YooHoo

What My Heart Tells Me To Do

I only saw you as a friend

I only thought you were cute

Don’t know why, I don’t know why

But I am getting attracted to you

When you comforted me when I was struggling

When you listened to my stories

Maybe you, I’m loving you

My heart moved little by little

How, how, how should I tell you?
Do you hear me that I’m falling in love
It’s only you in my head, I keep missing you

I guess I love you, yoo-hoo

I only see you, yoo-hoo

I want to meet you as a lover and not a friend

Please look at me, yoo-hoo

I can’t take it anymore, yoo-hoo

More than yesterday, more than today,
I will love you tomorrow, oh my love

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

I just wanna be your love

In order to look good for you

I bought clothes and went on a diet

Yes I do, oh yes I do

Do you know my heart?

What if I lose you?
What if you don’t like me?
Maybe you, I’m loving you

I have so many thoughts, I can’t fall asleep

How, how, how should I tell you?
Do you hear me that I’m falling in love
It’s only you in my head, I keep missing you

I guess I love you, yoo-hoo

I only see you, yoo-hoo

I want to meet you as a lover and not a friend

Please look at me, yoo-hoo

I can’t take it anymore, yoo-hoo

More than yesterday, more than today,
I will love you tomorrow, oh my love

I want to hold your hand

And walk on this street with you together

It’s only you, really, now I want to tell you

I mean it, really, please know my heart

I want to always protect you

By your side

I guess I love you, yoo-hoo

I only see you, yoo-hoo

I want to meet you as a lover and not a friend

Please look at me, yoo-hoo

I can’t take it anymore, yoo-hoo

More than yesterday, more than today,
I will love you tomorrow, oh my love

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

“Why can’t I use these lines?”

“You have to pay attention to how it’ll sound, not just how it looks like on paper.”

“So you’re saying I have no musicality?”

Yongguk turned his chair away from you, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. “That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just saying you need to take note of certain things…”

You leaned back against the table, noting that Himchan and Jongup, who were in the studio with Yongguk before you’d entered to ask for his opinions on your lyrics, were escaping into the recording room. Today was the day where you were going to finalize the lyrics for what could possibly be Secret’s title track for their next album. After weeks of working on the song, you were finally going to present your final product to your mentors and start recording the guide song. Much to your chagrin, Yongguk had brutally simplified a few of your phrases and even scratched some lines altogether in favor of catchy, nonsensical hooks.

“Jiwon hyung and Kibum hyung don’t like complicated lyrics,” Yongguk argued. “They’d cut these anyway.”

“I don’t see why it has to become ‘yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah’,” you argued back, pushing his chair aside so you could access his computer. “Listen to this part again and tell me why my lyrics don’t work.”

“I know what it sounds like,” he said impatiently. “But you’re not keeping in mind Secret’s style. Their concept is supposed to be cute and girly, and a song with a title like ‘YooHoo’ should be catchy and easy to sing along to. All these lyrics are unnecessary. Besides, you need pauses in the song for them to dance as a group.” He sighed, standing and reaching out to hold you by the waist, no doubt to move you away so you’d stop messing with his equipment. “Don’t get upset, babe, I’m just offering you my professional opinion from experience…”

You bristled and smacked his hands away. “Don’t touch me. Our relationship is strictly professional right now, Yongguk-ssi.”

He sighed again and moved back, but he must have accidentally pressed a button on the switchboard because Jongup’s voice suddenly flooded the room.

“…must be so tiring having a girlfriend. Why do Yongguk hyung and Hana noona constantly fight if they love each other?”

Both of you froze, turning to the glass window that showed Himchan and Jongup on the other side.

“What do you know?” Himchan chided. “That’s how they show their love for each other. If they stop getting angry at each other, it means they don’t care about each other anymore.”

“Do you and Hyosung noona fight a lot too?” Jongup asked.

Himchan flushed. “Different couples have different ways of expressing their love. Yongguk and Hana are not that good at expressing themselves, so they tend to get mad at each other a lot but Hyosung noona and I… You’ll understand when you get a girlfriend.”

You couldn’t help laughing as you leaned down to speak into the mic that was linked to the speakers in the recording room. “You guys know that we can hear you from out here, right?”

