Chapter 43 : Impulse
Poison Flower (ExoVelvet fic)Sehun sat down on the floor just a few steps from the television. Baekhyun, and Ji Yeon, who apparently came home early after work, were seated on the couch while Jongin stayed pacing at the back clutching onto his phone.
"Anything?" Baekhyun stretched his neck to ask Jongin, who shook his head and replied,
"No one is answering their phone. Are you positive that D.O took his with him?"
"Yes, I saw him take his but...well, he's not really the type that answers his phone in a billion years anyway...Turn up the volume, Sehun!"
Sehun obeyed Baekhyun and increased the volume making the squeaky voice of the lady reading the news be heard more clearly.
"...It was reported that the incident took place last night around midnight. The neighbors have called the police multiple times saying that they were hearing yells and loud noises of wreckage and people being beaten from the very private house. However, there were no eye witnesses. The said house was then set on fire. No bodies were found leaving many to flee the neighborhood as people are beginning to wonder if this was a work of some unholy spirits..."
The photograph of the the partly burnt house sent Baekhyun to sigh seeing it like that. He wondered if Xiumin would be mad to ever see his house all ripped apart and wrecked. But then again, Baekhyun knew Xiumin was never the possessive type. He would gladly let it go anyway.
"...Next, in the news we have a top star rejecting the posts circulating on social media of some sasaeng fans who are deliberately claiming they have his red underwear. The star had to say only this..."I'm sorry, but I wear only black"... clearing up most doubts of his fans who may or may not have been interested in the color of underwear he wears..."
"Ugh I can't believe that even made to the news," Baekhyun sighed looking at the large picture of a red underwear on the screen right next to the lady who was continuing to read the news.
Ji Yeon couldn't help but chuckle.
The four of them had gathered up to watch the news. Baekhyun's prediction of the incident from last night making it to the news came true, except it wasn't as exaggerated as he thought it would be. And it seemed like the town folk were very much bold enough to believe they were being haunted, putting the worries of the ones, who were waiting for the news of their burnt down house, to rest (almost).
In a while, Seulgi, who came home after some of her extra classes she was taking because of her exams that were coming up in a few weeks time, too joined them and sat next to Sehun on the floor with her dinner in a small box. Jongin too sat on the other side of Sehun making Sehun suspicious of whether the both of them were planning to do something to him. But nothing happened and everyone in the apartment continued watching the TV, surviving through the cheesy dramas that were airing, till maybe around ten that night and one by one started going to bed.
Ji Yeon was the first to leave asking Sehun to make sure he checks up on Suho, who was moved into Seulgi's room and had not woken up yet.
Seulgi finished up her dinner and was cleaning up the kitchen when the three boys sat around the couch and tried deciding which two were going to sleep with Suho in the room and who was going to take the couch.
"I'll take the couch," Sehun volunteered but Baekhyun severely argued back saying that they should be fair and play a game and decide that.
"Fine then. You take the couch," Sehun gladly gave it to Baekhyun for he seemed like he wanted the couch and not the mattress on the floor.
"No NO! I was saying we should play a game and decide!"
Seulgi chuckled listening to them argue. Her home seemed more lively with them around and she liked it this way.
Jongin, who seemed tired, just stood up not wanting to listen to the stupid argument going on and replied back,
"I don't want to sleep on the couch so I'm going to go to the room. Good night."
Jongin walked away leaving Baekhyun to argue back saying he should stay. Eventually, Seulgi too left after cleaning up seeing Baekhyun and Sehun still at the couch trying to be possessive of their chances.
Seulgi went to her mother's room to see Ji Yeon already asleep. Making sure not to make any noise, Seulgi settled down at a corner under a small light and began finishing up the homework she barely touched in school. She didn't expect it but it was taking longer than predicted. So, wanting to grab something to munch away and keep her from falling asleep she stepped out of the room into a dark hallway. Seemed like the others have somehow decided to go to bed. She walked to the kitchen in the dark and grabbed some cookies. She tip toed her way back thinking about her homework when she heard a faint voice speak up.
"I was just glad Jongin and Kris hyung were around. Things just blew up, didn't they? We were only back together for less than a day and boom!...Everything messed up once more," Baekhyun seemed to be speaking to someone, while lying on the couch.
Seulgi squinted her eyes taking a step in front and hiding behind the wall. She peeked to see someone sitting on the floor hugging his knees next to Baekhyun.
"I wonder if Chanyeol hyung is okay. He got hurt pretty bad too. But I'm surprised Kai is still holding on. I thought he'd pass out anytime during all that last night," Sehun's voice spoke making Seulgi stop peeking, for she was only interested in knowing who Baekhyun was talking with, and turn back to go to the room.
"I just feel sorry for Jongin. Just knowing that he has to be ready the next time he meets Lay and let him heal him, and forget who he is right now must be...painful. Urgh...We could have just healed him when we had the chance and not drag it out this much. Things could have gone better for him..."
Seulgi froze instantly hearing Baekhyun talk about Jongin's seemingly undetectable situation. Seulgi knew that there would be a day Jongin would never know who he was while he was being poisoned, but after listening to Baekhyun say that that date must be around the corner, she couldn't help but let herself stop for a moment and try processing as to what she just heard.
