Chapter 57 – Japan’s Siblings

Youngest of Pieces: Five Years in History (9)

“What about this one?” Hannah asks and holds up a t-shirt for Kyung Ho to see. He reaches for the t-shirt to look at it in the mirror.

Kyung Ho is in Japan for a press-conference this afternoon, and the time before that he is spending with Hannah filming Good Sister, which they will film until tomorrow but at the moment the two of them are out shopping this rainy Tuesday. The angry or upset Hannah from two days ago is gone when she is around Kyung Ho; it isn’t hard to be in a good mood around him. For today’s filming Hannah is wearing a chic black style; v-neck dolman sleeve top and skinny jeans in black with a brown belt, the top tugged in slightly, a long necklace and sneakers. She is wearing a jacket too to not be cold. Shopping with Kyung Ho is thousand times better than shopping with anyone else. Most people Hannah knows take at least half an hour in each store, to just look around, while Kyung Ho and Hannah are the same; they walk in, quickly look through and if they don’t find anything within a few minutes they move on. Though Kyung Ho says he can pay himself, when they find two t-shirts and a sweater for him, Hannah pays it – just because she is quickly talking to the saleswoman in Japanese and pays for it before he even understands what she is doing.

They move on walking down the street, both of them seeing a record store from a distance and decide to go in there. The man working there greets them in the usual ‘welcome’ phrase and Hannah smiles politely back when heading inside with Kyung Ho; the little boy repeats ‘welcome’ to the man, making Hannah laughs.

“It means welcome in Japanese,” she laughs at him. “You don’t have to say anything back, a smile is enough.”

“Ah,” Kyung Ho nods, walking around with his eyes searching for something.

Hannah steps while he keeps walking among the music shelves, Hannah smiling and glances at the camera-man who films her from the side, seeing that she has stopped right next to a poster of 5 Pieces’ Japanese single.

“Nuna!” Kyung Ho calls, not seen behind the shelves while she can see the camera-man following him.

“Come look,” Hannah tells him in a light voice, smiling wider when Kyung Ho comes hurrying over to her. She gives a not at the poster and Kyung Ho looks, coming closer to look even closer.

“That’s you?” he sounds doubtful, making Hannah laugh.

“What do you mean ‘that’s you’? Of course it is, who else would it be…?” Hannah laughs but ends with a pout, looking up at the pretty five girls. “Maybe it’s too colourful for you to see.”

Kyung Ho smiles up at her. He is excited to be in Tokyo; he has been here before, but not like this and it is exciting for him. The music in the store changes, and Hannah starts laughing right away, squatting down to hide her face in her hands.

“They changed the song when we came in,” Hannah laughs to the camera, suddenly feeling shy as 5 Pieces’ [Let’s Go] is playing. Hannah points for Kyung Ho to look at the single next to the poster, the same colourful cover on them. She pretends to not hear the music, embarrassed that the salesman changed the song when seeing them walk in, but Kyung Ho is bouncing to the song, looking at the single. He doesn’t know Japanese so he puts down the single and bounces around in search for more familiar music. Hannah is lip-synching after him, each time she catches herself doing it she stops, just to continue after a few seconds because another addicted part starts.

“Oh,” Kyung Ho stops bouncing and points over at the wall where a TV-screen is showing the promotional video for the song playing in the store. Hannah gets a little taken back by the sight too, blinking in confusion before looking somewhere else as she right before he took her attention had found SNSD’s Japanese album.

Kyung Ho looks fascinated by the [Let’s Go!] PV, looking at it until the end and he laughs at the ending of the video when the ladies have throws their hands up in the air after Hannah’s last LET’S GO and they are running away with the simple background. He says that it is cute, smiling with his tongue peeking out between his teeth. The next video and song begins to play and Kyung Ho’s eyes widens at the sudden dark concept – but he sees right away that it is 5 Pieces. The cool PV for last year’s hit song [Run Out] is playing and it starts off with the ladies dancing, ily and simply moving their bodies to the music and Kyung ho is just staring at the sudden change. It is a charismatic song, the ladies look so cool.

For the solo-interview, he will be asked how it was to see 5 Pieces’ videos in the store, and Kyung Ho will get big eyes. “They looked so cool… Like artists you see on TV.” No one corrects him that they are artists you see on TV.

