Forced To Say I Do

*Hae Ri’s POV*

I picked up my bag on my bed ready to go out to see Baek oppa. After this little outing with Baek oppa, I’ve got to go grab a coffee with Jong In since I promised him yesterday. I let out a sigh. Today’s going to be one long day and I think I need to decide on who I really want to be with.

I glanced at the watch on my wrist. 5:47, it read. Oh crap! I’m going to be late if I keep getting caught in my thoughts. I’ve only got 13 minutes to left.

I rushed down the stairs, yelled out to my mum, telling her that I was leaving, and left the house.

I arrived at the ice-cream parlor with two minutes to spare. My eyes wandered around the small room trying to find someone who was wearing sunglasses. Well I assumed he was wearing sunglasses since he didn’t want to be flocked by screaming fan girls or gossip hungry reporters. He probably looked stupid considering it was dark outside right now. My eyes were immediately drawn to the table that had someone hiding behind an upside down menu. I examined his hands again. Yep, that was definitely him. I could recognize those long, slender fingers anywhere. I couldn’t help but giggle to myself. Sometimes I wonder what’s going through his head. I approached him slowly and quietly.

“Well you don’t look suspicious at all,” I whispered as I reached the table. He took a peak from the side of the menu before placing it down. And I assumed right – he was wearing sunglasses.  “Did you wait long?” I asked as I took a seat across from him.

“Only five minutes,” he smiled as he removed his glasses. It was that smile that had allured me into liking him in the beginning and after two years or so it still made me feel the same way. I can’t even begin to describe it; his smile just gave me an indescribable feeling.

“Are you ready to order?” the young waitress smiled. Aish, why do we always get the pretty waitresses? Baekhyun lifted his head to look at the girl and I think she almost fainted when she realised it was him.

“B-baekhyun? Baekhyun from EXO?” she asked. He flashed her his amazing smile that no one could resist. She ended up dropping the order forms on the floor. He bent down to help her pick them up and their hands had made contact at one point and she ended up staring at him for a minute or so. I cleared my throat to remind him that I was there. I folded my arms and looked away from him as he looked up at me.

“Uh I think we’ll order now,” he said to the waitress. “Ri, what did you want?”

“Nothing,” I sulked, still not making eye contact with him.

‘She’ll have a mixed berry sorbet with chocolate mousse on the side and I’ll have a mango ice cream with pikelets,” he ordered and handed the menus back to the waitress.

“What?” he questioned as our eyes met.

“You remembered,” I smiled. I thought he had forgotten about these things but it turns out I underestimated him.

“Of course I do. What kind of suitor would I be if I didn’t remember these things?” he joked.

“Who uses the word suitor these days?” I teased. This was what I loved about him; he always knew how to brighten up the mood – he always knew how to make me smile in any circumstance.

“What else do you remember?” I asked, hands supporting my chin and my eyes sparkling with curiosity. I was actually really curious about his answer to this question.

“Well let’s see, you pace a lot when you’re nervous, you find nail-biting a disgusting habit, when you’re stressed you tend to just cry, you’re a er for happy endings, you hate drinking milk and you are very awkward when someone compliments you because you don’t know how to respond,” he listed. I was taken aback; lost for words. I couldn’t comprehend how he managed to remember all those things. Even I couldn’t remember half those things until he had mentioned them.

“Did I miss something important? Why are you being silent?” he asked worriedly. Stupid. Looks like you don’t fully understand me yet.

“You surprised me, Byun Baekhyun,” I giggled lightly. Before he could respond the waitress was back with our orders.

“Enjoy,” the waitress smiled as she placed our desserts in front of us. I picked up the spoon on the side of the plate and dug it into the sorbet.

‘Mmmm….this is really good,” I complimented. He nodded in approval.

‘I haven’t had ice cream in ages,” he stated. “We should do this more often.” I suddenly fell quiet. I didn’t want him to get his hopes up too much just in case I don’t end up choosing him.

