Chapter 21 - Bad

Youngest of Pieces: Five Years in History (9)

Hannah is sitting in her little red dress, legs crossed with her feet bare other than the tights she wears. She is staring out the window with her arms crossed over her chest too, showing how upset she is. Jonghyun is driving, letting the music on the radio interrupt their angry silence towards one another. She never asked where he is taking her, she didn’t response when she left the party and he kept telling her to put her shoes back on, she hasn’t said a thing to him since they left.

Just because they are in a relationship doesn’t mean he controls her. She can wear whatever she wants, she can drink if she wants, she can dance and have fun if she wants – why does he get upset over that?

There are no questions being asked when Jonghyun parks the car near 5 Pieces’ apartment. He doesn’t tell her to put on her shoes when she gets out of the car, and she doesn’t ask him if he is coming inside. In her head she asks the questions over and over again, but because she is angry at him she doesn’t actually let the questions reach . She wasn’t sure if he would go with her inside, but when she has closed the door after her she glances at him to see he is coming along, and he goes with her inside the apartment building, stands in the elevator with her, and goes with her to the door leading inside the apartment. She won’t ask him any questions about that; no question if he is staying the night.

Hannah puts her shoes on the side when they get inside the hall, both puppies comes rushing to them in excitement. Hannah greets them both before she hangs up her jacket, takes her cell phone and walks inside the apartment. Jonghyun takes off his shoes and jacket too, slowly walking after her.

“I don’t get it why you got upset,” Hannah mutters when she walks up the stairs.

“You don’t get it?” Jonghyun scoffs, just reaching the stairs. “You seriously don’t get it?” He hurries up after her – none of the puppies follows. “My girlfriend rather parties than hangs out with me – you rather hang out with Honggi than goes on parties. And you don’t know why I get upset?”

Hannah turns around in the middle of the corridor upstairs, gaping at him, “How can this be about Honggi?!”

“Isn’t it always?” Jonghyun growls as he comes closer.

“No! You bring him up all the time; this is about you getting angry because of my clothes,” Hannah answers, pointing him at the chest when he gets close enough. She turns around to get inside her bedroom.

“Because that dress doesn’t cover anything!” Jonghyun answers loudly with his eyes on her legs, throwing a hand up in the air before he follows her. “You don’t even like wearing short dresses!”

“That doesn’t mean you need to get upset when I do wear it,” Hannah responses as she throws the trident on her bookshelf, not remembering that she is still wearing the devil horns. She walks over to her wardrobe to take off the tights, not caring at all that Jonghyun is there because he has seen her undress before. “And no, I do not want to party or be with Honggi more than I want to be with you; he was just available the day I had to get away from it. And you for some reason did not like to be at the party. What’s wrong with that? I thought you liked the ladies.”

“I’m just tired,” Jonghyun answers, standing next to her bed and looking at her legs. Hannah throws the tights aside, putting a hand on her hip to look back at him from across the room.

“Not too tired to fight, apparently,” she tells him. “And you complain at this dress, while you were drooling when I wore the white dress for our anniversary.”

“That was completely different.”

“It’s still my body. Which means I decide what I wear, not you. No matter how much I love you; I decide.” She keeps looking serious when he smiles at her words. “And don’t bring up Honggi when you get upset because he has nothing to do with this.”

“I told you he has something to do with this,” Jonghyun tells her, repeating what he said before but his voice gets lower as Hannah approaches him. “You still left with him that night.”

“How many times are we going to have this conversation?” Hannah asks in a soft voice, stopping right in front of him with both hands on her hips, and Jonghyun can’t stop smiling now. In one way or another, he can’t be mad at her for long.

“If you say you love me, I’ll forgive you,” he challenges her playfully.

Hannah grimaces, and the next second he is pushed down on her bed. Jonghyun leans up on his arms, wetting his lips with his tongue when Hannah sits astride him, and Hannah leans forward to rests her hands on each side of his body to get as close to his face as possible with her face-expression staying serious. “I have nothing to be forgiven for,” she tells him calmly, putting one hand on his chest, “And your jealousy over Honggi isn’t going anywhere, so next time you try to put the blame on him, I won’t listen, understood?”

