"What did you bring for me today?" Jooheon asked as he stood on the shore of the beach, looking at the water where his best friend Minah stayed. She pulled a necklance out from the water and tossed it to the boy.

"There. I'm sure it has value of some sort," said Minah. "So, you're staying here today, right?"

Jooheon stuffed the jewelry into his pocket and nodded his head. He smiled. "That's what we agreed, didn't we? You will find treasure and give it to me. In exchange, I'll keep you company for the day."

Minah smiled, happy that he had kept his promise ever since they made the declaration. She swam about in the water.

"Can't you tell me?" Jooheon questioned all of a sudden.

Minah's smile disappeared right away and was replaced with a serious expression. She knew what Jooheon wanted to know. He wanted to know why she never talked to him on land, why she always kept a distance in the water, and why she always asked him to stay with her. Minah could not tell him. There was no way Minah could ever tell Jooheon that she was a mermaid.

Merpeople were supposed to be creatures that steered ships in the right direction and sing to some sailors out at sea. These half-human, half-fish had the most beautiful voices. Those who have heard a merperson sing were known to be lucky for the rest of their lives.

But that was not Minah. Unfortunately, she produced the opposite effect.