Standing over by some other music, Hannah starts to sing along to her part in the beginning of the song that plays in the store. She smiles at Kyung Ho when he comes hurrying over to her.

“This is our biggest song in Japan,” Hannah tells him. “It made us cry many times.”

“Why did you cry?” Kyung Ho wonders, looking at the CDs she is standing by.

“Um…” Hannah hesitates to what she should say, “A lot of emotional things happened thanks to this song.”

“Good things?” Kyung Ho looks up at her, not knowing at all what she is talking about but wanting to know what it is she hasn’t told him before.

Hannah smiles and nods, walking a little further down the shelves. “A lot of good things,” she answers.

Of course they will ask her at the solo-interview. Hannah will sit there and smile as the PD mentions it, asking what good things it was that she didn’t tell Kyung Ho. “We are doubted a lot. Though we have our fans supporting us, it was difficult to promote in Japan with 5 Pieces, but with that song it felt like we proved that we can do promotions in Japan too… It opened up many doors for us, I think.

After looking around a little, Kyung Ho asks Hannah if the store only has 5 Pieces’ newest single. They find a lot of Korean singer’s albums and singles, but only [Let’s Go!] among 5 Pieces. He pushes Hannah to go ask the salesman and eventually she does, with Kyung Ho looking from afar and listening to the Japanese conversation he can not understand. The salesman helps Hannah, walking over to show them and Hannah looks surprised when seeing the many singles and albums of 5 Pieces; mostly Japanese but a few Koreans too, and it is the different versions and covers of the Japanese ones. Hannah thanks the salesman and starts talking to Kyung Ho who is looking at every CD he can one by one, looking at 5 Pieces with deep concentration.

“I’m buying this one,” Kyung Ho decides after a long, long time, showing Hannah the first full-length Japanese album [Run Out].

“It’s expensive,” Hannah tells him, trying to convince him to let her pay for it.

“Nuna, it’s your album… You’re not supposed to say it is expensive.”

“It’s expensive for you,” Hannah changes her words, walking with him towards the counter. “Then I’ll let you handle it all by yourself then.”

Kyung Ho looks up at Hannah with a pout, hesitating a little but decides he can do it himself. He puts the album down on the counter, looking nervously at the salesman to be prepared to listen clearly to whatever is being said in Japanese, while Hannah just stands next to him to watch it all.

The salesman says the price to Kyung Ho before telling Hannah that he is a big fan, and Kyung Ho is just clueless looking at the Japanese money he has in his wallet. Hannah smiles at the salesman, talking in Japanese to him and knowing that Kyung Ho is panicking when he just places a lot of money on the counter. She is fast to put away half of it, taking it back to Kyung Ho.

In Japanese she talks to the salesman; “It’s his first time paying for himself.”

“Ahh… Korean actor, right?” the salesman asks with a glance at the nervous Kyung Ho who is looking at how the salesman counts the money.

“Yes,” Hannah nods. “He is here to promote a Korean movie. If you got the time, please watch it. It’s very good.”

“Oh, if 5 Pieces recommends it, I will definitely watch it,” the salesman says with a big smile, turning to Kyung Ho while giving him money back. He tells Kyung Ho to be careful with his money, making Hannah laugh as Kyung Ho just says ‘thank you’, thinking he is saying a phrase Japanese people might say when giving back money – what does he know – and the salesman just smiles at the boy when giving him the album in a plastic bag, “Could I get an autograph?” the salesman asks Hannah, reaching for pen and paper.

“Yeah, sure,” Hannah nods, asking Kyung Ho in Korean if that is alright for him.

Kyung Ho thinks it’s alright, just looking in his bag at the album.

When they step out of the store, Kyung Ho says it was an expensive album. Hannah bursts out laughing, asking if he wants money from her, asking if he wants to go back with it, but Kyung Ho laughs and holds on to it tightly, saying he will keep it.

They walk around some more, going in some stores but mostly just walking around searching for something to eat. While walking around, it becomes a little crowded, and the cameras can’t film from a single angle without getting people on the other side of the siblings, all the focus is on them. They recognized Hannah, more and more people seem to follow them and it’s clear that Kyung Ho gets a little taken back by it when he holds on to Hannah’s hand tightly. Hannah keeps walking, not making a big deal out of it other than the view gets a little bad because people are in the way.