She claps him on the chest when getting back up on her feet, going to get a glass of water. She has just turned around when Jonghyun realises she is leaving the room, and he is fast to grab her hand to pull her back. Hannah bursts out laughing when he pulls her back to him, falling on the bed. She grabs a pillow to hit him, his grip of her hand loosens and Hannah gets up on her knees, hurrying over to the wall when Jonghyun tries to grab on to her again. He laughs as she hits the bed with the pillow, missing him completely. Hannah holds on to the pillow against her chest with both hands when Jonghyun gets out of bed, their eyes smiling at each other and Hannah starts laughing when he dramatically pulls the t-shirt over his head, throwing it aside. She hides her laugh behind the pillow, but she keeps looking at him to make sure he doesn’t try anything. Slowly, Jonghyun gets up on the bed, on his feet, and to see him rise above her makes Hannah laugh while Jonghyun playfully lifts his hands up to walk like a dinosaur, and when she is laughing with no stop he sits down right in front of her, her knees between his and he holds on to her wrists so she can’t try hit him with the pillow.

“Aaah!” Hannah laughs, trying to lean away along the wall when he leans forward with his mouth wide open as if he is either going to bite her or eat her (what’s the difference?) and Jonghyun can’t help but to laugh too, holding on to her wrists so she can’t lean away. He lets go of one wrist to quickly hold on to her chin, Hannah busy laughing that when his teeth nibbles on her neck she gives out a loud scream mixed with laughter. He laughs a little against her skin, kissing her on the neck.

“Say it,” he whispers below her ear, smiling because Hannah is just getting further and further down, laughing so much while falling on the side. He laughs when he leans back a little to see her face; she is almost lying down on the side between him and the wall, her knees between his legs. “Say it, Hannah,” he tells her, his eyes takes a swift look up and down her body before he spank her once on her , Hannah just laughing even more. He can’t stop smiling either; the dress doesn’t hide her curves a single bit when she is lying down, it is more that she gets an bigger s-line than earlier the way she is lying. Jonghyun puts one hand on her hip, the other on the bed so he can lean forward to where she is lying. “Say it.”

“Say what?” Hannah giggles behind her hand.

Jonghyun his lips when he leans closer to her, smiling as she starts laughing again. Whether it’s the alcohol or not, he doesn’t really care; she might look y and like a devil in her outfit, but she is still pure to him. “Say that you love me,” he reminds her, his hand goes down the back of her leg so he can take a hold of it, part her legs for him to fit his in between, so he can almost lie over her, leaning on his arm.

He starts kissing her neck, her arm and cheek, waiting for her to say it, kissing her softly and nibbling her lightly in between the kisses that only make her giggle more. He moves to lie higher up, to reach her ear, tickling her when he breathes.

“I love it when you wear these kind of dresses around me; I don’t like it when you wear it for others to see,” he whispers so softly that it tickles in her ear, “It’s for me to see.”

Hannah holds up her head along the bed by his words, her hand stuck between them glides up to his neck and he lets her roll them over so she leans half her body over his, her leg now between his. She isn’t sure if she should smile or not when looking at him, dragging her hand down his stomach, taking a hold of his hand to bring it to her face, letting him hold on to her head. “A singer isn’t just about the voice,” she tells him, “with our work, people look at us every day. It’s for everyone to see.” Jonghyun’s face that had seemed to like where this was going, gets gloomy at her words. She tilts her head towards his hand, leaning forward to kiss him on the chest before she moves higher up so her lips almost touches his, their eyes focused on each other’s.

“It’s for you to touch,” she corrects him.

His smile is blinding when they kiss, and Hannah giggles when he wraps his body around her as if he won’t let her go. After a short make-out session, he whispers in her ear; “You still haven’t said it.”

She laughs again at him, biting his lip the way he had bitten her on the neck. “I love you, Jonghyun,” she giggles at him.

He laughs, sounding so happy. “I love you, Hannah,” he responses, kissing her again.

It’s four in the morning when Hannah wakes up, dry, her head lightly pumping and she grimaces when she turns around on her back, holding a hand to her head. Jonghyun is lying next to her. Hannah keeps grimacing when slowly sitting up, carefully gliding down to try get out of bed without waking him up. She is wearing a big t-shirt (her own) that she tries to pull down when she gets on her knees to get over the quilt.

“Where you going…?” a mumbling comes from behind her and the other half of the bed moves when Jonghyun stretches out his body.

Hannah turns around, looking like she just got caught. “Go back to sleep,” she whispers, getting one leg over the quilt.

“What about you?” Jonghyun mumbles, rubbing his eye with one hand and the other hand falls out on the empty spot next to him.

“I’m just getting something to drink,” Hannah whispers, hurrying out of bed so he won’t tell her to lie down again. “I’ll be back in two minutes.”

Jonghyun groans and rolls tiredly over to her side of the bed, looking like he is not going anywhere and Hannah can sneak downstairs to the kitchen.

