“So why are we waiting in here? And I want a real answer this time.” Tinnie’s voice went low as the ground. Her forehead creased at her best friend as she leaned to one side while crossing her hands. Her patients started to run out as she tapped away on the smooth stone floor.

“Be-be-because of some stuff I have to get ready for today.” Ae-Young nervously stuttered out. Her cheeks flared red at the thoughts provoked her in her mind.

“Which is?” the tapping started getting faster, Ae-Young knew her best friend gets angered easily, especially when she didn’t get what she wanted.

‘Maybe I can tell her now, so maybe we can accept it together. As I thought, I really can’t face it alone by myself.’ Ae-Young slowly talked herself into telling Tinnie, she cleared  and murmured, in the lowest and soundless voice she could muster up, “I’m getting ready for my dinner meeting tonight for my arranged marriage.”

“Huh?” Tinnie’s eyes went wide.

“I’m getting married.” she whispered again.

“Huh?” Tinnie couldn’t believe her ears. She never expected her best friend to get married so fast, their lives didn’t start yet and she’s already getting married. “Did you just say married?”

“Yep, my mom set it up, but she said I’d like him.”

“You just turned 17 and you’re already getting set up for a marriage meeting?”

Ae-Young nodded sadly.

“Ae-Young, but what about our dream where-”

Suddenly, Tinnie gets cut off and the door swings open, revealing Ae-Young’s mother, happily skipping her way to her daughter.

“Hey, Mrs. Bang,” Tinnie tried to say in her calmest voice.

“Hello, dear, did you hear the news yet? I’m so excited.” Mrs. Bang cheerfully said. She was like a beam of sunshine on a cloudy day.

“I told her, mom.” Ae-young said in a whispering voice while looking down. Tinnie pulled her chair next to Ae-Young and held her hand to comfort her. Ae-Young gave a thank you look back.

“Well, of course, you guys are best friends, even like sisters. And even if you didn’t, I would have since you’re like a daughter to me to Tinnie.” Ae-Young’s mother said as she picked up the brush on the dresser and styled Ae-Young’s hair the prettiest it can be.

Then while looking in the mirror at her daughter. She saw the thoughts that showed up on her daughter’s naive face. Sadness occupied her eyes. All Ae-Young could thing about was the dream she wished to take part in with Tinnie. The dream where she’d get to go on adventures, see what’s past those walls concealing everyone in the village.

“No.” Her mother’s voice struck like lightning through her wondering mind, “When are you going to forget those silly dreams?” her mother shook her head, “As much as you want to make your dreams come true, they are violating the 3 most important rules. Nev-“

“Never leave the village, never to do anything to unbalance the meaning of life, andabove all that the village is supposed to be isolated and hidden from everyone on the outside.” Tinnie and Ae-Young finished for Ae-Young’s mom.

Then that plastered sturdy look on Ae-Young’s mother’s face slowly melted into an ‘understanding mom’ look. She then pushed the two girls into her for a big bear hug, “Good, it’s really good to see you guys memorized it after I said it for the 100th time. You guys can’t keep dreaming about that, it’s dangerous if you ever make that dream true. And if you did climb that wall to the outside world, you won’t make it back alive. No one did… Besides that, you guys are finally growing up. Soon you’ll get married and start you own happy life.”

Tinnie started to giggle at what she said, thinking, ‘Happy? How can anyone be happy? She’s getting married, that won’t start Ae-young’s life, it’ll end it before it starts.’

Then Ae-Young’s mother raises an eyebrow, “I’m saying this to BOTH of you. Tinnie, I see you like my other daughter. So I’ll tell you.” Then she smiled and gave a ‘oh, your moms gonna kill me’ sigh, and continued, “Your mother told me she’s in the process of finding and setting up your marriage too. But don’t tell her you heard it from me.” She then winked at Tinnie.

Tinnie’s mouth flew open but nothing came out. Though her face froze from the shock, her eyes showed her expression. She was terrified.

“Well I’m done here. I’ll leave you guys alone to talk with each other a little longer. Oh and Ae-Young, don’t forget to wear the dress I bought you to dinner, and try your best to win his heart, not that you haven’t already, Oops, Man, I am not good at keeping secrets. Do you need me to walk you to the restaurant?” Ae-Young’s mother asked.

Tinnie quickly snapped out of her terror from marriage and quickly thought of a plan to help her and Ae-Young. She wasn’t going to let her best friend be married off, and she certainly isn’t going to wait until her mother tells her to go on her dinner meeting either. “Mrs. Bang, um… I’ll take Ae-Young there for you. You know, so she’s more comfortable.” Tinnie then took Ae-Young’s hand and smiled innocently, “And I’ll stay there with Ae-Young too.”

“Of course dear, I can always count on you.” her smile brightens with joy, “But if you’re going to stay there too, you need to dress up, and make-up and hair. Just give me 10 minutes.” Then Ae-Young’s mother pulls Tinnie to the chair at the dresser and quickly works her magic making the two girls as if they were princesses. By the time they left, they had on a prom-like puffy dress that was strapless and high pump heels, and make-up and hair that made them look like models. The mom looked at them as if this was the happiest day of her life, but she doesn’t know it’s the day that her daughter breaks her heart, the day that everything changes. So she smiles as tears of joy drop down her face as she waves them good-bye as they walk to the restaurant.

Near the restaurant, Ae-Young breaks the silence, “I never expected you to agree to this.”

“Who said I did? I care too much about you to let you go through this.”

“Than what are we going to do?”

“I’ll tell you when we get there.” Then Tinnie turned to the left and Ae-Young followed, getting farther and farther away from the restaurant, when they finally reach the wall cutting them off from the outside. “This is what we’re gonna do.”

“Stare at the wall?” Ae-Young said dumbfounded.

“No, silly, we’re gonna climb and cross it and make our dream come true, to see what lurks outside, look for adventure and do the impossible, we’ve been dreaming this for years now and we can finally do it. Then we can escape the horrors of marriage.”

“What? You can’t be serious, right Tinnie?” Ae-Young took a step back.

“I’m serious Ae-Young; it’s the only way to save us.”

“I guess so.”

“It is, now hurry up before the guards come and do there nightly shift.”

They both started to climb, and over the top they went. Their dress and heels didn’t help at all but they couldn’t leave them, they only had those to leave with. Flash lights, voices, and footsteps started to appear. The closer they came, the more the girls hurried, and hurried. Until they finally reached the other side and made a run for it before the guards realized that someone breached the fence and crossed it. The girls sprinted for their lives down the forest path that was covered and filled with trees.
