First Day

Dark Lake Academy

Ravi was actually pretty enthusiastic to get up the next morning. The idea of getting to learn about what he was? Well, he found that pretty darn exciting. Leaving his bedroom, he found Hongbin looked exactly how he felt.

“Ready for class?” Hongbin asked.

“For once, yeah,” he smiled. Admittedly, he still had to sit through all the regular classes before he could learn about his powers, but it was worth it.

“Your eyes changed,” Hongbin observed, “they’re blue now. Bright blue.”

“Shape shifters believe it’s a symbol for power,” their vampire roommate yawned, exiting his room, “a shifter’s eyes change a lot for the first year or so while their powers develop. Most of the time, it stops after that. But with powerful shifters like Sori noona, they keep changing at random.”

“Just how powerful is Sori?” Hongbin asked as the three made their way to their first class; math. Their fourth roommate, a fairy, had headed in early to meet with Minji.

“She’s one of the five strongest shifters on record,” the vampire – Daesung – explained, “There might be a few unregistered shifters who are stronger, but not many.”

“Unregistered?” Ravi asked.

“ISBIP keeps documents for every supernatural in the world,” Daesung told them, clearly proud of himself for knowing so much compared to them, “it’s just like the human governments keep track of all the people in their country. But some slip through the cracks. The unregistered supernaturals are generally in illegal gangs.”

“There are supernatural gangs?” Hongbin figured that it wasn’t too much of a stretch. Humans had gangs, why couldn’t supernaturals?

“Yeah,” Daesung nodded, “one of my old roommates is in one of them now. His brother got involved in one and he followed. Ran away in the middle of the night. A warlock buddy of mine thinks that’s why the ISBIP are here this year. They don’t want anyone else joining a gang.”

“Wait,” Hongbin blinked, remembering Sori’s warning about the ISBIP, “so the ISBIP are good guys?”

“Why would Sori warn us about them then?” Ravi added.

“Because the ISBIP can’t always be trusted,” they turned to find four boys making their way over to them.

“Hey!” Daesung smiled, “its D.O, Tao, Kai, and Sehun. I haven’t see you guys in a while.”

“You missed the morning meeting,” one of the four frowned at Daesung, “Xiumin hyung wants to talk to you later.”

“Sorry, Tao hyung,” Daesung bowed his head, “I’ll go find him now and apologize.” Daesung took off running, moving so fast he looked like a blur.

“I remember you two from the bus,” another of the four smiled. Ravi and Hongbin looked him over before realizing that this kid had been with Sori’s group. He was one of the Kim brothers – Jongin? Or was it Jongdae?

“I’m Huang Zitao,” the first boy – Tao – smiled, “I’m a vampire. Call me Tao, everyone does.”

“I’m Do Kyungsoo,” a shorter boy with large eyes smiled shyly, “but everyone calls me D.O. I’m a vampire, too.” Hadn’t Sori mentioned this kid yesterday?

“I’m Kim Jongin, but call my Kai,” Kai grinned, “I’m a werewolf. And this kid spacing out is Oh Sehun, he’s a necromancer.”

“Huh?” Sehun blinked at the sound of his name, “sorry, I was talking to a ghost.”

“Same one as yesterday?” Tao asked, “Did they give you anything new?”

“No,” Sehun sighed as they all – Ravi and Hongbin included – started walking to class again, “just the same warning as before. Death is coming.”

“Creepy,” Kai laughed slightly before turning serious, “do you think that’s why the ISBIP are here? They know something we don’t know?”

“Maybe you should try calling your grandfather,” D.O suggested, “maybe he would know something.”

“Can’t,” Sehun frowned, “grandfather’s crossed over, I can only call upon spirits that have unfinished business.”

“That’s too bad,” Tao sighed.

Ravi and Hongbin blindly followed the four, not understanding what they were talking about. All they understood was that Sehun had been talking to a ghost – in his head? Because they didn’t hear him say a word – and that the ghost had given him a warning of some kind.