The first thing she does is to look in the hall; the other members are there, and she can see stylist Yong Hyun’s shoes there too (she hope she sees wrong; she has a faint memory of him going home to his boyfriend after the party). Knowing her members are back, Hannah gets inside the kitchen to get something to drink. While drinking water she looks through the fridge, her body suddenly getting cold so she looks through the kitchen cabinets instead. She find an open bag of chips, and sneakily takes it down to the worktop, looking through if she can find something else to eat while chewing on the tasty chips.

It is a super great thing she ate yesterday before drinking; otherwise she would have gotten a horrible hangover. Now she is just a little hungry, thirsty and had head is a little, little aching. Other than the chips she doesn’t find anything she thinks she wants to eat, so she takes another chips in her hand, turns around with it going to when spotting Jonghyun tiredly walk up to her.

She can’t help but to giggle when seeing him come up to her, shirtless with his jeans not even buttoned.

“Your side of the bed got cold,” Jonghyun mumbles tiredly when putting his arms around her for a hug. He seems like a zombie, groaning when he has put his arms around her. “What are you eating?”

“Chips – I think its Emelia’s,” Hannah answers in a low voice, trying to swallow what she has in . “It’s yummy.”

His body chuckles against her at her comment that it is yummy, and she looks innocently up at him when he leans back, his arms around her neck while he looks at her. He had picked up chips from the bag when he hugged her, so now he just puts the chips between his lips, biting on to it lightly and with half-asleep eyes he leans forward, hugging her neck so Hannah can’t lean away when she laughs at him. She keeps giggling when she bites the other end of the chips, looking at him when he chews on his end. He looks adorably y, tiredly standing in front of her with his eyes barely open and bare chest.

Jonghyun puts another between his lips, mumbling something unknown when Hannah starts laughing again at him, and Jonghyun just leans forward again so Hannah bites on to the other end. But this time he doesn’t lean away, and Hannah almost chokes on her laughter when he kisses her with the chips in their mouths, her hands held up right below their faces, not touching but not really sure what to do either. He deepens the kiss, his tongue explores and Hannah can’t help but to groan, her giggling suddenly stopping as he keeps kissing her. His arms go down between them, leaving her neck to glide around her waist instead, pulling her closer so his hands hold on to her back tightly and Hannah puts her own arms around his neck but within seconds his hands moves further down her hip, down her thighs to suddenly wrap her bare legs around him, her put on the kitchen worktop as their bodies gets warmer from the make out session.

He grasps on to the kitchen worktop when her fingers goes through his hair and all of a sudden something falls behind her and they both jumps away from the worktop. Out of breath from kissing, they realise he had hit the glass of water she had prepared, and the glass fell down in the sink (without breaking, lucky) and they both laughs in relief when seeing it.

Hannah smiles as she turns back to him, one arm around his and the other by his neck, happy when he puts his arms around her and kisses her again.

“Oh y”

Hannah pushes Jonghyun away in panic by the voice, covering as if she was caught doing something bad, blushing when seeing stylist Yong Hyun stand by the entrance to the kitchen, smirking at them.

“Please, continue; don’t let me interrupt,” Yong Hyun waves a hand at them, walking right by them to the fridge. “I just came to get some water.”

“Oppa, why are you sleeping here?” Hannah is fast to ask the question she had asked herself earlier.

“The gay couple had a fight,” Yong Hyun explains in a simple tone, “So I told him to call me when stops being so sensitive, and I got to sleep in Julia’s room.” He turns around with a bottle of water, standing with the fridge-door open. “I see you two are done fighting?”

“Who said we are fighting?” Hannah mumbles, glancing at Jonghyun who really isn’t shy about his body at all, then she walks over to the fridge to close the door.

Yong Hyun raises his eyebrows at her. “Everyone saw you last night, Blondie. Well, those that didn’t see it got to hear it anyway,” he tells her. Hannah steps over to his other side, her head kept low when she picks up the glass from the sink and starts taking away the chips. “Let me guess… This was either about … Hannah drinking or … about Honggi?”

Hannah glances over her shoulder at Jonghyun to see his expression, and then glances at her stylist who looks proud over their reactions.

“You talk about me often?” Jonghyun wonders, grimacing a bit as he remembers most of their fights have been about those two things.

Yong Hyun smiles widely. “The youngest of Pieces need some good guiding, don’t you think?” he jokes with Jonghyun, raising his bottle to show he is done as he walks across the room, stopping next to Jonghyun with a smirk. “Hannah tells me everything.”

“Oppa!” Hannah whines.

Her stylist leaves with satisfaction, while Hannah looks worried at her boyfriend. Jonghyun listens to when Yong Hyun goes up the stairs to make sure they are alone, by then he looks at Hannah with his own eyebrows raised, slowly walking up to her. “Really now…” he breathes, wiping his lower lip with his thumb. “You … tell him everything?”

