I had loved her

I fell in love with a girl named Irene.
A girl who slept on park benches.
Never had a sign or a bucket for change.
Just a sweet smile twirling on her lips.
She was once the girl:
Who doodled poems on the back of music sheets.
And criss-crossing patterns on homework assignment.
But the sticks and stones they threw broke her bones.
And their words left bruises on her paper skin.
And her paintbrush hair, gone dry until the sky poured rain.
Irene was once the girl:
Bare feet dancing on earth.
Her arms spiraling, and she formed flowing galaxies.
Galaxies beyond our bubble of crystal sky.
She once said:
She'd rather live free.
Not confined to concepts of true love or true romance.
She was her own.
My plea to the society:
I hid from its gaze on subway trains.
Riding to nowhere, but they laughed at my cries.
“Life is unfair.”
Criss-crossing patterns, the subway routes.
And poems spray printed on the walls.
Irene once said:
She'd rather live free.
Until her bones broke down.
And until her skin went cold.
Bare feet dancing on tar.
Her story spiraling into non existence.
They'd never know her name.<
