It rained that day, after a five month dry spell, it had to rain then of all days.
Irene would always say how she missed the rain, how the air smelled right before a storm and how everything seemed so much more alive afterwards.
I would agree, because how could I argue against that? After seeing that longing look in her eyes, how could I tell her that I in fact hated the rain?
I remember one time, Irene and I were sitting at home, electric fans on full speed. Our air conditioner had broken a few weeks prior which I constantly complained about.
I was reading while she was looking outside the window and suddenly, she started tugging on my shirt.
“Wendy, look!” She whispered in full excitement. “It's raining.”
Looking up to see it was indeed raining, I hummed in response and went back reading my book.
“I bet it feels great.” Irene was in deep thought, still staring out the window, admiring the pouring rain.