“I never asked,” Kai said, turning around to face then, “what are you guys? And I totally forgot to ask your names, too. Sorry about that. Don’t tell the hyungs or noonas, they’ll sold me for being rude.”

“It’s fine,” Ravi shrugged, “I’m Kim Wonsik, but everyone calls me Ravi. I’m a shape shifter.”

“I’m Lee Hongbin,” Hongbin smiled slightly, “I’m a fairy.”

“Cool,” Tao grinned, “fae are awesome. What’s your gift? Luhan hyung’s gift it telekinesis.”

“Minji said I’m a healer,” Hongbin’s smile betrayed the unsureness he was feeling. He could believe that he was a healer, but just how far did his healing powers go? What would happen if he couldn’t activate them and someone needed to be healed? What of that someone was one of his friends?

“Don’t worry so much,” Tao fell into step with Hongbin, patting his shoulder lightly, “there are a couple other fae at school who can help you learn to use your gifts. You’ll master it in no time.”

“How did you know I was upset about that?” Hongbin asked.

“Vampires are good at stuff like that,” Kai sighed, “they can hear your heart beat, so they can know when you’re lying and when you’re scared and all of that. Tao’s really good at figuring out what someone’s feeling just by hearing their heartbeat.”

“Minji once said that he might be an empath,” Sehun added, “it’s rare for vampires to have such a gift, but not totally unheard of.”

“Some supernaturals can’t have certain gifts?” Ravi asked, his curiosity needed to be quenched and this was the perfect chance for that. He knew nothing of the supernatural world, the world he now called home, and he felt the need to learn all he could to correct this lacking of knowledge.

“Yeah,” Sehun nodded, “like vampires can’t have the gift of dreamscaping. Werewolves can’t use magic. Neither can see ghosts. Shape shifters can’t use magic or see ghosts . Just about anything else is up for grabs, though.”

“How do you know you have a gift?” Ravi wondered just what he could do. Well, other than changing into any animal he could think of.

“It just kind of develops on its own,” Tao shrugged, “you wake up one morning and BAM you’ve got the ability to do something you couldn’t the day before. Like a growth spurt only for your brain.”

“My gifts are seeing ghosts and raising the dead,” Sehun explained, “well, with enough practice I can. Kai’s gifts are strength, speed, hearing, and his wolf form. Tao and D.O also have great speed and strength. All three have a great sence of smell, too. But vampires can also drink blood, heal fast, and they have really long lives.”

“I though vampires were immortal,” Hongbin said, “That isn’t true?”

“Nope,” the two vampires replied.

“Humans got that wrong,” D.O explained, “We just age really slow.”

“Here we are,” Kai announced as they reached the door to their classroom, “math class.”

“Fun,” Ravi sighed.

“Oh, you’d be surprised just how fun the supernatural version of math can be,” Tao laughed, leading everyone to a set of six empty desks.

Turned out, Tao was right. The teacher, a fallen, is one of those teachers who can make even the most boring subject matter sound amazing and fun. Plus, she kept throwing out interesting facts about areas of math that supernaturals had helped create.

The next class, science, functioned in much the same way. The only difference was that the teacher gave off a creepy feel. After class, Kai explained that it was because the teacher, Mr. Jung, had once been an agent for the ISBIP. He had a reputation of being one heck of an agent, going on some of the deadliest missions the ISBIP had ever given out. After almost twenty years of being an agent, he quit and came to Dark Lake. As Kai saw it, the creepiness came from the fact that he smelled like a killer.

Eventually it was time for lunch. Ravi and Hongbin just about ran to the dining hall, clearly excited about getting to see their friends for the first time all day. Judging by the hugs they received from Hyuk, Ken, and N, they had been missed just as much.

A/N: personally, I think it’s kind of cute how Ravi’s trying to learn all he can about the supernatural world. Oh! And if you guys have any questions yourselves, just ask. Unless it comes up later in the story, I’ll answer (if it does come up later, I’ll say as much when I respond to your question)
