The Severed Ties

Backstage Romance

Falling in love is not an event, it’s a contiuous action. And I am perpetually falling in love with you.

30th October 2008

Luhan picked up his luggage from the baggage claim area and quickly made his way out of the airport. The fact that he was able to return to Beijing after spending 6 months overseas was just rejuvenating. He managed to visit Korea where he had always wanted to visit, he got casted on the streets and most importantly, he passed the audition. South Korea meant a lot to him now.

Pulling his luggage behind him, Luhan walked out to the arrival hall. He didn’t look around because he knew nobody would be here to pick him up. Qian Ya and his other friends were still on their exchange and Lao-gao was still not back from Korea. He returned early because of the important news he was holding. He couldn’t wait to tell his parents about it.

However, among the sea of crowd in the arrival hall, a familiar figure caught his eyes. The girl was peering around, craning her neck to catch a glimpse of the people coming out from the immigration area. When she couldn’t see anything, she pouted in defeat and Luhan chuckled to himself.

“Xue!” Luhan called her and the girl turned around immediately. When Bixue saw him, her eyes lit up and both of them ran towards one another instinctively. He reached out his arms to catch hold of the girl who was running towards him as she wrapped her arms around his firm waist.

“Luhan!” Bixue cried out happily when she saw him. This was how big of an impact he has on her. When she sees him, he doesn’t even have to speak. All he can do is smile, and it would make her day and that’s how she remembers her reasons for loving him.

“I was out long ago, didn’t you see me?” Luhan didn’t let go of her. Lately, he had been thinking about her more than he was willing to admit. 6 months away from his best friend was quite a torture.

Shaking her head, Bixue pulled away slightly to look at him. “I didn’t.”

“You’re still so silly.” Chuckling to himself, he pinched her nose, causing Bixue to yelp. Chen-bo, who was standing a distance away, saw the duo’s actions and he could only smile and look away. Till the time was right then he went forward to greet his Young Master and drove them back to the Lu’s mansion.

“Luhan.. are you sure about this?” Bixue looked up from the contract and asked the boy in the car with a shaky voice. She knew about him passing the audition, he told her on the phone a month back. However, when she read the contract, she could not believe it. It was a 10 year contract and that would only mean he would be away from her from 10 years. By then, would he still remember her?

“Yeah. I’m sure.” Luhan nodded his head firmly. “They would be offering me a house and some allowance as I train in Korea. It doesn’t seem that bad.”

Bixue looked at his assertive gaze, she didn’t know how to tell him not to go. Suddenly, she could feel the boy beside getting further and further away from her. A part of her was being selfish, she wanted him to stay. Another bigger part of her supported his decision because she really cares about him and his happiness matters more than hers. But she knows, the ultimate decision lies neither with Luhan nor her.

“Aren’t you staying for dinner?” Luhan asked the girl when they reached the Lu’s mansion.

Shaking her head, Bixue declined his offer. She didn’t want to interrupt the Lu family. The parents must have missed Luhan too.

Luhan understood her intentions and he instructed Chen-bo to send Bixue home. Waving her goodbye, he shouted. “Wait for my good news!”

-

The Lu family sat around the dining table, eating their dinner. Mrs Lu constantly added food to Luhan’s bowl which was piling up like a mountain.

“Ma! I have enough food. You should start eating too.” Luhan put a slice of meat into his mother’s bowl before taking another, “Pa, you too.”

“Looks like 6 months away from home made you grow up.” Mrs Lu patted her son’s head lovingly. He even requested to return home earlier than scheduled and it made her feel so touched that he was finally putting his family first.

“How was your exchange?” Mr Lu asked in a strict, stern voice. “Manage to learn about their culture?”

Nodding his head, Luhan put his chopsticks down on the table. He knew it was now or never so he took a deep breath before looking at his parents seriously. “I have something to announce.

“What is it?” Mrs Lu continued looking at her son with a loving smile.

“When I was in Seoul, I got casted by a talent company. They asked me to go for an audition and I passed it.”

“They offered me a contract and I want to sign with them.” Luhan looked at his parents and said confidently.

However, right when he finished his words, a loud banging on the wooden table was heard. Mr Lu was seething with anger as he glared at his son. He couldn’t believe he sent his son to Seoul to have him doing such things behind his back.

“What rubbish!” He bellowed.

“L..Luhan you must be joking right?” Mrs Lu looked at her husband worriedly before turning to her son. She knew how her husband is like and her hand held onto his arms beside her instantly as she turned to her son. “You.. you wanted to be a soccer player isn’t it?”

“But I want to be a singer more.” Luhan told his mother seriously and Mrs Lu couldn’t help but to tremble when she heard the seriousness in her son’s voice. From his eyes, she knew he had made up his mind but she couldn’t help but to beg him through her eyes to take back his words because her husband would never agree to his singer dream.

“Pa, Ma, I really want to sing.”

“Dream on!!” Mr Lu banged the table again and the helpers that were standing around knew that their master was very angry. Chen-bo, who was standing nearby signalled the other helpers to back away as they left the family alone in the dining area. “I will never agree to it!”

“You are a Chinese!! Not a Korean! How can you go overseas and work! I will never agree to let my son forgo his roots!”

“I will never forgo my roots! I will and always be a Chinese!” Luhan replied agitedly, not understanding how was this a problem to stopping him. “I am just going there to train and debut as a singer, I will not give up my Chinese identity, Pa!”