Both Himchan and Jongup turned their heads towards you quickly, breaking out into awkward smiles when they realized you’d been listening in on their conversation. Beside you, Yongguk watched with a bemused look on his face as the two of them came out of the recording room and joined you.

“It’s impolite to eavesdrop,” Himchan said pointedly to you the moment they were back in the room.

“So is talking about others behind their backs,” you pointed out, folding your arms.

“Are you guys done fighting?” Jongup asked tentatively, looking from you to Yongguk.

Yongguk shook his head. “We weren’t fighting. We were just having a professional… conflict of interests.”

“Really?” you asked, raising an eyebrow at him. “I thought we had to fight to assure everyone that we’re still in love.” Yongguk laughed and shook his head. Even this, you couldn’t agree on. Himchan was right; squabbling was your way of communicating with each other. The two of you were so different, it was impossible for there not to be disagreements, and you’d learnt the hard way that arguing about it was better than avoiding the problems. You looked at your watch. “It’s almost time for my meeting. Gotta go.”

You gathered your lyrics and sheet music from Yongguk’s workstation and barely made it out of the door before he followed you, folding you into his arms for a hug. Although you hadn’t expected it, you sank into his embrace, inhaling deeply his warm, comforting scent. You were still tensed after the argument you’d just had, but being in his arms relaxed you.

He pulled back slightly to look down at you. “So are you going to use my edits, or are you going to submit what you had originally?”

You looked down at his arms, which were encircling your waist, before looking back up at him playfully. “Are you asking from a professional standpoint or is this a personal question?”

Yongguk thought for a moment before a grin spread across his face. “I think I prefer our personal relationship way more than our professional one.”

You detached his arms from your body before sidling out of his reach. “Then I’m sorry but I can’t divulge this information. You’re going to have to wait until after the track is recorded.” You waved at him as you took off down the hallway, leaving him annoyed but just a little amused.

Days later, you sat in the recording studio, watching your song materialize.

As much as you’d hated to admit it, Yongguk was right, and your mentors had approved most of his edits. There were some parts where they disagreed with him and allowed you to keep your original lines, but you’d lost unanimously on the ‘yeah’s. Nevertheless, the song was your baby. You’d written the lyrics and contributed to Jiwon and Kibum’s composition of the song. Sure, you’d already written the lyrics to one of BAP’s songs, but it felt different this time since you were part of the song’s creation from start to end. It gave you such a rush watching the Secret girls record it that for the first time, you understood why Yongguk had given up everything he had to pursue his dream.

“Okay, lunch is here! Let’s take a break and continue when we’re done.”

Hyosung came out of the recording room as takeout arrived. They were recording individual parts, and today was Hyosung’s turn. You felt slightly awkward being around her in the wake of what you’d recently found out about her and your brother. However, from the moment she’d stepped into the studio, the songwriters and producers had swamped her with work and you hadn’t had a chance to be with her alone. As the bowls of jajangmyun were handed out, though, you somehow found yourself beside her. She smiled as she sat down next to you, holding a slightly different bowl. You peeked. She was having salad and chicken —diet food.

“Is that all you’re having for lunch?” you asked, starting the conversation.

She nodded, making a face. “I need to lose weight for our comeback. I’m so envious of you right now.”

You felt slightly guilty unwrapping your noodles in front of her. “Sorry.”

“I’m kidding,” she said quickly, grinning at you. “Don’t worry, I’m used to it. How can you eat whatever you want and still be so slim? I wish I had your body.”

You scoffed. “Are you kidding me? You’re the nation’s bagel girl and you want my body?”

“Why not? You’re so slim but you have curves in the right places,” Hyosung whined, causing you to feel slightly embarrassed. “It should be illegal.” She laughed, and you couldn’t help but laugh along at her candidness. She had this vibe that endeared her to everyone she spoke to, and you couldn’t help but get in by her charms. “Yongguk really knows how to pick ‘em.”

You blushed. “I could say the same about my brother.”

She smiled awkwardly at that comment. “I’m guessing he told you everything?”

