Chapter 27

'Betterer' Isn't a Word

"Taehyung!"

Jungkook ran out of his tent and hooked his arm around Taehyung's neck, pulling the older boy down suddenly.

"Whoa, what the - hey, Jungkookie. What's up?"

Jungkook grinned, his lips spreading apart and his teeth peeking through.

"Wanna go on a hike?"

Taehyung's eyes immediately went dark and he had a solemn look on his face, his hands gently wrapping around Jungkook's arm that was still slung on his neck. He moved it off of his shoulders, laying it to rest by Jungkook's side as he looked at him longingly.

"I'm sorry, Kook. I would love to go with you, but I already promised Hoseokie that we would go fishing for a bit. I'll definitely be free later, though, so I will gladly take you up on your offer to go hiking then!"

"Oh. Okay."

Jungkook nodded carefully, but as soon as Hoseok came out of their shared tent, he shot daggers right into the older man's eyes, and Hoseok simply shrugged in response.

"I thought you didn't like him anymore?"

"I don't, but that doesn't mean I can't still be friends with him, does it?"

Jungkook moved back and shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot.

"I mean, no, it doesn't."

Hoseok huffed proudly and clapped a large hand down on Jungkook's shoulder, almost knocking Jungkook off of his feet. He stuck his arms out in an attempt to balance himself, his eyes widening to the point where Jungkook was worried they'd pop right out.

"You're exactly right, Jungkookie my boy. But just because he isn't interested now doesn't mean he can't become interested later!"

Hoseok winked and ran off, leaving Jungkook to stare off to where they went in awe.

And also anger.

"I swear to god, Jung Hoseok!"

Jimin crawled out of his tent, having enjoyed his nap with Yoongi. Yoongi himself, of course, was still asleep, enjoying the peace and quiet of the serene wilderness and the change of scenery. The new scents and sounds were all quite relaxing, and Yoongi had passed out as quickly as he had crawled in, and Jimin saw no awakening in the near future.

He stretched his arms out and above his head, bending back as far as he could until he heard a satisfying 'pop'. Then, he smiled gently to himself and walked over to where Jungkook was sulking in front of the fireplace.

"Kook, what's up? Why do you look so down and emo?"

Jungkook glared at Jimin.

"I am not emo."

"Says all that eyeliner."

Jungkook pursed his lips and did some serious thinking and evaluation of his life in those short few seconds.

"Look, to be honest, the eyeliner was a last minute thing that I didn't really want to do, but my whole family said it looked good, and especially looked great on people with faces shaped like mine, so I gave it a go, and I actually quite like it-"

Jungkook was cut off by a single gesture, a hand raised in the air to silence any further communication.

"I didn't ask for an autobiography, Kook."

He pursed his lips again, annoyance flowing through his body.

"Well, whatever, okay? Leave me alone."

Jimin raised an eyebrow in amusement, watching as Jungkook waddled along across the campground, squatted the entire time. He managed to waddle all the way to the river where he washed off his eyeliner, and Jimin had to let out a low whistle at, admittedly, how hot Jungkook looked. The eyeliner was 100% unnecessary, and Jimin finally understood why Taehyung had the hots for this kid.

"Damn, Kook. You're looking good."

Jungkook flipped his hair to one side, standing straight up and adjusting his jacket. A smirk made its way onto his lips, the whites of his teeth peeking through.

"Looking good or just good looking?"

Jimin blanched, unsure of how to respond to that.

"Isn't it the same thing?"

It was Jungkook's turn to look blank as he tried to wrap his head around that sentence, his hands slowly making their way down his jacket. They stopped short once they reached the bottom, hanging there while Jungkook stared into space.

Jimin walked over to him, waving a hand in his face.

"Hello? Earth to Jungkook? Where did you just go?"

Jungkook blinked rapidly, staring at Jimin as though he were surprised that he was there. Then, he blushed, his entire face turning red.

". Hi, Jimin. You really don't want to know."

