Losing Him

99 Paper Cranes (Completed)
Two months later...

Kit stood in front of Calvin's locker. In her hand, she was holding a paper crane, and on the other hand, she was holding her love note. Although Hannah have already left, she couldn't help but continue leaving the paper cranes and love notes for him. For her, it's her only way to express her love for him. She inserted the note inside his locker, and then hung the paper crane to the locker's handle. She looked at it for a while, and then smiled to herself. “If you keep on doing that, Calvin will eventually find out that you are the paper crane girl...” she heard someone say. She looked back, and saw Danson standing behind her. “He won't catch me. I know his schedule, and I know when to leave the paper cranes.” she said. “But still, you should be careful...” he reminded her. Kit smiled at him, and then she sighed. “I don't know... there's a part of me wanting him to know that I am the one that he was looking for, so that he could finally understand... but a big part of me wouldn't want that to happen because I'm scared with how he will react...” Kit said. Danson gave her a warm smile, and then he held her hand. “Come on... the bell's gonna ring anytime. If he find you standing here with that paper crane on his locker, he would get suspicious.” he said. Kit smiled and nodded her head. Then, the two of them walked away from Calvin's locker.

A few minutes later, the bell rang, and the hallway was once again was filled with students. Calvin rushed to his locker, to find another paper crane hanging on it. Calvin could only sigh as he took it. He placed it inside, and then opened his locker. On top of his books, he saw a small yellow note. He took it, and read it's contents.

“Sometimes your nearness takes my breath away; and all the things I want to say can find no voice. Then, in silence, I can only hope my eyes will speak my heart”

Calvin just shook his head as he stuff the note into his planner. The day that Hannah told her that there is another paper crane girl aside from her, he felt tired with the search. He promised Hannah before she left that he will continue to let this paper crane girl to love him secretly, but somehow, he's getting tired with what she's doing. He decided not to find her, because it's no use anyway. It's tiring to find someone who doesn't want to be found. And so, he decided to just keep the paper crane and the notes, who knows those might be of use to him in the future.

“Cal...” he heard someone call. He looked back, and saw Joy walking up to him. He smiled at her. “Hey...” he said as he held her hand. “We don't have classes today. It's your vacant period, right?” she asked. Calvin nodded his head. “Great! So can we have an early lunch at the cafe? I'm really hungry...” she said. “Don't tell me you skipped your breakfast again?” he asked. Joy smiled and shook her head. “Of course not! I ate breakfast, but I was in a hurry that's why I wasn't able to eat a lot.” she explained. “You woke up late?” he asked. Joy nodded her head. “And it's your fault. I told you to put down the phone already but you keep on telling me those funny stories!” Joy said. Calvin just laughed at what she said. After Joy and Jiro broke up, the two of them have gotten really close. Calvin was the one whom she cried to during that phase, and he listened to her and cheered her up. Calvin, on the other hand, was happy that he was able to do those things for her. It seems to him that Joy have already moved on because of all the things he have done.

“OK, let's have an early lunch. My treat.” he said. Joy pouted at him and shook his head. “You're always treating me out. It should be my turn this time!” she said. Calvin just shook his head. “Not today. Maybe next time.” he said. Then, Joy turned to smile. “Promise?” she said. Calvin nodded his head. “Promise.”

--

On their way to the cafe, Joy and Calvin saw Kit and Danson. “Kit! Danson!” Joy called. The two looked back, and they saw them walking towards them. As Kit looked down, she saw Calvin holding Joy's hand. In that instant, she felt the smile on her face slowly disappeared. Danson saw the change in her expression. He put his arms around her, and when she looked up at him, he smiled. “Smile... you'll only make him think that there's something wrong with you...” he said. Kit smiled and nodded her head. “Hey... are you guys going to have lunch?” Joy asked. The two nodded their head. “We have a big English test coming up this afternoon, so we have to fill up before reviewing.” Danson said. “Hey, we're going to have lunch too. Why don't you join us? My treat.” Calvin said. Kit gave Calvin confused look. “Wei... it's so unlikely of you to treat us for lunch. You're a very thrifty and cheap guy as far as I can remember...” she said. She walked towards him and looked at him from head to foot, and then she crossed her arms. “Who are you and what have you done to my best friend?” she asked. Joy and Calvin could not help but laugh at her reaction. “I am still Calvin Chen, and yes, for a change, I'm treating you guys for lunch, OK?” he said.”Fine..” Kit said. “I'm glad you are treating us out for lunch because I'm really starving and I will order a lot of food.” she said to him. Before Calvin could react, she turned her back on him and held to Danson's arm. Together, they went inside the cafe. “Good thing I'm loaded...” Calvin said in a worried tone. Joy just laughed at him. “Kit and I are the same. When we're starving and really hungry, we eat a lot, not minding our figures after that.” Joy said. “Well,” Calvin said as he put his arm around her. “I like girls who eats a lot, not minding if they'll get fat or not...” he said. Again, Joy just laughed at him. “I think we should go inside. I know Kit easily gets impatient when she's hungry.” she said. Calvin smiled and nodded his head, and then they followed the two inside the cafe.