Kyung Ho says something, but Hannah can’t hear so she leans down a little. “I’m tired,” Kyung Ho pouts, looking at her arm, embarrassed because of all the people. Hannah hugs his hand, telling him they will go eat.

Even when finding a restaurant and they goes inside, Kyung Ho is not letting go of her hand; he looks behind them to see the crowd waiting outside. They get a seat on the second floor, away from all eyes, and when getting the menu, Hannah tells Kyung Ho to just pick whatever he wants to eat.

“Do they have sushi here?” he wonders, looking at the pictures of the food as he can’t read what it says on the menu.

Hannah nods and looks through her own menu. “Sushi… what else?”

It takes ten minutes because he points at most things and asks what it is, and Hannah doesn’t always have the answer so the waitress nearby gets to explain it when she comes to take their order. Sushi and noodles are the chosen two, Kyung Ho says that are the two first things he thinks of when mentioning Japanese food. While waiting for the food to come, Kyung Ho walks over to the window to try look down on the street, seeing people lingering around down there.

“Nuna, it’s crowded…” he tells her, coming back to the table when the food comes. “Is it always like that?”

Hannah shrugs her shoulder, keeping an eye on where the waitress puts down the food to thank her when she is done. “Most of the time,” she tells Kyung Ho, “You’ll experience it a lot – the salesman at the store knew you are an actor.”

“Nuna,” Kyung Ho breathes out, sounding as if she is hopeless, “Do you have many brothers? Who else would walk with you like this if not me?”

She laughs at that, Kyung Ho thinking people that know Hannah knows she has a younger brother in Korea, and who else would it be but this handsome little actor? He’s funny. With the food on the table, Kyung Ho starts asking questions again, pointing at every piece of sushi and asking what kind of sauce it is, even asking what it is in the noodles so Hannah ends up asking if he has never eaten noodles before and Kyung Ho’s questions softens up after that. He doesn’t like the sushi all that much, eating it with his fingers when failing with the chopsticks, but after two bites he moves on to the noodles instead so Hannah eats the sushi.

They enjoy the meal, Hannah doesn’t eat much other than the sushi and Kyung Ho doesn’t eat more than usually either. So when they leave it is surprisingly a lot of food left, even if Hannah did try to eat as much as possible.

The highlight for Kyung Ho of the day is when they visit an amusement park, just he and Hannah. He laughs so much and runs around, liking that they aren’t followed by fans even if people take pictures of them when they walk by; there aren’t a lot of people there at all because of the rain, but it doesn’t stop these two from running around and getting on the rides, wearing raincoats at the amusement park. Hannah has a lot of fun too, becoming a child with Kyung Ho. She loves amusement parks, to go on the fun rides and just be a child, and Kyung Ho is in a hurry to go on as many rides they have time for. More than once when they are there, 5 Pieces’ [Let’s Go!] is heard. Maybe the fourth time Hannah hears it, Kyung Ho bursts out in excitement that 5 Pieces’ song is played. He is overly excited at the amusement park.

After the amusement park they go to the press-conference. Hannah goes with him, not sure if she acts manager or family members when helping him to remember his lines and she gets to greet the other co-stars too. Hannah is in the background with Kyung Ho at the event, though the actors take more notice of her and some even gets a surprise to see a member of 5 Pieces there.

She is watching the press-conference too, from the side where she won’t be seen, just to keep an eye on him. Good Sister films them both; Kyung Ho being nervous sitting with his co-stars, Hannah watching from afar, and how Kyung Ho does his introduction well in Japanese (Hannah looks proud when he has done his introduction, laughing and telling the camera that Kyung Ho looks happy to have pulled that off).

One question that Kyung Ho gets during the press-conference is if he got any help from Hannah to prepare for the role and if she gave him some advice when coming to Japan. The press-conference is in Korean, they have people translating, but the introduction is more impressive if they do it in Japanese which is what they were practicing earlier.

“Hannah is always very helpful and supportive, helping me with my lines and giving me a lot of advice on my acting, she helped me a lot for this role too since it is my first movie,” Kyung Ho starts to say, not seeing Hannah happily smiling from afar at him. “When I said I am going to Japan for this promotion, I got a lot of help to learn some basic Japanese… She is actually promoting in Japan now too so we went to an amusement park and went out for lunch earlier, it was really fun – I hope I get to come to Japan many times to experience more.”