Shaking his head firmly, Mr Lu glared at his son. “Wake up from your singer dream! You are 18 Luhan! Not 8!”

“I am awake!” Luhan couldn’t help but to raise his voice at his father. He did not understand why was his father so stubborn with regards to his mentality. His father wants him to become someone useful to his country and by being a singer, he could become useful to China too. Pushing his chair back, Luhan stood up angrily. He saw no point in talking to his father anymore. His father wouldn’t agree to his dream; not even being a soccer player. “I will sign with them.”

“You dare!” Mr Lu stood up and Mrs Lu followed suit. She held onto her husband’s hand, afraid that he might hit Luhan in a moment of anger. Little did she expect that Luhan turned their back on them and walked out of the dining area and Mrs Lu vision went blurry right away.

“If you dare to step out of this house, don’t ever come back!”

“Lao-ye!” Mrs Lu cried out. “Luhan is still young! I’m sure he is just playful! You know how he is…”

“Pa, Ma, I’m sorry.” Luhan interrupted his mother without looking back. He knew his mother was crying but he didn’t have the courage to turn back. He didn’t want to let his parents see him crying and he didn’t want to see his mother’s tears. Or he would not be able to leave. “Please forgive me for being unfillial.”

With that, Luhan walked out of the Lu’s mansion with Mr Lu’s screaming and Mrs Lu’s crying ringing at the back of his ears.

“Leave! I don’t have a son like you! From now on, you are not my son!!”

“Luhan.. please don’t leave. Luhan…”

Till he reached the front porch of the Lu’s mansion then he dared to turn around. With his teary eyes, he looked at the white building with his heart that was tearing apart. He spent the past 18 years in this place and now, it has nothing to do with him anymore. Kneeling down, he apologized to his parents in his heart and wished them good health. He knew that was probably the last time he was ever going to see his parents and he cried harder.

“Young Master..” Chen-bo helped him up and wiped the boy’s tears. But when Luhan saw the man before him crying as well, he forced out a smile and wiped away his own tears.

“I am not your Young Master anymore Chen-bo.” Luhan said between his sobs. “There is no more Young Master in the Lu household.”

Shaking his head frantically, Chen-bo choked out. “You will and always be my Young Master.”

With a sad smile, Luhan told him. “My father wouldn’t be happy if you say that.”

“I mean.. Mr Lu.” Luhan corrected himself when he realized that he no longer had rights to call the man as his father anymore.

“Where do you want to go Young Master? I will send you there.” Chen-bo told him. They both knew it would probably be the last time they would ever see each other again but to the old man, he couldn’t bear to let the boy who was almost like his son to go just like that.

“Where do I want to go?” Luhan asked himself. He himself didn’t know where to go either. He is homeless now. Where else could he go? He really didn’t know.

“Young Mistress Zhang.” Chen-bo held the boy’s hands firmly when he suddenly remembered the girl. “Young Mistress Zhang is still waiting for you!”

“Bixue..” Luhan mumbled her name but Chen-bo had already dragged him towards the car. He knew if they stayed on further, he probably would never be able to send his Young Master off for the last time. The last thing he could do was to make sure the boy was safe and sound or he would never be able to live peacefully for the rest of his life.

“Luhan!” Bixue ran out of her house when the helpers informed that Luhan had arrived. She was growing worried when he didn’t call however his sudden appearance at her house gave her an uneasy feeling. And right when Luhan stepped out of the car with his reddened eyes and stoic expression, she could almost guessed what had happened.

“Luhan…” Taking a step nearer to the boy, Bixue hugged him tightly as she swallowed hard. She had never seen Luhan in this state and it made her panic. The boy had always been strong and cheerful. But now he was just crying in her arms, with his tears soaking her shirt. That moment, Luhan had became very emotional and vulnerable.

“My father.. disowned me.. I don’t have any parents now…”

Forcing her tears not to fall, Bixue knew she couldn’t cry. She had to do her best to take care of Luhan who always make others happy because he has no one to lean on when everyone else leans on him. She could no longer be selfish, she had to be strong for Luhan.

“You still have me.” Bixue hugged him tighter and her blinked away her tears. “No matter what happens, you will still have me.”

Chen-bo wiped his tears away and went inside the car. Stealing a last look at the

couple, he knew nobody will love his Young Master like she does. He was confident she would be the person who loves him the most for his entire life. He doesn’t believe that other people are capable of loving him like her. And he hopes that his young master would not ignore something like that because he had not opened up to anyone like had opened up to her. He had never let anyone seen him cry like this so he hopes he would stay with her. At least he would be safe.

Driving the car out of the driveway, Chen-bo didn’t stop till the Zhang’s mansion was out of sight. He then stopped abruptly, bawling his eyes out.

Luhan wasn’t the only who lost his parents.

He too, had also lost a son.

I know guys, it's sad. Many of you had been asking me why I tagged this story as fluff when its so sad. Well, just be patient. I assure you guys that there would be fluff. But before the fluff, I need to let you guys know about Bixue and Luhan's relationship. I don't like to rush my storyline and bam with rainbows and unicorns. Without all these tiny heartbreaking incident, there would be no impact when you guys read the fluffy parts.

Anyway, this is what my proofreader and I had been guessing all along. Luhan got thrown out of the house. There were rumours he was the only member who wasn't accompanied by any family members that the showcase in Beijing. I MAY be wrong, so Luhan fans please feel free to correct me. But yeah, this is our guessing.

Enjoy!