Jimin made a face of disgust, backtracking as fast as he could.

"Damn. If you're making that face, then I really don't want to know. What the is up with your head, kid? Who told you those things? Why have you become the way that you have? Where did my sweet, innocent little Jeon Jungkook from the sixth grade go? I like him a lot better than I like this emo, erted Jungkook. He's a lot better and, you know what? He's better looking. There. I said it."

Jungkook's eyebrows shot up into the air, disbelief painted on his face.

"Okay, I would believe that you like the other Jungkook better, but there is no way in hell that you think he's better looking. I mean, look at me. I am in my prime right now. Utter perfection. You will not find a single better version of me than the me now."

Jimin opened his mouth to reply, but a rustle in the bushes tore his attention away. Taehyung emerged through the bushes, leaves stuck in his hair. Hoseok came stumbling from behind, crying out as he came running in.

"TAEHYUNG, YOU BETTER MOVE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET-"

He ran chest first into Taehyung's back and knocked them both over and onto the ground with a scream.

"-hurt. Ow."

Hoseok groaned, rolling over off Taehyung who lied motionless, a single moan coming out from his throat. Jimin crouched down, watching over Taehyung like a mother did to her sick child.

"Tae, you good?"

"Yah! What about me? I just came falling down a hill!"

Jimin clicked his tongue and raised his arm, ready to throw a rock at Hoseok's face before he turned back to face Taehyung.

"Hey, kid, talk to me. Are you okay?"

Taehyung grunted.

"I'm not a kid."

Jimin just nodded his head, bringing his arm down and brushing the dust off of Taehyung's back gently. He watched Jungkook look at them from afar, and the boy's face seemed to have changed a bit darker, the corners of his lips dragging down.

"Come on, Tae. Let's sit up and check if you're okay."

Taehyung nodded against the ground, slowly pushing himself off the ground.

Hoseok watched them from where he was laying on his back, his head propped up on a rock. He had crawled away, preferring to watch rather than participate. He hadn't meant to crash into Taehyung in the first place, he'd simply lost his footing and came tumbling down the hill.

But maybe he was also hoping that a certain Jeon Jungkook would come to Taehyung's rescue, somehow sweeping him off his feet and carrying him into the sunset like the prince on a white horse that he certainly looked like.

Hoseok stopped and looked straight in front of him for a minute.

He had been watching way too many Disney movies lately.

He shook his head, surprised to find that Jungkook was now kneeling in front of Taehyung, Taehyung's hands in his own as he looked into his eyes. If Hoseok's eyes weren't lying to him, he could have sworn that the faintest of pinks was dusted on Taehyung's cheeks, and he almost cooed out loud. A quick look from Jimin, however, stopped him short.

He popped himself up, heading over to where Taehyung and Jungkook were sitting.

"You okay, Tae? Sorry about that..."

Taehyung shook his head, taking one of his hands out of Jungkook's hold to wave at Hoseok so he would know it was alright.

"No, it's okay, Hobi. I'm fine, honest. Jungkookie was just making sure my eyes were dilating or something. Or weren't dilating. One or the other. I don't really know. He knows a lot more about this than I do."

Jungkook pursed his lips.

"Tae, name all the people here and then tell me where we are and who we came with."

Taehyung tilted his head and furrowed his eyebrows.

"What? Okay, that's kind of random. Um, well, you're Jungkookie-"

"Full names."

Taehyung puffed out his cheeks, taking both his hands away and crossing his arms across his chest. He didn't understand what was happening, and he wasn't much appreciating being treated like a child.

"Okay, well then, you're Jeon Jungkook, that's Park Jimin, standing behind you is Jung Hoseok. We're camping in the middle of whatever forest this is because I didn't bother to learn the name of it, and we came here with Min Yoongi, Kim Namjoon and Kim Seokjin. Yoongi's probably sleeping somewhere and, last time I checked, Namjoon and Jinnie were off on a hike, but maybe they're fishing now like me and Hobi just were until he rudely knocked me over. We didn't even manage to catch anything, and all our stuff is still up there."