The journalists writes like crazy when he mentions the amusement park and lunch, continuing with question about that until people say the questions are getting a little out of hand as it is more an interview about Hannah. Kyung Ho does super well though, praising Japan and talking great about the movie.

The event comes to an end and Hannah is smiling with her hands up, so when Kyung Ho comes running to her he gives her a high-ten.

“How did I do?” he asks right away, “Did I say something wrong? All words disappeared when I was there… Should I have said something different?”

“You did well, you did well,” Hannah nods at him like an old lady, “You were very charming.”

“Are we getting ice cream now?” Kyung Ho asks when they are heading out after an interview and bowing to his co-stars, going out with Hannah. He is still excited.

Before they have to go for Hannah’s event (Kyung Ho’s schedule is done now), they have talked about getting ice cream that Hannah once tried and wants to share with him – ice cream burger. They get a ride most of the way, then walks the rest as the TV program won’t air them in the car. The rain has stopped again though, so it is a refreshing walk.

It’s no surprise that after just a few minutes, a few people are following them. Three high school girls in uniforms are walking next to them, holding cell phones up. A couple walks on their other side, arms linked and just looking, having some distance and Hannah can hear the girl say it is so cute when seeing Kyung Ho holding Hannah’s hand.

They walk for minutes, Hannah starts glancing around.

“I think we walked by it…” she tells Kyung Ho, slowing down her steps.

“You said you knew where we are going,” Kyung Ho comments.

Hannah hugs his hand in a warning, turning to their right at the three high school girls, asking them in Japanese if they know where the ice cream stand is.

“Its right in front,” one of them answers after thinking a bit, points forward, “Just around the corner.”

“It’s around the corner?” Hannah asks, looking in front of them to try remembering if it is there. “Okay, thank you,” she smiles at the girls.

“Excuse me…” the couple on her left ask, some people are behind them too, following. “Could I get an autograph?”

He holds out a piece of paper that he had gotten from his girlfriend, the girlfriend is taking out a pen from her bag. As soon as she has gotten the question, Hannah looks at Kyung Ho to ask if it is okay. He nods and holds on to the sleeve of her jacket as she needs her hand, and giving one autograph means others wants too. The three high school students hurries to take out their writing pads to get an autograph too, but while Hannah is busy signing they ask Kyung Ho for one instead. He just looks dumbstruck at them, not understanding other than one of the girls holding out her pen and pad to him.

Hannah gives the girl a glance.

“I have been watching your show together,” the girl says happily when seeing Hannah glance at her. “You are really adorable, like real siblings.”

“Thank you,” Hannah smiles at the couple and turns to the high school girls to sign for them too, telling Kyung Ho in Korean that the girl has seen him on TV and wants his autograph. He says ‘thank you’ in Japanese when giving his autograph.

“Are you enjoying Tokyo?” the girl asks them both in Japanese, her two friends wanting Hannah’s autograph too.

“We are,” Hannah answers, smiling happily at her, “It is sad that it has been raining most day but we have had fun. You can never be bored in Japan.”

The girls giggle at Hannah’s words and she smiles at them, seeing another person wanting to take a picture of her and she gives a sweet peace-sign, the girl squealing at Hannah not turning away.

When they are done, Hannah takes Kyung Hi’s hand and thank the people for being so kind and they thank them for being so kind and they keep following Hannah and Kyung Ho but keeps a little more distance as the celebrities were kind to take pictures and give them autographs. It’s not many people, and when noticing that they are very polite Kyung Ho isn’t that awkward anymore, actually impressed when noticing the fans steps away a bit. Hannah just smiles at his amazement.

The girl was right of the location, around the corner the ice cream stand is and when walking up to it, the people behind them forms some kind of circle go get a good view, the cameras standing between fans and Hannah/Kyung Ho.

“Oh, you’re in 5 Pieces, aren’t you?” the old lady laughs when seeing Hannah stand and look at the ice cream. “I went to your concert with my grandchildren last year.”

“Ah, really? Thank you,” Hannah laughs, embarrassed that she is recognized at every corner of the city, even the camera crew seems a little taken back at it. Sure she is a foreigner from top to toe, but it can not be that easy to see her when there are a lot of tourists in Japan.

