Chapter 37

A Cracked Reflection

“Okay, so is everyone clear on the plan?” Yongguk asked as they all gathered at the side of the van as it remained parked in what had become their spot for this past week. Daehyun was sitting in the driver seat sideways, his legs hanging out the open door of the van.

“I’m to wait here, at five minutes ‘til, I will back out and circle the parking lot so that way when the clock strikes, I am in front of the exit.” He said.

“At exactly five minutes ‘til, I will complain that I don’t feel too well, and pass out in front of the nurses’ station away from Himchan’s room.” JB continued.

“At that point, I will open the elevator doors and hold them and tell anybody passing through that I am waiting on a nurse with a patient and ask them to take the next one.” Youngjae said.

“Zelo?”

“I will keep an eye on the door to make sure nobody is watching and let you know when the coast is clear.”

“And once we get the okay from Zelo, me and hyung will help Channie hyung out of the room and to the elevator where Jae hyung will be waiting and meet up with Daehyun hyung, and we will be gone without a trace.”

Yongguk nodded, “So everyone is clear on the plan?”

“Yes, hyung, we’ve gone over it for hours now. We’re running out of time now… We need to get into place…” Zelo said, grinning as Yongguk ran his hands through his hair.

“Okay, okay… yeah, let’s go…” He said, motioning for everyone to move inside, going in separate groups as to not attract attention.

Youngjae remained back for a minute, smiling at Daehyun as the others entered the hospital. “Don’t fall asleep at the wheel, Dae.” He said, shutting the door for Daehyun and leaning in the open window, pressing a quick kiss to Daehyun’s cheek. “See you in a bit.”

“Yah! Youngjae, be careful okay…”

Youngjae rolled his eyes, “I’m just going to hold open an elevator, babo.” He said, going into the hospital to get into place. He remained in the elevator until it grew close to time, and stopped at Himchan’s floor. He put his hand on the open door, keeping it from closing as he waited patiently. He looked down at his watch, counting down the last seconds. From down the hall, he could just barely hear the voices of the other nurses.

“JB, you don’t look to good. You’ve been working a lot of extra hours lately…”

“Oh my god, You’re burning up, JB, you need to sit down.”

“No, no… I’m fine… Just a bit... dizzy…”

“Please just sit down, JB-Oh my god…”

There was the sound of a heavy clatter, and Youngjae pressed himself back to hide within the elevator as the nurses on the floor rushed over to their fallen coworker. Even though he knew it wouldn’t change anything, he couldn’t help but hold his breath, the next thirty seconds seemingly dragging on forever until he finally heard the approaching footsteps to the elevator.

Leaning around the edge, he couldn’t help but smile as Yongguk and Jongup supported Himchan between them, Himchan’s good arm around Yongguk’s shoulder and Jongup’s arm around Himchan’s waist to keep him steady as he made his way into the elevator. Zelo brought up the rear, stepping in just as Youngjae removed his hand. The doors shut easily and the elevator descended to the ground floor where they got out. Zelo went first, checking to make sure the coast was clear to the front entrance as Yongguk and Jongup followed with Himchan. Youngjae lingered just a bit before rushing after them.

Just as planned, Daehyun had the van waiting for them, the side door sliding open before they even reached it to get Himchan into the back. Yongguk jumped into the front seat, and Daehyun was already driving before Jongup had even managed to get the side door shut all the way.

The silence was tense for several moments before Daehyun let out a breath of shaky laughter. “We did it… Oh my god… we did it.”

Himchan joined in after a few seconds, “We just left a hospital, it’s not like you guys had to break me out of a jail…” he said, settling back into the seat as he adjusted the sling his arm was still strapped into.

“It’s good to have you back with us though, hyung…” Youngjae said as he leaned over the back rest of the middle row, watching as Himchan made himself more comfortable, accepting Jongup’s offer of support and leaning against him.

Himchan smiled at Youngjae, “It’s good to have family that has such good connections…” He said, “Thank you… Dunno if I’ve said that yet…”

Youngjae smiled, resting his chin on his folded arms as he shook his head, “Don’t thank me, Himchan… I’m just glad that you’re okay…”

“We all are…” Yongguk said, turning in his seat and looking from Himchan, who was already starting to drift off, to Youngjae, “I know you probably don’t want to tell your friend too much, but… let him know if he ever has any troubles with anything, we’re here to help. We owe him…”

Youngjae smiled, nodding his head, “I’ll let JB know… the most he’ll ask for is probably a girlfriend though…”

Himchan smiled, his blinks slow, “Consider it done…” He mumbled, finally drifting off.

Himchan’s road to recovery was unfortunately slow, with quite a bit of headaches from the elder complaining about pain or the annoyance of his physical therapy, but none the less, each day he gained more strength and nearly a month after the surgery, Himchan was up and moving around like normal. He didn’t have to wear the sling as often and he was nearly completely off the pain medication as a whole, only taking very small doses each night after his PT so that he didn’t wake up too sore the next morning.

Currently, they were all gathered in the living room, Himchan sitting on the couch with Jongup on one side and Yongguk on the other. Zelo was sprawled out on the floor, leaning back against Yongguk’s legs and Daehyun and Youngjae were trying not to make it to obvious that they were trying to cuddle on the small loveseat that was next to the couch.

The movie that they had been watching together ended, and Yongguk ejected it, letting the TV go back to the basic channels before looking at Himchan, “Alright, time for bed mister…”

Himchan pouted, looking up at Yongguk, “Nah uh, I wanna watch more TV with you guys… I’m not a little kid, I don’t need to go to bed early…” He said, looking back to the TV. “Why are we watching the news anyways… let’s watch cartoons…”

Zelo leaned his head back into Yongguk’s lap, looking up at the leader, “Hyung~ Can we stay up and watch cartoons with Channie hyung?”