“What? Did I say something wrong?” he looked up. I shook my head in disagreement. “You really have to try this,” he held out the spoon with mango ice cream filled on it. I leaned closer so that he could feed me. Once the spoon went in, I realised he had fed me too much ice cream.

“Too much,” I complained as I tried to swallow it. The coldness was not helping at all. “You know my mouth isn’t as big as yours, right?” I frowned.

“Was it too much?”

“No, I actually wanted more,” I replied sarcastically and rolled my eyes.

“What? I’m so confused,” he scratched his head.

‘Don’t worry,” I groaned. “Gosh, you’re so clueless sometimes.”

Half an hour later and we were finally done eating. I can’t believe it actually took us that long to eat ice cream. Now I have to break the news to him.

“Hey…uh…oppa I kind of have to leave now,” I spoke nervously.

“I though you said you were free today?” he frowned.

“But I kind of promised Jong In I would go grab a coffee with him today.”

He sighed heavily. “When is this going to end, Ri?”

“I’m sorry. I’ll make a decision soon. Sorry to leave you hanging all the time,” I smiled apologetically. I really was sorry. I don’t mean to always leave in the middle. It just happens. ‘I’ll talk to you soon, oppa. Thanks for today,” I smiled and made my exit.

I dug inside my handbag, trying to search for my phone so that I could text Jong In to meet at the café near his company in fifteen minutes.

I stood over the edge of the road waving at every cab that passed, trying to catch their attention. After what felt like forever, there was finally a free cab. I told him the name of the café and asked him to drive as fast as possible. I didn’t want to keep Jong In waiting. For some unknown reason, there seemed to be more traffic on the road. I exhaled heavily. “Just my luck,” I mumbled to myself.

We literally stood in one spot for at least ten minutes and once we started to move again, we moved about a metre before stopping again. ‘Great, this is going to take all day,’ I thought to myself as I rested my head on the door of the car.

*Jong In’s POV *

‘I was definitely not going to make it in time to see Hae Ri,’ I thought as I raced down the stairs to get the tub of warm water for Tae Hee. Her stomach’s been hurting since this afternoon and she won’t tell me why - “it’s a girl thing,” she stated. I’ve never seen her in this much pain before. Her face cringes in pain everytime she shuffles around on the bed.

I carefully brought the tub upstairs to our room. Hopefully this will make her feel better. As I entered the room, I noticed she was clutching her stomach and her eyebrows were furrowed. I couldn’t help but feel worried and the worse bit was I couldn’t understand why she was in so much pain. If it were cramps then wouldn’t this happen every month?

I quickly pushed the sleeves of my shirt up and dumped the white towel into the tub of water. I squeezed all the water out and folded the towel into a rectangle. I pulled the blanket off of her, which probably annoyed her. “What are you doing?” she mumbled.

“Move your hands,” I ordered. She looked at me suspiciously before removing them reluctantly. I pulled up her shirt a bit to reveal her stomach, which surprised her and caused her to slap my hand away.

“Yah! What do you think you’re doing?” she yelled weakly.

“Just trust me. I’m not going to do anything to you,” I assured her. I gently placed the warm towel onto her stomach. “Does it feel better?”

“It feels good,” she mumbled. I placed my hand over her forehead to see if she was heating up but it felt normal. I guess it’ll be okay if I go out for a bit, right?

“Hey I’m going out for a bit. Call me if you need anything, okay?” I whispered to her. She murmured something too soft for me to hear.

“Where are you going?” she asked a little louder this time. I was reluctant to tell her where I was actually going but I guess it’s better to tell her the truth.

“Uhhh…I’m going out to see Hae Ri,” I replied hesitantly.

“Okay. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine,” she assured not very convincingly. I stared at her for a few seconds. You’ll be okay, right?

“Remember to call me if you need anything,” I reminded her as I grabbed my car keys and my wallet.

I glanced at the watch on my wrist as I ran down the stairs. I was already half an hour late.

