The place was dimly-lit, with a portion of space at the center especially decorated with lights and indoor artificial plants, a dinner table for two, candle lights and the usual upbeat pop music played all over the supermarket during the day were replaced by soulful love songs, the place screaming a dinner date for two.   Kyuhyun was in the middle of retelling how Mr. Byun, the supermarket manager, was nothing but enthusiastic regarding this whole romantic date thing when Hyukjae, unintentionally, caught a glimpse of the arrays of orange tangerines from the fruit section across from where she and Kyuhyun were. Tangerines. Wow. What a way to remind her of Donghae.   “Hyukjae!” Hyukjae was a little startled when she heard her name, eyes meeting Kyuhyun’s and found the other with his elbow propped against the table, chin on his palm, an amused smile on his face. “You’re not listening.” “I-I..” “It’s okay, typical you. It means my words weren’t that appealing for you to actually care.”, Kyuhyun said, taking a huge portion off the grilled meat which served as their main course for the evening and stuffing it all in his mouth. He wasn’t aware, or perhaps forgot the fact that it was newly-cooked, causing him to spit it out and fanned his tongue using his hands from the painful burn.   Hyukjae chuckled, offering her glass of ice-cold water since Kyuhyun’s drinking wine. The boy took it, placing it on the table as he scooped a big block of ice from it and pressed it on his tongue. He’s drooling and he certainly looked ugly now which was something one shouldn’t be in front of his date but this is Hyukjae, and Kyuhyun could actually flaunt the cool and handsome image his schoolmates known him for but Hyukjae, more often than not, won’t even give a about it. Hyukjae knew how much of a dork he was, the only one in their entire school to be honest, so why he should bother impressing the girl when he knew she would not even care. In the short amount of time they’ve been together, one thing Kyuhyun knew about Hyukjae was when you want her to notice you, you should be nothing but yourself.   He chuckled, thinking how much he must really like this girl and how comfortable he was around the other. This, of course, didn’t went unnoticed since Hyukjae’s still watching him, checking if his burnt tongue stupidity will cause him a trip to the hospital. “What’s so funny?”, she asked and Kyuhyun shook his head, muttering an incoherent ‘nothing’ since he had his tongue out, with an ice cube (a new one) still pressed on it to appease the pain. “If nothing’s funny then stop laughing. I should be the one doing that really, I mean look at you.. you look like a dog.”   The boy chuckled, not even in the slightest bit offended with the remark, exactly the reason why he liked the redhead. Feeling his tongue’s no longer on fire, Kyuhyun wiped his face and Hyukjae took it as a sign that he’s indeed alright.   “You’re so careless.”, Hyukjae remarked, getting her own piece of the meat and puffing air into it to be sure she wouldn’t end up like Kyuhyun. The boy cocked an eyebrow, moving on his previous position with his chin resting on his palm as he stared at Hyukjae.   “Well you weren’t listening.”, he commented and Hyukjae lifted her gaze to meet his and Kyuhyun just smiled a tight-lip one. “It’s not that but..”, Hyukjae wanted to deny but who was she kidding right? She knew and Kyuhyun knew she wasn’t really being attentive earlier and she’s feeling a bit guilty because it’s obvious that Kyuhyun was really excited about this, so instead of bluffing Hyukjae led the topic elsewhere.   “But really Kyuhyun..”, she started, an arm spread wide, emphasizing the place. “Date? In a supermarket?”, she said, an amused smile on her face as Kyuhyun shrugged. “What? Don’t you find it romantic? This is where we first met.”, the boy grinned, wiggling his eyebrows in an attempt to be greasy. Hyukjae snorted at the sight. “Well I’m sorry to burst your bubble Mr. Greaseball, but here’s not the place where we first saw each other. It’s in school, in the Scholar Club’s room, with you shaking your as you danced KARA’s—“ “Alright, alright, I got it okay? I got it. You don’t need to remind me, aish.”, the boy rolled his eyes, not even hiding his displeasure and the fact that Hyukjae’s laughing just like how she mocked him then wasn’t really nice to see.   “I was rushed okay? Like who would have thought you would actually ask me out, I mean you have a boyfriend and.. you know..”, Kyuhyun chose to leave his sentence hanging, getting another serving of the grilled meat and some japchae, while Hyukjae choked on her own, taking the cranberry juice (since Kyuhyun had her glass of water) and sipped in to stop the coughs.   Kyuhyun continued munching on his meal, and Hyukjae’s tactful enough to sense that the boy’s waiting for an explanation, but not really. Kyuhyun’s never been one to meddle in someone else’s life and Hyukjae knew he won’t insist on knowing if she wouldn’t want to tell.   The thing was, Hyukjae herself wasn’t even sure of the right things to say to explain what happened. It’s a little too fast to be honest, so swift she had only realized what occurred when she was holding her phone, Kyuhyun’s number on the screen as her thumb hovered on top of the Call button.   - Hyukjae didn’t understand. As far as she remembered, they were having fun, laughing with Donghae’s family and the rest of their friends as they play by the seashore. And then right out of the blue, Donghae sputtered words that Hyukjae should date Kyuhyun. To say that it caught her off-guard would be the understatement of the year, because Hyukjae was beyond knocked for six. Just what the—   Donghae didn’t actually say anything afterwards. He just broke it out like that. No explanations, reasons, or follow-up statements that came after. It was odd of course, not to mention that Donghae chose to ignore her throughout the whole trip and only when they were back to Seoul did the boy decided to talk to her.   “Okay, I know it had been abrupt but.. why don’t you try on Kyuhyun? I mean, he likes you and it won’t be too hard for you to like him back if you give it a chance.”, Hyukjae didn’t remember how Donghae looked like back then, because all that registered to her was the burning anger she’s starting to feel towards Donghae. “Why are you bringing this up all of a sudden?” “I-I.. w-well, why wouldn’t I bring this up? This is what we signed for, aren’t we?” “I don’t remember signing anything.” “Hyukjae, you get the point. This is what we’re supposed to be doing, what you’re supposed to be doing. You should.. start meeting people and.. f-fall in love..”   Donghae wasn’t able to meet her gaze, but then again Hyukjae pondered it was a good a thing because that way he wouldn’t see how hurt she was.   Are you that edgy to get rid of me?   It was when Donghae looked back at her with his fretful eyes did Hyukjae came to comprehend that she had said those words out loud. “N-No, Hyukjae.. i-it’s not that—“ “It’s fine.”, she cut him off even before he could speak words that would only hurt her more. “I’ve always thought this was getting too long anyway, I’m holding you for so long and I apologize.”, she uttered, turning her back from the boy as she unpacked her things. “Maybe Kyuhyun’s not bad, I-I’ll.. I’ll give him a call.”, she informed, and perhaps it was her imagination but when Donghae didn’t say or do anything afterwards, maybe he wanted to take his words back.    But
