"The hurt you feel, pains me more than anything." 

Chapter One: Vow

Fourteen years old Sunggyu was chasing after his best friend, Woohyun. Woohyun was a bright boy, perhaps a little too happy for a child who is staying in an orphanage. "G-Give me back!" The brunet panted after the long chase. His eyes were teary and he was tired from the chasing, palms pressed on his knees as he breathed heavily. But, Sunggyu needed his pendant back. Times like this, Sunggyu really hated how fit and irritating the black haired man was. The pendant was really important to Sunggyu and he couldn't lose it, no matter what.


"Woohyun!" Sunggyu yelled at the figure that was going further away from him. The boy suddenly stopped and turned back. When Woohyun realized that his best friend was so upset and tired from the chasing, he felt kind of bad. But, he didn't want to stop. His mischievous mind wanted to tease his best friend more. He continued running with an angry and scared Sunggyu behind him.

Sunggyu was scared; he was in a dark place. His caretaker in the orphanage is going to scold both of them when they get back. They were not supposed to roam around outside after six and yet the clock is about to hit seven. The sun had set long ago and the dark clouds have risen, blocking any sign of light from shining through. Sunggyu knew that Woohyun wouldn't do anything to his pendant as this was not the first time the boy had took his pendant away.


The dark haired boy just loves the reaction of the brown haired boy when he is panicking. Woohyun said before that he liked that look on Sunggyu- when Sunggyu looks scared. "W-Woohyun?" Sunggyu whispered to nothing. He entered a creepy looking forest, Sunggyu's heart thumped quickly as the sight of the forest. It was dark and quiet- everything he was scared of. Sunggyu was terrified when he realized he lost sight of his best friend. Tears clouded his vision and his heart tightened, he felt like he couldn't breathe. 

Woohyun hid behind the tree nearest to him. He loved darkness, the obvious difference between Woohyun and Sunggyu. Sunggyu was someone that adored the lights- something that Woohyun hated. Woohyun loves watching Sunggyu's fearful look on his face. He had no idea why but his best friend looks extremely adorable whenever he was afraid. He would start sniffling, with teary eyes and shaking lips. Woohyun would feel like he was the stronger one because he hated how Sunggyu was older. He hated how Sunggyu always draw a line between them by using the older-card. However, Woohyun would ignore their small age difference and still consider them as same aged. 

Seeing how vulnerable his hyung was, Woohyun couldn't help but to smile in delight. He want to be the stronger one, he didn't like protection. He wanted to protect Sunggyu instead. So he decided to give Sunggyu a scare before boasting off to him about how courageous he was to save him from the creepy forest they were trapped in. Even though Sunggyu was older, he had always been the crybaby. He was easily scared and couldn't handle pain well. Woohyun laughed in silent at the frantic look on Sunggyu's face as he was looking for Woohyun and couldn't find him. Sunggyu's dark brown eyes were clouded with wet tears, he was sniffling and his lips were quivering- he looked like he was about to cry.

Woohyun decided to wait for a little more before showing himself. However, the longer he stared at Sunggyu, he realized something; the older was crying and he looked like he was in pain. Woohyun started to get worried as he might have carried away with his joke. He moved away from the tree he hid behind and went forward to console the older. Sunggyu was clutching his heart tightly as he felt like he couldn't breathe. The darkness was suffocating him as if someone was grabbing his throat. Sunggyu's breathing came out uneven in sharp gasps as if he was drowning in a deep pool.

No, this isn't how it was supposed to go. Woohyun freaked out at his best friend's difficulty in breathing. For the first time ever, he actually felt scared. He grabbed onto Sunggyu's clammy palms as he helped in with his deep breathing. Sunggyu seemed to be more relaxed when he saw the black haired boy. Sunggyu saw how the pendant twinkled in the dark as Woohyun shoved the pendant into his palms. When he knew that Woohyun was back by his side and he wasn't alone, Sunggyu was glad. However, the pain in his heart didn't fade away as the breathing seemed to have gotten harder.

Sunggyu decided that maybe it was the end. His time was up and he was in the arms of his best friend. With his breathing getting shorter and shorter, he took the opportunity to stare at the boy who was holding by his arms tightly. For the first time, Sunggyu couldn’t believe that he actually saw the terrified expression plastered over Woohyun's face. Woohyun's eyes were shaky and it screams nothing but fear. Sunggyu wonders if Woohyun was afraid of the dark. However, he chuckled inwardly at that thought as he remembered how much Woohyun adored the darkness.

"Hyung! I'm sorry!" Woohyun breathed as he looked into the almost closing dark brown orbs. Sunggyu shook his head lightly to show Woohyun that it wasn’t his fault. Yes, Woohyun might have been playful but that doesn't mean that it is his fault. "Sunggyu! Are you okay? Reply me!" Woohyun shakes Sunggyu as he could feel Sunggyu's grip on Woohyun arms weakened. 

Woohyun was afraid; he found this situation absolutely ridiculous. It was as if a prank had gone wrong; how could Sunggyu have a panic attack when Woohyun was just joking with him? Woohyun hates it- that horrible pain in his heart as if someone have driven a knife into his chest. That horrible feeling only existed when he saw Sunggyu having difficulties in breathing and when he was crying so painfully. Woohyun decides that it would be the last time he would see Sunggyu in pain. He hated that horrible clench in his heart whenever Sunggyu was in pain. He loved the look of fear Sunggyu gives him, but definitely not the look of pain. 

"Breathe, Gyu, Breathe!" Woohyun told the older as he clutched his fingers. Sunggyu tried his best, but it didn't help. Sunggyu only realized how handsome Woohyun looks- his dark eyes, sharp nose and plum lips when he sees him up-close. This was the first time Sunggyu actually took notice of Woohyun, he was mesmerized. Woohyun was the last thing he saw before everything turned black, leaving him in the arms of Woohyun. 

Woohyun carried Sunggyu on his back as he rushed back to the orphanage in the dark. This was the first time Sunggyu had fainted outside. Even though Sunggyu was weak, he had never been through any panic attack. Woohyun was dead worried and he couldn’t help but feel strange at his sudden fainting. When they reached the orphanage, their caretaker freaked out at Sunggyu’s sudden panic attack and sent him to the doctor. Woohyun got a bad scolding from the caretaker for staying out late.

That day, Woohyun held onto Sunggyu’s pale arms and cried horribly. He did not cry because he had a scolding, but because he overheard the doctor telling the caretaker that Sunggyu probably had a panic attack because he was Nyctophobic. He might have died during the panic attack if he wasn’t send to the hospital on time. That was also the day that Woohyun vowed to protect the older from any pain.
