“Hello sir, my name is Bang Yongguk.” I watched as my boyfriend formally greeted my father, giving him a deep bow as they shook each other’s hands. I couldn’t help but notice how my father’s eyes narrowed as he stared Yongguk down.
I could have sworn that there was something wrong but then ignored my gut when my mom called us over for dinner.

“Is it just me or is dad acting funny today?” I said, a frown slowly forming on my face as I leaned over to whisper to my mom’s ear. We just finished eating and are currently cleaning up while my father and Yongguk-- with a bit of pushing-- sat in the living room.
“No, he’s just pleased-- maybe too pleased. He can’t help that goofy grin on his face again.” my mom said with a chuckle as she started rinsing the dishes. I took out a wash cloth and started drying the dishes, taking small peeks at the living room every now and then to see my father talking and Yongguk obediently nodding his head and smiling once in a while.
“He never even acted this way when he met Himchan.” my sister said, rolling her eyes as she slumped on a chair, not doing anything to help us.
“I never quite got that. Himchan is such a sweetheart yet he never really got this pleased when they met.” my mother said with a confused shake of her head. I looked over to my sister and couldn’t help but smile when she knowingly rolled her eyes.
“But I swear you picked well with Yongguk, he’s hot.” she said, changing the subject before our mom starts praising the pretty Himchan. A smug smile immediately made its way up to my lips.
“I know, I always pick well.” I winked at her and turned when I heard my dad laugh-- more of cheer-- out loud, calling for the three of us.
The three of us rushed over to the living room to see what was going on but then found my dad patting Yongguk’s back-- quite strongly actually-- while Yongguk just looked up to me with his gummy smile.
“I knew I saw this boy somewhere before!” my dad said as he heaved a sigh, calming himself down. He shifted into a more comfortable position, my mom standing beside him and my sister taking her seat on the same couch as my dad. I decided to stick with Yongguk and sat myself in the arm of his chair, his arm immediately wrapping around my waist. I put my own arm around his shoulder and started fiddling with his right ear, waiting for my dad to continue.
“He’s the nephew of an old friend of mine! You remember the soldier you met last year?” he said, turning to my mom for verification.
“Oh~ Is he?” my mom asked, knowing my dad and his big interest in the army and in wars.
“Yes, yes.” my dad chuckled and leaned in to pat Yongguk’s shoulder once more.
“His grandfather was in the military too. We were talking about when he goes to the military next year.” he said almost proudly as if Yongguk was his own son. I stiffened up at the statement my dad made and swallowed the sudden lump that clogged my throat. We haven’t really talked about him going to the army next year. I know he wants to go and I want to support him but I just can’t help but worry.
I then felt a warm hand slide up the arm I had around his shoulder. I turned to Yongguk and saw him looking up at me with a small reassuring smile on his face, as he soothingly ran his hand up and down my arm. I smiled back at him and leaned my head on top of his, wrapping both my arms around his neck this time before turning to listen to my dad who was now talking about his time in the military in his younger days.

“You guys take care when you drive, okay?” my mom told me as she pulled me in for a hug and I nodded my head. The rest of the time was fun and i’m glad that Yongguk gets along well with my family.
“Yongguk is just perfect. Such a handsome and nice man, you should keep an eye out for him.” she said, turning to give the oblivious Yongguk-- who is still being surrounded by my dad and sister-- a once over. I raised my eyebrows at her and she just chuckled at me.
“What? He’s hot and your mom needs eye-candy once in a while.” she said, softly patting my cheek. I stared at her, dumbfounded with her words but she only chuckled and kissed my cheek before pushing me over to Yongguk who was already waiting out the door.
“Bye, dear.” she winked at me and I just shook my head at her before I felt Yongguk wrap an arm around my waist, making me smile.
The smile plastered on my face just grew bigger when he buried his face at the crook of my neck and started walking behind me with his hands on either side of my waist and his face still in between my neck and my shoulder.
“What is it?” I said, the smile never leaving my face. I put a hand on top of his head and stopped right before the car.
“Sorry.” he murmured and I frowned a bit.
“Hm? About what? You sound as if you did the most unforgivable thing.” I said and chuckled when he let out a groan. He then slid his hands up to my shoulders, making me turn to him fully.
“I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you about going to the army next year.” he said, looking up to me. I felt butterflies fluttering in my stomach, seeing how he cared enough to apologize about this not so small matter.
“You do know, you don’t have to apologize, right? I know you want to do this and I won’t stop you.” I said and he beamed happily at me.
“But” I started and he gave me all his attention “ you have to come back home safe and in one piece.” I said, narrowing my eyes at him.
“I mean, I don’t want you to lose a leg or go blind!” I said when he chuckled at me. He framed my face and pressed our lips together in a chaste kiss.
“I can’t go blind” he started, his lips lightly brushing mine “I wouldn’t be able to admire your beauty.” he said with a smile when I rolled my eyes at him. He let out a low laugh, sending chills down my spine before leaning back in for another kiss.
“So cheesy.” I said, feigning shiver as I went into his arms, content to be able to feel his warmth around me.