Hannah bites on to her lip to stay quiet, trying to come up with something to say but she doesn’t want to say something the wrong way. She breathes in deeper when he stops in front of her, so close that their bodies almost touches and she has to lift her head up high to look at him. She holds on to that breath when he takes his hand through her hair.

“You tell your gay stylist, exactly everything about us two? Like…” Jonghyun speaks softly, teasing it feels like, and Hannah bites her lip harder when he moves his face next to her, whispering in her ear ily; “how frustrated we got in the elevator?”

She really bites her lip, closing her eyes when he looks down, a finger traces up under her t-shirt, touching her skin lightly. She swallows nervously when he is breathing in her ear again.

“You tell him how much I adore your body? Every – inch – of – your – body,” he breathes in her ear while his finger traces her skin. Jonghyun smiles over how tense she is. “Why aren’t you answering?”

“I don’t tell him that,” Hannah answers in one breath. Jonghyun kisses her on the lips, enjoying how tense she got when the stylist revealed this; was she worried he would get angry? He moves his face to the other side of hers, teasing anew in her other ear, distracting with his other hand going up her hip under the t-shirt too.

“You … tell him how annoying I can be?”

“Yes,” Hannah answers this time without hesitation, just to gasp in surprise when he grasps on to her skin with his hand.

“And you tell him … how much you like it when I touch you…?”

“Mhm…”

“What was that?” Jonghyun whispers, not knowing if she says ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on that one, and he sees how she smiles. He knows she is holding in her stomach. “Do you tell him what goes on in your bedroom when I’m visiting?”

Her smile widens and he is pretty sure that means ‘yes’ because she will not give out a sound to answer. He kisses her on the cheek, softly dragging his lips to , breathing slowly while looking at her.

“You tell him what a great kisser I am?” he whispers, his lips brushes against hers before he smirks at her cheeks changing colours. Her face tells him everything.

Four hours later, Hannah is sitting on the floor in the practice-room, trying to hold in her laughter at Maria’s face-expression when Janetta Huddleston is showing the choreography for [Girls Power]. All the dancers are there today too, learning the choreography and well aware of that this is definitely nothing 5 Pieces have ever tried on before. Most of them have a hangover, which is probably why Hannah laughs; Maria looks completely lost, gaping at the choreography.

“That’s y…” Maria swallows once Janetta is done showing. “Especially that … with the chair, you know…”

Maria looks helplessly at the ladies. Sure they had told her a lot of things about the choreography, but she didn’t really expect this – she thought they were exaggerating way too much like usual. She looks at the team of American choreographers.

“You expect us to do that?” Maria eventually asks them.

“The other members did pretty well the other day,” Janetta answers with a smile. “Come on, let’s do it together.”

For the dancers and Maria they learn it quickly from the beginning again, going through the movements that the ladies had some trouble with the other day. Hannah can’t believe how 5 Pieces so much at this kind of dance; y is definitely not their style. And then she has thought the girls are doing super awesome in [Daze], but then again they aren’t told to be y for that song either. Hannah keeps following the directions for the choreography, feeling more focused on how everyone else is doing.

“How come Hannah’s only problem is that she can’t snap her fingers, while the rest of us can’t get the choreography?” Julia complains after practicing for a few hours.

The beginning of the song has this y snap your fingers sound, which they have added to the choreography, but Hannah, has never been able to snap her fingers. It’s the same thing that some people can’t whistle. Hannah doesn’t comment on it, not liking how they keep saying she for once doesn’t have a problem with the choreography though Hannah has so many troubles with it: her members mean that she has an hourglass body-type. Hannah wants to agree with the choreographers; your body-type doesn’t say how well you can dance a certain dance.

No lady seems to be positive about the choreography at all, but they don’t stop practicing. Surely it is those moments during the day when the ladies step to the side, saying this is impossible, but for some reason, they get back on the floor because of the foreign teachers. These three American choreographers have crossed the globe to work with them; Hannah thinks that is what makes the girls keep going, knowing that they once did the same when going from Sweden to Korea. And they translate for the dancers who don’t speak English, that’s probably the only thing that makes the girls laugh during the whole day.

It’s tiring as they repeat the song, and Carolina gets annoyed. She is good with the cute songs, with these typical Korean girl-group songs (she was the happiest of them when they prepared their second album with the cute concept for [I Love You]) that 5 Pieces rarely do because of their image and the fact that no other member is good at it. Repeating and repeating the choreography, being corrected for everything.

“Where did Carolina go?” Hannah asks in a low voice, noticing that one of the ladies is not in the room.

“I think she went to the bathroom,” Emelia answers, sitting on the chair and looking at her mirror-reflection, practicing one of the dance-movements slowly.

