With nowhere to go, Danji’s only refuge was the wolves’ home.

The wolves stood up as soon as she entered. They were shocked to see her terrible condition. She looked like she had been in a war.

Her clothes were soiled, and her socks had become black. She wasn’t wearing any shoes, and her jacket was torn. There was a large cut over her eye, and a spot on the top of her head seemed to be swollen as well. Her hand was burned and bloodied, and she had scrapes all over her arms and legs. Her eyes were wide and glassy. She had her arms around her shaking body. She felt cold and hot all over.

The stench of smoke and fire filled the air.

“Mei-mei…” Tao whispered, heartbroken.

Lay looked down with a sad frown, and pity was written all over Xiumin’s face.

Kris had no idea how to comfort her, and Chen was dead silent.

Luhan put a gentle hand on his shoulder, “You can get cleaned up first.” He guided her to the bathroom and turned the light on. “You can wash. As for your clothes…” Luhan had no idea what to do.

“Here,” Kris suddenly appeared with a long sleeveless jersey top. “This…was Holly’s. I’m sure it’ll fit you though.”

Luhan stared at Kris in shock. He was willing to give his dead mate’s clothing to Danji?

Of course he would. He already treated her like a sister.

Luhan gratefully nodded. *Thank you, Kris.*

Kris nodded, squeezed his shoulder, and left.

Luhan placed the top on a dry part of the sink, “You can wear this. I’ll…be outside if you need anything.” He shut the door and left.

Instantly, Danji dropped onto the tile floor. Tears flooded her eyes. She had lost everything. She curled up into a ball and cried.

All the wolves could her disconsolate sobs.

Luhan closed his eyes in pain. She was heartbroken, and there was nothing he could do about it.

“Just leave me alone! What don’t you get about it?! Every time I see you, I’m reminded of my grandfather’s dead body!”

*I can’t do anything. If I do, I’ll only exacerbate the situation. I don’t want to hurt her anymore.*

“Luhan.” Someone gently called. He opened his eyes and looked back.

Lay approached him timidly, “Are you all right?”

“I don’t think that matters right now.” Luhan muttered.

Lay softened, “Of course it does.”

Luhan didn’t answer.

Lay glanced back towards the bathroom, “Don’t you think she needs you right now?”

Luhan closed his eyes, “No. If she sees me, she’ll just be reminded of the adverse circumstances she’s stuck in.”

“…It’s not your fault.” Lay quietly said.

Luhan laughed sarcastically, “I think it is.”

Lay shook his head, “No, really, it’s not-“

“IT IS, YIXING!” Luhan exploded in Chinese, “Everything she told me was right! If she hadn’t been destined to be my mate, none of this would have happened! No, if I hadn’t come to find her and stubbornly stayed until she accepted me, we would not be going through such an ordeal right now! She would be a perfectly normal girl living in a perfectly normal home with her perfectly loving grandfather! I just had to come and ruin everything! GOD DAMN IT!” He kicked a chair in the patio.

Fury running through his veins, Luhan changed into his wolf form and sprinted into the forest.

Lay lowered his head, “I still don’t think it’s your fault…”

After showering and wearing Holly’s old clothing, Danji stepped out of the bathroom. Her eyes were still red and swollen, and her burns stung a lot.

Tao came by and checked on her. “Are you all right?” He softly asked.

Danji didn’t meet his eyes and just nodded.

“Come. I’ll take you to Luhan’s room. You’ll be staying there.” Tao whispered. He put a careful hand on her and led her to the bedroom. It was empty, and she did not see Luhan. She couldn’t help but wonder where he was.

Kris entered the room. He saw that Holly’s clothes fit her perfectly. He tried not to dwell on the fact that it was his dead mate’s clothes. He had been keeping it safely locked up with the rest of Holly’s possessions, but he knew this was an emergency.

Kris cleared his throat and held up a red backpack, “Here. Luhan brought this when he came with you. I think it’s yours.”
