Chapter LXII

His Uncanny Wife

Narrator

The phone fell from Haena’s hand as she looked back at Sehun’s eyes. She quickly turned around to leave, but Junghyun was blocking her.

“J-Jagiya.” She uttered. “I was getting some fresh air.”

However, Junghyun stood frozen in his place as he watched her. His head tilted to the side, an unreadable expression on his face. “Schizophrenia.”

Haena’s eyes widened. “What?”

Junghyun raised the paper on his hand. It was a copy of a medical diagnosis report. It was a copy of the same paper Sekyung was holding— the same that Sehun discovered in Sekyung’s room.

Junghyun’s lip trembled as he took a step forward. “You’re sick?”

“No! This is all Sekyung’s doing. She tried to frame me and—“

“You’re sick.” Junghyun said with finality as his head hung low. “All this time. You were sick.”

Haena shook her head vigorously. Tears started streaming down her face. “Jagi, you have to believe me. Please! I.... I am your fiancé! I am a Jeon!”

Junghyun picked up the phone on the floor and saw the texts. He chuckled bitterly and met her gaze. She sobbed into his chest, but Junghyun pried her hands off him and motioned for the two security men waiting behind the door.

“Take her.” He said numbly, deaf to her sobs and pleads.

Sehun wasted no time. He quickly went inside the hall, followed by Kai. Sekyung was about to leave, but she took a step towards Jungkook and Sera.

“I’m sorry, for everything.”

Sera pulled away from Jungkook’s arms. She didn’t notice, but tears were already lining her cheek. It’s done, she thought. It’s finally done.

She looked down, unable to look at Sekyung. “No, it’s me who should be sorry.”

“I’m not entirely innocent, Sera. I started it.”

“W-What?”

Jungkook exhaled and held Sera’s hand. He looked at Sekyung and managed a small smile. “I think we should talk about everything. Now.”

Sekyung nodded and proceeded to the hall. Sera was about to follow but Jungkook held her close to him, burying his head on her hair. “I’m sorry you had to go through all this, Sera. I… My family… I brought this all upon—“

“No.” She stated and pulled away. She gently held his cheek and frowned. “Don’t go blame yourself, Jeon Jungkook.”

No words could come out of his lips.

“I… I don’t know how I would’ve survived without you by my side. So… thank you.”

She embraced him once more, and he held her close without any intention of letting go.

“I… I leaked Sera’s photos to the reporter. I was… I was threatened by another girl entering the family, so I wanted her out. Or at least, I wanted her image of being the dragon lady tainted.” Sekyung explained.

Sera looked away, biting her lip. Jungkook was sitting beside her. Everyone was in the room— the boys, the elders, Kai, and Sehun. Junghyun was even there, leaning on the door frame. He remained emotionless the whole afternoon.

“Then, I found out about my father, Shim Taekyung.”

Mrs. Park gasped. “Y-You are Taekyung’s lost daughter? Shim Hanbyul?”

Sekyung nodded. Mr. Park exhaled heavily at the memory of his friend.

“I loathed the Parks after that. I thought, if it weren’t for them, I still would have a father. I hated Sera even more, so I gave all the files I garnered from my private investigator to the reporter. I asked him to publish an issue about her every month.”

Mrs. Jeon couldn’t hide her disappointment as she sniffled in the corner. Mr. Jeon was just looking out the window.

Sekyung let out a shaky breath as she went on. “I… I also released the pictures of Sera and Kai together.”

“How about the security breach with the Park’s system? Was it you?” Sehun, who was noticeably quiet for the past few minutes, spoke up.

Sekyung shook her head. “No. When I found out about my father… I had time to think over some things. Before that I was completely devastated by Junghyun and Haena getting married, and with news of Sera and her brilliance in the business field. But when I knew I had zero chances of being together with my father, it put everything into perspective.”

“So the hacking, the system sabotage, it wasn’t you?”

Sekyung nodded. “I booked a flight to leave. I wanted to move on with my life and find myself.”

“The one way ticket to London?” Sehun asked, remembering the ticket he saw at her room. Sekyung nodded once more. “But I never got to leave. I already stopped all my contacts with the reporters and the investigators. But I was startled to receive news that there was someone attacking the Parks.”

“When Haena arrived… that was the time the hacking started.”

Junghyun, who had been listening for a while now, exhaled heavily. “I… I need some fresh air.” He muttered before leaving the room.

Mr. Jeon finally turned away from the window. “When did you find out about Haena’s… sickness?”