Inside the cafe, Kit and Danson sat at their favorite corner while they were waiting for Joy and Calvin, who were ordering their food at the counter. After a while, Joy and Calvin came, holding the tray in their food. “Here's our food!” Joy said as he put the tray on the table. “Goody! I'm starving!” Kit said. She took one of the burgers on the tray, then she looked at Calvin. She saw him open the box of pizza, and put a slice of pizza on her plate. As he looked at Joy, he saw her smiling at him. “Thank you...” she said. Kit just sighed sadly as she watched them. She lowered her head, as she opened the wrapper of her hamburger. Then, she noticed that they ordered hot fudge sundaes. “Wei... where's my caramel sundae?” she asked. Calvin gave her a confused look. “Don't you like hot fudge?” he asked. Then, she looked at him sadly. “Joy liked hot fudge sundae, so I thought you wouldn't mind having a hot fudge sundae as well...” he said. “But you know that I always order caramel since I prefer it, right?” she said in a low voice. Danson could already see that she was upset about it. He looked at her, and then held her hand. “Don't worry, I'll get you a caramel sundae, OK?” he said, smiling at her. Kit looked at her and shook her head. “It... It's OK...” she said, trying to smile. “I like hot fudge as well...” she said as she took one sundae. “Kit... I'm really sorry... it slipped my mind that you prefer caramel sundae over hot fudge...” Joy said in an apologetic tone. She tried to smile at Joy. “It's OK. I guess it's better if I have hot fudge once in a while...” she said. Then she laughed nervously. Then, Calvin smiled at her, then turned to Joy, totally ignoring her.

All throughout the lunch, Kit just watched as Calvin and Joy happily chatted. It's like they're caught up in their own little world, and that they even bother that she and Danson is with them. For her, it seems that they have this mutual understanding, because as they chatted, it seems that only the two of them could understand what they were talking about. She just listened to them as they chatted. It seems that Calvin have shown another side him to Joy, that he have now shown to anyone, especially her. It seems that Calvin have told her his innermost secrets, that only she could know. It also seems that Joy have known Calvin until the very last details. From time to time, Joy would turn to her and tell her those things that she have discovered about Calvin that she have known a long time ago – like him telling really corny and cold jokes, the most embarrassing things that happened to him during childhood, his habit of humming his favorite nursery rhyme when he's really nervous – those little things. She felt like he's slowly replacing her with Joy, and she felt jealous because of that.

“Did you know that I've heard him snore the other night!” Joy said as she turned to him. Kit gave her a confused look. “What do you mean?” she asked. Joy smiled at her. “We were talking over the phone Saturday night. I already told him to get some sleep, but he insisted on talking to me, then before we knew it, we already fell asleep and forgot to put the phone down. The next day when I woke up, I picked up the phone and I heard him snoring really loud!” she said. Kit was surprised at what she said. “Y-you talked to Joy the whole night?” she asked as she turned to Calvin. “Yeah... you were out last Saturday, so I decided to annoy Joy.” he said. Then, she turned her eyes away from him. “I... I wasn't out last Saturday...” she said in a low voice. Joy gave her a confused look. “You weren't? But Calvin told me -”
“Actually we were just playing video games with her younger sister last Saturday, right, Kit?” Danson said as he smiled at Kit. Then, she felt him squeeze her head. “Y-yeah... we did...” she said. It's partly true, as Danson stopped by last Saturday, and they hang out at their house and played video games. But he didn't stay long, as he's going to meet up with Chun. “That's why I wasn't able to reach you last Saturday...” she thought. Suddenly, Calvin felt guilty for lying. He made Kit an excuse so that he could talk to Joy on the phone. “Kit...” he said in a low voice. As he looked at her, he saw her smiling. “Anyway, It's good to know that you two are really getting close. At least someone would share my agony of being Calvin Chen's best friend.” she said as she laughed nervously. She looked at Joy, and saw her laughing with her. “Yeah, you're right. Don't worry, let me share your sorrow.” she said. Then, Calvin gave Joy a smirk, then began to tickle her at her sides. “Aiyo! Stop it!” she heard Joy said. She could only watch them. She was faking a smile all this time, as seeing them together only breaks her heart.

