“How is she?” “She’s okay. Just.. umm.. you know, crying.” “WHAT?!”,a pause. “W-Why?”, came the soft, worried whisper. “Err.. she’s upset over something.” “Something what—“, Yoona heard him drew a sigh on the other line. “I’m coming home.” “Oh you don’t—“ a loud wail reverberated over the whole living room she was in and she rolled her eyes. “Okay.”, she agreed, hanging up as she walked back to the sobbing Hyukjae. The redhead’s sprawled on the couch, box of tissue in her hand as she hugged a fluffy pillow, her eyes fixed on the screen where a classic Jun Jihyun film was playing. “This is so freaking sad! Why did he have to die, I can’t take this!”, she exclaimed, coughing as she did so and carried on with her howls. So after Hyukjae’s Official Worst Day in History ever, she told Yoona she wasn’t in the mood to hit the sack yet (‘Who knows if I do I’ll get a nightmare and die, the day hasn’t end yet, I know there’s more to come’) they decided to watch some late night shows and one channel showed Windstruck. Yoona’s grateful Mrs. Lee’s still haven’t returned from her trip because Hyukjae was a freaking mess. She wasn’t sure if the redhead’s upset over the movie or her life in general but the point was, she kept on crying and Donghae texting and calling every ten minutes wasn’t helping either. “Love makes people stupid.”, the younger uttered but it’s not like Hyukjae’s listening. Hyukjae blew her nose, then cried like a five year old with hanging open and her hair’s all over her face and she’s just so unpretty right at that moment alright. Yoona shook her head, wiping Hyukjae’s face as she sighed. “This is why I prefer books over this. Life dramas and being stupid are too mainstream.” Hyukjae answered her with a series of hiccups. - He came back rather late, and he blamed the heavy late night traffic, the slow bus driver, and basically everything that came in his way. Taking his shoes off and shutting the door, he hurried his way to his room, but at the foot of the stairs he noticed a huge mound on their living room’s couch, he walked closer and found Hyukjae. She was tucked in a blanket, half of her face buried on the pillow she was hugging tightly. Her cheeks were damp, an indication that she must have cried in her sleep. Donghae wanted to kill whoever responsible for Hyukjae’s tears right then, oblivious to the fact that if he did so it’ll be suicide. Slowly and carefully, he lifted Hyukjae up. The girl grunted but shifted immediately to snuggle on his chest, Donghae was grateful she didn’t wake up. He carried her to their room, placing her gently on his bed and although trivial and a little bit too cheesy, he didn’t stop himself when his hand instinctively caressed her cheek, smiling faintly when Hyukjae leaned in to his touch. “No more crying Hyukjae.”, he whispered even though no one will hear. “Please don’t cry anymore.” Those were the last words Hyukjae heard before she completely drifted to sleep. - Hyukjae woke up with Donghae’s handsome face, oh wow since when did she actually find Donghae so incredibly handsome, staring straight to her and she thought this must have been heaven. “Am I dead?”, she murmured and when Donghae chuckled she came to comprehend that she must be because everything suddenly felt good and nothing hurt anymore. She dared to reach for his face, and all the chuckles were gone as her palm touched the softness of his cheek. Hyukjae frowned, why was Donghae not smiling anymore? She put a pressure on the corner of his mouth with her thumb, pressing those corners upward as if asking Donghae to smile again. As if sensing what she was trying to do, Donghae did smile, wider than before and Hyukjae smiled back because ahh Donghae’s beautiful and life is beautiful and life with Donghae will be more beautiful but she’s in heaven now and— “Good morning Hyukjae.” Wait. Hyukjae sat up, her hand still on Donghae’s face and blinked, letting her eyes wander around and found that heaven looked exactly like Donghae’s room. The redhead shifted her gaze back on Donghae’s face, the boy tilting his head to his side and he looked so cute like a lost puppy and what the— Even before Donghae realized what was about to come, Hyukjae’s palm went to slap his cheek, hard and loud that the poor boy howled. “AW! What’s that for?!”, Donghae bellowed, holding on to his cheek as he eyed the stunned Hyukjae. “Did it hurt?”, she asked instead and the boy stared at her like she’s some ridiculous creature as he placed another hand over the one holding his cheek, it’s as if it could alleviate the pain while he whimpered. “What do you think?!”, he exclaimed, sniffing to himself while Hyukjae widened her eyes in apprehension. “Oh my God! It hurt! Then it means this is real!”, she cried out, cupping her face as she fully understood that she’s not dead, she’s not in heaven and what happened earlier was definitely real. “Well if you’re checking if everything’s real or not it’s a common sense that you pinch yourself, not the other person around!”, Donghae reasoned out, pouting and all as he appeased his sore cheek. Hyukjae attempted to talked back, but she was defeated by the blush that instantly crept on her cheeks upon the reminder that she did woke up with Donghae’s face as the first thing she saw and how she loved the idea of seeing it in the next mornings of her life. Ugh, that was cheesy. “Anyway, I have something to ask you. Why were you with Junhyung yesterday? I thought you severed all your ties with those guys and want nothing to do with them? And you even got drunk!” If she didn’t know better, Hyukjae would have thought that’s jealousy lingering on Donghae’s voice but no, that would be highly impossible. She should stop getting her hopes high that Donghae would ever feel the same. “Ya! Answer me!”, Donghae demanded, tugging on her arm and it’s not as if she could actually tell him everything’s made up. It’s true that he met Junhyung and the gang but the part where she’s wasted and all was definitely all an act. Cursing herself inwardly, Hyukjae avoided the boy’s probing stare a
