Twenty Six

The Mission (Got7 & BAP)

a/n: There's a lot of swearing ahead..just to let you know.

"Kim Hye-In, how nice it is to see you."

I'm actually screwed. That was my first thought when those words came from his mouth. It was the calm before the storm. There was no way he came here to share lunch.

"Hello...Tuan." There was a silence after that. He was making me anticipate what he was going to say... or he was trying to get me to talk through the silence. I as now, again, on the other side of the interrogation table.

Tuan leaned back in his chair and put his arms behind his head. We never broke eye contact and his eyebrows even went up to almost prompt me. What did he want me to say...Sorry?

"I got put on probation because of your little half marathon to Jackson's house last week."

"Oh."

He echoed me, "Oh," and shrugged afterward, looking to the clock. He took in air and tilted his head a bit, "I don't think I'll have enough time to finish yelling at you today, so I'll come back Tuesday, same time. Is that fine with you?" His gaze snapped back to me and my eyes widened a bit. I'm surprised he kept this calm and was still being civil. Is this was it feels like to actually be on the receiving end of the good cop-bad cop Tuan?

"I...guess." He nodded and leaned forward, rolling up his sleeves and clasping his hands together. I've seen this stance before. This is when Tuan would either come in real close and threaten you or blow his . For me, I think it will be the latter.

"Alright then... shall we begin?" Why am I so fidgety? I looked down at the hands that heed many rifles completely still as I shot the targt ahead. They were shaking. Was this fear or guilt doing this to me? I've experienced both of them before, but the signs of fear weren't showing as much as guilt. Did I feel guilty? Hands shaking. Check. Not looking Tuan in the eyes. Check. This stupid feeling in the pit of my stomach. Well, damn...

"I...guess?" It was a question this time and he nodded again, collecting himself.

"Why the actual  did you think it was acceptable to just run out of the door?!" He slammed down his hand on the table and I jumped out of my seat. Everyone was looking at us and the other conversations had stopped. I even saw the guard reach for the tranquilizer.

"Do you think it's all fun and games, Hye-In? Because I am a grown man and I do not like to play hide and seek around the whole ing city of Seoul! Do you know how long it took me to find you?! Do you?!" He was standing now and had one of his hands on his belt. I think everyone was too engrossed in the drama to stop him from ranting.

"I-I. No?"

"No...No?" He started laughing and I did too, trying to calm him down. He looked like he was going to flip over the table. I've never seen him lose his temper like this. And I would be one of the most probable people who would have had a chance to see this before.

"Longer than the Cheif. And do you know, do you know what that bastard told me, Hye-In?" I shook my head quickly.

He made me jump again, "Answer me!"

"No, what did he say?" It was rushed and almost a plea to shut him up, even though I knew it wouldn't work.

"He told me I was on ing probation again. Again! It's been five years since I've been on probation. My record was clean until you," He pointed at me, "got here. Why are you the one causing all of my problems? Running away, hospital visits, arrest records. I've never been this stressed since I had 20 guns on me in Busan. That was when I first started, Hye-In. I was 19 when I started. You're going to cause my premature death!"

"Tuan, calm d-" I put my hands up, almost shielding myself from his words with them. I knew it wouldn't work. Every time I've done this before, it never works. It just makes them madder and makes it hurt more.

"Do not tell me to calm down! I have been holding this in for ages. We aren't even a third of the way done! I've never been so heated in my life! I give you a house, clothes, I protect you, and you have the audacity," He was now ranting in English. I made him that mad that he was screaming in his mother tongue, "to run away from me. I've been put on probation! Do you know that the best part of my day is coming here," He slammed his fist down on the table," to yell at you! I don't get to go out in the field, I can't interrogate people, do you know who my ing replacement is?!" Finally, someone spoke up.

"Sir, if you can quiet down, I'm trying to talk to my son." He glanced at her and that's when I really saw the Tuan that didn't give a . The lady had to be 65 and he was going to disregard her completely.

"Am I being too loud?" That was in Korean and she nodded.

"You think I'm going to quiet down? Because that's exactly what I'm going to do." He sat down quickly and came really close to my face. Now for part two.

"Look at me following people's requests like a person should do. As I was saying, do you - " His voice raised a little bit and it quieted down to a harsh whisper, "Do you know who my replacement is?" I shook my head.

"ing Jo Kwon. I don't think he has held a gun in his whole life. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but he can't do what I can. But because of you, I had to turn in my gun and get a whole stack of papers! I'm practically in Jackson's office 24/7 with a stick up my . My back physically hurts from reading all these case reports. I'm only 24 years old and you've given me backaches and stress. Next, I'm going to lose my hair."

"I don't think-"

"This is not what you think, this is what I think. And let me start about the topic of having to look at Jackson's face when I know he lied to me. You two ing tag teamed me and ed me in the . I'm Hulk Hogan and you're the Undertaker and you've just ruined my title streak!"

"Who's Hulk...Tuan, I don't think you should say-"

"Again this is not ab-"

"Mr. Tuan. Corporal Kim has to go back to training. Your 30 minutes are over."

"Corporal? How are you-?

"I have to go," I stood up hella fast, finally getting to escape, "See you Tuesday." I practically ran to the cage to get back in.

"Yah! Kim Hye-In, I'm not done with you!" I shot through the opened door before he could yell anything else.

"You thought I didn't trust you then, oh, you have it coming for you Kim Hye-In." He was standing and yelling again, interrupting a nice couple's lunch. He even brought his own, which he hadn't touched. Was he missing his lunch break for me? How kind.

I was motioning my hands at him to sit down slightly rising from my chair, but he disregarded me completely.

"I was thinking about giving you kitchen priveledges. Gone. I'm thinking about taking away your living room privileges."