“The day Namjoon got in an accident, I was with Haena in a restaurant. She told me that she knew I had published Sera’s photos, and about my father. When I went out, I saw Namjoon. He heard everything. I was so scared that he’d believe what Haena was accusing me of. I also was surprised how Haena was suddenly coming at me like that.”

“Y-You had nothing to do with Namjoon Oppa’s accident, right?”

Sehyung shook her head. “No. I went home straight after and called a friend from Shanghai. I asked her about Haena, about what happened after I left, and she was surprised that I didn’t know that Haena had been sent away by her parents for treatment at some mental facility. I did some digging after that, and found about her schizophrenic diagnosis. That started my suspicions. I tried helping by investigating Namjoon's car crash myself and by helping in the Yeouido branch. But she always was a step ahead. I... I could not do anything right, so I used my last resort. I went to Sera to tell her to stay away.”

Jungkook remembered how Sekyung mentioned about the black car. Sera thought about how Sekyung tried to warn her after her press conference. Everything was making sense.

“I think this is too much for today.” He said as he stepped forward.

It was late that night when Sekyung decided to see Haena. She couldn’t get a moment of ease knowing that her friend was behind everything.

She walked down the hall of the mental institute, recalling her conversation with Haena months ago.

“I noticed your behavior around Sera, Kyung.”

Sekyung raised one brow. “What are you talking about?”

“You… you don’t like her. I know you, Kyung. I know when you don’t like someone.”

She watched as Sekyung looked away, not saying anything.

“You’re my best friend, and I value you so much. I want to be with you in times like this, but I respect your choice of being alone. It’s just that… I hope you don’t divert the pain to bringing other people down.”

Sekyung’s brows furrowed. “What are you trying to say?”

“Just… don’t hurt Sera, Kyung. She’s not your enemy.”

Sekyung chuckled bitterly. “I can’t believe you think that way.”

Sekyung entered the room where Haena was confined. She looked at her friend, or who used to be her friend, strapped in the bed.

“Why, Haena?”

Haena looked at her with a smile. “Because I felt like it.”

Sekyung exhaled and shook her head. “You told me before, that I should never hurt Sera. But why did you do it?”

Haena chuckled in delight. “Because I wanted to be the one to do it. Amusing, isn’t it?”

Sekyung’s pained expression made Haena laugh even more. “Why, Haena? Just for the fun of it?” She asked in frustration.

“Yes. You had the perfect life, Sekyung, even if you are an orphan. You had Junghyun tied on your finger. Then I found out about you trying to ruin Sera. I figured it would be nice to help you out.”

“I would never bomb a place filled with innocent people, Haena! I would never cause someone to be in a coma!”

“That’s why you’re weak!” Haena fired back. “I loved the thrill, Sekyungie. It was fun. And the Jeons, they loved me. They made me one of them so easily. How gullible.”

Sekyung couldn’t help but let the tears fall. “W-What happened to you?”

That was when Haena’s stare became cold and dark.

“I hated how you were so happy with Junghyun, so I figured I had to have him for myself. When I met Sera, I saw you in her. You were both so alike. I hated it. And the fact that she was marrying into the same family that I was, it peeved me to death. I wanted the likes of you gone. So I had to do something. I started using that poor Kim Jongin, but he’s such a coward. And of course, you. You acted the role quite well. Your disinterest towards Sera made you the perfect villain.”

“You went so far…”

“Because I can, Sekyung. I can do the things you couldn’t. I knew that if I sabotaged Sera’s life and pointed it out to you, both of you would be ruined.”

The tears wouldn’t stop streaming down Sekyung’s face. “You’re crazy.” She hissed. Haena managed to laugh. “Didn’t you find that out days ago?!” She let out a shrill laugh that sent shivers down Sekyung’s body.

“You will pay for what you’ve done.” Sekyung murmured and left the room.

Jungkook watched his brother’s car leave the estate. He huffed in frustration as he heard her mother and father arguing upstairs.

He heaved a deep sigh as he walked towards his brother’s room. Adjacent to it was the room the Jeons offered to Haena. He noticed that the door was ajar, so he went inside to check.

There was nothing extraordinary.

Of course, she wouldn’t leave any traces of her craziness.

She looked at the bedside table and tilted his head at a particular picture. It was his picture with Sekyung and Junghyun when they were kids. He didn't know why, but he had the urge to open the frame.

Another picture was hidden, just like he thought. It was of Haena, Sekyung, and Junghyun during their university days. A big X was scrawled on Sekyung’s face.

The buzzing of his phone in his pocket woke him up from his thoughts.

“Sera?”

“Jeon…”

His brows knitted together at the tone of her voice. “W-What happened?”

“It’s Namjoon Oppa. He… He woke up.”