“I’ll go check on her,” Julia mutters, heading out the room. Hannah pouts after her; Julia looked like she wanted to run away, taking the first chance she got. She looks back at the others in the room who are going through the choreography together. Hannah takes the chair next to Emelia’s to join them, still glancing at the door a little now and then.

Hannah and Emelia goes through the chair part with Katharine, slowly one move after the other, that if they had done it fast it would look like the real dance. It seems like half the song will be used with the chairs and that is the difficult part in the choreography too.

When they are going to start go through the song from beginning to end and learn individual parts to make it fit the song, Julia and Carolina haven’t come back. Maria asks Hannah if she can go get them.

“Why me?” Hannah grimaces.

“Because I ask you to,” Maria glares at her, waving a hand for Hannah to leave. Hannah pouts when going to the door, stepping outside the room and muttering when heading towards the toilets.

Hannah yawns and waves her arms to keep her body moving, hurrying to the toilets to get back as soon as possible. They still have to go to the recording studio later to record some song Carolina has been working on. She finds her two friends standing outside the toilets, and Hannah simply asks why they aren’t coming back even if she notices something is wrong.

Carolina looks the other way, looking like she is trying to not show that she is upset over something.

“The happy pill isn’t happy,” Julia answers with a sigh, calling Carolina for “happy pill”.

“What’s wrong then?” Hannah quietly asks the group’s mascot, stepping up in front of Carolina.

“It’s not our style,” Carolina whines. She has been crying, Hannah realises, but she doesn’t comment on the raspy voice of her friend. “I mean… We aren’t like that. We don’t … do those things that ... they do. We don’t dance like that. 5 Pieces isn’t about bodies or , that’s the opposite.

“She’s upset at our new concept,” Julia tells Hannah with a comforting hand on Carolina’s shoulder.

Carolina keeps looking away, being upset quietly. Hannah bites her lip, wondering what to say to get her in a better mood. “Can’t we give it a try?” Hannah tries, leaning a little on the side to look at Carolina. “All of us have the same thoughts about the song, Carolina, it’s not just you. But we should at least learn it and see how the result ends up like, right?”

“No…” Carolina whines, putting her hands up to her face when she is about to start crying again. “I can’t dance like that. It’s humiliating.”

“It’s not humiliating,” Julia tries to lift her mood up too. “See it as something fun we do with our friends.”

Hannah knows those words won’t work; Carolina doesn’t even dance on the dance-floor unless it is some typical K-Pop song. “Carolina, what’s your plan then? Are you going to let four ladies make fools of themselves while you sit and pout on the side? You think Captain will allow that?”

“Exactly,” Julia nods in agreement. “And you’re not the only one who can’t get the moves correctly. Have you seen how stiff the rest of us are?”

“Come on,” Hannah reaches out her hand friendly, “You know what we usually say at these kinds of moments?”

Carolina shakes her head, pretending she doesn’t see Hannah’s hand.

“We can’t finish the puzzle without one piece,” Hannah tells her, grabbing her arm but doesn’t force her to leave her place. “Let’s do our best to help each other, okay?”

Without a word, Carolina starts walking back with them, her hand cold and sweaty in Hannah’s warm hand. Carolina doesn’t look happy though, so when they return to the others to begin the dance practice again, Hannah gives Carolina a quick hug, telling her that they do it together. It doesn’t seem to matter that Carolina doesn’t like the choreography or style at all; they still do it, and whenever Hannah sees Carolina’s face she can see that her friend is not entertained, amused or liking this a single bit at all.

Still, tomorrow they will all spend the day in the practice-room too, to do the third basic choreography practice.

“You are a very variable artist; you go from acting to singing to writing your own books. Is there anything behind the reason why you try all these different lines in work?” Hannah is asked during an interview in Singapore, the woman using English to talk to her.

Hannah has spent the day doing interviews and book signings in Singapore. Last night when she arrived she went straight to sleep, woke up three hours later to get ready to begin her schedule with tons of interviews in the morning. Yesterday’s dance practice was painful. 5 Pieces had complained deep from their bones when they arrived at the dance-practice to be given a pair of high heel boots (10cm heels) to learn to do the choreography in high heels; and it took two hours until the girls were sitting on the floor, bandaging their feet from blisters and Hannah today can still feel her feet every second during her interviews.

To answer the question, Hannah brings the microphone to her lips, saying; “I don’t think so… I have just gotten the opportunity to try it out and because I have interest in both acting and writing, I took it.”

“Is there anything else you would like to try too?”

“Actually, at the moment I am very satisfied with what I am doing. I have my dream job already,” Hannah nods with a smile.