“What could I get you?” the lady asks, glancing from Hannah to Kyung Ho and back.

“Two ice cream burgers, please,” Hannah tells her and the lady says it is a good choice. Kyung Ho is just looking at the many different flavours.

“Ask her if she knows who I am,” Kyung Ho wonders. “Does she watch dramas?”

Hannah does as he asks, asking the old lady in Japanese if she watches Korean dramas and if she knows Kim Kyung Ho. The old lady gives him a look. “Not sure if I have seen his drama… But I saw a commercial with him,” the lady answers while making the ice cream burgers. “A really cute boy.”

“She said I’m cute?” Kyung Ho asks before Hannah can translate.

“Ya, aren’t you a little too excited?” Hannah asks him with a laugh. It is so weird going from Japanese to Korean.

They get their ice cream burgers, thanking the old lady with a laugh and steps aside to eat.

5 Pieces’ morning starts early. They get ready in the apartment with clothes, hair and make-up while Kyung Ho is sleeping. Last year when he visited them in Japan he got to sleep in Hannah’s room, Emelia slept on the sofa, but this time it is Hannah sleeping on the sofa as she already has her quilt and pillow there. They prepare a simple breakfast to eat too, 5 Pieces, Kyung Ho, managers and stylists all together in the Japanese apartment.

They wake Kyung Ho up for him to eat and get dressed, but his schedule today is to film Good Sister when following 5 Pieces on their schedule.

In the van they sit three in the back, three in the middle, a camera-man at the passenger seat, their Japanese manager Kawayama drives and the others (managers, stylists and TV crew) are in another van. Kyung Ho is playing games on Emelia’s tablet in the van, the ladies are quietly waking up and talking about today’s recording that they are on the way to now. A brief interview and a performance of [Let’s Go] that starts around nine, which means they are there one and a half hour earlier to the live filming, to rehearse and go through the program with the director and hosts.

Kyung Ho is backstage, curious at how things are like in Japan and whining when Emelia jokingly tells him he should do his homework – he has homework to do, but he decided with Hannah last night to do it in the afternoon – which Emelia knows but she is just joking with him.

The live TV takes about forty minutes because the ladies have an appearance in the beginning, then a brief interview and at the end they perform. Afterwards they eat a bit before heading to the next schedule; this part is where Kyung Ho gets super bored. 5 Pieces are part of a anti-bullying movement called PICTURE, and to not just be faces on posters around the country, the ladies spend hours today making visits at different schools in Tokyo. Half the day is spent doing that, from lunch-time to when school ends, making appearances to listen to the principal at each school give a speech and the ladies say a few things about the movement and so on. It is to give courage to students who is bullied, or witness it or is the bully to stop bullying it all forms in school. They perform last year’s ballad song [What Would It Look Like] at some of the schools, a touching ballad about taking care of each other and the world, and at some schools they liven up the mood with [Let’s Go!]. While 5 Pieces are doing this, Kyung Ho sits in the van the whole time. A few times he gets out, but since it is raining he is told my the manager to not go out unless there is roof over his head so Kyung Ho plays games on Emelia’s tablet and he is moving around, he looks for something to eat, he is making grimaces at the camera, he pretends to sleep but ends up getting more restless, he plays music, he looks out the window and asking when they are coming back… It is a long day for him, though half of the time he is playing games on the tablet. He even does some of his homework, the easiest part, before he gets bored of it.

He is more than happy when they go to a restaurant to eat dinner, hearing the ladies talk and joining the conversations, happy to not be stuck in the van.

But the schedule isn’t done. After dinner they go to where their next event will be held, to perform, but since they are early they have some free time backstage where they all help Kyung Ho with his homework (it’s not like they do it for him, they just help him to think right to figure out the answer) but Kyung Ho is a bright kid, he does his homework quickly so they all end up going outside where the rain has stopped and they are throwing a ball back and forth between each other, the ladies kind of making up for having him sit in the van most of the day.

After the event, Kyung Ho will go back to Korea – the crew goes with him as the filming ends. Hannah hugs him tightly, saying they will see each other some time later, wishing him a safe trip back home and saying she hope he had fun and a lot of other things. He ssays he had fun, a lot of fun, he don’t want to go back to Korea because that means school and work – he seems to prefer being bored in a van – but still leaves so the ladies can go on their evening radio and then go on another TV performance.

