When I was Sixteen:

"Is everything packed, honey?" Mom asked, her back facing me.

"Yes umma," I said as I ate a spoonful of cereals.

"Are you sure you don't need a ride to school?"

"No, appa. Kai and I will be just fine."

"If you insist.." Dad said, flipping through his newspaper.

"Honey, bring this too. You can eat this in the bus.." She said, packing a lot of kimbap.

"Isn't that a lot?" Dad said.

"Honey, you don't know how much your daughter eats. Kai would probably eat only one-eight of this." Mom chuckled.

"Seems like daddy needs to work more to provide more food for our princess." He said, smiling.

There was a buzz, coming from the door.

"I'll go get it." Mom said, rushing out to open the door.

"Come in, Kai." Few foot steps were heard before Mom and Kai appeared in the kitchen.

I quickly finished my food.

"Take a seat and have breakfast with them." Umma said, slightly dragging Kai to sit.

"It's okay, auntie. I already had breakfast at home."

"Don't keep Kai waiting, Krystal. Hurry up and finish your food."

"I'm.. Done." I said and stood up.

"I'll go get my bags," I said, leaving them in the room.

I ran up to my room, and got my trolly and backpack.

I dragged my trolly through out the flight of stairs.

"Honey, you're going to break either your trolly or the stairs." Umma said, waiting at the end of the stairs.

They walked us to the door. "Have fun, and don't forget to call us, okay?" Mom said.

"Kai, look after this princess." Dad said and opened the door.

"I love you mommy," I kissed umma, then appa, "Love you daddy.."

"We love you too, sweetheart.."

"Bye!" I said.

"Oh! Bye bye!" They waved back.

"Ah!" I looked up, "The weather guy said it'll be cloudy, but the sun is shining brightly!"

"That's better, isn't it?" He asked, grabbing the trolly from me.

"Well, yeah." I said. "It's good that our camp falls on this day."

"This day? Why?" He asked.

I stopped walking,

Is he serious?

"Yah. Kim Jongin.” He turned to me and smirked.

“You really think I’d forget?” He smacked my forehead, “Silly.” He said smiling.

Thump thump thump.

What the hell? Dear heart stop beating so loud. Why are you even beating like that?

“J-just making sure. We’re almost there, let’s hurry up.” I said and led the way.

“Yah Jung Sujeong.”

“Hurry up!” I said not daring to look at him.

“Yah! Wait for m-“

“Hi Kai!”

That annoying high pitched voice.

I turned a bit and found the annoying owner of the annoying voice.

"Uh.. Hi.” Stupid Kai.

I walked alone and left Kai there.

That girl has been hitting on Kai since 7th grade.

Yeah. She learned to flirt at an early age. What an achievement.

I bowed to my teacher and got on the bus.

I looked for an empty seat and sat.

“K-krystal, Hi! They kicked me off my seat.. Can I sit here?” She fixed her glasses and lowered her head.

“Of course..” I said smiling.

Aside from me, she’s another favorite of the bullies in our class.

I am lucky, I still have Kai to kick their butts for me. But for this girl, she’s alone and gets bullied most of the time.

I don’t know since when the bullies stopped making me cry.

My mom always told me I was a crybaby, so she can never imagine me withour her or appa. Luckily, Kai came and took my umma’s place in school.

I remember crying inside the janitor’s storage room.

I can’t even remember what made me cry that time, there were atleast a hundred times they made me cry.

And apparently, Kai found me in there and nagged me to go back to class.

Kai stopped my tears countless times, as countless as the times they made me cry.

Kai has been my savior since I met him.

“Why’d you leave me there?” Shocked, I looked at the seat beside me.

“Where is she?” I asked Kai who filled the poor girl’s seat.

“I made her transfer. This is my seat, afterall.”

“The girl’s been kicked off her seat atleast five times.” I said, clearly annoyed.

“Don’t worry Sujeong, I did not kick her.” He said, smiling.

I sighed.

“Since everyone’s here, we’ll kick off!” The swimming teacher said through his megaphone.

I took out my phone and wore my earphones.

Kai took the other from my ear.

I glared at him.

“What? We always share!” He said.

I sighed. What’s wrong with me?

Why am I so pissed?

I stared out the window.

And suddenly, a weight fell on my shoulder.

It was Kai’s head.

Thump thump thump thump.

It’s not like the first time Kai leaned on me.

It’s not even the first time he slept on my shoulder.

We even slept together when we were younger.

Why is my heart beating like this?

“Krystal-ah. Your heartbeat is running wild.” He spoke with his eyes closed.

“Get off.” I said.

“I’m sleepy, okay.”

“I’m going to eat.” I pushed his head away.

“Umma prepared lots of kimbap. And I’m going to finish all of it if you don’t wake up.”

“I’m going to tell auntie.” He said, finally opening his eyes and looking at me.

I opened the container.

Just then, a head popped out from the seat infront of us.

It’s the annoying girl. Cat ears on her head, pink lipstick on her lips.

“Do you want some chips, Kai?” She asked, completely ignoring my existence.

“Somehow, devil ears suit your better.” I suddenly blurted out.

Kai laughed loudly even clapping his hand.

I leaned back, Kai hits when he’s too happy.

“It’s that funny?” I said.

“Kai-ah! It’s not funny!” She said pouting.

This is too annoying for me to handle.

I ate my kimbap.

“So, do you like chips?” I heard her say, high-pitched.

“Not really, Krystal, do you like some?” Kai asked me.

I’m not eating anything from that girl.

I shrugged and ate my food.

“No thanks,” he said, showing his bright smile that showed twenty of his teeth.

“Oh, okay.” She slipped down her seat.

Out of all the bullies, that girl was one I could fight and compete with. I can say she’s ugly, right on her face.

She can’t do anything to me. She knows I’m Kai’s bestest (best wouldn’t be enough) friend.
