chapter 7

The Empty Space for You

"Oh. You're awake?" Didi's gentle voice appeared at the side of his ears.

He slightly turned the other way and hugged his pillow tight, hoping that it was just a dream and he could have the luxury of spending a few more minutes lazing on his bed.

"Yoochun, it's already 4, you have to get up now." She tried once again, shaking his shoulders to the best of her ability.

"Mummy, just 5 more minutes." He grunted, squeezing his eyes tighter. It felt dry, heavy and itchy, but he could not pinpoint the reason why it was like that. He was about to lift his hand to rub his eyes, hoping that it could induce some tear production when his hands got caught.

"I ain't your mother and it's bad to rub your eyes." She replied with a happy tone in her voice. "Come on, rise and shine!"

There was no room for negotiation, he belatedly found out when he was viciously pulled up to a sitting position on his bed.

"Oh, Didi. Where is my mother?" He asked, obviously still half asleep.

"Probably still in her dreamland at her home." She replied. Seeing how he was still barely awake, she pulled out her phone and pulled him nearer to her, taking a quick snapshot.

"What are you doing?"

"Taking a proof shot to Manager Kang to let him know that i've woken you up successfully, and to come by at 4.30am sharp." She said, giggling to herself before she stood up to leave the room. "Go wash up quick. You're going to be late."

"Alright..." He mumbled, dragging his heavy body towards the bathroom.

It was then that he realised the reason behind his dry, heavy and itchy eyes.

"Didi! What the hell did you do to my face?!"

The trip towards the filming site was sullen, yet full of giggles. To be exact, it was two grinning staff and one sulky celebrity.

"Come on Yoochun, stop sulking." Kang said, trying to ease the tension but ended up laughing once again when he saw his reflection through the rear mirror.

"Try waking up with a full eye makeup before telling me that." He pouted, crossing his arms across his chest and looking in the opposite direction away from them.

Didi had earlier snuck into his room and had given him the full makeover. Smoky eyes, thick eyeliners, further opening his eyes bigger with the use of fake eyelashes even.

"You looked pretty good with elaborate makeup though. Maybe you should consider this look for your next photoshoot." She said seriously, her eyes focusing on the photo that she had taken earlier on.

"Didi, remind me not to ask you to wake me up." He grumbled, sitting further back into his seat and sulking.

"Don't worry, i don't use the same trick twice." She grinned. "But you can't help but admit that it is a neat wake up trick. You were wide awake after stepping into the bathroom."

"Please wake me in a normal way next. And by normal, i mean the usual 'Yoochun, it's time to wake up!' kind of morning call."

"Alright, just don't sulk anymore."

"Fine." He replied, looking away.

"In any case, my makeup skills are pretty good, don't you think so?" She grinned, sitting back in a relaxing mode.

She had been quite worried that she may have gone overboard with her prank, but seeing his gentle expression slipping back, she couldn't help but heave a sigh of relief.

"In any case, was that earlier prank a revenge for yesterday's incident?" He wondered aloud.

"I wonder..." She said, looking out of the window and stifled a yawn. She wasn't a morning person, and neither does she frequently wake up at such unearthly hours like 3.30am.

“Just eat your breakfast quietly and let me take a quick nap.” She grumbled. Feeling fatigued, she went to lean on the window.

“Breakfast?” He asked, looking up at her in anticipation like a small kid. “You prepared breakfast for me?”

Didi nodded, pointing to the paper bag beside her before handing it to him with a single hand. “There wasn’t much in the fridge so i could only manage to make sandwich. I hope you don’t mind something so simple.” She explained, turning a lazy eye to her side to check on the little boy.

Unlike what she had expected (perhaps a grumbling kid complaining about the amount of serving, or maybe having some complains about the type of food being prepared), she was faced with a grateful looking Yoochun.

“Thank you, i really appreciate that.” He thanked with an expression that screamed eternal gratefulness. His hands were still tightly wrapped around the box that contained the sandwiches, like a kid unwilling to let go of his precious lollipop.

“Well...” Didi cleared her voice awkwardly, looking away, “We’re going to reach soon, so you’d better eat up quickly.” She mumbled before shutting her eyelids to take a short nap.

‘Remember to stock up the kitchen’. She mentally remind herself. She heard a faint sound and opened one of her eyelids once again to find out the source of the sound. Yoochun was happily digging into his breakfast. His mood had instantly turned for the better just because he got to have his breakfast before his filming session.

“Get Yoochun to the filming studio first; i’ll be right over after i get the car parked.” Kang said, turning over to look at the both of them.

Didi nodded. “Where is it again?”