*Hae Ri’s POV *

I sighed heavily as I sat at the table alone waiting for Jong In. I had arrived ten minutes late and I assumed he was already inside waiting for me but I’ve been sitting here for over half an hour and he still hadn’t arrived. He didn’t even text or call to say he was going to be late.

At that moment, my phone vibrated on the table. I quickly grabbed it hoping that Jong In had texted me but it was Baekhyun oppa.

I don’t mean to disturb your date with Jong In but just to let you know I had fun today :D, it read. I couldn’t help but giggle at his text. They were always so playful and cute and he always had to insert an emoticon in there somewhere.

“What are you smiling about all by yourself, Miss Lee?” a voice asked. I looked up to see a smiling Jong In in front of me.

“Nothing. Just reading a text,” I replied.

“Sorry I’m late,” he smiled apologetically. “Did you wait long?”

“Not that long. It was only forty five minutes,” I answered sarcastically. “Why were you late anyway?” I asked, hoping for a legitimate answer.

“Tae Hee had stomach pains so I had to take care of her and make sure she was fine before I left.” I zoned out right after he said Tae Hee had stomach pains. Don’t get me wrong I do feel worried about her but I have to admit I was feeling jealous.

“S-so how is she now?” I stuttered with a croaky voice.

“She was pretty stable when I left so hopefully she’s getting better as we speak,” he said with a hint of worry in his tone.

“Are you ready to order?” the waiter asked.

“Can I please get a cappuccino with two sugars. Thanks,” Jong In ordered.

“I’ll just have an orange juice. Thanks,” I smiled.

“You know we never got the chance to talk about that,” Jong in emphasised as the waiter walked away with out orders. My heart suddenly started beating more rapidly. He couldn’t be asking about that, could he?

“W-what are you referring to? I don’t understand,” I stuttered nervously.

“I think we both know pretty damn well what I’m talking about,” he hissed. I was speechless by the fact the he still wanted to know what happened to his child. “Look Ri, you know I’ve always had feelings for you but that doesn’t mean you should take it for granted. I still want to know what happened.”

I took in a deep breath. I guess it was the right time to tell him everything that had happened in the past year or so.

“Well what do you want to know? Just ask and I’ll answer them.”

“W-what happened to..to..our…child?” he asked half-heartedly.

“I aborted it.” I heard him let out a sigh.
“You know you could have kept it and we would be together right now but no, you chose to run away from your problems instead.”

“I’m sorry that night was a mistake, Jong In. I wasn’t ready for any of it,” I confessed. There was a short silence between us. Neither one of us knew what to say to the other.

The waiter suddenly broke the silence as he brought out our orders.

‘Please enjoy,” he smiled and went to wait another table.

“Drink,” I told a motionless Jong In. Before he could take a sip his phone began ringing. I watched his face go from emotionless to worried.

“Tae hee? Are you okay?” he almost screamed. “What’s wrong?” I sighed. Of course it was Tae Hee. It seems that she’s the only person that can change his mood in a split second.

“Okay. I’ll be home soon. Just hang in there,” he hung up. “Hey I need to get home to Tae Hee. I’ll see you soon, okay?” he simply told me and dashed out the door like he was running for his life. There was no hug, no kiss on the cheek, no nothing but a simple goodbye. My mind shifted to the memories of back then when we were separating from a date or whatever he usually ended it with a hug and as we gradually grew closer that hug turned into a kiss but today there was none of that. Could it be possible his heart had taken a 360-degree turn towards Tae Hee? I sighed as reality hit me…I was just too afraid to admit it.

*Jong In’s POV *

What the heck was I thinking when I went to go see Hae Ri today? How could I possibly leave Tae Hee in that condition?

“Aish,” I yelled as I let my anger out on the steering wheel. ‘Please let he be okay,” I mentally prayed.

As soon as I arrived home I dashed up the stairs to our room not even bothering to take off my shoes.

And what I saw once I’d opened the door had astonished me to the point where I couldn't even move. Tae Hee was on the floor with a puddle of blood surrounding her legs.