“So you are living your dream, that’s good,” the woman laughs and Hannah smiles widely, agreeing to it. “But you have tried different kind of things so far, is there one of them you prefer over the other and why?”

“I always say I prefer to work with 5 Pieces, because that’s kind of the ground and beginning for me, but I think … what I really enjoy doing is to meet fans, which I am able to do even if I release a book because of the promotions, so… yeah, I can’t really choose. I have been asked what I would do if I didn’t work with music, and I say I would write books, probably, but then I would still do music on the side.”

“You are originally from Sweden, but you are currently living in Korea, and you travel a lot. How do you stay connected with friends while being away?”

“Um…” Hannah automatically says when thinking and she laughs when the woman chuckles at the answer. “I usually travel with my friends?” Hannah laughs at her response, the staff laughing too as she means 5 Pieces is her friends. “Well, I don’t really stay in touch with a lot of friends that I had back in Sweden…”

“What about your friends in Korea?” the woman suggests.

“We chat online,” Hannah simply answers, “It’s very simple that way.”

“Is there a person you miss the most when you travels like this? Going to Singapore like this, who do you miss the most?”

“Our pets,” Hannah honestly answers with a big smile. “I always miss them because they are so warm and cute. Anyone with a pet understands the feeling.”

“You got your cat from fans right?” the interviewer remembers and Hannah laughs at it.

“Yes. On our third year anniversary, our fans got this adorable kitten for us named Ace. And last year, we got two puppies too.”

“All pets are from your fans?”

“Oh no,” Hannah shakes her head, and then tries to remember last year. “I came home one day – to 5 Pieces’ apartment in Korea – and there were two puppies running around, having everyone’s attention. We actually went against our manager by getting puppies because we work all the time and wouldn’t have time to care for them; but so far it has gone well.”

“A lot of your fans are probably wondering if you are planning a solo comeback soon, with several of the other members releasing their own albums this year, you have been very quiet on the music-front solo. Are there any plans?”

“I don’t have any plans now,” Hannah answers, “I have just finished shooting a drama in Korea and I would want to put my focus back on 5 Pieces again.”

The interviewer looks at her staff and Hannah blinks a few times when hearing there is only one question left and the interviewer asks Hannah about coming to Singapore and her experience there.

“I have been here a few times before… Last year I came here a few times for concerts and this December we are bringing 5 Pieces’ BLACK & WHITE tour to Singapore as well, and when we have come here before we have really enjoyed it. The people are really amazing, I think that is what I have had the best experience of and if you ask my members they would probably say the food – Singapore food is really delicious.”

“Hannah, thank you so much for giving us some of your time,” the woman ends politely and Hannah smiles kindly at her.

“Thank you for having me,” she politely responses and gets up on her feet when the woman stands up and they shake hand and take a picture before Hannah thanks everyone for their work while she has to go prepare for the next interview.

Manager Lee smiles and gives the thumbs up when Hannah comes inside another room at the luxury hotel; the room has been prepared for Hannah to relax in between the interviews. She has nine interviews at this hotel before she will go back to Korea; eight of them are now done and she has one final interview left. Hannah takes a bottle of Coca-Cola she had been given earlier and she walks over to the window to look outside.

“There weren’t many questions about the book,” Hannah comments about the interview she just did. “Oppa… I think it’s even more people out there now.”

Between the interviews, Hannah has spotted a crowd outside the hotel. Some fans had followed her here after her last book signing, and then the crowd has just been growing out there. Manager Lee asks about the interview though she keeps looking out the window; he can’t speak English so he doesn’t know what they have been talking about. Hannah talks to him while quietly asking if she can open the window, trying to find out how to open it too. A woman working at the hotel (and who sticks in the background like a servant) comes forward to help her when Hannah asks in English if she is allowed to open it

“What are you planning?” Manager Lee asks at that moment.

“I’m just wondering if they will see me,” Hannah answers. “Which floor are we on?” She smiles at the woman, thanking her for opening the window for her and Hannah stays away from it for now.

“The second floor,” her manager sighs, coming up to her as if he worries she will fall out.

Hannah smiles at her manager and then looks out the window, leaning out to see below the window, starting to laugh when the crowd people starts screaming – if some of them starts screaming, looking up, the rest follows. Hannah waves with her whole hand and arm down to them, looking back inside when Manager Lee takes the Coca-Cola bottle from her. Hannah starts waving with both hands instead, doing a heart with her hands too.

After some fan-service, Hannah gets back out where she will begin the last interview, smiling and in control of her body from top to toe. This time it is a man who will interview her.