--

“Have you seen the way he looked at her...” Kit said to Danson. They were at the park near Kit's house, sitting on the bench. “Have you seen the way he smiled when she smiles at her? How his eyes sparkles as he looks at her?” she asked again. Danson just nodded his head. He could feel her heartache, and as much as he wanted to take that away, there's nothing he could do right now but listen to her. “I could see that Joy has started to fall in love with him... and it's scaring me, you know. It's scaring me because... because I felt like losing me... like anytime soon, Joy's going to take my place. She already know every little things about him. Even those things that only I know about him...” she said. “But there are other things that Joy doesn't know about him, that only you could understand...” Danson said. Kit let out a bitter smile and shook her head. “I doubt it, Danson. I've never seen Calvin so in love like this, that he even showed to her the side of him that only I have seen...” she said. “You don't have to be scared of anything, Kit. Be happy for Calvin because he's slowly getting the love of the girl of his dreams. Most of all, we know Joy. If she became his girlfriend, we know that she wouldn't hurt her...” Danson said. Kit just nodded her head. “I know... but there's something that I'm scared of...” she said. Then, she looked at him. “I'm starting to get scared of myself, Danson. Each day that I am with him, I keep on falling in love with him. How can you stay friends with someone if every time you look at them, it makes you want them even more?” she said. Danson closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “I... I know how it feels like...” he said in a low voice. Then, he slowly opened his eyes, and looked at her. “And I also know what it's like to be hurt when you see the one you love suffer with her heartache.... It hurts me as much as it hurts you. I can't bear seeing you being hurt because of him...” he said.

She could understand what he was trying to say. Somehow, she felt guilty because she's all about the pain she is feeling right now, that she even bothered with his feelings. Kit looked away from him. “I'm sorry, Danson.... I'm sorry if I'm being selfish...” she said. “Maybe it's about time that you let go of what you feel for me. You don't have to feel hurt for me, to feel my pain. I didn't ask you to...” she said. Danson just smiled as he cupped her cheek in her palm. “But I want to... because I love you....” he said. She looked into his eyes, and then she felt the tears rolling down her cheek. “Danson... you have to understand that I could only love Calvin. Maybe, one day, if I wake up from this madness... maybe then I could give you that chance...” she said. Danson just nodded his head. “I will wait for that day, but for now, let me share your pain. The last thing I wan is to see you sad. If I can't take away all the hurt you're feeling, then let me be with you while you're in pain.” he said. He put his arm around her, and then let her head rest, as the tears began to fall from her eyes.

Jiro paused as he watched Joy walked by the hall. She was not alone, as Calvin is with her. He could only look at her from afar. He saw her smile and laugh at something that Calvin told her. “Guess it's finally over...” he thought. He let out a faint smile as he shook his head. He could see that Joy is happy now, more happier that the time that they were together. As much as he wanted her and misses her, he just couldn't bring himself to ask her back in his life. He's not over Tin, he's doing his best to forget her and he knows that he's succeeding, but even if he have already forgotten his love for Tin, he knows that it's no use as he have already lost Joy. The worst part is, he lost Joy to one of his closest friends.

“Watching her just won't make her love you again.” he heard someone say. He looked back and saw Chun walking towards her. Jiro just smiled at his friend. “I'm not asking for her to love me again. I just wish for her happiness... and I can see that she have found it with someone else.” he said. Chun sighed, and then folded his arms as he looked sternly at him. “Well, your eyes tell otherwise. I can see that you still love her and want her back, but something's holding you back. Is it because of Tin?” he asked. Jiro shook his head. “Honestly, I have slowly let go of Tin. Which is good... what I have to do know to is to learn to let go of Joy now.” he said. Chun smiled and nodded his head. “So, Tin is finally out of the picture, huh?” he asked. Jiro nodded his head. “'I'm getting there... I have realized that Tin will only be but a happy memory of my past.”
“And Joy?”
“She will always the girl I will love. Maybe one day I will soon forget about her, but I doubt if it would take me that soon.”