"I'm never in the livi-"

"Oh, we have the need to talk-back today! Gone. Cancelled. I wanted to talk but you ran out of the apartment. Look at me I'm not running though!" He spread his arms out and turned a bit.

"You're a coward, Hye-In." That hit me and I stood up.

"First of all-"

"Cancelled." He reached across the table and pushed my back down by the shoulders.

"You ran away from your problems. Do you know what I would be if I ran away from my problems?!"

"Not here right now."

"Literally, what point of can-"

"And I wouldn't be in this spot either, but here I am." I looked behind me at my savior.

"Jackson thank god, he was yelling at m-"

"-She thinks she can jus get off because she's in the arm-"

"-And I swear he's almost hit me like twi-"

"-I never hit you! What are these li-"

"-And he-!"

"Alright, you two that is ing enough! I thought I got rid of this when you left, but apparently, Mark's silence is just him planning on how he's going to yell at you."

"Can you blame me?" Jackson shrugged and I noticed he was holding a folder in his hand. Is he getting recruits for the police side of things?

"What's in the folder?" I was the first time I had spoken an actual sentence in like 20 minutes.

He looked own at it and switched it to his other hand. So, it was something he wanted to hide?

"Nothing. Just new recruits for the police force. There isn't a lot this year." Tuan narrowed his eyes at someone besides me.

"That doesn't sound right," He took a step towards Jackson, "This isn't the time for recruits, and you get tons. Not everyone was the possibility of a harsh military career and leaving motherland."

"Don't you have someone to yell at?" Huh, Jackson's getting defensive. I want to know what's in the file now.

"No, as a matter of fact, our time is up. Goodbye, Hye-In. Thursday." He turned and walked with Jackson out the door, trying to get a glimpse of the folder.

"Suspicious. Very."

"Corporal Kim!" I looked up from my tray of food and stood up, saluting Park as he walked up to me, folder in hand. I knew what this folder was and I smirked. I have a bone to pick with a few of the new ones and I'm ready.

"Here is the list of your soldiers. I'm sure you'll find some of these assignments...delightful?" He handed me the folder and I opened it greedily, "First do regular conditioning. Running, push-ups, sit-ups, group work. Then they're going to do the obstacle course. If you could demonstrate how to do it well first that would be great," I smirked, "Then after someone has a passing time, you can take them to the wall to learn how to grapple and climb. No zip-lining today, you'll do that when Kim's around. There's lunch at 1100 and then we're all going to the shooting range together. I think you can just shoot and observe there until dinner. Do you have objections?"

"No, sir!" I said enthusiastically flipping through the names again and again. Hell yes.

"At 0700 we will meet. I think you might want to take attendance the first day, some of them are a bit afraid of you."

"I'm aware that you taught hand-to-hand combat and specialized in explosives and rigging, am I right?"

"Yes, sir. I can be of any assistance in those fields." He nodded and I flipped to the profile I most wanted to see.

"Ah, do you want your whistle now or later?" I looked up at Park again and tried to hide my smirk.

"I get a whistle?"

_

"Every time I blow my whistle, you should be in a new position. I do not want to see anyone struggle to get into proper form! How long have you been here? Kim!"

"Private Kim SungJin! Almost two years, ma'am!" I was holding them in plank position and it made me sad at how weak some of them were.

"If it's been two years, how come some of you can't hold proper form for more than 30 seconds?" I put my foot on one of the other's backs and he struggles to keep himself up.

"Private! I am 40 kilograms and you can't even handle my foot !" I shook my head and walked to the front of the group, surveying all of them.

"Again! The first one to get out of the cycle is the one who has to beat my time on the obstacle course." I blew my whistle signaling them to go up and down. A few of them were looking at the other group who was doing some zip-lining. I bet they wish they were there right now. I turned back to the group, zeroing in on the target. Who was the first one to get out of rhythm every time and I was waiting for it again? And he said had bad push-up form?

"I think last time I got under 2 minutes. That's one of the best scores, huh. Maybe you'll impress me." This is when most of them panic. I don't whistle and they have to remember the pace. If they were smart, they'd see that I was walking to the pace of the whistle.

It took all of 3 seconds for him to mess up from the rest of the group.

"Private Hwang! It seems to be your lucky day! Everyone clap for your fellow soldier." His look was pure, unadulterated fear. Jae had never gotten less than 3 minutes. He was going to be there all day.

I sat on top of the wall, watching everyone line up to take their advances. Jae was waiting to go last, foolish move.

"Alright, we are either going to wait here together till Private Hwang can do it in under two minutes or we can leave him here while we go eat. Raise your hand for option two." Most of the troop raised their hand and Jae glared at all of them. I feel like they didn't get trained at all during these 2 years.

"Does anyone know what the Soldier's Creed says?" Some of them lowered their hands, "You never leave a fallen comrade. We will all wait until Private Hwang has no time left." There were groans and I could tell some of them are mad at him.

"If any of you want to take up Private Hwang's place because you are mad at him, be my guest. If not, you can stand at the sides and cheer him on with some songs. You as a troop live and die together. If Private Hwang falls, you pick him up, even if you hate him. Is that understood?"

"Yes, Ma'am!"

"Good, you many be-" The last thing I remember is my whistle hitting the ground before I did.

Chapter 48: I almost screamed when I saw that this had been updated recently. I was truly surprised, thank you so much. I hope you are doing fine, safe and healthy.
This is one of my favourite stories ever on this app and I've already read it more than twice. There is something about the characterisation of the protagonists and the dynamic of their relationship that is so intriguing and riveting that I come back to this quite often. I'm so excited to see how the plot will turn out. Please come back to this more often :):)
Thanks for the update again. Stay safe :)