“Please~” Jongup asked, leaning around Himchan to look at Yongguk.

“Fine, I guess so, but when everyone is woken up in the morning, I better not hear complains about anybody being tired…” he said, looking around for where he set the remote.

“Wait! Don’t change the channel yet.” Daehyun said, suddenly sitting up straight and getting off the couch to kneel near the TV so he could hear better.

“-Witnesses say that not but a mere five minutes before the explosions, multiple shots could be hear within the building. We have not received a total body count yet, but as it stands, five have been confirmed dead.” The field reporter pressed her fingers to her ear as the newscaster back in the studio asked her a question.

“There is talk about this explosion, much like the last one, being gang related… Have you any word on that yet?”

The reporter nodded her head, “Yes, there are several rumors about this being part of an ongoing feud between some of the major players on the street. The rumor right now is that this is the work of B.A.P. Anything besides that, is only guess work.” She said.

“Hyung, why are they saying we did it-“ Jongup was cut off as a loud ringing echoed in the silence.

Himchan looked confused as he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket, looking down at the blocked number. He took a deep breath before clicking answer and putting it up to his ear. “Hello?”

Yongguk immediately took the phone from Himchan, turning it on speaker phone the second Himchan’s face paled. “Who is this?”

“Oh, I would assume this is… Yongguk? Right?”

“Who are you?”

There was light laughter on the other end of the phone, “That is not important. Why has our dearest Himchan gone so quite…? Is he still there?”

Himchan’s focus snapped to the phone as he tried to clear his throat, “I’m still here.” He said, keeping his voice level.

“Oh good. I really am sorry about my friend shooting you. You see, had things gone planned, you would have only had brain matter on you. I guess, unless the bullet went straight through Mr. Eli’s skull, then we would still be in this position.”

Himchan seemed to only pale more as his hand pressed over his mouth, his eyes wide as he stared at the device that Yongguk was still holding. Jongup was instantly to his feet, pulling Himchan up with him to get the elder out of the room. Yongguk tapped Zelo’s shoulder, twitching his head to the side to tell him to go with them.

Zelo nodded quickly, not even wanting to argue as he went over to help Jongup with a shell-shocked Himchan.

“I must have said something wrong, you are quite.”

Yongguk shook his head, “We are still here. How did you get this number?”

“Oh, do we have to play this game? How did you get this number? How do you know our names, what do you want? Who are you? It is so very boring.”

Yongguk’s eye seemed to twitch as he ground his jaw together, trying to remain calm, “Alright then, what should I be asking?”

“Nothing, there is nothing you need to know about us on that personal of a level. I just merely wanted to call to send my condolences about your friends.”

“What do you mean-“

“Oh here we go with that again. U-Kiss really did put up a good fight, pity though… they should have just stayed in the States and we wouldn’t have to have taken such… drastic measures.”

Daehyun’s eyes snapped to the television screen where the coverage on the explosion was still playing. He squinted down at the ticker line at the bottom, reading the basic facts about the explosion as they scrolled across the screen. “Damnit… That’s the building Nu’est gave back to U-Kiss…” he whispered, looking at Youngjae.

“Oh, very astute observation, Daehyun.” The voice on the line laughed again at the silence, “We know everything about you guys. This is not your fight. It would be in your best interest to leave town, and well, don’t come back. We’ll watch over the streets, don’t you worry.”

“We’re not going anywhere.” Yongguk growled, his grip on Himchan’s phone tight enough to almost break the protective plastic case that was on it.

“Oh really… So having to deal with the deaths of seven of your friends was not enough… maybe we should make it eight… I’m sure Mr. Jaebum will much appreciate the reward he gets for helping you.”

Daehyun grabbed Youngjae’s arms, holding him back as he lunged for the phone. The two silently fought on the floor, Daehyun constantly smothering his hand over Youngjae’s mouth to keep him from shouting anything to provoke the man on the other line.

“You had better leave him out of this. He did nothing wrong.”

“Oh, but what would be the fun in that, Yongguk?” There was another light string of laughter, “If you do what we say, he won’t get hurt. We’ll be in contact. Goodbye, B.A.P.”

The line clicked and the dial tone echoed in the near silent room. Daehyun had finally gotten Youngjae down, his back pinned to the ground and Daehyun’s hand firm over his mouth. He was looking up at Yongguk, ignoring Youngjae’s protests as he tried to push the elder off of him. “What are we going to do?” He asked.

Yongguk shook his head, dropping Himchan’s cell phone to the couch as he leaned back. “We’re going to find which ever son of a is behind this… and we’re going to kill them before they can kill anyone else.” He said.

Chapter 61: First off, I'm really glad I read this story after it was completed, or it would've messed me up and hurt me way more because I wouldn't've known if there was a happy ending. Secondly, the fact that I KNEW there was going to be a happy ending and things were okay in the end but was still affected so much by the things that happened was crazy. Like, I knew things ended up well because I skimmed chapter 60 beforehand because I didn't want to end up reading such a long story just to be wrecked at the end because there wasn't a happy ending. But this story was just so greatly written, everything made sense, and at no point did I have the thought of anything being unnecessary. I felt what the characters were feeling, and every time good things were happening, I would just say to myself, "It's gonna hurt when the betrayal comes" (given that it was based off the One Shot MV).

I also like to think that at the marriage scene, it's just this weird conglomerate of gang members (like Nu'est and Infinite) and cops from Youngjae's old job that have set aside grudges for the happy day.