It’s over midnight when their schedule ends and the ladies head home to sleep, knowing that they are taking the earliest flight to Sapporo in the morning to be there at eight to start their schedule right away. They also know that it is now March 6 – twenty-two years ago, Emelia was born – it is Emelia’s birthday this day.

They don’t do much other than congratulating Emelia when heading to Sapporo, tired and planning other things. What to do when the oldest member is turning 22? In the word of 5 Pieces, becoming a year older is a big deal and that one person is “unlucky” if her birthday is on a day where they have a schedule. Guess what: 5 Pieces have a schedule today.

5 Pieces’ starts off their morning in snowy and beautiful Sapporo with a radio appearance, and the DJ gets such a surprise when the ladies tries to answer questions by imitating Emelia.

“So I think it is like that,” Julia says in a low voice, speaking the little Japanese she knows, and they laugh at her way to sound more like a man than Emelia.

“What is going on!” the DJ laughs, amused by the bright ladies in the morning. Emelia hits Julia on the arm though, hitting each person who imitates her with a laugh.

“It’s my birthday today,” Emelia answers, holding on to Julia’s shoulder to not let her imitate her again. But there are three more members.

“Emelia’s birthday, yo,” Carolina imitates and they all laugh louder. Hannah laughs silently, leaning her head back to make a sound because she doesn’t want to laugh loudly in front of the microphones.

“It’s your birthday!” the DJ bursts out. “Congratulations!”

“Thank you,” Maria says in a low voice.

“I’m being targeted here!” Emelia cries out at the ladies in Japanese and Hannah is the one laughing loudly at that because she says ‘targeted’ like true Japanese. “They think I won’t punish them if they make fun of me on my birthday, but I want to warn them that there is a lot of snow outside, and we are spending the whole day here.”

“Ooooh…” the DJ sounds impressed. “The birthday child is threatening the members with Sapporo’s white snow.”

“Maria will accept the punishment,” Hannah says in Japanese to the DJ and Emelia, speaking clearly and nodding her head as if she makes that decision. “She loves the snow, so I think she will like being punished.”

The ladies are doing well, being entertaining but not going overboard. The DJ can’t stop smiling during the radio visit, and she wishes them good luck out in the snow when the ladies finish the radio.

It’s not that much snow in Sapporo, but it is a thin layer of snow covering the streets and the sides are covered in snow, meaning that as soon as the ladies head outside they start running with Emelia making snowballs to throw at them.

“I didn’t imitate you!” Hannah whines when running away from Emelia.

“I don’t care,” Emelia says behind, throwing a snowball that doesn’t even reach half way. Hannah stops running and turns around, making a snowball of her own to protect her self in case Emelia comes again; now seeing Emelia running after Carolina who has squatted down by the snow in pretend she is invisible. All the girls starts laughing when Emelia runs right into her, making Carolina fall down on her . For the radio they wore simple clothes, they will change for the next event, so though their managers and stylists are watching with worry the ladies are playing in the snow like kids. They throw snowballs on each other and chase one another, not just Emelia but all of them.

Maria waves her phone in the air, motioning for Julia and Hannah to target Emelia; Maria films with her phone when the ladies starts throwing snowballs on one person, the target Emelia just hiding herself and laughing, screaming at them. Julia runs forward to try make Emelia fall, the two weak ones looking like they are hugging until Hannah joins in and make them fall laughing in the snow. Maria films a bit of it all to put together, then they are called back to the van to get ready for their school appearance before lunch.

{5P_PRINCESS: (video) Happy Birthday Emelia! My gift to you, from Sapporo ^^, mohahahahaha}

The school event goes well; it is at the two fan meets afterwards where the ladies continue to mess around with the birthday child. For the first fan meet when they are doing the signing, Hannah sitting next to Emelia does a lot of things to the rapper, getting caught every time. Their fight that has been on-going is gone for the day, instead having Hannah lean on Emelia’s shoulder to poke her with the headband that has pointy ears, she puts up a hand behind Emelia’s head (v-sign), she mumbles things when Emelia is talking (she gets hit for that), the fans love it all because they know it is Emelia’s birthday so all this focus on Emelia is for a reason, Hannah also takes Emelia’s pen when she isn’t looking so she receives a glare when the rapper do notice. The fans are really loud in Sapporo.

