, and every time good things were happening, I would just say to myself, "It's gonna hurt when the betrayal comes" (given that it was based off the One Shot MV).

I also like to think that at the marriage scene, it's just this weird conglomerate of gang members (like Nu'est and Infinite) and cops from Youngjae's old job that have set aside grudges for the happy day.