“I kinda instigated him into blurting out some stuff,” you confessed sheepishly. “Don’t worry though, he didn’t say much and I fully respect your privacy. I won’t judge or anything. I mean, you’re both adults…”

Hyosung frowned. “I’m not proud of it, but it’s incredibly lonely in this industry. Being in a girl group, I haven’t even been able to date the past three years. At first it was just a convenient arrangement, you know, since we were such close friends. We were just helping each other relieve some stress.” You nearly choked on your noodles at this point and had to take a drink of water. “Oh, I’m sorry, you don’t really want to hear about your brother’s life, do you?” She laughed.

“I really don’t,” you agreed, giving her a wry smile.

She sighed. “I guess what I want to say is… I don’t know how our relationship has changed exactly other than the fact that we now attempt to go on dates, which adds an element of danger. As a girl, I obviously hoped that our arrangement would blossom into something romantic, but I don’t know if he confessed because he really likes me or if he thinks he’s supposed to…”

You cocked your head, confused. Was she trying to ask you for advice about your brother? It felt strange, since she was a famous idol and an underwear model and your brother was just… well, he was famous now, but he’d forever be an annoying dork to you. Sure, when you were in school, girls always tried to get you to pass him love letters and chocolates, but it felt weird to be sitting in front of Jeon Hyosung, watching her get nervous about your brother’s feelings towards her. How did he even manage to pull this off?

“What do you and Yongguk call each other? Do you have pet names?”

You blinked. You hadn’t even realized that the conversation had shifted in focus to you. “No,” you answered. “I call him ‘oppa’ sometimes but we just call each other ‘ya’, mostly.” Sometimes he called you ‘babe’, but he mostly did it when the two of you were alone, and you decided you weren’t going to share that with her unless you absolutely had to.

“I’m envious,” Hyosung said, much to your surprise. “You two are so close you’re like an old married couple. Do you know your brother still calls me ‘noona’? Even when we go out to eat, we just sit and eat politely. I just don’t feel like we’re a couple at all, other than in name. I wish I knew what he’s thinking.”

“I’m not very clued in about my oppa’s dating style,” you admitted. “But if he appears distant, don’t take it to mean that he doesn’t like you. He’s probably just being shy. In fact, I think he really likes you.”

Hyosung’s eyes lit up hopefully. “Really?”

You nodded. “Yeah. If you noticed, he’s got a huge ego. If you didn’t matter very much to him, he would have bragged to the boys about you long ago. But he actually kept this under wraps for a whole year! He must have been dying to tell someone but I’m guessing he really wanted to protect you.”

“Maybe he was embarrassed?”

“Come on, you’re Jeon Hyosung!” you reminded her. “You’re way out of his league!”

“Ya, your brother is an ulzzang!” She laughed and you couldn’t help laughing with her. There was something about how she laughed so comfortably, not bothering to cover or pretend to be demure, that was refreshing. Your mother suddenly popped into your head. She’d probably like Hyosung. You really hoped that Himchan wouldn’t blow it.

“If you feel uncomfortable, you should probably talk to him about it,” you said, getting serious. “What I learnt from years of experience is that the worst thing you can do when it comes to anything regarding two people, is to come to a conclusion by yourself.”

Hyosung nodded, and for a moment, appeared deep in thought. It was funny how you’d written the song that she was recording today, but she was actually living the emotions within it. It was fascinating. By the time she smiled at you again, Kibum was gesturing for both of you to finish up quickly, but from how upbeat she looked at that moment, you knew that the rest of the recording would be smooth-sailing.

“Thank you, Hana,” she said sincerely, holding your hand. “I’ll talk to him.” Both of you packed up your things to start the recording again, and she smiled another of her blinding smiles. “It’s a great song, by the way. It’s really Secret’s style. I can’t believe this is the first song you’re writing for us.”

“Thanks. I, uh, had a little help.”

Chapter 53: I'm glad I can always come back and read your BAP stories. This was the first one I ever read and it was such a good balance of drama and romance, plus angst. So glad to see Youngguk as a main character and it was so creative how you integrated BAP music and lyrics so it didn't seem like AU, just a behind the scenes of their real life that we don't ever know about. I hope you write more Youngguk or Daehyun stories in the future, (well actually any member)!