Chun gave him a smile as he put his arm around his shoulder. “If you really love Joy, you will fight for what you feel. You'll prove it to her, even if it means that you have to fight with Calvin for her love. If you just give up easily on her, then it only means that you don't love her enough to want her back.” he said. Jiro let out a sigh after hearing what his friend said. “It's different now, Chun...” he said. “But you don't know what it feels... It feels horrible to see your lost love walk past you with another guy,
and it's the worst feeling when you know that you made a mistake in letting her go.”

Joy was waiting for Calvin after their soccer practice. She was sitting at the bleacher, reading a book, when Calvin came. “Joy!” he called as he ran towards her. Joy looked at him and smiled. “Hey, Calvin!” she said. Calvin smiled at her as he sat beside her. “I have a surprise for you...” he said. Then, he showed her his two closed fists. “But first, you have to guess where it is.” he said. Joy gave him a pout. “Why don't you just give it to me?” she asked. “Because it would be more exciting if you guess where my surprise is.” he said. Joy laughed at him for being a little childish. She was left with no choice but to do what he told her to do. “OK... my guess it... its in the right hand.” she said. Calvin gave her a smirk. “Are you sure?” he asked. She just nodded her head. Then, he slowly opened his right hand, and Joy found it empty. “Fine... it's in the left hand.” Joy said. Calvin gave her another smirk, and when he opened his left hand, Joy found it empty as well. She folded her arms as she glared at him. “Wei... Calvin Chen, are you fooling me?” she asked. Calvin just laughed as he saw her angry expression. Then, he reached for her ear, and then when he pulled back his hand, he was already holding a long stemmed red rose. “This...” he said as he handed it to her. “Is my surprise for you...” he said. Joy couldn't help but smile at what he did. She felt her cheeks turn pink as she took the rose from Calvin. “Thank you.” she said shyly. She buried her nose on the rose, then glanced at him. “I'm glad you liked it...” he said.

Just then, Kit came. The two looked at her smiled. “Hey, Kit!” Calvin called. Kit smiled at him, then as she looked at Joy, she saw her holding a rose. She guessed that it came from Calvin. Feeling jealous, the smile on her face abruptly disappeared. Suddenly she became mad at the two. “Have you seen Danson?” she asked the two in a formal tone. “He's still inside the locker room...” Calvin said. He already noticed the change in her expression, and was confused at her. Kit sighed, as she folded her arms. “Tell him I have no patience in waiting for him. I'll see him in the parking lot.” she said. Then, she turned her back on them and left. “What's wrong with her?” Joy asked Calvin as soon as she was gone. Calvin just shrugged his shoulder. “I don't know... maybe she's not in the mood.” he said. “She's not mad at me, isn't she?” she asked. Calvin gave her a confused look. “Why would she be mad at you?”
“Because I'm taking too much of your time?”
“She understands. And besides, why would she be mad at me for hanging around you when she's always with Danson...”
“Maybe she thinks that I'm taking you away from him. After all, you two have stuck together like Siamese twins.”

Calvin just laughed at what she said. He put his arm around her, and then smiled. “I assure you, Kit doesn't think that way. Besides, she really understands that we have gotten closer. Dont worry, I'll talk to her.” he said. Joy smiled and nodded her head. “I'll talk to her as well. I'll explain to her that you're already courting me that's why you keep on hanging out with me.” she said. Calvin smiled and nodded his head.

--

“You should control your emotion if you wouldn't want him to find out...” Danson said as they were walked outside Kit's house. “I'm trying my best, but I couldn't help but be jealous of her... The more that I see them together, the more that it hits me that I've finally lose him to Joy...” Kit said in a low voice. Kit paused walking, and then turned to face Danson. “I am selfish, right? I am selfish, that I didn't even want to share Calvin with anyone else?” she asked. Danson sighed as he nodded his head. “Anyone who has been in love becomes selfish... I know because many times, I've been jealous of Calvin... I wanted to be close to you the way that he is... I wanted it too bad that I thought of wanting to take his place...” he said. Danson smiled at her, and then put his arm around her. “It's OK to be selfish, but you have to realize where you stand in his life. You do have the right to be jealous of joy, but not too much... because you're just his friend. His best friend.” he reminded her. Kit just gave him a faint smile and nodded. “Thank you for reminding me...” she said in a low voice. He smiled at her, and then gave her a hug. “It's all going to be OK... trust me.” he whispered to her. “I... I just wish...” she said as she looked up at him. “If there's one thing that I would want to happen right, I want all of these feelings to go away, so that I won't be hurting anymore...” she said in a low voice.