She stayed there listening to Baekhyun talked through the deal Lay and Jongin had made and how everything that was happening now had already guaranteed the fact that Lay wouldn't spare any chances to heal him right away the very next time he sees Jongin. The conversation that was being overheard was having a surprising toll on Seulgi.
She walked away hearing Baekhyun go back onto declaring that Sehun should go to bed, and she stumbled back in her mother's room at the corner trying to get back onto finishing up her homework.
But Seulgi couldn't make up her mind to concentrate anymore, leading to her ending up grabbing a piece of paper and sketching whatever that came into her mind to calm herself down. She drew birds, trees, the sunset, rain...numerous sketches of heavy rain making streams and rivers pour out.
Finally, after which seemed like a good hour, she picked up the small case that held all her random drawings and she opened it to push the paper inside. However, she ended up taking her older sketches out to suddenly walk down the memory lane. The small sketches of her capturing the small moments she spent with all of them at the mysterious house were like photographs of her memory. She stopped and stared at one particular sketch carefully drawn by her. It was one of those that went way back to the first time Jongin teleported her with him to a roof of the supposedly tallest building in the country. But her face remained gloomy as a thought ran past her mind.
He won't remember anything, will he? He won't remember...me...
Seulgi suddenly felt like an impulsive teenager wanting to just break something. But she held everything in seated there feeling like her entire life had just let her down. She was suddenly beginning to accept that she was expecting Jongin to feel the same way she was feeling about him, but knowing that it wouldn't make any difference anyway, for he wouldn't remember in the end, she felt like something stabbed her heart out of nowhere. She sighed seeing that even her fate was so twisted to the point that even when he was bound to leave, for this wasn't his world, she still wasn't lucky enough for him to at least remember her.
It was past mid night when Seulgi decided she just needed to step out of the room to clear her head in order to at least attempt on finishing her homework that was due the next day.
She walked out in the dark to see that Baekhyun and Sehun were no longer there. Seulgi was sure Sehun was sent to the room and Baekhyun had got the couch like he wanted to anyway. She walked across the living room (watching someone fast asleep under the blanket laid out covering the entire couch) to the glass door, which was slightly open letting in the night breeze, leading out to the tiny balcony.
She opened it and stepped out to suddenly jump back seeing someone at the corner leaning against the barely stable railing and looking up at the sky. Seulgi stared at him till he noticed her and suddenly startle back as well.
"Why are you here?" Jongin asked cracking his voice.
"It's my house. I go where ever I want to," Seulgi came out harsh than she expected sending her to rethink why she replied like that.
Jongin only nodded.
"How long were you here?" Seulgi asked wondering whether he was here when Sehun and Baekhyun were having their little conversation back then.
"Just came a couple minutes ago. Couldn't sleep."
"Same."
The both of them involuntarily looked up at the sky together. There were not many stars. Just a few here and there, but none of them complained about it. Just a few was just enough.
Seulgi suddenly found her tongue itching to ask Jongin the very questions that have been bothering her since few hours back. She wanted to know whether he was okay, whether he was ready. And just as she pulled up all the courage to go for it, Jongin spoke making her close right away and look ahead not wanting to meet his eyes.
"How's school? I hear exams are around the corner. Your mother says you've become much better and that she's not so worried."
"Oh yeah, I've been studying, you know, to pass the final exams just enough to get a job in the future."
"What are you thinking about doing? A nurse like your mother?"
Seulgi chuckled listening to Jongin give her unreachable options. But then again, she didn't want to let him know she was planning on settling for a small job after high school just enough to have food on the table and a descent roof over her head.
"Maybe something else. I'll have to think about it," Seulgi replied making Jongin smack his lips and turn to her to berate her saying,
"What? You'll think about it? You'll be done with high school in a couple of months and you'll just think about it? I suppose your head is just filled with other things..." Jongin turned ahead to suddenly smirk and smile cheekily before continuing, "...You don't even have a boyfriend to keep your mind occupied so much, I wonder what's so important that you are too busy not to be thinking about your future--"
But Jongin stopped speaking hearing Seulgi smirk back. He looked at her to see her rolling her eyes, annoyed.
"Wah! You sound just like this good for nothing idiot I met in school today, you know?"
Seulgi spoke back remembering the Yoongi guy who got on Seulgi's nerves for telling no guy would like her personality.
"Good for nothing idiot?" Jongin got interested and turned to Seulgi resting his back comfortably against the railing.
"Yeah, he kept saying that I'd never impress a guy...tsk."
"Well, not that I want to add fuel to the fire but you've never gone out--"
"That doesn't mean I'm incapable of impressing a guy!"
Seulgi blew up making Jongin chuckle. But Jongin didn't back down either. It was dead of the night, he was tired yet couldn't bring his eyes to close and he just wanted to annoy Seulgi.
"Oh come on! The guy is only interpreting what he's seeing, is he not? You can't judge him like that," Jongin shook his head making Seulgi snap back harshly,
"He was the one who was judging me!"
But Jongin only laughed and stayed quiet to let Seulgi steam off before he replied back in a soothing voice making Seulgi's heart flutter just hearing the first word,
"He's just flirting with