During the second fan meet, fans have prepared a birthday cake for Emelia, which the ladies were told backstage so when they are on the stage, Hannah out of nowhere starts singing Happy Birthday. Emelia thinks she is joking as they said they would celebrate backstage, hitting Hannah on the arm for her to be quiet, but the whole crowd start singing along and Hannah jumps happily for the success of starting the song and the staff brings out the cake.

“It is such a pretty cake, maybe we should save it?” Maria suggests, looking from the cake to Emelia. She is joking, but she sounds serious. The fans laugh. “We can keep it in the apartment and just look at it-”

“No,” Emelia cuts off and puts her finger on the cake to taste it, “It’s food – don’t stare at food, eat it.”

All of the ladies make fun of Emelia, doing all kind of things during the day like Hannah does. But Emelia has her own trick too. When they are in the van one time, she takes Maria’s cell phone when the leader head out for a moment, and she uploads a picture on Instagram with the other ladies (Emelia wearing pink glasses that Maria wears today for the promotions).

{Instagram, 5P_PRINCESS: Hacker EM, today’s main character – happy birthday to me, the members show me a lot of love today}

{Instagram, 5P_JULIA: Hacker EM here, today’s main character – happy birthday to me! Julia is busy eating my cake to see me taking this picture of her… kkk, it’s Carolina in the back too.}

{Instagram, 5P_HANNAH: Happy birthday! This is Hacker EM, the main character of the day – took this crazy picture after finishing up in Sapporo, they got no idea of where this picture is ending up at, kkkk HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME}

“Emelia!” Hannah cries out when seeing the picture of the ladies sitting in a row, the picture taken from the side and they are all doing weird faces after finishing an interview – Emelia held the cell phone out with her arm, Julia’s face the closest and Maria’s the furthest away. The reason Hannah cries is because Emelia had uploaded it on Hannah’s instagram; she had taken the phone from their manager, Hannah not knowing because she was busy talking to the interviewer.

“It’s my day,” Emelia proudly answers, stretching her arms up behind her head. “Too bad Carolina doesn’t have it too.”

“Have what?” the clueless mascot looks up from her cell phone.

Emelia just smirks, extremely happy to how she has managed to use the ladies cell phones to take a picture and upload it, only being caught afterwards – Julia hasn’t noticed it yet though. They are at the airport in Sapporo, waiting to board the plane and go back to Seoul to continue practice for their album comeback in the morning. Emelia let’s one arm fall down over the backrest next to her, the seat used for their jackets and Hannah sits on the other side of that seat. Emelia sighs when glancing at Hannah. The youngest has been laughing and fooling around today, she has been pretty normal when being with Kyung Ho too, beside from her sleeping- and eating habits, and Emelia knows that her mood is about to change too, it is just a matter of time.

“Maybe I should get Instagram? What do you think, Charlie?” Emelia wonders, taking the chance to talk to the youngest now when she isn’t mad all the time.

“Sure. Then you don’t have to use ours,” Hannah answers and give her a small smile.

“Ha-ha! You know it is always much more fun to use others than your own,” Emelia teases, liking the joke and smiling widely when Julia comes back from the bathroom. Hannah looks up too, only because Julia is groaning.

“I think I ate something bad…” Julia grimaces, taking a seat next to Carolina to hug on to her arm. “My stomach hurts…”

“Impossible; we have eaten the same things today,” Emelia says. “Or you ate snow earlier, I know Carolina did.”

“She didn’t,” Hannah laughs.

“I did,” Carolina looks up with big eyes. “Pure white snow – it is yummy.”

Hannah makes a face, disgusted as all she can see are these tiny, tiny, tiny little worms crawling around in the snow. Emelia nods at the youngest, probably knowing what she is thinking.

“Ladies,” Maria comes walking up to them with loud steps, holding something eatable in her hand – that is pretty much what the ladies look at when she comes.

“You’re eating again?” Julia grimaces, a hand on her bad stomach.

“Yeah… I’m planning on sleeping on the flight so I need to get some food in me before take-off. But ladies, it is SHINee’s concert this weekend and I was just asked if we want to come day one or day two.”

Hannah tries to swallow the saliva in , failing completely and she looks down on her fingers, fiddling on her nails in a try to seem occupied to not have to answer. She is not going this time.

