Chapter 18

Time Machine: What could've been...

Present Day

“We’re going to Yue Fei’s tomb memorial?” Qian Xi asks Lay and Yue while the 3 were waiting for the subway train.

“Yup” Lay replies. “You’ll learn a lot of history there. Yue Fei was a heroic military general who was kicked some serious back in the day. He kicked the out of everyone who tried to take over China and never once lost a battle. But sadly, he was wrongfully killed by the emperor’s assistants who convinced the emperor, Yue Fei was going to overthrow him. Today, he’s considered a symbol of honor and loyalty.”

“Ohhh, wow.” Qian Xi responds. Then he realizes. “He has the same name as you?” He looks up a Yue curiously.

“Haha, no silly” Yue responds. “His Yue is the character for mountain, and mine is for moon. But it’s pronounced the same. Haha, but Fei just happens to be my roommate’s name.” Yue laughs at the coincidence.

When they walk up from the underground subway, they notice that the sky is cloudy and a light drizzle has started to sprinkle.

Lay sighs. “Too bad the day I spend with you just happens to be a gloomy one,” He says to Yue.

“Haha, I wouldn’t put it that way.” Yue replies. “I just happen to love rain. It’s my favorite weather.”

Lay’s face brightens.

While the 3 of them were walking over to the tomb, the rain gets heavier.

“Let’s wait this one out for a bit,” Lay recommends pointing underneath pavilion.

“Good idea” Yue replies. Lay grabs her hand while she grabs Qian Xi’s hand and the 3 run over to take shelter right before the downpour.

Yue sighs and breathes in the fresh scent of rain while listening to the raindrops hit the roof of the pavilion.

“You’re enjoying this aren’t you?” Lay says smiling at how happy Yue is. She nods happily.

An old man with a camera walks over to them.

“Hey, would you guys like a family photo?” The man says holding up his camera. “I’ll give you the best price you’ll find in a tourist area like this.” He offers.

“Sorry, we would but we’re not-“ Lay begins before the man interrupts him.

“Only 10 yuan!” The man says while nudging Lay closer to Yue and Qian Xi.

“Sure, we’ll take it” Yue butts in. “I don’t think he’ll leave us alone otherwise” She whispers to Lay.

After the man takes their photo and Lay hands him the money, the rain finally stops.

“Looks like we’re in luck” Lay says. “The tomb shouldn’t be far from here.”

The three walk down the sidewalk until they reach a temple gate that reads: Tomb of the Great General Yue Fei.

“Well, we’re here.” Lay says. “Let’s hope it doesn’t pour too much from now on.”

“Isn’t it inside?” Qian Xi asks.

“Part of it is, but most of it is just an open temple connected by gardens and trails.” Lay replies.

They walk through the temple with separate pavilions each connected by a trail. Each pavilion had a different stage of Yue Fei’s life, starting from when he was young all the way to how he died. The stories were written on scrolls hanging on the walls in ancient Chinese, and portrayed by miniature statues that told a story.

When they finally made it to the other side of the temple, it was finally time to see the actual tomb.

The tomb was just a mound of Earth. The tour guide began to explain how Yue Fei’s remains are not actually buried in the mound because they were never found after the emperor’s assistant poisoned him. Qian Xi noticed a smaller mound right next to the larger one and was curious to know what it was.

“Oh, that one is for his son.” Lay explained. “They couldn’t find his son’s remains either, so there are only a set of his son’s clothes buried in that smaller mound.”

“Ah” Qian Xi nods. “When I die, I want to be buried next to you like that” Qian Xi suddenly says, taking Lay by surprise.

“You’re too young to be thinking about things like that” Lay smiles and ruffles Qian Xi’s hair. “Heck, even I’m too young for that! But I’m glad we can be close buds.” Lay picks Qian Xi up and holds him. Ugh, the kid’s too cute. Lay thinks to himself while he and Qian Xi smiles back at each other.