“5 Pieces in the music and entertainment industry has become world-wide stars this year with the song [Daze], but as an author, Hannah has become an icon of her own with Asia’s most inspiring fantasy novel of this decade. Two weeks ago you became the author of the most inspiring fantasy novel. What was your reaction when you were told that?”

“I had definitely not expected it. It was … a huge surprise. I don’t think I even wanted it to be real because it felt too distant to be,” Hannah answers, liking how he moves his hands when talking.

“Last year the first book was published. Before that, did you have any thoughts that this story would come this far, to be this popular?”

“Um… I didn’t think it would be big at all. I had hoped my fans would like it and I kind of dreamed that some boy or girl would look around on the bookshelves and give a try to read the book without knowing anything about me, and then get stuck with the story. I have always loved to write and to share my own imagination with others have been … something I feared before, but I am actually impressed with the response.”

“You feared to share your story before?”

“Oh yes. I have been writing since I was a little kid but I never let anyone read anything. I remember in 6th grade or somewhere there, I spent the whole summer with a friend – Emelia, who also is in 5 Pieces – and we would sit in the sun, write our own thing and then change paper to read and give feedback to each other… And I have always trusted my members and their opinions, so … not until they kept telling me to try get the story published, I gave it a try.”

“How was the reaction after the first book? Did you feel positivity from the readers or was it a lot of people questioning you going from a pop idol to a publishing author?”

“I guess everyone questioned it. They maybe still are. But the reaction, for me personally, was very positive. I got so many comments from readers and fans, who have ... wanted to know more, or given me such feedback that I think they should be the ones writing instead of me, but they have such … an intense passion for a book, which I thought was impossible because I was the one writing it, but definitely… yeah, the reaction was good.”

“The second book, ‘Joe – Déjà Vu’, has been getting a lot off attention. You are currently the number one best selling author in Singapore – congratulations – and you are the youngest, top seller in most parts of Asia as well, and as well the most wanted celebrity in several countries, because of all your activities. I need to tell this too, that there is a big crowd of fans outside this building; they shouted when you looked out the window! How does that feel? Are you used to the attention?”

Hannah can’t stop smiling at this question. She just gets these images in her head of fans cheering her on at the book signings; wherever she has gone for the promotions, but she don’t think she is used to it. “I would say my safety zone is within 5 Pieces; wherever I go with my members, I keep thinking ‘this is normal’, but when I went to Beijing last time for, um, a signing, fans actually fainted! I got such a shock by that.”

“So you are not used to the attention you have gotten here in Singapore?”

“No,” she shakes her head, “but I love the attention my book is getting. During the signings, I get to meet a lot of fans who just want to shake my hand and say they like my book and that makes me really happy.”

“There are a lot of interesting characters in the book. We meet a lot of new interesting characters in the second book too, and I would want to ask … do you have a favourite character?”

“No…”

“Not even when writing them?”

“When I write them, I have my favourites. Whenever I write about a new character, that character becomes the main point in that scene. But when I’m not writing, I just like them all.”

“You have said in other interviews that your mother was very supportive when you started to write. Did she support you to become a publishing author too?”

“Uh…” Hannah hesitates, knowing where this goes but she stays naïve when answering; “My mother was very supportive when I told her that I keep writing, because she wrote a lot when she was in her early teens too, but she kept saying that you can’t live on that as a job, you know. Her suggestion was to wait until I grew old, which made me upset because at that time, writing was the only thing I had real passion for. But I agree with her still; I have only been lucky with this book because of 5 Pieces and my agency helped me a lot to be able to be published…”

“If you were in Sweden, if you never had been part of 5 Pieces, would you have become an author still?”

“Not at this age, no,” Hannah shakes her head slowly, “In Sweden, I would have tried to get some kind of work and I would be a nerd who writes and listens to K-Pop on the side. So I am very blessed with my life today.”

“Have your mother read your books?” he asks, and that is a question that makes Hannah quiet for a few seconds.

“She … hasn’t told me anything in person, but my sister said she read the first one that I had sent home for her.”

“You sent the first book to your family?”

“Yes. I sent the first book to my mother as a proof that I have actually been published… It’s not her genre to read, she is more into crime, but I wanted to show it for her.”

“Have you spoken to your mother recently? We know you have had your differences,” he says, mentioning what was aired on 5 Pieces’ reality show (that showed in Singapore too), “Have you cleared things up?”

“I haven’t spoken to my family,” Hannah admits, her face-expression stiff now, “I- We have had our differences for a long time and I think it will need an effort from both sides if we want to fix anything.”

“About your family… Do you know why your sister said what she said?”

“I don’t know.” Hannah glances at Manager Lee, who is waiting for her to give a signal if it gets too much, but he notices she is very uncomfortable and he is ready to jump in if needed.