Hoseok was just about to say something, but Jungkook put up a hand to stop him before standing up.

"Okay, he seems fine. No concussion or anything."

Taehyung watched as Jungkook walked off, his face unnaturally screwed together.

"Jungkookie, are you okay?"

Jungkook's face whipped around and his eyes met directly with Taehyung's, a burning gaze boring a hole deep in Taehyung's eyes.

"Am I okay? Yeah, I'm fine. I'm great, actually."

Taehyung slowly tilted his head, looking at Jungkook with great curiosity. Suddenly, Jimin hit Hoseok in the stomach, grabbed onto his arm despite Hoseok's cry in pain and dragged him toward the path back to the campground.

"Hey, Hobi and I are going to start cooking for tonight. You guys should go get some firewood and grab the fishing gear."

Jungkook stopped in his tracks, turning to Jimin. He stalked over quickly, towering over Jimin and grabbed Hoseok's wrist. Hoseok simply shot his head down and stared at Jungkook's firm hold before his eyes flicked right back up to Jungkook's face, the boy's nostrils flaring.

"No. Hobi and I are sharing a tent tonight. We have some things to talk about. You and Tae can go find firewood. You need to keep checking on him, anyway. Make sure he doesn't suddenly pass out."

Without letting anyone say anything further, Jungkook pulled on Hoseok's arm, dragging him back to where the tents were.

Taehyung blinked.

"What just happened?"

Jimin and Taehyung returned after a while with piles of wood in their arms and sweat dripping down their foreheads. They had collected a decent amount of wood and placed it down by the fire.

Taehyung's eyes quickly found Jungkook, laughing along with Seokjin by the older's tent. They seemed to be talking about something really funny because Jungkook wouldn't stop smiling.

Taehyung huffed, the noise audible through his nose.

The sun had already set and there was food sitting by the fire, ready for them to eat, but Taehyung decided that he didn't have an appetite anymore. He turned to find Jimin sitting with Yoongi who was tending to the fire, a knot making its way in his stomach.

"Hey, Jimin? I'm going to turn in for tonight. I guess I'm not feeling great from earlier."

Jimin's face contorted into one of concern, making to stand up but stopping short when Taehyung shook his head.

"No, I'm okay. You don't need to worry. I'm just gonna head to sleep. Night, Chim. Night, Yoongi."

"Oh, okay. Good night, Tae. Call me if you need something, alright?"

Taehyung nodded, walking over to the empty tent and crawled inside, zipping it up after him. Jungkook just watched him go inside with a heavy heart, his mind spinning in circles from the decisions he couldn't make.

Seokjin elbowed him.

"Hey, tomorrow?"

Jungkook stared at Seokjin, biting down on his bottom lip. He ground his teeth against it, bringing it back and forth before he nodded hesitantly, once, twice, his eyes shifting to gaze at the dirt ground.

"Yeah. Tomorrow."

Taehyung woke up earlier than usual, not used to the hard surface of the ground. He lifted his arms up and over his head, cracking his back as he slipped out of his sleeping bag. He shivered, though it was summer, and quickly put on a shirt. Then, he slipped out of his tent, careful not to wake anyone else up.

To his surprise, Jungkook was sitting at the fireplace, blankly looking at the burnt-out coals.

"Jungkook?"

Eyes wide open, Jungkook turned to face Taehyung, looking like he had been caught in the middle of a murder.

"Taehyung. Hey. Hi. You're awake really early. Hi."

Taehyung's lips curled upwards and he let out a laugh, looking at Jungkook as though he meant the entire world to him. And honestly, if he thought about it, he kind of did.

"Wow. You're being so awkward."

Jungkook opened his mouth to counter, but Taehyung beat him to it.

"I really missed it. Missed you, actually. I know it's been less than a day, but... I don't know. It felt like something was wrong. That something was missing. I thought you might have been avoiding me?"

Jungkook blinked.

, had he been that obvious?

