Christina Perri: A Thousand Years

-----------------------------

On Saturday, Danji slept in. She woke up with a jolt when she realized her grandfather might be waiting for breakfast.

Danji quickly got up. Running her fingers through her bed hair, she walked towards the living room. It was empty.

“Grandpa?” Danji went into the kitchen. He was not there either, but there was a note attached to the fridge.

‘Going to the city to sell my crafts. Don’t scoff at me. Relax. Breathe. I’ll be fine. – Grandpa’.

Danji leaned against the counter with a sigh that was a mixture of relief and worry. *You should have told me sooner. I would have gone with you and helped.* She placed the note in the basket that was filled with her grandfather’s post-it notes.

Since she had to eat breakfast alone, she decided to eat something simple.

Danji opened the cupboard and found corn flakes. She took that out and searched for some milk. Danji realized the milk was soy and made a face. She hated soy milk. *Oh, well. I’ll have to make do with what I have.*

Danji sat on the tall stool and poured corn flakes into a bowl. She poured milk over her cereal and began to chew on it. The only sound she could hear was the sound of her own chewing.

Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.

Danji swallowed and looked around. *The house feels way too empty without grandpa. I hope he comes back soon and safe. It usually takes him an entire day and night at the city though.* Realizing she was alone for the entire day, she sighed. *Whatever. I’ll find something to occupy myself with.*

When done with breakfast, Danji washed the bowl and spoon and neatly placed them back in the proper places. She called Minyoung but realized it was before noon and hung up.

On weekends, Minyoung never woke up before lunch.

Danji cleaned the entire house. When she was done, it was past lunchtime. Danji called Minyoung in hopes that she would answer. However, her mother picked up and said that Minyoung had gone to help at her father’s sports shop and would not be back until later that afternoon. Danji politely thanked Mrs. Kim and hung out. She blew a raspberry and pouted.

*I guess I’ll have to spend the afternoon alone until Minyoung is back.* Danji looked out the window.

The weather was beautiful outside. There was not a hint of a cloud in the sky, and the sun was warm and radiating over the canopy. She tilted her head in thought. *I can sketch the scenery. I haven’t done that in a while.*

Danji walked to her room with purpose. She changed her clothes and packed her bag with everything she would need. Danji made sure to lock the door tightly before walking over to the bicycle and unlocking the chain. She perched on the seat and pedaled off.

The sun felt warm against her skin, and the birds flew around her as they sang sweetly. Danji looked upwards at the shining trees and smiled in happiness. She covered her eyes from the blinding sunray. *It was a good idea to come out. Everything is so beautiful here.*

Danji arrived at a spot in the woods that was just perfect for drawing. There was even a sparkling stream. The sound of trickling water added to the perfect mood of Mother Nature.

Danji spread out the picnic blanket and sat upon it. She rested her back against the trunk of a sturdy tree and took out her sketchbook and pencils. Danji closed on eye and held her pencil straight out in front of her.

“Hmmm…” Inspired, she began to draw.

Hours literally passed by, but to her, it only seemed like minutes. Danji was finally done with her drawing. It captured the beauty of nature perfectly. Satisfied, she leaned back and stretched her arms above her.

*What time is it? I’m so hungry.* Danji checked the time and blinked in surprise. It was already 3 p.m. *No wonder I’m hungry. Lunchtime has passed.*

Danji dug into her backpack and pulled out the apple she had packed. She bit into it and munched on the juicy fruit. Her lips curled upwards into a peaceful smile. *I should do this more often. It’s very relaxing.*

When Danji was done with the apple, she placed the apple core back into her bag. She walked her bicycle to the stony path and then got on. Danji began to go home.

On the way, she saw a few beautiful daisies. A butterfly kissed the center and flew past her. Danji hopped off and stooped down in front of the flowers. She picked one off and opened her sketchbook. Danji placed the flower on a blank page and closed the book to flatten the flower. Smiling at all the memories she had made today, she got back on her bicycle and headed home.

Danji had not realized but six eyes had been diligently watching her since the start of the day.

Luhan stepped out of his hiding spot and watched her pedal away. He had witnessed all that she had experienced. His heart squeezed at how angelic she had looked while sketching. It had taken every ounce of his patience to not pounce out from his hiding spot and demand her to officially become his mate.

All these feelings were so new to Luhan. He had never ever experienced such deep, complicated emotions before. *How had Kris dealt with them before?* Luhan wondered in marvel.

“Seriously, if you were searching for the perfect moment to get her, that was it.” Tao came out with a shake of his head.

*I know. But I believe that there is a time for everything.* Luhan thought.

“At this rate, you’re never going to- ACK!” Tao choked as Luhan gripped his throat.

“Help-me-“ Tao wheezed.

“Luhan. Let him go.” Kris ordered.

Luhan reluctantly released the troublemaker.

Kris gave Tao a stern look. “Seriously, why do you always stir trouble?” “I didn’t do anything!” He claimed, bewildered.

“Sure you didn’t.” Chen’s voic