“Aww, look at you two” Yue giggles noticing how Qian Xi and Lay were bonding. “So where are we headed next?” She asks.

“Let’s go up to the top of the mountain up to the 6 Harmonies Pagoda, the view must be spectacular” Lay suggests.

“That’s sounds great “ Yue replies.

They take a bus up to the mountaintop. The road was muddy and a little bumpy, but with Qian Xi sitting in Yue’s lap and Lay holding her by the waist, Yue felt comfortable and secure.

When they climbed up the spiraling staircase they looked at the paintings and wall decorations along the way. The architectural style was typical of what you would normally see during the Song Dynasty. The view at the top was incredible. Because of the rain, the misty mountains were shrouded amidst the clouds and West Lake was rippling with the occasional drops of water.

“I can see why you love rain from up here,” Lay says staring at the scenic view.

“Finally, someone who understands” Yue laughs. “It’s the sound, the smell, and the atmosphere. And this place just embodies everything I love about rain.”

“Now whenever it rains, I’ll think of you, and of this day,” Lay says, now facing Yue and smiling.

Later that evening, Lay, Yue, and Qian Xi head to a restaurant in downtown Hangzhou. They were sitting inside drinking hot soup, while the rain started to pour once again.

“So, what is your ideal type?” Lay suddenly asks, talking a sip of his soup.

“Haha, you really want to know?” Yue laughs. “Some who dances well, sings well, respectful, caring, and kind.”

“So you’re going to give me the typical answer, huh?” Lay raises an eyebrow. “The kind where I can fit it, but so can a lot of guys out there.”

“Yup!” Yue smiles playfully. “Well that’s what I’ve gotten from you too.” Yue challenges. “In interviews you always say: someone who truly loves me, cares about me and understands me.”

“That’s an interview though,” Lay says. “If you were to ask me now, I would say a girl who is passionate about what she loves, has simple yet meaning full tastes in style and life, experience and understanding on a deeper level with me, and will always be by me side.”

“Wow, I’m impressed” Yue says with a grin. “No mention of physical appearance. Or did you do that on purpose?” She jokes. Lay opens his mouth to respond, but Yue interrupts. “I’m just kidding. To be honest, I really don’t know my own ideal type that well. I think it really depends on if I love him enough that all of his traits become that of my ideal type.”

Lay nods. “You have a good point there.”

“I’ve been asked that question too,” Qian Xi suddenly says.

“Really?” Yue says surprised. “What pedofan would-”

“Haha, it’s the entertainment industry, what can you expect? It happened to me when I was that age too” Lay interrupts with a laugh.

“So what did you say?” Yue asks raising an eyebrow.

“I said a girl who is demure and quiet” Qian Xi replies.

“Now you’re sounding like Luhan, wait till LayHan shippers hear this in the future” Lay says jokingly.

They all laugh. After dinner, they take the subway back to the hotel. Lay see’s Luhan and Tao watching TV slouched on the couch together when he walks into the room.

“So how was your day?” Luhan asks with his eye still glued to the TV.

“It was nice. Very enjoyable.” Lay answers while plopping down on the couch next to Luhan and Tao.

“Where did you guys go?” Lay asked Luhan and Tao.

“I took Yuan Yuan to the Zoo” Luhan said. “He wanted to see pandas…even though we’ve already got one right here” Luhan jokes hinting at Tao.

“Hey!” Tao finally snaps out of watching TV. “Panda is better than deer. I’m China’s national treasure.” He smirks.

“So where did you take Xiao Kai?” Lay asks.

“We went to West Lake and I taught him some martial arts moves by the park” Tao replies. “I swear, if we were on Hello Baby in Korea, I would win best father.”

“Who are you kidding” Luhan says. “You didn’t even like TFboys when you first met them, and even now, you only have good feelings towards Xiao Kai.”

“Uh, whatever” Tao rolls his eyes. “I’m going to wash up and prepare for my date tomorrow.”

“Where are you planning on taking her?” Luhan asks.

“Shopping” Tao replies with a smirk.