He shook his head, standing up and patting the dirt off his .

"No, I wasn't avoiding you. Not at all. Um. Want to go down to the bathrooms? To brush our teeth? Oh, yeah, I just woke up too. Ha. Um. Yeah. And then we could go find some more branches to burn. We used a lot of them yesterday after you went to sleep."

Taehyung almost laughed at how broken Jungkook's sentences were, nodding gently.

"Okay, Kook. Let's go do that."

Taehyung started walking and Jungkook ran forward to keep up, a body's length away from Taehyung, a step behind in his tracks. They brushed their teeth in silence, the sounds of insects buzzing around them and the water from the river flowing gently. Heading back from the bathroom, they trudged into the forest, the quiet slowly starting to make Taehyung uncomfortable.

He and Jungkook had never talked so little before.

Picking up a stick, Taehyung watched as Jungkook was bent down, his hands wrapped around some stones.

"Kook, hey, Kook!"

There was no response, Taehyung placing down what branches he had picked up, walking a few steps closer to where Jungkook was, but keeping his distance in case the boy did something unexpected.

"Hey, Jungkook, are you sure you're okay? You're my best friend, so you can tell me anything. You know that, right?"

Taehyung just watched as the younger slowly nodded his head, hands still busy playing with the numerous rocks placed near his feet. The older man pouted, wanting Jungkook to at least acknowledge him, so he moved closer to the younger, waiting for an answer. Jungkook, on the other hand, was very aware of the male slowly inching his way closer and closer to him. He felt bad not answering Taehyung, but when the Taehyung himself was the problem, what was there to discuss? He just ended up mumbling to himself.

"You know, I actually really like you Tae, but if you ever found that out, I'd have to kill both you and myself, so I guess it's good that you don't know, don't you think?"

It was eerily silent afterward, and Jungkook wasn't sure if Taehyung had heard him. He briefly looked up at Taehyung's hair, barely registering the new chestnut coloured locks that adorned his head.

How had he not noticed before?

Jungkook's heart was pounding in his ears and he just heard Taehyung come even closer than he already was, his breath fanning down his neck. Jungkook's breath caught in his throat when the older male placed his lips right next to his ear, quietly whispering. It sent his heart racing even faster than it already was, and he swallowed a lump that formed in his throat, anxious to hear the next words come out of the older's mouth.

"What was that?"

Jungkook's world shattered in an instant and was roughly but quickly glued back together. He was suddenly filled with rage and anger, but he was also relieved that the older didn't hear what he said. Taehyung's face appeared in front of him and you could almost see the question marks floating in the air. He opened his mouth to repeat the question,

"Sorry Kookie, I didn't quite-"

When Jungkook threw a rock in his face.

At first, he fell down, taken aback by the sudden boulder that was launched at his visage. He watched while the younger male ran away from him and into the forest when he actually realized what had happened; when the events that had just taken place finally made sense in his mind.

And he was pissed.

Royally pissed.

"WHAT THE , JUNG? WHY DID YOU JUST, WHAT? THAT ING HURT, YOU LITTLE PRICK! YOU THREW A ROCK IN MY FACE, WHAT THE HELL? GET BACK HERE YOU ! I'M GOING TO TEAR YOU APART, LIMB FROM LIMB!"

Jungkook just laughed as he stood hidden behind a tree, watching a very angry Taehyung holding his face while stumbling through the forest, trying to figure out where he was hiding. He passed many trees, sticking his head into random bushes to try to find the young boy, and Jungkook couldn't help but marvel at just how bad he was at this. He must've been terrible at 'Hide and Seek' as a kid.

He threw a rock out, the sound making Taehyung's head whip around. He didn't care if Taehyung knew where he was now, but based on how Taehyung now moved in the opposite direction, Jungkook guessed that his second rock throw didn't garner as much attention as the first one did.

Smirking to himself, Jungkook decided to be bold, peeking his head from out of the tree and running across the forest, successfully hiding in a bush that Taehyung was slowly advancing towards.