“You do know it’s the International Women’s Day on the first day of their concert, right?” Emelia asks her.

Maria is quiet for a few seconds, just looking at Emelia while thinking of what date it is. “I know that…”

“What happens on that day?” Carolina wonders.

“We are performing at a foundation concert that evening,” Hannah answers in a low voice. She glances up at Maria who gives a ‘oh’ as if she didn’t know that either. “I guess we can’t go then”

“Don’t be silly, we’ll just have to go on the second day,” Maria chuckles and waves a hand at Hannah before going to take her seat. “And that day is a Sunday; I know for sure we only have dance practice that day.”

Emelia smiles at Hannah’s pale face to hear that, knowing too well that Hannah has no plans of going and that Maria has for the moment forgotten about Jonghyun because everyone have been in such great moods these past two days.

The talkative and playful Hannah is suddenly gone. Emelia notices because they sit next to each other on the plane; the youngest doesn’t eat nor sleep like the others, she just looks at the black view outside the window, lost in thoughts. Emelia really wants to know what is going on in that head of hers; why break up with the person you love? Is it because she was threatened? Is it because they were fighting?

“Charlie,” Emelia whispers her name, trying to be as much like Maria as possible in hope to not anger her childhood friend, putting a hand lightly on Hannah’s leg to get a reaction.

“Mm,” Hannah mumbles, not even opening or looking away from the window – what interesting could it be, it’s black out there.

“Can I ask a question without you getting mad at me?”

“Maybe…”

“What happened on Valentine’s Day…?”

It gets quiet. Emelia doesn’t ask the question again, knowing Hannah heard her and knowing that Hannah is thinking of it because her eyes suddenly changed. Hannah doesn’t know what to answer; she herself has so many questions about that day – about the hotel. She hasn’t had anyone to ask about that, she hasn’t told anyone about it either. With a wrinkled forehead, Hannah turns to look at Emelia, both of them looking confused at each other.

“He took me to a five-star hotel,” Hannah says in a low voice, not even remembering Emelia’s question by now, just wanting to tell someone of that big event that should have been so romantic and touching if Hannah wasn’t the way she is. She didn’t like that she didn’t know about it; she don’t like surprises. She freaked out because of the hotel, the food, the romantic gesture, the marriage talk, the look on Jonghyun’s face, his lips against hers…

“Okay…”

“He rented a whole suite, he had prepared a long table filled with delicious food… it was planned and everything, it was … really nice. It was perfect. He was perfect, everything was perfect,” Hannah whispers, frowning out in the air when remembering it. Emelia waits in silence, thinking that is something Maria would do while Hannah is actually glad Emelia is quiet because she knows Maria would ask question of what was wrong with that picture that Hannah creates. “I was wrong.”

“What?” Emelia can’t help but to ask that, too confused to suddenly hear those three words.

“I didn’t fit in the picture,” Hannah whispers and looks down, her eyes suddenly tearing up. Emelia can see so clearly how her eyes tears up and how she pouts her lips in a try to hold it in. “I don’t fit with perfection…”

“Bull,” Emelia says. She doesn’t say much. Emelia rolls her eyes when Hannah looks up at her, a little upset at the chosen word and a little surprised to hear it. “You fight a lot, you make up a lot, you both try to surprise each other on different levels but when he rents a suite it is suddenly too perfect for you? Why? Because he spends money on you?”

“Because I don’t deserve it,” Hannah answers, looking away from Emelia. “He should do that to the person he wants to spend his life with, not me.”

“So … you think Jonghyun wants to marry you for a few days and then move on, or what? I thought he was pretty confident you would spend your lives together…”

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

Hannah looks down at her hands at the question, sighing. Her nails are ruined after this flight. “I’m not Korean,” she mutters.

“What?” Emelia leans closer; it takes a few seconds before she hears what it was Hannah said. She is just about to start scold Hannah for those words when Hannah adds that Jonghyun’s family would never allow it. “Ah… mama’s boy…”

She got it. Hannah looks up in shock. Emelia just drifts away after those words, not saying anything. Everyone knows Jonghyun is a mama boy, his mother means everything to him, and if she doesn’t approve of his girlfriend, he will eventually do as his mother wants. Hannah knows that, Emelia knows that.

“That’s why I can’t be with him,” Hannah whispers to the air, staring out the window again.