“Ehem...” they heard someone say. They looked back, and saw Calvin walking towards them. Danson released Kit from his embrace, and Kit looked at Calvin. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “Can I talk to my best friend?” he asked. Kit looked up at Danson, and he nodded his head. “I'll see how Corine and Annie's doing inside.” he said, pertaining to Kit's little sister and her best friend. Calvin and Kit watched him as he went back inside the house. “So...” Calvin began. “I see Danson's getting close with Annie, huh?” he said. Kit smiled and nodded her head. “Annie's fond of him. I think her friend, Corine have a crush on Danson.” she said. “How about Kit jie jie? Does she also have a crush on Danson?” he teased. Kit only gave him a sigh, not wanting to answer Calvin's question. He could see that Kit does not like his question. “Aiyo... I'm just teasing...” Calvin said defensively. Kit folded her arms as she glared at him. “I don't like the way that you question me.” she said in a firm tone. Calvin became confused with the way she is acting. It seems to him that his best friend is mad at him.

“Kit, is there something wrong? Did I do anything wrong this time?” he asked in a worried tone. Kit let out a bitter smile as she shook her head. “You don't do anything wrong, Calvin. You're too perfect, remember?” she snapped at him. “Then why does it seem that you are mad? If there's something that I have done that you didn't like, then tell me, instead of throwing tantrums.” he said. He was trying to control his temper towards her, and Kit could feel that he's getting frustrated at her. “Go... be mad at me... because if there's one thing that you did that I hated, it's when you made me fall in love with you” she thought. Calvin sighed, and began to soften up. “Kit, please don't be like this. You know very well that I really don't like it when you're mad at me.” he said. Kit folded her arms as she sighed. “You... you just caught me in a very bad mood, Cal. I think we should talk some other time...” she said in a more calm tone. Then, she turned his back at him, and headed inside the house. But before she could make another step, Calvin stopped him by holding her hand. “Kit... I think it's better if we talk about this today.” he said to her. Kit looked back at him, and saw his pleading expression. “I noticed that since I told you that I'll be courting Joy, you've been like this. You've been avoiding me, and you seem to be always mad at me. I want to know why...” he said. Kit shook her head again. “I'm just in a bad mood...” she lied. The truth is, she have been trying to avoid him as much as she could, so that he won't notice that she's jealous of Joy. Calvin shook his head after hearing her answer. “You think you could lie to me? I know you very well... You-”
“Yes, I know. I'm your best friend, and you know me from head to toe. Cal... maybe you don't know me at all.”

Calvin is getting frustrated at her. All he wanted was to have a small talk with her, but he felt like she's pushing him away. “Kit... I don't know what's going on, but I just hope you'll come around...” he said. Then he turned to leave. Kit watched him as he walks away, and she could feel her heart breaking with every step he takes. “The problem with you...” she shouted at him. “When you found someone to love, you tend to forget everything. You tend to forget me! You know why I'm mad? Because I'm so scared of losing you.” Calvin paused, and then smiled to himself. “So that's why...” he thought. Then he turned to face her again. “What did I told you before?” he asked as he walked towards her. Kit put her hands on her pocket, then turned her gaze away from him. “T-that... that I don't have to worry about losing you. T-that you would never ever leave m-me... and that... t-that nothing c-could separate us...” she said. She looked at him again, and saw him standing in front of her, smiling. “You forgot one thing... that you will always come first because you're my best friend.” he said. “I... I don't think that would happen. Especially if Joy is already your girlfriend.” she said. Calvin sighed again, and then folded his arms. “I only made a mistake of leaving you once, and it seems that you could not forget it....” he said, pertaining to the incident that happened between them and Trixie. Calvin smiled at him, and then pulled her towards him, and hugged her tight. “Kit Jin, you are my only best friend in this whole world. Nothing could ever replace you, remember that.” he said to her. Suddenly, she felt tears forming at the corner of her eyes after hearing the words best friend. “Should I be happy because I am your best friend, or should I cry because that's all we'll ever be?” she thought. Before the tear could fall from her eyes, she pushed Calvin away from her. “I... I should go. Annie might need me inside.” she said. Not waiting for him to say anything, Kit, immediately rushed inside the house, and closed the door. She rested behind the door as she let the tears fall from her eyes. “I've lost you Calvin... I know I have lost you...” she thought. “And I've lost you to Joy...”