"Jungkookie! Where are you?"

Jungkook had to cover his mouth to prevent himself from laughing, watching as Taehyung silently cursed him out. His lips then parted, a wicked grin coming onto Jungkook's face as he brought his legs close together, ready to jump up and surprise Taehyung.

He counted to five until Taehyung was right beside him, jumping up and scaring the living hell out of Taehyung's body.

"WHOA!"

The scream shocked Jungkook who took a step back, but Taehyung lost his balance, going down and grabbing Jungkook with him. He landed flat against the ground, Jungkook's body landing right on top of his.

"Ow, ."

But Jungkook wasn't focusing on the pain.

Instead, he was busy staring down at Taehyung's face, inches away from his own, willing himself to stop breathing so hard and praying that he could stop staring at Taehyung's lips.

"Ow, Jungkook, what the hell? And why'd you throw that rock at me earlier, that really hurt, you know-"

Taehyung stopped short, opening his eyes to find Jungkook staring down at him. His mouth was open just the slightest, and Taehyung couldn't help but his lips subconsciously.

Jungkook felt himself lose control right there, so he gently moved his knees to either side of Taehyung's body, wanting to lean back but too busy enraptured by Taehyung's face.

His eyes lingered too long on Taehyung's lips, and Taehyung could feel Jungkook's breath against his own. He stuttered in his own movements, arms twitching back.

"Ah, sorry, Tae-"

Taehyung shot up, lips crashing against lips, arms wrapping around Jungkook's neck. Jungkook's eyes flew open and he went down from the sudden extra weight, but he blinked and lifted himself up, smiling into the kiss.

He pulled them into a sitting position, wrapping his arms around Taehyung's waist.

It wasn't until they were both out of breath that they pulled away, but Taehyung kept his arms around Jungkook's neck, his forehead against the other's, smiles on both of their faces.

"Hey, Taehyung?"

Jungkook panted out, his heart racing a mile a minute.

"Yeah?"

They were both silent for a minute, but Jungkook gently kissed Taehyung on the corner of his mouth.

"I really like you."

Taehyung felt his heart stop.

"Yeah. Me too. Yeah. I like you too."

Chapter 36: Aww, this story was just beautiful! Now, this comment's gonna be huge but just bear with me.

Firstly, I'm NOT a silent reader, please don't think I am. In fact, I actually comment a lot (one in each chapter) but this story had me hooked. I couldn't stop reading it, I didn't even think about scrolling to the comments to leave a message. I scrolled down and hit the 'Next Chapter' as soon as I saw it, and started off with the new chapter. I was reading a whole lot of angst and drama fan-fictions, and I needed a story that's just pure comedy and fluff, something cute and light to make me smile. Thankfully, I found this wonderful story. Unfortunately, I found this story on the last day of my Spring break. So, school came in between (it's been 2 days of school actually) and that just made me very determined on finishing the story than commenting on it. So, I decided to leave this comment at the last chapter.

Now, back to the story. I see you're a ChanBaek/BaekYeol shipper and that's probably what you mostly write. To see that you took your time to write a TaeKook/VKook story itself made me gain respect for you. This story was just an amazing roller-coaster, it gave me mixed feelings and some moments made me squeal while others had me cracking up. There were also times when I felt sad because Taehyung and Jungkook were deeply in love with each other, but they were too dense to realise it or make a move. Reading about Yoongi's family also made me sad. All turned out to be good and well in the end though. This story is just perfect; it has the right amount of fluff, comedy, romance and a little bit of angst. It was overwhelming with pure creativity, to be honest, and I absolutely loved it.

You see, I'm a writer myself. Sometimes, we need a break too. I decided to look for a fun story to read, and I didn't think I'd find the right story at once. Surprisingly, I did! It's your splendid story! I'm so glad I found this, it was truly an excellent ride for me. I didn't get bored out of it, nor did I want to give up reading it. I'll look forward to more stories from you, I'll read them when I'm free. Good luck <3