“Did you fight at that time?”

Hannah on her lip when taking the time to answer. “The thing is,” she starts saying, “She called me after three years and bluntly asked for money”

“Why didn’t you give her money?”

“I’m…” Hannah shrugs her shoulders. “I don’t want to be part of that.”

“A lot of people connect your real life to the story in ‘Joe’. There are a lot of deep and emotional moments; while there are some funny and happy parts too that makes you cry of happiness for the characters. I have two sentences, with one used in the first book and one from the second book that I can’t get out of my head. Can I read them for you?” he asks Hannah, who at first when he started to talk took a deep breath as she realised the subject changes, and she nods while slowly breathing out, remembering that she can’t sigh all too clearly in front of the cameras even if she was relieved the talk about her family passed by.

She listens when he looks down at a note to read the two sentences from the book. ‘I’m living in a nightmare and no one wants to help me get out of it’ and ‘It feels like I’m being ripped apart from the inside’. She nods when he is done reading them, looking at him when he looks up at Hannah, and she smiles when he just breathes out.

“Where do you get it all from? What’s the inspiration from these two sentences? They are really deep…”

His one question becomes more and his sincere curiosity makes her keep smiling. “I tend to write according to my mood, but I tend to write more when I am in a bad mood. That’s where it comes from,” Hannah simply answers, knowing he won’t get satisfied with that. “I actually wrote … um… the first sentence you said from the first book, late in the evening or something and I was really in a bad mood and … I just wrote those words down, and then I found a good spot for it when I was writing.”

“When was this?”

“Wow…” Hannah leans back, giggling when thinking of what year it is. “This was in … it was about 7-8 years ago.”

“You have been writing ‘Joe’ for that long?!” he almost bursts out in shock and Hannah laughs.

“No, oh no, I haven’t… I started to write ‘Joe’ about a year before I went to Korea the first time – which is six years ago.”

“You are just in your early twenties now; how was it for a young girl to write something like that? These sentences are very deep and depressing, are they not? Even in the book they are,” the man says with his forehead frowning, looking troubled when counting down what age she was in. “You were just about …”

“About 12-13 years old,” Hannah finishes his comment with a nod. “But you know, I was … In that age you go through a lot, I think, and I was just normal at that time. Well, not really normal, but who knows about that. I had a deep … need, to find something. I went from wearing a lot of eyeliner to no eyeliner, I would braid my hair – you know, I was just trying to find myself. And wherever I looked, it was people around me with such confidence in themselves and I was growing, not knowing anything… so yeah. This is becoming such a childish interview, I’m really sorry, but that’s how it was at that time.”

“No, no, don’t apologize, any answer of yours is a worthy answer,” he laughs at her, moving his hand for her to continue. “‘It feels like I’m being ripped apart from the inside’; this quote is one of my favourites, because I have read that this is actually how idols feel like. There are a lot of rumours spreading about your books, about quotes your characters say and things that are written in the books that makes you just ask yourself ‘is this Hannah’s reality?’ and I want to ask you; is this sentence taken from your own reality?”

“Um, yes and no,” Hannah slowly answers. This is interesting; he asks questions others don’t dare to ask, he is on the verge of the hill in many subjects but he is careful to not step over it. “Those words are said in the second book when Joe is struggling with her past, trying to not admit she has fallen in love…”

“Have you ever felt in your life that you could have described with the same words?” he asks her quickly, noticing how she tries to avoid it.

“Yes.”

“When?”

Hannah releases a sigh when thinking of it. “I think… Many times, actually, I have thought of those words when I have been on the verge of going crazy. It has been for many reasons, both good and bad, when I just have felt it has been too much for me to handle.”

“Instead of asking for the reason, how do you handle such a feeling? In the book, what does Joe do?”

“Joe confronts it,” Hannah smiles as they focus on the book character, “She is that kind of character who knows everything, but when a sudden emotion wells up inside her she isn’t used to she in this book tries to confront it without telling anyone.”

“And what do you do, what do the author?”

“I…” Hannah breathes in, smiling when trying to remember the question. “I used to dance. I would go have some lonely time in the practice-room to sweat it all out, but these days I don’t have time for it so … What do I do?” She laughs, taking a lock of hair behind her ear. “It depends on the reason, I think. I usually write when I have a lot going on in my head, or I dance or go to the gym to sweat it out, or I try to just relax and calm down with our pets…”

“You write when you have too much going on?”

“Yes,” she smiles widely. “I am an addict. I can’t stop writing. I need to have a paper and pen with me everywhere, just in case I come up with a quote like the ones you just mentioned, or if I come up with an idea or something. I always need it.”