“I’ll lead the way.” Yoochun said, shutting his script booklet and removing his black framed spectacles before looking up. He had squeezed in some time right after his breakfast to do a last minute reading session by himself.

Kang shrugged. “Alright.”

Didi had her eyebrows raised. There was something different about the guy sitting beside her. She was so used to interacting with the offline mode Yoochun, that she couldn’t help but feel her heart leap for a bit when facing the serious mode Yoochun.

It was true that she had seen him at meetings on several occasions, but she was always outside the room, waiting for Gong Yoo when the actual meeting started. Photoshoots were not applicable as it was always a fun setting, hence Yoochun was always fooling around.

Damn. I got caught off guard. She chided herself, shaking her head to shake the mental image of the serious looking Yoochun in spectacles away.

“Come on, stop day dreaming here, we haven’t got all day.” Yoochun said, his eyes glinting under the fluorescent lights of the basement carpark. He then pushed open the door to the MPV, walking out of the car and turning back to look at her.

Like the gentleman he has always been, he raised his hand to shield the top area of the door opening to prevent Didi’s head from bumping into it accidently.

“Urm. Thanks.” She muttered, turning around to grab the bags from the car seat before shutting the door close. “Let’s go?” She asked excitedly, looking forward to checking out the legendary indoor filming location that she had seen on the drama that she had been catching.

Yes, she had been catching the drama that Yoochun was acting in.

She was stopped a few steps later.

“Why? Did you forget something?” She wondered, hastily scanning through the few bags that she had in her hands before glancing back at Yoochun. The latter shook his head with a smile, bent down to grab the bags in her hands and went on his way towards the lift lobby.

“Hey! Let me carry those bags!” She exclaimed nervously, looking at the direction where the MPV drove to before running towards Yoochun. “I’m your nanny!” She emphasised once again, trying to peel his fingers off the handles of the bags to get them back.

“No way!” He grinned, walking faster and faster, not wanting her to catch up.

“But, i’m your personal assistant!” She insisted, choosing to run instead to narrow the gap between them.

“But before your role as a nanny, or a personal assistant,” he said, flashing her his pearly white teeth as he lead Didi into the elevator with his free hand placed on her back, “You’re a female.”

'An illusion. He did not just glow, it was just the elevator lights.' She mumbled to herself with her hands on her chest, taking in deep breaths while trying to ease her palpating heartbeat.

She jumped, literally, when she heard his voice.

"Good morning!" He exclaimed with a wide grin, bowing politely at every staff that they passed by. They greeted him back with the same enthusiasm, some of whom had stopped him in his tracks and made a quick chit chat with.

He was very much loved by the entire crew, and it wasn't hard to tell.

Or rather, it would be weird if he wasn’t loved by them. He is that charming.

Along the way to the dressing room, he had introduced Didi to some of the staff he was closer with, asking them for a favour to treat her kindly since she was still new to her surroundings.

And she was truthfully grateful for that. For helping her break the ice.

"You're pretty popular." She casually commented, closing the door after her. She couldn’t help but notice the size of the room. ‘Weird, we just passed by a bigger room. Why didn’t he choose to use that?’

It then dawned upon her that he was being a gentleman by letting his acting partner have the bigger room since he is a male and her, a female.

‘You’re such a gentleman, aren’t you?’

"It's time you realise that," he chuckled, putting the bags down on a table. He proceeded to take the outfit that he was going to film the scene with from Didi's hand and went behind the curtains to change. "I told you so, didn't i?"

Didi stopped in her tracks. ‘Don’t tell me that he is able to read my mind?’ She stared into nothingness in shock. ‘Oh. He was replying to my question about him being popular.’ She realised after a while, ‘I should stop watching too much dramas.’ ‘

"Arrogant much?" She replied, sighing and placing the remaining bag together with the rest on the table. They had compromised earlier on in the lift, with Yoochun finally letting her carry one bag out of the three. The lightest one.

‘Another proof of him being a gentleman.’

Suddenly, she felt bad about playing that prank on him earlier in the morning. ‘But he was being his evil self!’ She tried reasoning, convincing herself that it was alright to play a prank on him once in awhile.

"He's always behaving like this, you'll get used to it." A lady, whom she recognised as the stylist said as she walked into the room.

"But i'm still the lovable Yoochun that everyone likes!" He said with a confident smirk, pulling the curtain away as he walked out, adjusting his outfit with ease. However, he had some difficulty with the cufflinks, causing him to fumble here and there while trying to clip them on.

Didi noticed, and walked up to him to help him out. She had zero difficulty slipping the cufflink on, and when she was done, she took a step back to examine his entire outfit.

"Well," She said, adjusting his collar and his tie, "Due to your lovable personality, i find myself able to fit in more easily. So, thanks?"
